How to Plan a Long Trip in an Electric Pickup Truck

A practical guide to planning long electric-pickup journeys: define the truck and load, build a charging-aware route, adjust for towing and cold, verify connectors and adapters, budget realistic charging time, and keep a reachable backup.

Plan an electric-pickup road trip from the truck outward: record the exact model year, battery and trim, wheels and tires, payload, trailer, weather and route; then build a charging-aware itinerary that preserves an arrival reserve and a verified backup stop. A dashboard range number alone is not a trip plan. Vehicle configuration, drive mode, elevation, temperature and speed all change the usable estimate, and towing or cold weather may require manually reducing the range used by a planner.

Start with the truck and the trip you actually have

There is no single “electric pickup range” that applies to every journey. Before opening a route planner, write down the inputs that determine whether its estimate resembles your trip:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Exact make, model, model year, battery or pack option and trim.
  • Wheel and tire configuration, including any all-terrain or winter tires.
  • Current state of charge and the charge level you want when you arrive.
  • Passengers, cargo, roof equipment and other payload.
  • Trailer details: whether one is attached, its loaded weight, height, width and aerodynamic shape.
  • Origin, destination, planned intermediate stops and route alternatives.
  • Departure date and time, forecast temperature, wind, precipitation and likely traffic.
  • Major climbs, descents and elevation changes on the route.
  • Your charging connector, approved adapters, network accounts and payment method.

Rivian says its route estimate responds to vehicle configuration, selected drive mode, elevation, weather and driving speed. That is why the same truck can show different estimates on two apparently similar trips. ChargePoint’s route-planning guidance separately warns that its planner does not automatically detect towing or cold weather; those effects must be reflected by lowering the effective range you give the planner. Treat these as vehicle- and planner-specific instructions, not a universal rule for every electric pickup.

Build a charging-aware route before you leave

Use the truck’s planner when it models your vehicle

The built-in planner is usually the best starting point when it knows your exact vehicle and battery. In the Rivian R1T guide, entering a destination can add charging stops when needed, show recommended charge times and station details, and let you choose preferred charging networks and an arrival range. Requesting a higher arrival range can increase total travel time, but it can also make a remote leg less stressful.

Enter the destination and all realistic waypoints rather than planning each charger independently. The system can then account for elevation and speed along the route and recommend where charging belongs. If your truck’s software does not model a trailer or a particular battery configuration, use a third-party planner with the closest vehicle profile and then apply your own conservative adjustments.

Set a target arrival state of charge

Do not optimize for the fewest possible stops if doing so leaves the truck nearly empty. Set a target arrival state of charge (SoC) for the destination and for critical charging legs. ChargePoint gives 20–30% end-of-trip SoC as a reasonable example for most drivers; it is a planning suggestion, not a mandatory safety threshold. A remote route, severe weather, an unfamiliar trailer or sparse backup options may justify a larger reserve.

ChargePoint’s planner accepts current and target SoC inputs and can suggest stations. Its advanced routing features may not be available to every user, so confirm which controls your account and app version actually provide.

Compare routes by resilience, not stop count

A route with one fewer charging stop is not automatically faster or safer. Compare each candidate on these factors:

Decision factor What to verify
Vehicle accuracy Does the planner have your model year, battery, trim and wheel/tire setup?
Load modeling Can it represent a trailer and payload, or must you lower effective range manually?
Conditions Are temperature, elevation, wind, precipitation and speed reflected in the estimate?
Connector and network fit Is the plug physically compatible, and is your vehicle eligible to use that site?
Arrival-charge control Can you specify a desired arrival SoC instead of accepting the default?
Station information Does the map show charging speed, current availability and adapter requirements?
Stop editing Can you add, remove and reorder multiple stops?
Fallbacks Is another compatible charger reachable if the planned site is busy or offline?

Adjust the estimate for towing, payload and cold

Towing changes the trip more than a headline range suggests

A trailer adds mass and aerodynamic drag, and its effect depends on speed, grade, wind and trailer shape. The supplied ChargePoint guidance specifically says towing is not automatically detected by its planner. Enter a lower effective range or otherwise apply a conservative adjustment yourself, then recalculate every leg. Do not use one universal towing-percentage claim: the available evidence does not establish a number that applies across trucks and trailers.

Record the trailer’s loaded condition, not its empty specification. A tall enclosed trailer can behave very differently from a low utility trailer at the same weight. If you change the trailer, load or route after planning, run the itinerary again rather than carrying the old stop schedule forward.

Cold weather and a cold battery need extra margin

Low temperatures can reduce available energy and increase the time needed to charge. ChargePoint says its planner does not automatically account for cold weather, so reduce effective range manually when the forecast is cold. Recalculate if the forecast changes substantially, especially before a long, elevated or remote leg.

The Rivian R1T guide says the vehicle may heat or cool the battery while navigating to a charging stop to help facilitate faster charging. Begin navigation to the intended charger early enough for that conditioning to occur, and still allow for a longer session if the battery arrives cold.

Elevation, speed and drive mode matter without a trailer

Rivian identifies elevation, driving speed and selected drive mode as route-estimate inputs. Sustained high speed and long climbs can consume energy faster than a flat, moderate-speed segment. Use the route-aware estimate rather than subtracting a fixed amount from the dashboard headline range, and revisit the calculation when traffic, weather or the planned route changes.

Inspect every charging stop and choose a backup

Check the details that determine whether a stop is usable

For each proposed station, verify:

  • Connector type and whether your truck can use it directly.
  • Whether an adapter is required and whether that adapter is approved for your vehicle.
  • Advertised charging power and the vehicle’s ability to accept it.
  • Current availability, operating hours, access restrictions and payment method.
  • Physical access for a long-wheelbase pickup and trailer, including pull-through space where relevant.
  • Food, restrooms and safe parking if the stop doubles as a break.
  • Distance and reachable SoC to the next compatible site.

Rivian’s guide says its map can show station information, availability when supplied, charging speed and whether an adapter is needed. Its filters can hide sites that are incompatible with the vehicle. Use those tools, but treat availability as a momentary status rather than a guarantee; a stall can be occupied or unavailable when you arrive.

Plan a fallback before the leg becomes critical

Identify at least one alternate compatible station before a long gap, particularly when the primary site has few stalls or no nearby services. The backup should be reachable with the reserve you set, not merely visible on a map. Note its address, connector, network and expected arrival SoC in your trip notes. Recheck both locations in the vehicle or network app close to departure and during the journey because station status can change.

Understand model-year connector and adapter compatibility

Never assume that a connector label makes every station usable. Compatibility depends on the truck, model year, software eligibility, station hardware and any approved adapter.

Rivian example: 2026 and newer vehicles

Rivian’s charging information says its 2026-and-newer vehicles have a built-in NACS port. Those vehicles do not need a separate DC adapter for a compatible NACS site, but the station still must be eligible for that vehicle.

Rivian example: 2022–2025 vehicles

Rivian says 2022–2025 vehicles can use a Rivian-approved NACS DC adapter at eligible Tesla Superchargers. It also cautions that not all NACS stations work with Rivian and that adapter use depends on the specific vehicle. Confirm your exact model year, the approved adapter, station eligibility and any software requirement before making such a site your only option.

This Rivian example should not be generalized to another electric pickup. For a different truck, consult that manufacturer’s compatibility list and the charging network’s current vehicle-eligibility information. Confirm that the required account, app, payment method and idle-fee policy are ready before departure.

Budget charging time realistically

Use stop-level estimates, not a peak-rate promise

Charging speed varies with the truck, battery state, battery temperature, charger, electrical conditions and site sharing. Rivian advertises up to 150 miles in 20 minutes in its charging information and publishes a maximum of 300 kW for its network. These are manufacturer figures and “up to” claims, not a promise for every vehicle or session. A truck arriving with a high SoC or a cold battery can take longer, and the station may not deliver its maximum output.

Use the route planner’s recommended charge time for the actual stop. Add practical time for parking, connecting, authentication, moving the truck or trailer, queues, restroom and food breaks, and a possible switch to the fallback station. If the next leg is short, leaving earlier at a moderate SoC may be more efficient than waiting for a high SoC. Charge higher only when the next leg, reserve or station spacing justifies it.

Account for trailer access and queues

A trailer may prevent you from fitting into a normal pull-in stall or require unhitching before charging. Check the site layout in advance and allow time to reposition safely. On busy travel days, a nominally fast charger can still produce a long stop if every stall is occupied. A slower but reliable station with usable access may beat a faster site that is difficult to enter or lacks a backup.

Follow a repeatable departure and driving routine

  1. Finish home charging. If home charging is available, charge to the level required for the first leg and verify that the session completed. Check the truck’s displayed SoC and the planner’s estimated arrival SoC before leaving.
  2. Confirm the live route. Review weather, traffic, station status and any road closures. Recalculate if the route, trailer, payload or forecast changed.
  3. Carry the compatibility information. Have the approved adapter, charging-network accounts and payment method available. Keep the primary and backup station details accessible offline or in a written note.
  4. Drive the first leg as planned. Watch actual consumption and estimated arrival SoC, not just the headline range. A falling estimate is a signal to slow down, reduce nonessential detours or select the backup earlier.
  5. At each stop, reassess. Check the next station’s live status and the truck’s projected arrival SoC. If the charger is busy or unavailable, leave enough reserve to reach the alternate.
  6. Leave when the next leg is covered. Stop charging when the next leg plus your chosen reserve is secured. Charging to a higher level is useful when the route has a long gap or limited alternatives, but it adds time.
  7. Update passengers. Share the planned stop, expected duration and fallback so food, restroom and trailer tasks do not delay departure.

Use a simple trip worksheet

Keep one row for every leg. This exposes weak links before departure and gives you a record to update on the road.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Leg Information to record
Origin to charger Distance, planned departure SoC, estimated arrival SoC, elevation and weather.
Primary charger Address, network, connector, power, live status, access notes and planned charge time.
Fallback charger Address, compatibility, reachable reserve and the condition that would trigger a switch.
Charger to next stop Distance, trailer or payload assumptions, target departure SoC and expected arrival SoC.
Destination Desired arrival SoC, overnight charging availability and the next departure requirement.

Troubleshoot the common failure modes

The truck’s estimate drops rapidly

Check speed, wind, temperature, elevation and payload against the assumptions used in the plan. If towing or cold weather was omitted, lower effective range in the planner and recalculate. Select the next compatible charger sooner rather than waiting for the reserve to disappear.

The planned station is unavailable

Open the live station information, confirm that the connector is usable and switch to the preselected fallback if the primary cannot serve the truck. Do not assume a nearby site is compatible merely because it appears on the map.

The charger is slower than expected

Allow for a high starting SoC, cold battery, shared power or a site limitation. Follow the truck’s stop-level estimate, then charge only enough for the next leg and reserve unless the route requires more. If the delay threatens the next station’s closing time or your reserve, use the alternate station while you still can reach it.

An adapter does not work

Stop and verify the exact vehicle model year, adapter approval, connector orientation, station eligibility and account authorization. Do not force a connection or substitute a generic adapter without manufacturer confirmation. If the site is not eligible, use the compatible fallback in your itinerary.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The trailer cannot fit the charging stall

Look for a pull-through location or a site where unhitching is safe and permitted. If neither is available, select a different compatible station and include the trailer maneuver in your time estimate. A charger that works for a passenger car may be impractical for a long pickup and trailer.

What a well-planned electric-pickup trip looks like

A robust itinerary names the truck and its configuration, starts with the current SoC, models payload and trailer conditions, uses weather- and elevation-aware estimates, sets an explicit arrival reserve, and lists a verified compatible backup for every important gap. It also distinguishes manufacturer charging claims from the time you should actually budget and confirms model-year adapter eligibility before departure.

For an exact schedule, the missing variables are decisive: truck and year, battery and tires, route and country, trailer and load, temperatures and travel dates. Enter those details into the vehicle’s current planner, verify station status shortly before each leg, and revise the route whenever the real conditions stop matching the assumptions.
