How to plan depot charging for a fleet of Mercedes eSprinter vans

A practical, battery-specific method for sizing eSprinter depot chargers, electrical service, software controls and operating procedures without overbuilding the site.

Plan an eSprinter depot around the energy each route requires and the time each van is parked—not simply around the number of vehicles. For a predictable overnight return, North American eSprinters can generally use J1772 Level 2 AC charging at up to about 9.6 kW, while Mercedes-Benz publishes AC input up to 11 kW for some markets and model configurations. Install enough connectors for the vans that must charge at the same time, then use managed charging to keep the site below its utility limit. Add DC fast charging only where short turnarounds, split shifts, missed overnight sessions, or recovery operations justify its higher electrical and demand burden.

The correct design starts with a vehicle-and-route matrix, converts duty cycles into required kilowatt-hours, models coincident electrical load, and validates the utility service, civil work, software, and operating rules. Battery size, charging limits, connector standards, tariffs, and local code vary by market and model year, so freeze those assumptions from each van’s build sheet before ordering equipment.

Mercedes-Benz Group’s current technical information describes three usable battery capacities—56, 81, and 113 kWh—depending on market and configuration. It lists AC charging up to 11 kW and DC charging up to 115 kW. Under the manufacturer’s optimum conditions, a 56 kWh battery takes about 28 minutes and a 113 kWh battery about 42 minutes for a 10–80% DC session. Those figures are not universal promises: battery temperature, initial state of charge, vehicle configuration, and available charger power change the result.

U.S. 2025 material identifies 81 and 113 kWh batteries. Its 240-volt, 32-amp wallbox examples charge from 0–100% in approximately 10 hours for the 81 kWh battery and 12.5 hours for the 113 kWh battery. The same guide gives approximately 32 minutes (81 kWh) and 42 minutes (113 kWh) for 10–80% DC charging at up to 115 kW. These are manufacturer figures for the specified vehicles and conditions, not a guarantee that every depot will deliver those times.

The North American eSprinter Product and Upfit Considerations document identifies a combined charging socket, Type 1 (J1772 type), located behind the Mercedes-Benz star, and Level 2 AC charging up to 9.6 kW. That 9.6 kW limit is the hard planning input for applicable North American vehicles; do not substitute an 11 kW assumption without checking the relevant model-year documentation.

Build a vehicle matrix before choosing chargers

List every van individually or by an identical configuration group. At minimum, record model year, market, VIN or build sheet, usable battery capacity, wheelbase and body variant, AC input limit, DC capability, connector type, and the state-of-charge target required at the next departure. A mixed fleet may contain vehicles that look identical but have different batteries or charging ceilings.

Do not combine the 56 kWh global figure with U.S. 81 or 113 kWh assumptions in one sizing calculation. Confirm whether a quoted specification is usable energy or nominal pack capacity, and retain the document date with the value. The vehicle’s documented AC ceiling and connector are equipment constraints: installing a higher-rated EVSE does not make the van accept more power.

Information to capture for each vehicle group

  • Market and model year, with the source document or build sheet.
  • Usable battery capacity and any battery-option code.
  • J1772 or other inlet type, and whether DC charging hardware is fitted.
  • Maximum AC and DC input accepted by that configuration.
  • Typical departure state of charge and minimum arrival state of charge.
  • Required next-departure state of charge, including reserve for weather, detours, and service delays.
  • Wheelbase, body, payload, refrigeration, lift-gate, or auxiliary loads that affect energy use.

Measure the duty cycle instead of guessing energy demand

Collect several weeks of operating data before final design. A useful log includes departure and return timestamps, route miles or kilometres, payload, outside temperature, heating or air-conditioning use, starting and ending state of charge, charging energy delivered, and the next departure requirement. Include exceptional days such as holiday peaks, traffic diversions, and unusually cold or hot weather.

For each route, calculate the energy that must be restored during the available dwell window. A practical planning expression is:

Required charging energy = route energy used + charging losses + operating reserve − energy already available at return.

Use measured vehicle energy data where possible. If only distance is available, apply a conservative consumption assumption and label it as an estimate; then validate it with real telematics. Charging losses include conversion and cable losses, so the electricity-meter reading will exceed the battery energy added. The reserve should reflect the consequence of arriving short: a parcel route with a fixed replacement van may need a different reserve from an emergency-service fleet operating far from the depot.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Calculate the dwell window as the time between a vehicle’s actual return and its required next departure, not the depot’s nominal “overnight” period. A van returning at 8:30 p.m. for a 5:00 a.m. dispatch has less than nine hours after allowing for parking, inspection, and plug-in. Conversely, vehicles parked through a full weekend may need fewer simultaneous connectors if the schedule is managed deliberately.

Use overnight AC Level 2 as the baseline when dwell is long

For predictable, long dwell, AC Level 2 normally offers the simplest depot baseline. The published eSprinter limits—about 9.6 kW in North American upfitter documentation and up to 11 kW in global specifications—fit an overnight operating pattern. The U.S. examples of roughly 10 hours for 81 kWh and 12.5 hours for 113 kWh from empty to full illustrate why a full-size battery may not recover from a deeply depleted state during a short parking window.

Size connectors for the vehicles that must charge simultaneously, not automatically for the entire fleet. If 20 vans return in a staggered pattern and only 12 require energy before the earliest departure, 12 ports may meet the schedule—provided the charging-management system can assign them reliably. If all 20 return together and must leave together, fewer ports would require a validated rotation plan and enough dwell to complete every session.

Connector count is different from power capacity

A depot can have many connectors but cap their aggregate power. For example, a site may provide a port at every parking bay while software limits the combined draw to the utility-approved level. This improves parking flexibility and resilience, but it does not create extra energy. Confirm through a time-based simulation that the managed limit still restores every vehicle before departure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Allow for charging losses and tapering

Nominal charger power is not the same as battery energy delivered each hour. Conversion losses reduce delivered energy, and charging may taper near a high state of charge. Use the vehicle and EVSE manufacturer data for detailed modelling; do not divide battery capacity by nameplate kW and call the result a guaranteed completion time.

Add DC fast charging only for a defined operational need

DC charging is useful when a van has a short turnaround, works split shifts, returns late, misses its assigned AC session, or must be recovered quickly after an unexpected route. The published 10–80% estimates—about 28 minutes for the 56 kWh global variant, 32 minutes for the U.S. 81 kWh example, and 42 minutes for the 113 kWh examples—are manufacturer figures at up to 115 kW under specified conditions. Real sessions vary with temperature, battery state, charger sharing, and vehicle configuration.

Do not install DC hardware merely to compensate for an unmeasured parking process. First determine how often the exception occurs, how many vehicles are affected at once, and whether moving departure times or adding AC connectors solves it. A small number of strategically placed DC dispensers may cover contingency demand while the majority of bays remain AC.

Questions to answer before specifying DC

  • How many vehicles require a rapid top-up in the same 30- to 60-minute period?
  • What minimum state of charge is needed to complete the next route?
  • Can the site’s service and transformer support the coincident DC load?
  • What happens when the sole DC dispenser is offline?
  • Will drivers queue safely without blocking departures, pedestrians, or emergency access?

Model the electrical plant around managed peak load

The service requirement is determined by the charging schedule and all other site loads, not by multiplying charger count by nameplate power. Model the coincident demand of AC EVSE, DC equipment, building HVAC, refrigeration, workshop machinery, lighting, compressors, battery storage if proposed, and future fleet growth. A managed system that staggers sessions can materially reduce the peak compared with every charger starting at once.

Ask a qualified electrical engineer to coordinate the utility service, transformer, switchgear, distribution panels, feeders, overcurrent protection, grounding, communications wiring, trenching, bollards, drainage, lighting, and vehicle circulation. Long feeder runs can affect voltage drop and conductor sizing. Outdoor equipment needs an enclosure and environmental rating appropriate to local exposure, and the design must meet applicable electrical, fire, accessibility, and workplace rules.

Utility review and expansion allowance

Request a written utility capacity review and interconnection requirements before committing to equipment. Identify whether the existing service has spare capacity, whether a transformer or service upgrade is required, how demand charges are calculated, and how long utility work may take. Reserve conduit, switchgear space, and panel capacity for planned fleet growth where the incremental civil cost is low. Do not assume a future upgrade will be available on the schedule promised by a sales quotation.

Why a simple charger-count calculation fails

Twenty 9.6 kW ports have a theoretical connected load of 192 kW, but a managed schedule may never draw that amount simultaneously. Conversely, ten ports can create an unacceptable peak if all start at the same time alongside a workshop compressor. The engineering model must use minute-by-minute or similarly granular arrival, departure, energy, and priority data, then test late returns and fault conditions.

Specify commercial EVSE, not just a plug and cable

For North American eSprinters, verify the J1772-type inlet and the applicable 9.6 kW Level 2 limit in the vehicle documentation before ordering. Require the EVSE specification to state connector, continuous current, enclosure rating, cable reach, operating-temperature range, communications protocol, load-management capability, warranty, service response, and compatibility with the selected fleet-management platform.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A plug-in consumer unit may be electrically incapable of serving a commercial depot’s duty cycle or may not satisfy local code, physical protection, networking, payment or access-control, and maintenance requirements. Confirm that the cable can reach the inlet without crossing a travel lane, that retractors or holsters protect the connector, and that bollards shield equipment from vehicle impact.

Resilience and maintenance requirements

  • Provide a documented process for isolating a failed charger and assigning the vehicle to another port.
  • Keep spare connectors, holsters, and protective covers appropriate to the installed equipment.
  • Specify remote fault alerts and a defined service-response time.
  • Test network loss, power restoration, emergency stop operation, and safe restart during commissioning.
  • Ensure a driver can identify a ready, charging, faulted, or unavailable port without ambiguity.

Use software to turn available power into departure-ready vehicles

Vehicle and charger telemetry should assign priority, enforce departure-ready targets, cap site demand, record energy by vehicle, and alert staff to faults. Define a hierarchy before commissioning: for example, vehicles leaving earliest receive priority, then vehicles with the lowest projected state of charge, while flexible vehicles charge during remaining capacity.

Mercedes-Benz identifies ChargePoint Fleet Depot Charging as a commercial path combining charging hardware, telematics, and fleet-management software, and says depot-building assistance is available. Confirm current territory, enrollment, hardware compatibility, data ownership, service terms, and pricing directly with the relevant commercial representatives; availability is not established universally by the vehicle specifications.

Operating rules the software should enforce

  • Departure-ready target and deadline for every vehicle or route.
  • Maximum site demand and a response when the utility limit is approached.
  • Automatic priority for low-state-of-charge or early-departing vans.
  • Exception handling for late returns, emergency dispatches, and manual overrides.
  • Energy and fault records by vehicle, charger, shift, and date.
  • Alerts when a cable is connected but charging has not started.
  • Preconditioning rules that distinguish cabin comfort from battery energy needed for the route.

Lay out the depot for safe, repeatable movements

Charging design and traffic design are inseparable. Mark one-way flows where practical, keep reversing and pedestrian movements visible, protect chargers with bollards, and leave enough cable reach for the actual inlet location behind the front star. Prevent a plugged-in van from blocking a fire lane, loading area, wash bay, or the next vehicle’s departure path.

Decide whether drivers plug in immediately on return or whether trained yard staff connect vehicles in a fixed order. The second approach can improve utilization but creates a staffing dependency and a failure mode if a vehicle is parked in the wrong bay. Use durable bay identifiers tied to the fleet-management system, and provide weather-protected cable storage to reduce connector damage.

Compare viable designs on more than installed charger count

When two or more layouts meet the route requirement, compare them using the same duty-cycle and utility assumptions.

Comparison axis Questions to answer
Overnight AC versus DC turnaround Which routes genuinely require rapid energy, and how often?
Connectors versus managed power Will more ports with a lower aggregate limit meet every departure?
Electrical cost and demand exposure What service, transformer, and tariff consequences follow each design?
Resilience Can a van charge when one port, network link, or dispenser fails?
Expansion Is conduit, panel, and parking capacity reserved for fleet growth?
Software interoperability Can vehicle, EVSE, and fleet systems exchange status and priority data?
Maintenance response Who resolves faults, and within what contractual time?
Parking practicality Can drivers connect safely without blocking circulation?

A design with fewer high-power chargers may look compact but can create a single point of failure and high demand peaks. A design with more AC ports and a managed cap may cost more in trenching while reducing queueing and improving fault tolerance. Select using the operating schedule and total site risk, not a headline kW number.

Build a realistic commercial case

Total project cost cannot be quoted honestly from battery size alone. Obtain site-specific prices for EVSE, utility service or transformer upgrades, switchgear, feeders, trenching, pavement restoration, bollards, drainage, lighting, networking, commissioning, software, maintenance, and downtime during construction. Include electricity tariffs and demand charges under the actual utility rate, not a generic per-kilowatt-hour assumption.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

No universal installed-depot cost, demand-charge estimate, or payback period is established by the cited official materials. Check grants, tax treatment, and local program rules with the relevant authority because eligibility and deadlines depend on jurisdiction, ownership, and project timing. Ask the utility, a Mercedes-Benz commercial-vehicle representative, ChargePoint, and the project electrical engineer to confirm location-specific assumptions in writing.

Commission the system against the schedule, not just the hardware

  1. Verify every vehicle. Match VINs or build sheets to battery, connector, AC limit, and DC capability.
  2. Load the duty cycle. Import several weeks of departure, return, route, payload, weather, state-of-charge, and energy data.
  3. Run worst-case days. Test cold or hot weather, late returns, simultaneous arrivals, and the highest planned payload.
  4. Test managed charging. Confirm that the site cap is respected while each vehicle reaches its required departure target.
  5. Disconnect equipment deliberately. Simulate a failed AC port, a failed DC dispenser, network loss, and utility power restoration.
  6. Train drivers and yard staff. Cover plug-in order, cable inspection, fault reporting, manual override, and safe parking.
  7. Review after launch. Compare scheduled versus actual energy, missed departure targets, peak demand, and charger uptime; adjust priorities before buying more hardware.

Common planning errors and their fixes

Using one battery figure for every market

Problem: A global 56 kWh specification is applied to a U.S. fleet, or an 81 kWh assumption is applied to 113 kWh vans.

Fix: Keep separate market and model-year rows in the vehicle matrix and use each group’s documented usable capacity.

Counting plugs without modelling dwell

Problem: The depot buys one connector per van but vehicles arrive late, depart early, or share a limited power budget.

Fix: Simulate actual arrival and departure timestamps, then test the schedule under late-return and fault scenarios.

Installing DC to solve an operations problem

Problem: Fast charging masks poor parking discipline or missing route data while increasing electrical and demand requirements.

Fix: Measure exception frequency first; use managed AC, schedule changes, or a small contingency DC installation where they solve the measured need.

Ignoring non-EV loads

Problem: Chargers work during a test but trip protection when refrigeration, HVAC, or workshop equipment starts.

Fix: Include all coincident building and process loads in the engineer’s service model and test them together during commissioning.

Leaving software decisions until the end

Problem: Hardware is installed without a reliable way to prioritize vehicles, cap demand, or identify faults.

Fix: Specify telemetry, communications, data retention, alerts, and manual procedures in the EVSE procurement document.

Practical decision rule

Choose an overnight AC-first depot when most vans have a predictable multi-hour return window and the route energy can be restored within that window. Add managed power and extra connectors when simultaneous arrivals are the constraint. Add DC capacity only for quantified short-turnaround or recovery demand, and size the service for the resulting coincident load plus the rest of the facility. Recheck every assumption against the actual eSprinter market, model year, and build sheet before construction.
