A Bonneville run begins with the rulebook, not the throttle. First choose the sanctioned event, vehicle configuration, engine and fuel, intended class, and target speed. Those choices determine which SCTA-BNI rules, inspection requirements, driver paperwork, and event stipulations apply. Build and document the car to that exact combination, register it, complete the required driver forms and orientation, and confirm that the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and event organizer allow vehicle access on your dates.

This is a guide to sanctioned Bonneville land-speed racing. It is not a recipe for making an ordinary street car safe at a speed selected on a public road or an unrestricted salt surface. A car that is acceptable in one SCTA-BNI class or speed range may be illegal or unsafe in another, so do not substitute rules from a different racing series or rely on generic internet specifications.

Start by defining the exact entry

Before ordering parts or welding the first tube, write down the entry you intend to make. SCTA-BNI applies requirements by event, class, fuel, vehicle design, and target speed. Without those inputs, there is no defensible answer to questions such as which roll-cage design, tires, restraints, fire equipment, or parachute arrangement you need.

Decision What to record Why it changes preparation
Event The specific sanctioned Bonneville meet and year Event stipulations, schedules, forms, and access instructions can change.
Vehicle configuration Body style, wheelbase or chassis format, enclosed or open cockpit, and major alterations Class definitions and inspection points depend on the vehicle design.
Engine and fuel Engine type, induction, displacement as classified, and intended fuel Fuel-system, engine, and class provisions are not interchangeable.
Class The SCTA-BNI class you will enter, including any body or engine designation The class rule section is the controlling specification for the build.
Target speed The speed you intend to pursue in the event Speed bands can affect structural, restraint, braking, and stopping provisions.

Keep this entry definition with the car’s build records. If the configuration changes—for example, a different fuel, body treatment, engine, or target—recheck the class and every affected rule section instead of assuming the original approval still applies.

Obtain the documents that control the build

Use SCTA-BNI’s current official Bonneville materials as the authority. The organization publishes the Rules & Records Book, event stipulations, vehicle-inspection information, and rookie-orientation material. The 2026 materials include Bonneville stipulations and a rookie booklet, but the applicable edition and event notice control your entry; a document from a previous meet may no longer be current.

  1. Download the current Rules & Records Book. Locate the sections for your vehicle, body, engine, fuel, class, and target-speed category.
  2. Read the event stipulations separately. These notices can add operational requirements, deadlines, pit rules, or access instructions that are not obvious from the general rulebook.
  3. Collect inspection and driver forms. Save the vehicle-registration procedure, safety-inspection information, driver medical form, and rookie-orientation instructions with your build file.
  4. Check revision dates and applicability. Confirm that each document applies to your event and configuration before fabricating safety equipment or buying parts.
  5. Ask SCTA-BNI technical officials about ambiguities. If a drawing, interpretation, or proposed modification is unclear, resolve it with the sanctioning body or its inspectors before construction. Written clarification is easier to verify at inspection than a last-minute interpretation in the pit.

Do not borrow a cage dimension, tire rating, restraint rule, fire-system specification, or parachute requirement from SCCA, drag racing, circuit racing, or another land-speed series. The available official material establishes that these items are class- and configuration-specific; it does not support one universal Bonneville specification.

Turn the applicable rules into a build plan

Once the class and documents are fixed, make a line-by-line compliance list. Each item should identify the rule section, the part or modification that satisfies it, the evidence you will show an inspector, and the person responsible for checking it. Treat the following systems as inspection subjects, not as a generic parts list.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Chassis, body, and cockpit

Determine what the rulebook requires for the chassis structure, roll protection, body openings, cockpit clearance, steering, and driver access for your exact configuration. Record tube materials, attachment points, weld inspections, and any required drawings or photographs. A design that is structurally sound in another class can still fail because it does not match the dimensions, placement, or accessibility required for this entry.

Restraints, seat, and driver protection

Use the rule sections for the seat, harness or other restraint system, head and neck protection, helmet, arm restraints where applicable, and cockpit padding. Confirm dates, labels, installation angles, and mounting structure from the current book rather than assuming a component’s motorsport marketing description is sufficient. Keep certificates, model numbers, and installation photographs in the inspection file.

Tires, wheels, and hubs

Verify the approved tire type, speed capability, construction, wheel condition, bead retention, and hub or axle requirements for the class and target speed. The official excerpts do not establish a universal tire rating or pressure, so do not publish or follow a generic threshold. Have the intended combination reviewed before the car is transported to the salt.

Engine, fuel, and electrical systems

Map the fuel tank, lines, shutoffs, pumps, battery location, wiring protection, engine ventilation, and fluid containment to the applicable rules. Identify every connection that could leak or disconnect under vibration. Label shutoffs so the driver and safety crew can find them quickly, and document how the system is isolated for inspection and emergency response.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Brakes, steering, and stopping equipment

Use the class rules to define the required service brakes, pedal arrangement, steering components, controls, and any supplemental stopping devices. Do not infer a parachute requirement, deployment speed, pack location, or cable routing from another car. Those details must be confirmed for the exact vehicle and target speed by SCTA-BNI technical guidance.

Fire protection and emergency equipment

Check the current rulebook for required fire systems, extinguishers, plumbing, activation controls, shielding, and labeling. A motorsport extinguisher may be sensible pit equipment, but its type, capacity, certification, and whether it is required cannot be stated universally from the available official material. Buy only equipment that matches the rule section and can be inspected in its installed position.

Complete entry and driver requirements

SCTA-BNI’s published process requires the entrant to register the vehicle and have it pass vehicle safety inspection. The driver must complete the event medical form, and a new driver must complete rookie orientation before driving on a race course. Treat these as separate tasks with separate evidence.

  1. Register the vehicle. Follow the current event page instructions, deadlines, class information, and payment or identification requirements. Keep the confirmation with the vehicle file.
  2. Submit the medical form. Use the current form and instructions for the event. Do not assume a form from an earlier year or another sanctioning body is accepted.
  3. Complete rookie orientation if required. Read the current rookie booklet and attend the organizer’s orientation before attempting a course run. Confirm where and when the briefing occurs.
  4. Prepare the inspection packet. Bring registration information, class and fuel declaration, component records, drawings or photographs requested by the inspectors, and any written clarifications you received.
  5. Present the car as it will run. Inspectors need to see the installed safety systems, controls, labels, and access. A part still in a shipping box or a temporary substitute does not demonstrate compliance.
  6. Resolve discrepancies before a run. If an inspector identifies a problem, ask what rule section applies, correct the item, and request a reinspection. Do not make an unapproved workaround and hope it passes at the starting line.

Plan access to the salt and the event site

The BLM manages the Bonneville Salt Flats and controls vehicle use under land-management and resource-protection rules. Moist spring salt or standing water can trigger seasonal restrictions, and permitted events can limit general access beyond designated areas. A historical race date is not proof that the surface will be open when you arrive.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check current BLM notices and the organizer’s instructions shortly before departure. Confirm the event dates, arrival window, permitted routes, parking and pit boundaries, weather or surface advisories, and any closure language. If conditions change, follow the current notice rather than driving onto a closed or visibly wet surface.

The BLM describes the Salt Flats as about 12 miles long and 5 miles wide, a roughly 30,000-acre expanse composed mostly of sodium chloride. It is managed as a Special Recreation Management Area and an Area of Critical Environmental Concern. Those figures describe the landscape, not the length or width of a race course, the area available to a private test, or permission to drive wherever you choose.

Protect the salt in the pit

Fluid leaks are both a safety issue and a resource-protection problem. SCTA event news published in May 2026 instructs racers to place a plastic tarp under each race vehicle in its pit stall to prevent leakage onto the salt. Bring a heavy-duty tarp sized to cover the car’s footprint, plus absorbent materials and containers appropriate to the current event instructions. Verify whether newer stipulations add requirements for fueling, draining, waste, or cleanup.

  • Lay the tarp before positioning the vehicle in the assigned stall.
  • Inspect for fuel, oil, coolant, brake fluid, and hydraulic leaks after unloading, warm-up, and any maintenance.
  • Keep drain pans, caps, plugs, and sealed waste containers ready before opening a system.
  • Clean spills immediately using the method required by the organizer; do not bury, dilute, or leave contaminated material on the salt.
  • Remove contaminated absorbent and other waste from the course area as directed by event staff.

Never treat a pit tarp as a substitute for repairing a leak. A car that repeatedly drips fluids should be taken out of service until the defect is corrected and the inspection implications are understood.

Compare build choices only after compliance is known

There is no meaningful universal ranking of equipment for a Bonneville car. Compare candidate parts, fabrication approaches, or service providers against the same five tests after the class and target speed are established.

Comparison axis Questions to answer Evidence to keep
Rule compliance Does the proposal satisfy the exact class and event stipulations? Rule references, drawings, approvals, and inspection notes
Suitability Is it appropriate for this speed, fuel, vehicle design, and operating environment? Manufacturer data and a qualified builder’s or inspector’s assessment
Inspection readiness Can an inspector see, identify, and verify the installation? Labels, certificates, photographs, and accessible mounting
Serviceability Can the crew inspect, repair, and obtain support for it at the event? Spare strategy, tools, technical documentation, and local support plan
Cost What is the total compliant cost, including fabrication, spares, and rework? Quotes based on the confirmed specification, not an initial generic estimate

If two options both comply, choose the one your crew can inspect and service reliably. A cheaper component that requires unplanned fabrication, lacks documentation, or cannot be repaired at the event may create more risk and cost than a higher-priced compliant solution.

Use a staged preparation schedule

Several weeks or months before the meet

  • Freeze the event, class, fuel, configuration, and target-speed definition.
  • Download and read the current SCTA-BNI rules, stipulations, inspection material, and rookie information.
  • Have a qualified fabricator and the sanctioning body’s technical contacts review unusual structures or proposed deviations before work begins.
  • Build a compliance matrix covering chassis, cockpit, restraints, tires, wheels, fuel, electrical, brakes, fire protection, and stopping equipment.
  • Order only components whose specification and certification match the applicable rule section.
  • Photograph hidden installations before panels or insulation cover them, and retain invoices, serial numbers, and certificates.

Before loading the trailer

  • Recheck the event page for forms, deadlines, rookie-orientation times, and updated stipulations.
  • Confirm registration and the driver’s medical form are complete and accepted.
  • Inspect every safety installation, fastener, control, label, line, and connector against the compliance matrix.
  • Pack the pit tarp, leak-containment supplies, tools, spares, documentation, and protective equipment required by the current instructions.
  • Review BLM notices for moisture, standing water, seasonal closures, weather, and event-area access.

On arrival

  1. Follow the organizer’s route and check-in instructions; do not cross a closure or enter an undesignated area.
  2. Set the tarp in the assigned pit stall before parking the race vehicle.
  3. Complete registration, rookie orientation, and technical inspection in the sequence specified by event staff.
  4. Correct inspection findings before staging a run, and obtain any required reinspection.
  5. Confirm the course briefing, start procedures, radio or communication expectations, and emergency instructions from the event officials.

Common mistakes and what to do instead

Choosing a speed first and a class later

Why it fails: The target speed can change the applicable rule set and the equipment that must be engineered into the car.

Copying a successful car’s specifications

Why it fails: A different body, fuel, engine, class, or speed category may be governed by different provisions.

Better approach: Use another car only as an engineering reference. Verify your own design against the current SCTA-BNI clauses and ask inspectors about differences.

Relying on an old rulebook

Why it fails: Event stipulations, forms, and operating restrictions can change between meets.

Better approach: Check document editions and event applicability immediately before fabrication and again before departure.

Arriving without leak containment

Why it fails: A fluid leak can contaminate the salt and violate pit instructions.

Better approach: Bring and deploy the required plastic tarp, monitor the car continuously, and repair leaks before operating.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Leaving inspection questions until race morning

Why it fails: A correction may require fabrication, replacement parts, or a reinspection that cannot be completed in the available window.

Better approach: Send drawings or questions to SCTA-BNI technical contacts during the build and arrive with a complete documentation packet.

Final go/no-go check

Do not load the car for a Bonneville run until you can answer yes to each applicable item:

  • The event, class, fuel, vehicle configuration, and target speed are written down and unchanged.
  • The current SCTA-BNI Rules & Records Book and event stipulations have been checked for that exact entry.
  • Every required safety system is installed according to its rule section, with documentation available for inspection.
  • The vehicle registration process, driver medical form, and any rookie-orientation requirement are complete or scheduled exactly as instructed.
  • BLM and event notices confirm that your dates, route, and intended areas are open to you.
  • A tarp and leak-containment plan are ready for the pit stall.
  • Any unresolved interpretation has been taken to SCTA-BNI technical officials rather than guessed.

The Bonneville Salt Flats are a managed, sensitive landscape and a sanctioned racing venue, not an open testing ground. A successful preparation is the one that reaches technical inspection with a documented, class-compliant car, a qualified driver, a permitted arrival plan, and a pit operation that leaves no fluid on the salt.
