Plan the trip around your exact car, not its brochure range: enter the model, departure charge, destination and likely conditions into a vehicle-aware route planner, schedule compatible charging stops with a reserve, and check live status before leaving. Keep a fallback charger available where the route allows. A small electric car can handle a long journey reliably when the plan reflects battery temperature, speed, weather, passengers, luggage and the car’s actual charging capability.
What counts as a long journey in an electric car?
For the Department for Transport’s England-focused research, a long-distance journey means 100 miles or more in one direction on the strategic road network (SRN), where a driver may need to stop and charge. That definition covers England’s motorways and major A-roads; it is not a universal definition for every UK road or an international trip.

The practical challenge is not simply distance. You must arrive at a usable charger with enough battery to cope with a closed site, a queue, a detour or a planner estimate that proves optimistic. Small electric cars vary substantially in battery capacity, efficiency, connector type, charging power and whether they support DC rapid charging, so two cars with similar advertised ranges can require very different itineraries.
Why planning matters to driver confidence
An Ipsos survey for the Department for Transport, published on 25 September 2025, asked battery-electric-vehicle (BEV) drivers about journeys of at least 100 miles on England’s motorways and major A-roads. The results describe that surveyed group and geography only, but they show which uncertainties matter most:
#1 Best Overall
- Accurate, Dependable Readings: Factory‑calibrated to ±1 PSI, so you can confidently match your vehicle’s recommended PSI (check the door jamb sticker). Ideal for monthly checks and road trips — consistent results every time, cold or warm.
- Bright Backlit Display & Nozzle Light: The illuminated nozzle helps you find the valve stem in the dark, while the backlit LCD makes readings crystal clear in dim garages or at night. No more squinting or holding a flashlight.
- 4 Measurement Units, One Button: Quickly switch among PSI, Bar, Kgf/cm², and KPA with a single press. No complex settings — just press and cycle to your preferred unit. Perfect for drivers who need multiple scales.
- Broad Compatibility for Everyday Vehicles: 0–150 PSI covers cars, SUVs, motorcycles, and spare tires (often 60 PSI). Fits standard Schrader valves; just press on for a reading.
- Auto‑Off to Extend Battery Life: The gauge automatically powers down after 30 seconds of inactivity, so the included 2*AAA batteries last longer. Always ready for your monthly checks without surprise dead batteries.
| Factor selected by respondents | Share of surveyed BEV drivers |
|---|---|
| Availability of rapid or ultra-rapid chargers | 72% |
| Vehicle range | 59% |
| Route planning with charging stops | 52% |
| Rapid or ultra-rapid availability as the single most important factor | 42% |
In the same survey, 46% reported making an SRN journey that included an en-route charge for leisure, including visiting friends or family, and 35% reported doing so for a UK holiday. The figures do not establish one ideal route or stop interval. They indicate why a dependable plan should cover range, charging availability and the route between them.
1. Start with the exact car
Record the details that change the route
Before opening a map, note the exact model and variant, battery size if known, current battery condition, expected departure state of charge, connector type and whether the car supports DC rapid charging. Many battery-electric cars accept DC rapid charging, but some second-hand BEVs do not. Never assume that a small car has rapid charging simply because it is fully electric.
- Model and variant: trim levels can have different batteries, wheels and charging hardware.
- Departure charge: use the percentage you will actually have when leaving, not a theoretical 100% unless you can charge to that level.
- Charging capability: check the handbook or manufacturer specification for AC and DC limits, connector and any battery-preconditioning requirement.
- Known battery condition: an older or heavily used battery may deliver less usable energy than its original specification.
Use a vehicle-aware route planner whenever possible. Its output is only as good as the selected model and its assumptions. For example, one manufacturer’s route simulator estimates from a 100% departure charge, maintains a minimum 15% during the journey and 10% on arrival, and assumes a constant 15°C while factoring charging time, topography and average speed. Those are that simulator’s settings, not universal recommendations or an independent test. Check and change the planner’s departure charge, reserve, weather, speed and terrain assumptions before accepting its itinerary.

Why the published number is only a starting point
Stated range varies with the car, weather, route and driving. The Motability Scheme suggests knocking about 20% off a stated range as a rough rule of thumb. Treat that as an approximation from that guidance, not a guaranteed correction for every small EV. Your car’s own consumption history and a model-specific planner are more useful for the final decision.

Energy use can rise with motorway speed, hills, cold temperatures, cabin heating, passengers, luggage and poor tyre condition. These are variables rather than fixed penalties: their effect depends on the vehicle, route and conditions. Do not turn a single published range into a promise that the car will cover a particular motorway distance.
Build in a reserve
Set a minimum arrival state of charge that leaves room for a missed turn, a queue, a diversion or a charger that is unavailable. The right reserve depends on the route, weather, charging density and your tolerance for risk. A remote rural road with few alternatives calls for more margin than a corridor with several compatible sites. A planner’s minimum percentage is an assumption to review, not a guarantee that every driver should copy.
3. Map charging stops before you set off
Enter the entire journey
- Enter your exact car, destination and realistic departure charge in a vehicle-aware route planner.
- Review every proposed charging stop and confirm that its connector and charging mode match your car.
- Check the estimated arrival battery percentage, charging duration and departure percentage at each stop.
- Look at the route between stops for hills, high-speed motorway sections, exposed roads and places where a detour would be difficult.
- Identify at least one practical alternative charger for each section where another usable site exists.
- Near departure, check the operator or route-planner information for current status, access, payment method, opening arrangements and any location-specific restrictions.
Do not plan to arrive at exactly 0% or treat the planner’s arrival percentage as a reserve that cannot change. Estimates rely on assumptions about speed, temperature, traffic, elevation and energy consumption. A backup is practical risk management, not a formally mandated number of stops.

Understand rapid and ultra-rapid labels
National Highways classifies rapid chargers as 50–149 kW and ultra-rapid chargers as 150 kW or more. Its guide gives broad indicative rates of 90–250 miles in 30 minutes for rapid charging and 250-plus miles in 30 minutes for ultra-rapid charging. Those figures describe charger categories, not what your small car will receive.

| Charger category | National Highways power band | Indicative guidance | What determines your actual result |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rapid | 50–149 kW | 90–250 miles in 30 minutes | Vehicle’s DC limit, battery state and temperature, ambient conditions and the individual charger |
| Ultra-rapid | 150 kW or more | 250+ miles in 30 minutes | The same factors; a small car may accept far less than the site’s maximum |
A charger’s rating is therefore not a promise of a particular charging rate. Charging normally slows as the battery fills, and the car may limit power when the battery is cold or near full. A short stop at a high-power site can be efficient if your car can accept that power, but a lower-power charger may be the sensible choice when it is compatible, reliable and located where you already need a break.
4. Compare possible stops and routes
When a planner offers several choices, compare the options on the factors that affect the whole journey rather than choosing the highest kW number alone.
| Comparison point | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Compatibility | Does the site have the connector and charging mode your car supports? Is the unit accessible to your vehicle’s cable position? |
| Expected time | What does the vehicle-specific charging curve suggest, including the time to leave with your chosen reserve? |
| Reliability and fallback | Is current status information available, and is another compatible site reachable if the first is busy or offline? |
| Detour and amenities | How far is the charger from the route, and does it provide a safe, practical break, toilets or food? |
| Conditions and margin | What weather, terrain, speed, load and arrival battery percentage does the option assume? |
A slightly slower charger directly on the route may beat a faster unit that requires a long detour or leaves no backup. Conversely, a site with many stalls and a second nearby option may be preferable to a nominally convenient location with no alternative.

Cold weather
Temperature can affect both range and charging time. Energy Saving Trust guidance recommends adjusting route plans in colder periods, pre-heating the cabin while the car is connected to a chargepoint and charging when the battery is warm to improve the charging rate. A result cited on that page from an American Automobile Association study reported a range reduction of up to 41% at −6°C with the heating switched on. The page does not state the study year, and the result is a specific third-party finding rather than a forecast for every vehicle, so do not use it as a universal winter adjustment.

In cold weather, leave more margin, allow for a longer charging stop and check the forecast along the route rather than only at home. If your car offers battery pre-conditioning, follow its instructions and allow the system time to operate before arriving at a rapid charger.
Speed and motorway driving
Motability Scheme guidance says driving at 70 mph reduces range compared with 50 mph. This is a directional effect, not advice to drive below the limit regardless of conditions. Obey speed limits and drive safely; account for motorway consumption by using the vehicle planner’s speed setting and retaining a reserve.
Passengers, luggage and tyres
More weight and under-inflated tyres can increase energy use. Check tyre pressures when the tyres are cold and use the values on the car’s placard or in its handbook, not a generic number. Under-inflated tyres create additional rolling resistance. Carry only what the journey requires, while keeping safety equipment and legally required items.

- Charge to the departure level used by your route plan and confirm the car shows the expected percentage.
- Check tyre pressures cold, inspect for visible damage and make sure the pressure-monitoring system has no warning.
- Confirm that the charging cable, connector adapters permitted for your car and any access cards or payment methods are with you.
- Install route-planner and charging-network updates if your car requires them, and save the route or stop details for areas with weak mobile coverage.
- Remove unnecessary luggage and secure the remaining load.
- Set the cabin temperature sensibly and use connected pre-heating in cold conditions where available.
- Tell everyone in the car where the planned breaks are, while keeping the ability to stop earlier if conditions change.
A digital tyre-pressure gauge can make the check easier, but it does not create a quantified range improvement. The relevant target is the vehicle manufacturer’s recommended pressure.

7. Make charging stops work for the people travelling
Use charging time for a sensible break rather than treating every stop as a race to reach a target percentage. If the next leg is short, leaving before 100% can save time because charging often slows at high state of charge. If the next compatible charger is far away or the weather is deteriorating, a longer stop may provide useful resilience.
Check access and payment before arrival. Some sites require an app, contactless payment, an account or a membership card; some have opening or parking rules. Live status can change between planning and arrival, so re-check shortly before departure and, when practical, before committing to a long leg. Keep the alternative site’s location and access method available rather than relying on memory.
8. What to do when the plan starts to fail
The predicted arrival percentage is falling
- Reduce unnecessary speed while remaining within the limit and driving safely.
- Use efficient cabin settings and postpone non-essential heating or cooling where comfortable and safe.
- Stop at the next compatible charger rather than trying to reach the original site with no margin.
- Use the planner again with the current battery percentage and conditions.
The planned charger is occupied or unavailable
Check the alternative identified before departure. If none is reachable with your current reserve, choose the nearest compatible site rather than the fastest-rated one. Avoid entering a long leg based on a charger that has not confirmed availability when another practical option exists.
The car is charging slowly
Confirm that the car is using the expected charging mode and that the connector is fully latched. Slow charging can result from a cold battery, a high state of charge, ambient temperature, the vehicle’s own power limit or a site problem. Allow extra time, lower the target percentage if the next leg permits it, or move to a compatible alternative if the unit is clearly malfunctioning.
You arrive with less reserve than expected
Do not repeat the same assumptions on the return journey. Record the actual consumption, weather, speed and load, then revise the planner’s settings and increase the reserve for the next leg.
9. A repeatable planning checklist
- Identify the car: exact variant, battery, connector, AC/DC capability and known battery condition.
- Set the real start point: destination, departure charge, passengers, luggage, weather and route type.
- Choose a reserve: increase it for cold weather, high speeds, hills, sparse charging and uncertain conditions.
- Plan compatible stops: review arrival and departure percentages, charging time and detours.
- Prepare backups: save at least one reachable alternative where infrastructure permits.
- Verify close to travel: status, access, payment, opening arrangements and any route disruption.
- Check the car: tyre pressure, cable, charge level, luggage and cabin pre-conditioning.
- Re-plan during the journey: use actual consumption and live conditions, not the original estimate alone.
How far ahead should you plan?
Do the route and reserve calculation before the day of travel, especially for a first long trip in an unfamiliar small EV. Re-check live charger information near departure because status, access rules and payment requirements are volatile. Weather and traffic can justify another adjustment at the first stop. Prices, charger availability and route-planner features change, so information seen weeks earlier should not be treated as confirmation for the day.
The practical answer
A long journey in a small electric car is dependable when you plan energy rather than distance alone. Use the exact vehicle and real departure charge, treat stated range and charger power as estimates, leave a reserve, and keep a compatible fallback. Give extra margin to cold weather, motorway speeds, hills, passengers, luggage and tyres, then verify live charger information immediately before setting off. That approach is more robust than promising a fixed motorway range or a universal charging time for every small EV.
