Plan an electric excavator’s energy supply around the exact machine, its real duty cycle and the power available at the worksite. Confirm the approved charger, connector and charging limits before choosing a timetable. Then place charging or battery exchanges in planned idle periods, provide mobile energy when fixed power is unavailable, and monitor the battery during the shift so the plan can change before production stops.
Battery swapping is practical only when the excavator is designed for a compatible exchange battery or powerbox. Batteries, chargers, connectors and charging times are not interchangeable assumptions between brands or models.

Start with the excavator, not a generic runtime
There is no universal answer to how long an electric excavator will run or how often it must charge. Energy use changes with the machine, attachment, digging and travel pattern, operator technique, ground conditions, temperature and other operating conditions. Wacker Neuson states that running time varies with the application and application conditions. Use the excavator’s current manual and manufacturer or dealer duty-cycle guidance as the primary source for your estimate.

- Make, model, model year or edition and battery configuration.
- Approved charger type, connector, voltage, current and maximum charging rate.
- Whether the manufacturer permits charging while installed, external battery exchange, or a designated powerbox.
- Expected attachments, digging depth, lifting or breaking work, travel distance and ground conditions.
- Shift length, breaks, handover periods, weather-related pauses and any time when the excavator can be idle.
- Minimum battery state at which the operator or site manager wants a charging or swap decision made.
Do not convert a runtime statement from another excavator into a promise for yours. Even a machine with a similar battery capacity can consume energy differently because of hydraulics, software limits, attachments and the work cycle.
Use a duty-cycle estimate with a margin
List the planned tasks in time order and mark which are high-load, moderate-load or low-load. The labels are for your own planning; the manufacturer’s data should determine the energy estimate. Include travel between work areas, setup, idling with systems energized and any auxiliary equipment powered from the excavator. Leave a reserve for unplanned digging, a slower production rate or a delayed break rather than scheduling the battery to reach empty at the end of a task.
Wacker Neuson says one battery charge is sufficient for the work required on a regular working day in over 90% of its customer applications. That is a manufacturer statement about its customer applications, not an excavator-wide statistic. It can support a conversation about duty-cycle fit, but it does not remove the need to check your model and job.

Check the worksite’s power before selecting a charging plan
Site power is a first-order constraint. A charging schedule is useless if the approved supply is unavailable at the planned time or cannot deliver the charger’s required voltage and current. Map the electrical source, the charging location and every other load that will share it.
Record the supply and the charging path
- Identify the available grid connection, generator or other source, including voltage, phase, current limit and connection type.
- Confirm whether the source is continuous during the shift or subject to site hours, load shedding or a temporary connection.
- Measure the practical cable route and the distance from the charging area to each excavator’s work zone.
- List other simultaneous loads such as cranes, welding equipment, lighting, pumps, compressors and welfare facilities.
- Check ground conditions, traffic routes, weather exposure, flood risk and protection from impact at the charging position.
- Have a qualified local electrical professional confirm installation, protection and jurisdiction-specific requirements.
The Go-ENE product page illustrates why equipment-specific information matters: its displayed configuration includes a 195 kWh main unit and an optional 130 kWh sub-unit, with charging examples for selected models. Those figures are product specifications shown on that page, not a universal requirement or a transferable charge-time promise. Use the charger and energy-storage specifications for your excavator and configuration.
Account for shared and changing loads
If several excavators or machines charge from one constrained supply, do not schedule every charger to start at once unless the source and charging system are explicitly sized for that load. Stagger starts, reserve capacity for essential site systems and define who can change the order. A temporary construction connection can also be reduced by weather, a generator fault or another contractor’s demand, so the plan needs an alternative energy path.

Build a provisional energy schedule around work breaks
Put charging windows where the excavator is already expected to be idle: meal breaks, shift changes, surveying, delivery waits, attachment changes and planned relocation. A short opportunity charge may be useful when the machine and charger allow it, but do not assume that a brief connection provides a fixed percentage of battery capacity. The manufacturer’s charging curve and limits determine that result.

- Enter the shift plan. Record each task, its expected start and finish, the excavator assigned to it and any planned idle period.
- Estimate battery trend. Use the manufacturer’s duty-cycle information and your task list to estimate the battery state at each break. Mark assumptions that are uncertain.
- Reserve charging windows. Place the approved charger in the longest or most reliable idle periods first. Keep a reserve window before the expected minimum battery state.
- Check the power budget. Compare the charger’s demand with the site supply and concurrent loads. Stagger machines when necessary.
- Assign an owner. Name the person who confirms connector condition, starts and ends charging, records battery state and authorizes a change to the sequence.
- Set trigger points. Decide what happens if the actual battery state is below plan, the charger is unavailable or a task overruns: move the next charge, dispatch mobile power, swap a compatible unit or change the task order.
Hitachi Construction Machinery’s May 19–21, 2026 demonstration of two battery-powered excavators, the ZE85 and ZE135, with a Go-ENE mobile energy-storage system provides a useful operating model. The plan used the daily work details and predicted battery level, then compared the predicted and observed battery levels in real time to adjust charging timing and methods. The purpose was to avoid waiting for a charge or running out of power. This is a planning method, not a guarantee that those machines, capacities or timings will apply at another site.
Choose among fixed charging, mobile energy and designed swaps
| Approach | When it can fit | What to verify | What is not established universally |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fixed site charging | The site has a suitable connection and a safe, accessible charging area. | Approved charger and connector; available voltage and current; charging windows; shared load; installation and protection requirements; cable access. | No universal installation cost, charge duration or electrical-code design. |
| Mobile power or storage | There is no fixed charger, the work area moves or the site supply is limited. | Machine compatibility; replenishment source; dispatch and travel time; delivery coverage; vehicle access; charging and unloading procedure. | No universal service area, price, capacity or performance at every site. |
| Designed battery or powerbox swap | The excavator is purpose-built for a compatible exchange battery or powerbox. | Approved unit; number of charged and depleted units; handling equipment; storage and temperature limits; charging location; safe exchange procedure. | No arbitrary battery compatibility, standard swap time or universal spare-unit count. |
Compare these paths using the exact machine, duty cycle, site and local supplier quotation. Include downtime, delivery and travel time, access for heavy equipment, storage and handling, and the consequences of a missed charging window. The available evidence does not establish a single best approach or a general cost ranking.
When fixed charging is the right foundation
Fixed charging is usually easiest to coordinate when the excavator returns to a known area and the site can provide the approved supply for the required duration. It avoids moving an energy vehicle through a busy worksite, but it depends on installation, access and reliable power.
Set up the charging area
- Locate the charger where the excavator can park without blocking haul routes, emergency access or other equipment.
- Protect the charger, connector and cable from vehicle impact, standing water, mud and unauthorized handling.
- Provide a clear parking orientation so the connector is not stretched or routed across a traffic lane.
- Post the machine-specific charging instructions and emergency isolation procedure.
- Inspect connectors, cable insulation and cooling equipment before each shift and report damage rather than improvising an adapter.
Confirm with the manufacturer or dealer whether charging must be supervised, whether the battery needs a particular temperature range, and whether the excavator can remain connected after reaching its limit. Never substitute a consumer power station, generic electric-vehicle cable, adapter or replacement battery without documented compatibility for the excavator.

Coordinate multiple machines
For two or more excavators, create a queue that protects production-critical machines and leaves capacity for an unscheduled top-up. If the supply cannot support simultaneous charging, use staggered start times or separate circuits approved for the equipment. Record actual start and finish times; a nominal timetable can drift when a machine arrives late or a task runs long.

How mobile charging works when the site has little or no fixed power
Mobile storage or a charging vehicle can bring energy to a moving worksite, but the service must be planned as a logistics operation. Confirm where the mobile unit is replenished, how long it takes to travel and position, and whether the vehicle can safely reach the excavator without crossing unstable ground or active traffic.
Evidence from a demonstrated mobile-power operation
Hitachi Construction Machinery and Bell Energy reported a five-day demonstration from November 10–14, 2025, at a construction site in Fuchu, Tokyo. A mobile power supply vehicle recharged a ZX55U-6EB excavator several times during the day after charging at a nearby station. The operating plan used the work schedule, predicted machine status and charging-station status. The excavator operated outside during the demonstration.
This case shows that a mobile replenishment chain can support a workday without a fixed charger at the work face. It does not establish availability in your region, a universal delivery time, a standard vehicle capacity or performance under your terrain and weather. Ask the provider for a site-specific method statement, compatibility confirmation, replenishment plan and quote.
Plan the mobile unit’s route and handoff
- Identify the exact excavator connector and charging limits in the service order.
- Confirm the mobile unit’s usable energy, output limits and required parking or stabilization area.
- Map the route, turning space, gradients, overhead clearances and exclusion zones.
- Schedule arrival before the excavator reaches the planned minimum battery state, allowing for traffic and setup.
- Define who isolates the excavator, connects the system, verifies charging and releases the vehicle.
- Record energy delivered, start and finish time and any delay so the next dispatch is based on actual site data.
Where the grid is unavailable, mobile storage can be replenished away from the worksite. The New Zealand Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority (EECA) notes that many construction sites are not connected to the grid in a way that allows battery charging. That observation is specific to its report and New Zealand context, but it highlights why the replenishment leg is as important as the equipment at the job.
When a battery or powerbox swap makes sense
Swapping can reduce the excavator’s waiting time if a charged exchange unit is ready when the installed unit is depleted. It also shifts the planning problem from a charging window to inventory, handling, storage and transport. The machine must be designed for the system; physical fit alone is not proof of electrical, software or safety compatibility.
Examples of purpose-built systems
Honda and Komatsu have described a battery-sharing development effort for a micro excavator using Honda Mobile Power Packs. Danfoss describes exchangeable powerboxes on specific European Doosan electric excavators. These examples demonstrate that designed swap systems exist. They do not mean a battery from one excavator can be installed in another, or that an exchange unit can be connected without the maker’s procedure.

Build the swap inventory plan
- Confirm the exact approved exchange battery or powerbox part and the excavator models that accept it.
- Determine how many charged units are needed for the shift from the machine’s duty cycle and the supplier’s handling time, not from a generic runtime.
- Provide a charging location for depleted units and a method to identify charged, cooling, faulted and ready units.
- Check lifting points, mass, handling aids, access width and the competence required to remove and install the unit.
- Follow manufacturer limits for temperature, state of charge, storage duration, ventilation, fire protection and transport.
- Keep a contingency for a unit that fails inspection or cannot be charged in time.
A swap plan is not complete until depleted units can be moved safely and recharged. If the site cannot handle that reverse flow, swapping may simply relocate the delay.

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Start of shift | Assigned work | Displayed state and temperature warning, if any | First charging or swap window | Exceptions noted |
| Each break or task change | Completed and remaining work | Displayed state | Next planned window | Move window, dispatch mobile unit or continue |
| Charging or swap | Location and unit ID, if applicable | State at start and finish | Expected completion | Actual completion and cause of variance |
| End of shift | Work completed | State on parking | Overnight charging or storage | Next-shift handover |
If the observed battery trend is falling faster than forecast, act before the excavator reaches the production-stopping threshold. Move a planned charge earlier, dispatch the mobile unit, exchange an approved unit or resequence lower-load work. If the battery is holding more charge than expected, do not remove the reserve blindly; use the information to improve the next estimate after the shift.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Review the plan after every shift
Compare planned and actual energy use, charging time, swap time, waiting time, mobile travel and work-sequence changes. Identify whether the variance came from the task itself, weather, operator behavior, a delayed delivery, shared site power or a charging fault. Update the next shift’s schedule with the observed pattern while keeping a reserve for uncertainty.
Do not turn a short demonstration or a single operator’s shift into a universal runtime claim. The most useful result of a pilot is a site-specific record of energy consumed per task, the time required to recover energy and the reliability of each logistics step.
Battery life and long-term planning
Battery degradation affects future capacity, but the available evidence does not provide a guaranteed service life for a particular excavator battery. EECA’s report says modern electric construction-equipment batteries were too new for a complete machine battery life cycle to have been observed at the time of its assessment. It cites an expected 1,000 to 5,000 charge cycles for two common cathode types discussed in the report, based on a cited IDTechEx report. That range is an estimate for the chemistry discussion, not a warranty or service-life promise for your excavator.

Common failure modes and corrective actions
The excavator reaches the charge window with less battery than planned
Check whether the task was more demanding, travel increased, an attachment changed, the machine idled energized or the battery was colder or hotter than expected. Start the reserved window, shorten or resequence the next task, and notify the person responsible for mobile or swap support. Record the cause for the next estimate.
The charger is available but the site supply trips
Stop adding load, follow the site isolation procedure and have a qualified person check the source, protection and concurrent equipment. Do not defeat protective devices or use an unapproved adapter. If the approved alternative is mobile power or a swap, activate it before the excavator reaches its minimum state.
A mobile charging vehicle cannot reach the work area
Use the route and access assessment made during planning. Move the handoff point to a stable safe area, use an approved cable arrangement if permitted, or change the dispatch timing. Never drive a heavy energy vehicle onto ground that has not been assessed for its mass and turning requirements.
A spare battery or powerbox is not accepted by the excavator
Stop the exchange and verify the part number, software or authentication requirement and the manufacturer’s approved model list. Do not force a connector or attempt a cross-brand substitution. Keep a quarantined area for units that fail inspection and arrange the maker’s support.
The schedule repeatedly produces waiting time
Compare the planned and actual battery traces, not just the final state. The charging window may be too late, the charger may deliver less power than assumed, or the mobile unit may need more travel and setup time. Move the window earlier, stagger machines or increase approved energy capacity only after the machine maker and electrical provider confirm compatibility.

What the published demonstrations do—and do not—prove
Hitachi’s May 2026 demonstration operated two excavators with a Go-ENE mobile energy-storage system and adjusted charging from live battery data. Hitachi and Bell Energy’s November 2025 demonstration used a mobile power supply vehicle to recharge a ZX55U-6EB several times a day over five days in Tokyo. These cases support the feasibility of coordinated energy logistics under their stated conditions.
