If your Model 3 has no Radio source in the Media Player, it cannot receive local AM or FM broadcasts directly. You can still hear most stations by streaming them through Tesla’s available internet-radio app, the in-car browser, or a radio app on a Bluetooth-connected phone. A USB drive plays saved files only; it does not add live radio reception.
First check this particular car rather than relying on another Model 3’s equipment. Tesla says media sources and apps vary by market region, vehicle configuration, options, and software version.

Start by checking whether the car actually has a tuner
“No built-in radio” can mean two different things: the vehicle may have a terrestrial tuner but the owner has not selected its source, or the vehicle may genuinely lack that hardware. The quickest way to distinguish those cases is the Media Player.

Open the Media Player source list
- Open the Model 3’s Media Player.
- Open the list of available media sources.
- Look for a source labeled Radio.
If Radio appears, the car has a usable terrestrial-radio path exposed by its current configuration and software. Select it, then use the station list or the numeric keypad to tune a frequency.

If Radio is absent, do not assume that another Model 3’s screen will look the same. Tesla’s owner documentation says source and app availability can change with the market region, vehicle configuration, options, and software version. The source list in your own car is the practical confirmation of what is available to you.
If the Radio source is present
Use the station list
Select Radio in the Media Player and choose a station from the displayed list. This is the simplest route when the station you want is already shown.
Enter a frequency directly
When you know the station’s frequency, open the numeric keypad in the Radio source and enter it. This is useful when a station is not immediately visible in the list but broadcasts on a known AM or FM frequency.
The Radio source is the only method in this guide that receives a terrestrial AM or FM signal through the vehicle itself. If the source works, no phone, browser session, or separate data connection is needed for the radio signal.
If there is no Radio source: use streamed radio
Without a terrestrial tuner, the practical substitute is an internet stream. Streaming does not recreate AM/FM reception; it delivers the station’s online audio feed. Tesla’s manual lists TuneIn among supported media apps where available and explains that streaming services require a data connection, such as Wi-Fi or Premium Connectivity.

Option 1: use TuneIn or another available media app
- Open the Media Player.
- Review the available app and source icons.
- Select TuneIn if it is listed, or choose another internet-radio source offered for your car.
- Search for the station and start its stream.
App availability is not universal. A station or app may be absent because of the vehicle’s region, configuration, or software version, and the manual does not promise that every broadcaster will appear in the app’s directory. If the station is not listed, use the browser or phone method below.
Option 2: open the station’s stream in the vehicle browser
Many broadcasters publish a player on their own website. If the station’s page is reachable in the Tesla browser, open the page and start its player there. Tesla documents that browser audio can continue in the background after the browser is minimized, so you can return to another vehicle screen while the stream plays.
- Open the vehicle browser.
- Navigate to the station’s official web stream or player.
- Press the page’s play control and wait for audio to begin.
- Minimize the browser and verify that playback continues in the background.
This route depends on the station’s player and the browser’s compatibility with it. Tesla documents the background-audio behavior, not universal compatibility with every webpage, stream format, login requirement, or regional restriction. If the page will not play, switch to the station’s phone app or another available source rather than treating the failure as proof that the car cannot stream audio.
Option 3: play a radio app from a Bluetooth-connected phone
A phone can supply the stream when the station is available in a mobile app or mobile website. Pair the phone with the Model 3, select the vehicle’s Bluetooth audio source, and start the station on the phone. Tesla documents audio playback from a Bluetooth-connected phone.
- Make sure the phone is paired with the Model 3 over Bluetooth.
- On the vehicle’s Media Player, choose the Bluetooth source.
- Open the station’s radio app or mobile stream on the phone.
- Start playback and confirm that the car is receiving the phone’s audio.
The phone method is often the fallback when Tesla’s app list does not include a particular local station. It depends on the station’s app or stream, the phone’s own data or Wi-Fi connection, and a functioning Bluetooth connection. The vehicle is acting as the audio output; the phone is doing the streaming.

Understand the data-connection requirement
Internet radio is not the same as terrestrial radio. TuneIn, a browser player, and a phone app all obtain audio over a network. Tesla’s manual identifies Wi-Fi and Premium Connectivity as examples of data connections for streaming services.

If the app is listed but cannot load stations, check whether the car currently has usable connectivity.
- Using the vehicle browser: the browser must be able to reach the station’s page and receive its player data.
- Using a phone: the phone needs its own access to the station stream. Bluetooth carries the resulting audio to the car; Bluetooth itself does not provide the radio station’s internet connection.
Premium Connectivity is therefore not a replacement for a missing tuner; it is one possible way for the vehicle to obtain streamed media data. A Wi-Fi connection can serve the same basic purpose where available. The exact app and source options still depend on region, vehicle configuration, and software.
What a USB drive can and cannot do
The Model 3 recognizes a USB flash drive for playback of stored audio files. You can copy music or other recordings to the drive and play those files through the vehicle’s USB media source.
A USB drive does not receive a live AM or FM broadcast. It has no role in finding a local station, decoding a terrestrial signal, or supplying a missing tuner. If your objective is a live station, choose a terrestrial Radio source, an internet stream, or a phone app instead.
Can you retrofit a tuner?
Tesla service documentation includes an FM/HD/DAB tuner removal-and-replacement procedure for a 2024 Model 3 service configuration. That document establishes that a tuner component exists in that particular service configuration; it does not establish that every Model 3 was built with the same hardware or that an owner can add the component as a compatible retrofit.

What to provide Tesla Service
If terrestrial reception is important, identify the exact vehicle by its VIN and tell Tesla Service the model year, market, and current Media Player sources. Ask whether the vehicle was equipped for a tuner and whether an approved replacement or retrofit exists for that specific configuration.
Do not order a generic tuner based only on the existence of a service procedure. Compatibility can depend on the vehicle’s wiring, software, regional equipment, and the audio system configuration. The service procedure alone does not promise parts availability, owner-installation support, or operation after an upgrade.
Troubleshoot the method you chose
The Radio source is missing
- Reopen the Media Player’s source list and verify that Radio is genuinely absent rather than hidden among the available sources.
- Check the vehicle’s market, configuration, options, and software context; Tesla says these factors affect source availability.
- Move to an internet-radio method instead of trying to tune a frequency that the car does not expose.
The station is not listed in TuneIn or another Tesla app
- Try the station’s official web stream in the vehicle browser.
- If the browser player is unsuitable, open the station in a phone app and route the phone’s audio through Bluetooth.
- Remember that the manual’s supported-app list does not guarantee that every individual broadcaster is present.
The browser page opens but produces no sound
- Confirm that the page’s own play control has been pressed and that the station actually offers a reachable stream.
- Try minimizing the browser only after playback starts; Tesla documents background audio after minimization.
- If the page remains incompatible, use a phone app or another available media source. Web-player behavior can differ from one station site to another.
The phone is connected but the station is silent
- Check that the vehicle’s selected source is Bluetooth, not USB or another media source.
- Verify that the radio app is playing on the phone and that the phone still has data or Wi-Fi access.
- Try another station in the same app to distinguish a station-stream problem from a Bluetooth-audio problem.
Streaming buffers or stops
- Verify the data connection being used by the vehicle or phone.
- If you are using a Tesla app or browser, try Wi-Fi or another available vehicle data path.
- If you are using a phone, check the phone’s own connection rather than the car’s connectivity.
- Switch methods if the specific app or station stream is unreliable; a browser failure does not rule out Bluetooth playback.
USB audio plays, but no live station appears
That behavior is expected. USB playback is for files saved on the flash drive, not for live broadcast reception. Use streaming or a functioning Radio source for a live station.

You want local news or traffic without using a phone
Check for the Radio source first. If it is present, tune the station directly. If it is absent, use a Tesla internet-radio app or the vehicle browser, provided the car has a data connection and the station offers a compatible stream.

Open the station’s web player in the vehicle browser. If that page does not work, use the station’s phone app and select Bluetooth in the Model 3’s Media Player.

You have no Premium Connectivity
Premium Connectivity is not the only possible data path. Tesla’s manual gives Wi-Fi as another example for streaming services. A phone can also stream the station using its own data connection and send the audio to the car over Bluetooth.
You only need music for an offline drive
Copy audio files to a USB flash drive and use the USB media source. This solves offline playback, but it does not provide live AM/FM content or automatically update a station’s programming.
You are considering an FM transmitter
An FM transmitter still needs a receiver in the car to pick up the transmitter’s signal. It therefore does not solve the fundamental problem of a Model 3 that lacks a terrestrial radio source. Use an internet stream, Bluetooth phone audio, or obtain a vehicle-specific answer from Tesla Service instead.

A concise decision process
- Check the Media Player: if Radio is listed, select it and use the station list or frequency keypad.
- If Radio is absent, check available apps: use TuneIn or another listed internet-radio service when the station is available.
- If the station is not in the app: try its web stream in the vehicle browser.
- If the browser does not work: play the station on a paired phone and choose the vehicle’s Bluetooth source.
- For offline audio only: use a USB flash drive containing saved files.
- For a hardware solution: give Tesla Service the VIN and ask about this exact vehicle; do not infer retrofit compatibility from a service procedure for another configuration.
What to expect from each approach
A built-in Radio source gives you direct terrestrial tuning, but only vehicles equipped with the relevant tuner expose it. Internet-radio apps and browser streams can provide live station programming without that hardware, yet they depend on network access and on the station’s online availability. Phone Bluetooth is flexible because the phone can use apps the car does not list, but it adds a separate device and connection to the listening chain. USB is dependable for files you already own, but it is not a live-radio substitute.
The correct answer for a particular Model 3 is therefore determined in two checks: whether Radio appears in that car’s Media Player, and which streaming paths are available under its current region, configuration, software, and data connection.
