The most reliable way to plan a trip near Tesla’s Gigafactory Texas is to treat truck traffic as variable, check road conditions immediately before leaving, and compare I-35 with toll SH 130 based on your endpoints. No current public source establishes facility-specific truck volumes, peak truck hours, or a guaranteed faster route. Build flexibility into the trip instead of planning around an assumed “truck rush hour.”
What is at the Austin facility, and why truck traffic can affect your route
Tesla describes Gigafactory Texas as an Austin-area facility along the Colorado River. The company lists Model Y production there and identifies Cybertruck as the product’s home facility. Tesla’s facility page describes approximately 2,500 acres and more than 10 million square feet of factory floor. Those figures indicate a very large industrial destination, but they do not tell you how many trucks are on nearby roads at a particular time.

Freight movements can interact with ordinary commuter, visitor and neighborhood traffic on the approaches to the plant. The practical implication is not that trucks appear at a predictable hour. It is that a route can be affected by a work-zone layout, an incident, a delivery movement or congestion on a connecting highway that changes during your trip.

The available material does not provide a current truck count for the facility, a truck-specific peak period, a live queue length or a reliable comparison of travel times between competing routes. Do not schedule your departure around an internet claim that trucks are always heaviest at a particular hour. Conditions can vary by day, construction activity, incidents and the origin and destination of your trip.

Use I-35 and SH 130 as a route decision, not a fixed rule
SH 130 is a toll-road alternative to I-35 through Central Texas. A TxDOT and Texas A&M Transportation Institute presentation dated December 4, 2024 describes SH 130 as a 91-mile corridor and characterizes its southern segments as a heavy-freight corridor. The presentation reported 108% commercial-truck-traffic growth on those southern segments since 2019 and about 80% unutilized capacity throughout the day at that time. These are dated presentation figures, not measurements of current 2026 conditions and not a promise that SH 130 will be faster for your trip.
| Decision factor | I-35 | SH 130 |
|---|---|---|
| Basic role | Primary north-south route through the Austin region; often the direct choice when your endpoints are near I-35. | Toll alternative that may fit trips whose origin, destination and approach align with the eastern bypass. |
| Truck context | Current truck volume or a facility-specific peak period is not established in the cited material. | The December 4, 2024 TxDOT/TTI presentation called the southern segments a heavy-freight corridor, reported 108% growth since 2019 and about 80% unused capacity at that time. |
| Toll cost | No toll-price figure is required for the ordinary I-35 choice. | Current toll cost is not stated in the cited material; check the applicable toll information before committing. |
| Current travel time | Not stated; check live conditions before departure. | Not stated; the historical capacity figure is not a live travel-time forecast. |
| Best initial question | Does this route place you close to your endpoint with fewer connecting changes? | Does avoiding a current I-35 problem justify the toll and the extra distance or connections for your endpoints? |
Match the route to your endpoints
Start with the complete trip, not just the highway name. A route that looks attractive on a map can lose its advantage if it leaves you with a long final approach to Tesla Road, a difficult connection to a workplace entrance or an inconvenient neighborhood street. Enter your actual origin and destination, then compare the current route choices after checking closures. If you are driving through Austin rather than visiting the factory, the best alternative may be the one that keeps you away from the facility approaches altogether.
Price the toll before you reroute
SH 130 is not a free detour. The cited material does not establish a current toll amount, discount or payment arrangement for your vehicle. Check the current toll information for your vehicle class and account before choosing it. A modest time saving can be outweighed by the toll, fuel and additional distance; conversely, a significant incident on I-35 can make the toll worthwhile. Make that comparison with current conditions, not with the 2024 presentation’s capacity statistic.

Do not treat capacity as a guarantee
The presentation’s “about 80% unutilized capacity throughout the day” statement describes the southern SH 130 segments at the time of that 2024 presentation. It does not mean the road is empty, that every segment has the same conditions, or that it will remain uncongested on the day you travel. Weather, crashes, construction and local access traffic can change the result.
Check road conditions in the right order
Use official closure information for the road authority that controls each part of your route, then confirm conditions again close to departure. Austin’s right-of-way street-closure page is useful for known and expected full closures on major city roadways, but the city explicitly limits what the list covers.
- Map the whole trip. Identify your origin, destination, planned highway, final approach and at least one fallback. Note whether any portion is on Tesla Road, Harold Green Road or another local street.
- Check Austin’s closure page. Review the City of Austin Transportation and Public Works Right-of-Way Street Closures page for listed full closures on major city roadways.
- Check the other jurisdictions. The city list does not cover roads managed by TxDOT or other agencies. Look up current conditions for I-35, SH 130 and any state-controlled connector separately through the responsible authority.
- Look for the type of restriction. A full closure is not the only problem. Partial lane closures, narrowed lanes, temporary traffic control, emergency response and unreported incidents can slow a route without appearing on the city’s major-closure table.
- Recheck shortly before leaving. Work schedules can change. A clear listing earlier in the day is not a guarantee for your departure window.
- Save a fallback. Decide in advance whether you will stay on I-35, pay for SH 130, delay the trip or stop before entering a congested approach. Changing plans early is safer than making a sudden maneuver near trucks.
What a blank city listing means
The city page is intentionally incomplete by design. It omits partial closures, emergencies, non-major roads, closures under TxDOT or other jurisdictions and closures that have not been reported. Therefore, an empty or unchanged table does not establish that all roads near Gigafactory Texas are clear. Use it as one input in a broader check.

Account for the Harold Green Road and Tesla Road project without assuming a live closure
A Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation record, project TABS2025011400, documents a project to widen Harold Green Road and design a driveway connection to Tesla Road. The record lists a projected completion date of December 31, 2026. That date is a project target in the state record; it is not a live construction-status update and does not prove that work, lane restrictions or a closure is occurring on the day you travel.

Use the record to identify a location where plans may change, then verify the current traffic control through the responsible road authority. If you are visiting the plant, ask your host or the facility contact which entrance is open and whether delivery or visitor traffic has been redirected. If you are a resident, watch for temporary signs and follow the posted detour rather than relying on an older map route.
Why work-zone plans matter
Austin requires traffic-control plans for work in the public right of way. The city says, “A TCP describes traffic controls to help all traffic modes through a work zone.” The plan can govern lane shifts, channelization, signs, pedestrian movement and other controls, and it must follow current state and city guidance. Read the signs at the site even if a navigation device proposes a different movement.

Trip plans for different travelers
Visitors going to the facility
- Confirm the exact entrance, appointment time and visitor instructions before you leave. A destination pin for the general factory area may not identify the entrance you are permitted to use.
- Check I-35, SH 130 and local closure information close to departure. Add time for finding the correct gate and for a possible controlled entrance, rather than assuming arrival at the property line equals arrival at your appointment.
- Keep identification, appointment details and the host’s contact information accessible so you do not have to stop in a travel lane or make an abrupt turn.
- If a sign or attendant directs you away from the mapped route, follow the facility’s current instruction and update your navigation only when safely stopped.
Employees and contractors
- Ask your employer which entrance is active for your shift and whether a construction detour is in effect. The TDLR project record alone cannot answer that operational question.
- Compare the cost and route fit of I-35 and SH 130 for your regular commute, but recheck conditions on days with a reported closure or incident.
- Leave a buffer for the final local approach. A highway may be moving normally while access near the plant is controlled or narrowed.
- When carrying tools or equipment, plan a legal place to pull over before changing the route; do not stop on a shoulder simply to study a map.
Through drivers who do not need the facility
- Put the facility outside your route when practical. If your trip is between points that can be connected without the Tesla-area approaches, that can remove one source of local interaction with delivery traffic.
- Compare I-35 and SH 130 using current delays, closure status, toll cost and the number of local connections required after leaving the highway.
- Do not divert onto residential streets solely to avoid a highway queue. A local shortcut can be unsuitable for a large vehicle and may conflict with posted restrictions or work zones.
Nearby residents
- Use official closure information and local signs for the streets you actually need; the city’s major-road list will not describe every neighborhood restriction.
- Expect work-zone layouts to change as a project advances. A route that worked last week may be redirected even if the TDLR project’s completion date has not changed.
- When meeting or passing trucks, maintain a predictable lane position, leave extra following distance and avoid lingering beside a truck where its driver may have limited visibility.
How to build flexibility without guessing truck hours
Because no source establishes a dependable truck peak near the factory, use uncertainty management instead of a time-of-day rule. Set a realistic latest-arrival time, then choose a departure window that leaves room for a closure or a slower final approach. The size of that buffer depends on how costly a late arrival is, whether you can take SH 130, and how much of the trip is on local roads.
For a high-consequence appointment, make the fallback decision before starting. For a flexible personal trip, you may prefer to wait for a later verified departure condition rather than pay a toll. Neither choice requires assuming that trucks are always heavier in the morning, afternoon or overnight.

Use live navigation as a supplement
A navigation service can show an incident or delay that develops after you check an official closure page, but it may not show every work-zone restriction or distinguish a facility driveway issue from a public-road closure. Use it to compare current travel estimates, then confirm unusual detours with signs and the responsible authority. Do not follow an app through a barricade, a signed truck restriction or a road closed by a flagger.
Contingency decisions when conditions change
If I-35 is delayed
Check whether the delay affects the segment you must use or only a distant part of the corridor. If your endpoints align with SH 130, compare the current estimate, toll and additional connections before switching. Enter the route while safely stopped, not while moving through traffic.
If SH 130 is delayed or the toll is not worthwhile
Remain on I-35 if its current conditions and your endpoints make it the better fit. A historical statement about unused capacity on southern SH 130 segments does not override a current incident or a trip whose destination is poorly served by that route.
If Harold Green Road or Tesla Road is restricted
Follow the posted detour and contact the facility, employer or host for the currently authorized entrance. Do not infer that the TDLR project’s December 31, 2026 projected completion date means a restriction will last until that date or that all work is finished before then.
If a closure is not listed
Treat the road as potentially affected if signs, traffic control or emergency personnel indicate a restriction. The city’s list does not include every closure type, and roads outside city jurisdiction require separate checks.
Truck-safety practices on the approach
- Leave more following distance than you would in light traffic so a truck’s slower braking or a sudden queue does not force an emergency stop.
- Avoid cutting in immediately ahead of a truck, especially where lanes narrow or traffic-control devices shift.
- Pass decisively and maintain a predictable speed; do not remain alongside a truck longer than necessary.
- Expect a truck to need extra space when turning into a driveway or navigating a work-zone channel. Never pass around a stopped truck if signs or a flagger prohibit it.
- Keep intersections and driveways clear. Blocking an entrance can delay trucks, emergency vehicles and ordinary traffic at the same time.
- At night or in rain, increase your margin further and rely on illuminated signs and flagger instructions rather than a remembered daytime path.
A departure checklist
- Confirm the exact destination entrance and appointment or shift requirements.
- Check the City of Austin Right-of-Way Street Closures page.
- Check TxDOT or the relevant authority for I-35, SH 130 and other non-city roads on your route.
- Review current navigation conditions, looking for incidents, partial restrictions and changed travel times.
- Compare I-35 and SH 130 by endpoint fit, current conditions, toll cost and final approach—not by a presumed truck schedule.
- Allow time for the Harold Green Road and Tesla Road project area to have a changed traffic-control layout, while remembering that the TDLR completion date is only projected.
- Save one fallback route and decide where you can safely pull over if plans change.
- Recheck immediately before departure and obey every current sign, barricade, flagger and facility instruction.
Bottom line
Plan for variability, not a mythical truck timetable. Use the city closure list for its major-road coverage, check state and other-agency roads separately, and compare I-35 with toll SH 130 only after considering your endpoints and current conditions. The Harold Green Road project record is a reason to verify the local approach—not proof of a closure. With a confirmed entrance, a preselected fallback and a final conditions check, you can reduce surprises without relying on unsupported claims about truck peaks or guaranteed time savings.
