Prepare a classic car in a deliberate sequence: decide what the photographs must show, remove unrelated items, clean the exterior, interior, glass and wheels, choose an uncluttered setting, work in soft light, and follow a written shot list. For a sale, the same process must document the car’s real condition rather than conceal it.
A professional detail is optional for many straightforward outdoor shoots. The essential standard is a clean, dry, honestly presented car. Paint correction is a separate, condition-dependent decision—especially when the finish is original, delicate or recently restored.

Start by deciding what the photographs need to communicate
Preparation is easier when every action serves the purpose of the shoot. A private owner may want attractive memories of a vehicle; a seller needs photographs that let a remote buyer understand what is being offered. Those goals overlap, but a sale set requires more complete coverage and more restraint about cosmetic changes.

Plan to show the vehicle as it actually exists. Remove loose personal items that are not part of the car, but do not hide wear, repairs, corrosion, mismatched finishes or other material condition. Include broad views that establish the whole vehicle and close views that help a buyer inspect it without being present. A clean presentation improves legibility; it should not become a reason to omit evidence.

For a personal or editorial shoot
You can place greater emphasis on mood, scenery and a small set of hero angles. Even then, cleaning the glass and removing distracting objects makes the car easier to read. Decide in advance whether the images should emphasize the design, the restoration work, the driving environment or details such as badges and trim. That decision determines which areas deserve extra preparation time.
Write a condition note before touching the car
Walk around the vehicle in ordinary light and note existing marks, oxidation, fine scratches, chips, dents and anything loose. This record helps you distinguish a pre-existing feature from dirt introduced during preparation. It also keeps a sale shoot honest when you review the final files.
“The car doesn’t have to be professionally detailed, but it should be as clean as possible.”

Choose the right level of preparation
There are two practical levels: a basic photo-ready clean and professional detailing or paint correction. Select between them using the car’s condition, the sensitivity or originality of its finish, the purpose of the shoot and how much intervention you are willing to accept.
| Preparation level | What it includes | When it fits | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basic photo-ready clean | Exterior wash and dry; interior cleaning and vacuuming; interior and exterior glass cleaning; wheel cleaning; removal of unrelated loose items. | Most straightforward outdoor shoots, including many sale listings where the paint is presentable. | It improves cleanliness without attempting to change the finish’s underlying condition. |
| Professional detailing | More intensive cleaning performed by a qualified detailer, with the scope agreed before work begins. | Heavily soiled cars, complex interiors or owners who do not have the time or tools to clean safely. | It is not required for every photo set; confirm that the provider understands classic finishes. |
| Paint correction | Condition-dependent treatment for oxidation or fine scratches, undertaken only after assessing the paint. | A finish whose defects materially interfere with the intended photographs and can safely tolerate the work. | There is no universal procedure for fragile, original or recently restored finishes. Consult a qualified specialist when uncertain. |
The available classic-car guidance treats oxidation and fine scratches as reasons to consider correction, not as a mandate. Aggressive polishing can be an inappropriate choice for a thin or historically important finish, so do not schedule it automatically just because a camera will be used.
Gather supplies and set a clean workflow
Prepare the work area before washing so you do not carry grit from one task into another. At minimum, have suitable car-wash supplies, a way to dry the exterior, an interior vacuum, glass cleaner and clean detailing towels. Keep towels used on dirty bodywork away from glass and interior surfaces.
Use separate towels for glass
The classic-car preparation guidance specifically recommends one clean towel for applying glass cleaner and another for buffing it off. This two-towel method gives you a fresh surface for the final wipe and reduces the chance of transferring residue. Inspect both towels before use; a towel that has picked up grit can create new marks or streaks.

Plan the order of work
- Remove loose objects from the cabin, trunk and visible storage areas.
- Wash the exterior and dry it completely.
- Clean the wheels.
- Clean and vacuum the interior, including visible floor and seat areas.
- Clean the glass on both sides with separate application and buffing towels.
- Inspect the paint in the light you expect to use for the shoot.
- Decide whether any optional professional treatment is still justified.
This order leaves the final inspection for the location, where you can catch dust or streaks revealed by the actual light. If you hire a detailer, explain that the vehicle is a classic and identify any original, delicate or recently restored areas before work starts.
Clean the exterior without changing its story
Wash and dry the body
Wash the exterior so dust, road film and visible grime do not dominate the photographs. Dry it fully before moving to the location; water spots can become obvious when the body is viewed at an angle or lit from the side. Look at horizontal panels, the edges of doors and the area around trim, where residue is easy to miss from standing height.
Inspect oxidation and fine scratches
After washing, reassess the paint rather than deciding on correction while the car is dirty. Oxidation may appear as a dull or chalky surface; fine scratches may become visible in reflected light. If these issues are central to the shoot, ask a qualified classic-car specialist whether correction is appropriate. The guidance does not establish a technical protocol for fragile finishes, so an owner should not treat a generic polishing routine as automatically safe.
Clean the wheels
Wheels are visible in three-quarter and side views, and dirt there can make an otherwise clean car look unfinished. Clean them as part of the exterior sequence, then check the wheel faces and surrounding areas again after the car is parked at the shoot location. Do not allow dirty tools used on wheels to touch painted panels or glass.
Clean the cabin, glass and visible details
Clear personal items
Remove clothing, paperwork, bottles, tools and other loose objects that are not part of the vehicle. For a sale, leaving unrelated belongings in the cabin can make the car look less cared for and can confuse a buyer about what is included. Keep original equipment and documented accessories in place when they are part of the car; the goal is to remove clutter, not to strip out authentic features.
Clean and vacuum the interior
Clean the dashboard, seats, door panels and other visible surfaces, then vacuum the floor and upholstery. Pay attention to the areas the camera will see through open doors and windows. Avoid adding decorative objects that were not present with the car; they can distract from the condition and make different views inconsistent.
Clean glass inside and out
Clean windscreen, side glass, rear glass and mirrors on both sides. Interior film and exterior dust catch reflections, especially when the light is low or comes from behind the car. Apply glass cleaner with one clean towel and buff it off with another. Check the result from the driver’s seat and from outside at the planned camera angles; a pane that looks clear head-on can still show streaks obliquely.

Before leaving for the shoot, inspect headlights, tail lamps, emblems, brightwork and other high-contrast details for fingerprints or dust. These parts frequently appear in close views and are quick to overlook during a general wash. If a mark is part of the car’s condition rather than removable dirt, leave it visible and record it accurately in a sale set.

Select a location that does not compete with the car
Choose an open or scenic setting with a simple background. Avoid parked vehicles, crowds, signs, bins and other visual clutter behind the car. A location that looks attractive from the driver’s position may place a distracting object directly behind the roofline or through the windows, so walk the intended angles before unloading equipment.
Balance convenience and visual control
| Setup | Advantages | What to watch |
|---|---|---|
| Open shade | Soft, even illumination with manageable reflections. | Check that nearby surfaces do not cast colored or uneven light onto the paint. |
| Overcast conditions | Broad, naturally softened light that can reduce harsh shadows. | Cloud cover can change; recheck exposure and reflections between angles. |
| Late-afternoon sunlight | Lower-angle light can give the body shape and a warmer appearance. | Watch for long shadows, bright sky reflections and changing light as the session progresses. |
| Midday sun | Often the most convenient time to schedule. | Use solid shade and reposition the car to control hard shadows; direct sun can make glass and paint reflections difficult. |
If you must work in midday sun, find solid shade rather than relying on a small patch that leaves part of the vehicle exposed. Move the car as needed so the body is illuminated consistently. When it gives the most even result, face the front toward the main light source.
Position the car and control the background
Park on a surface that allows the vehicle to sit level and leaves enough room for front, rear and side views. Look through the camera or phone from each planned position before beginning the final walk-around. Remove or move anything that appears behind the car, including another vehicle that was outside your initial field of view.

Use a repeatable orientation
Choose one primary orientation for the hero views, then keep track of any repositioning. Consistent orientation makes the set easier to understand and prevents the sun or background from changing unpredictably between related images. If the location offers a cleaner background in one direction, prioritize that over a more dramatic but cluttered angle.
Protect the prepared finish
Once the car is clean, minimize unnecessary driving and door opening before the photographs. If dust appears while you wait, remove it with a clean method appropriate to the finish rather than rubbing with whatever cloth is available. Keep the car away from active traffic, sprinklers and overhanging trees that can add new contamination.
Build a complete shot list before pressing the shutter
A written list prevents a beautiful three-quarter view from becoming the only usable image. The guidance supports broad exterior views, interior and engine views, plus close details. For a sale, add condition-focused images rather than relying on flattering angles alone.
| Group | Views to plan | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Exterior overview | Front three-quarter, rear three-quarter and side views. | Establish the car’s overall shape, stance, paint and major panels. |
| Front and rear | Straight-on front and rear views when the setting permits. | Show lamps, grille, bumpers, badges and alignment without perspective hiding them. |
| Interior | Dashboard, front seats, rear seating area where present, controls and visible floors. | Show materials, layout, cleanliness and wear. |
| Engine area | Engine-bay overview and useful component details. | Give a remote viewer a clear view of the compartment’s condition and equipment. |
| Close details | Trim, wheels, emblems, upholstery, paint texture and any notable features. | Document craftsmanship and condition; include flaws that matter to a buyer. |
Sequence the session
- Make the cleanest exterior overview images while the car and background are untouched.
- Capture the remaining exterior angles, keeping the car’s orientation and light in mind.
- Open the doors and photograph the interior before people or equipment create new marks.
- Photograph the engine area after confirming that the hood position and surroundings are safe and uncluttered.
- Finish with close details and condition evidence.
- Repeat any view where glass streaks, dust or a distracting background became visible on review.
No universal image count, camera body, lens or measured sales benefit is established by the available guidance. Use enough views to answer the viewer’s practical questions, not a supposedly ideal number.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsDocument condition honestly in sale photographs
Attractive presentation and accurate disclosure are compatible. Clean the car so its features are easy to see, then photograph areas that a remote buyer would reasonably want to inspect. If a scratch, oxidation, dent, repair, corrosion spot or mismatch is part of the vehicle’s condition, include a clear close view and retain a broader image that shows where it is located.

Do not let light hide defects accidentally
Soft light is useful because it reduces harsh shadows, but changing the angle can also make a defect disappear. Compare the car from several directions and add a straightforward detail view when a condition issue is important. Avoid placing the vehicle so a deep shadow covers an entire panel that a buyer needs to evaluate.
Keep the set internally consistent
Use the same clean state throughout the session. If you move a loose item, open a door or reposition the car, check that later images do not imply a different configuration. Consistency helps viewers understand which equipment belongs to the car and which objects were merely present during photography.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Perform a final walk-around at the location
Before starting and again before packing up, walk around the car slowly. The final check should cover the areas most likely to spoil an otherwise usable frame.
- Glass is clear inside and out, with no visible streaks.
- Headlights, tail lamps, mirrors, badges and bright trim are free of fingerprints and loose dust.
- Painted panels do not show fresh dirt, water spots or towel residue.
- Wheels and tire-facing areas are as clean as the rest of the exterior.
- The cabin contains only items that belong with the vehicle.
- Doors, hood and trunk are positioned intentionally for the planned view.
- No person, vehicle, sign or other distraction sits behind the car.
- The light has not shifted enough to create a harsh shadow or a new reflection problem.
- Condition details required for a sale are on the shot list and have been captured.
Review a few frames at full size before leaving. A small streak or piece of lint that is invisible on a camera screen may be obvious when the image is uploaded. If a required view is missing, take it while the car is still positioned and clean rather than trying to recreate the setup later.
Common preparation mistakes and the practical fix
Over-detailing an original finish
Problem: Treating paint correction as a routine step can remove material or alter the character of an original or recently restored finish.
Fix: Limit the basic preparation to cleaning unless oxidation or fine scratches genuinely interfere with the photographs. Ask a qualified classic-car specialist to assess uncertain or fragile paint.
Cleaning only the outside
Problem: A polished exterior paired with dusty glass, a cluttered cabin or dirty wheels makes the set look inconsistent.

Problem: Residue or grit transfers from bodywork to glass and creates streaks or marks.
Fix: Keep towels clean and use separate towels for applying glass cleaner and buffing it off.
