Tesla estimates up to 500 miles of range with a fully loaded trailer and says Megachargers can deliver up to 1.2 MW, recovering up to 60% of range in 30 minutes. Those are manufacturer estimates, not independent route-test results, so a workable plan needs operating margin and a contingency.

What to verify before you leave
A reliable Semi route plan answers six questions for every planned stop:
- Is the site open now, and will it be open during your arrival window?
- How many Megacharger stalls are available, and is that availability live?
- What is the current price, and does it vary by time of day?
- Can your tractor and trailer enter, back into the stall and exit without an unsafe maneuver?
- How much energy do you actually need to reach the next stop or destination?
- What will you do if every stall is occupied or the site is temporarily unavailable?
The Semi touchscreen map and Tesla app are Tesla’s specified sources for the site address, distance, available Megacharger stalls, limited hours, access directions and current price. Open the individual location rather than relying on a broad network image: live operating information can change after a route is planned.

Build the first route in Trip Planner
- Enter the destination in the Semi. Open the truck’s navigation and enter the final destination, then let Trip Planner calculate the route. Tesla says the Semi automatically adds charging stops along the way.
- Review the proposed stop sequence. Check whether each stop fits your loading schedule, legally required breaks, driver shift and expected arrival time. A mathematically shortest route is not automatically the best fleet route.
- Check the energy margin between stops. Compare the displayed arrival estimate with the charge you need for traffic, weather, hills, payload and detours. Do not plan to arrive with only the minimum predicted battery percentage.
- Open every Megacharger pin. Tesla identifies Megachargers with gray map pins. Tap each pin to view its address, distance and available Megacharger stalls.
- Record the practical details. Save the site address, current availability, price, hours and any access notes in the dispatch record. Recheck them close to departure because these details are volatile.
Tesla Support says, “We recommend using Trip Planner to estimate how much charge you’ll need to reach your destination.” Use that estimate as the baseline, then add the operating margin required by your fleet’s safety policy.
Read a Megacharger map pin correctly
Gray Megacharger pin
The gray Megacharger pin is the location you need to inspect for Semi charging. Tapping it exposes the address, distance and available Megacharger stall count. Availability is a live condition, not a promise that a stall will remain free when you arrive.
Red site pin
The associated red site pin may contain directions to the stalls, gate codes or other access instructions. A driver should review these notes before reaching the property, especially at a depot, industrial park or gated facility.

Hours and price
Most Megacharger stations are open for charging 24 hours, but Tesla displays limited hours on the site map when they apply. Pricing varies by location and can fluctuate during the day; Tesla says the map shows current pricing and that the price is set once the truck is plugged in. Use the amount shown for the specific site and arrival period rather than an old fleet estimate.
Choose stops using an operational scorecard
When two possible stops can serve the route, compare them in this order:

Keep the selected stop only when it satisfies the route’s energy requirement and the driver can physically use it with the trailer attached. Do not substitute a passenger-vehicle charger simply because it is closer.
Estimate charging time without overpromising
Megacharger performance
Tesla lists Megacharger power of up to 1.2 MW and says a Semi can recover up to 60% of its range in 30 minutes. The word “up to” is important: Tesla states that the actual rate depends on battery level, battery temperature and whether another truck is charging at the same Megacharger. Charging also slows above 90% state of charge.

For dispatch, schedule the energy needed for the next leg rather than automatically charging to 100%. The truck’s Trip Planner estimate should determine the target, while the driver or dispatcher adds a margin for conditions that the estimate cannot perfectly predict. A stop that appears to require 20 minutes can take longer if the battery is cold, the truck arrives at a high state of charge or another vehicle shares the power equipment.
Manufacturer range estimate
Tesla’s US Semi page estimates up to 500 miles on a single charge with a fully loaded trailer. Tesla does not present that number as a guarantee for a particular route. Payload, speed, wind, temperature, grade, traffic, tire condition and auxiliary loads can all change consumption. No independent route test or third-party measured Semi range figure is established here, so use the estimate as a planning reference rather than a certified operating distance.
Depot charging is a different use case
Tesla lists Basecharger power of 120 kW and up to 60% of range in four hours. That is depot or long-stop charging context, not a replacement for a public-route Megacharger plan. A route that depends on a fast public stop should be planned around Megacharger-compatible locations shown in the live map.
Confirm trailer access before arrival
Tesla says every Megacharger site allows the Semi to charge while a trailer remains attached, but most locations require the driver to back into the stall. The map’s access information and a physical review of the approach are therefore part of route planning, not optional driver preference.

- Check whether the turn into the property is practical for the tractor-trailer combination.
- Confirm that the exit path remains clear after charging.
- Brief the driver on any gate code, check-in process or site-specific instruction shown by the red site pin.
- Allow extra time for backing, coupling clearance and traffic inside the property.
Passenger Superchargers and Tesla Wall Connectors are not compatible with the Semi. Do not create a fallback plan that depends on either one, even if the vehicle’s navigation shows it nearby.
Understand reservations, billing and account requirements
No stall reservations
Tesla says Megacharger reservations are not supported. A dispatcher cannot lock in a stall for a future arrival, so the plan must tolerate a full site. Check live availability immediately before departure and again while the truck is en route when operationally safe.
Business-account billing
Tesla says Megacharging is billed to the owning Tesla for Business account and invoiced monthly. The Semi must be added to that account. Confirm the correct truck and account before the first trip; an account or vehicle setup problem can prevent a charge even when a stall is physically available.

Separate open locations from planned network expansion
Tesla’s January 28, 2026 investor update included a map titled “Tesla Semi – Megacharger Network Planned Sites for 2026.” A planned-site map shows intended expansion; it does not establish that a marked location is open, commissioned or available to your truck. Use it for broad network context, then verify the specific location in the current Semi touchscreen map or Tesla app.
Tesla’s Q1 2026 investor update said the company was deploying public Megachargers alongside the Semi ramp, including its first public Megacharger in Southern California. That announcement confirms deployment activity, not universal availability at every planned pin. Treat opening status, stall count, hours and price as location-specific and time-sensitive.
A practical dispatch workflow
- At planning time: Enter the destination and inspect every Trip Planner charging stop.
- At route approval: Open each map pin, record address, stall availability, hours, price and access instructions, and reject any stop that cannot accommodate the trailer maneuver.
- Before departure: Recheck live availability and confirm that the Semi is associated with the owning Tesla for Business account.
- During the trip: Monitor predicted arrival charge and consumption. If the estimate deteriorates, reduce speed where legal and safe, reassess the next stop and contact dispatch before the margin disappears.
- On approach: Follow the site directions, gate instructions and backing plan. Do not assume an arriving truck has a reserved stall.
- While charging: Charge to the Trip Planner target plus the fleet’s required margin. Expect the rate to vary and to taper above 90%.
- After departure: Confirm that the next-leg estimate remains viable and document unusual delays, blocked access or pricing for future planning.
Failure modes and recovery decisions
The displayed site is full
Because reservations are unavailable, a full site is a normal planning risk. Keep enough energy margin to reach the next viable Megacharger identified in the route plan. If no practical alternative exists, contact dispatch before committing to the detour; do not assume a passenger Supercharger or Wall Connector can solve the problem.
Hours do not cover the arrival
Choose a site whose displayed hours include the expected arrival and charging window. If a route depends on a limited-hours station, re-time the departure or select another stop before the truck leaves.
The charge rate is lower than expected
Check whether the battery is cold, the state of charge is already high or another truck is charging at the same Megacharger. Recalculate the departure time using the energy actually required for the next leg rather than the advertised maximum rate.

The trailer cannot be positioned safely
Stop the maneuver and follow the site’s access instructions. A location that is technically compatible but unsafe for the driver’s approach is not a usable route stop. Escalate to dispatch and select the next route-compatible option.
The site appears on a network plan but not as an active stop
Remove it from the live route. Planned network maps are not operating-status data; only the current vehicle or app locator can confirm the location’s address, availability, hours and price.

How to compare a public stop with depot charging
A public Megacharger and a Basecharger solve different scheduling problems. Megacharging is intended for a route stop where a truck needs a substantial energy increase during a workday; Tesla quotes up to 1.2 MW and up to 60% of range in 30 minutes. Basecharging is slower, with Tesla listing 120 kW and up to 60% of range in four hours, making it suitable for a depot or extended dwell. Do not replace a missing public stop with an assumed depot session unless the truck will actually return to a compatible facility for that long dwell.
Likewise, compare stops on total trip time rather than charger power alone. Include the approach, backing maneuver, gate process, possible queue, charging session and exit. A slightly slower site with more available stalls and a shorter detour may produce a more reliable arrival than the closest high-power pin.

What the price information means for a fleet
Tesla does not provide one universal Megacharger rate in the cited guidance. The map shows the current price for each site, prices can change during the day, and Tesla says the price is set once the truck is plugged in. Dispatch records should therefore capture the site and the time checked, not just a generic per-mile assumption. Billing goes to the owning Tesla for Business account and is invoiced monthly, so fleet cost reviews should reconcile those invoices with the route and vehicle records.
Do not promise a driver or customer a fixed charging cost based on an old screenshot, a different site or a planned network pin. The live map is the appropriate cost reference for the specific stop.
North American figures and regional caution
The 500-mile estimate, 1.2 MW Megacharger figure, 60%-in-30-minutes claim and 120 kW Basecharger specification cited here come from Tesla’s US materials. Tesla’s UK page presents different region-specific estimated specifications and 2027 delivery wording. Do not mix those figures into a US route plan or assume that a specification from one market applies unchanged in another.

- Every suggested stop opened and reviewed.
- Live stall availability checked.
- Displayed hours cover the arrival window.
- Current site price recorded.
