Send the edited route to the vehicle and keep checking it as traffic, weather, energy use and charger status change.
“BMW iX5” needs clarification before you plan a plug-in charging route. BMW’s iX5 Hydrogen is a fuel-cell concept that refuels with hydrogen; it is not a battery-electric SUV that follows the iX3’s DC-charging workflow. The steps below therefore apply directly to a battery-electric iX3. A future or market-specific vehicle called iX5 would need its own confirmed charging specifications.

First, identify the vehicle you are planning for
Battery-electric BMW iX3
The iX3 uses a high-voltage battery and can be routed to public AC or DC charging stations. BMW’s navigation and app can calculate charging stops as part of a trip rather than leaving you to search manually for every station.

BMW’s June 15, 2023 explainer describes the iX5 Hydrogen as a concept vehicle powered by a fuel cell. It stores hydrogen and refuels at a hydrogen station; it does not plug into a DC fast charger like a battery-electric iX3. BMW described that vehicle as not available to purchase in that explainer. Do not use an iX3 charging plan for it.

Do not transfer new-iX3 figures to an older model
BMW’s 2025 announcement for the new iX3 gives a preliminary “up to 400 miles” range estimate, based on BMW AG testing using EPA test-procedure standards, and a 400 kW peak charging rate. Those are announced figures for that vehicle and are not guaranteed real-world performance. They should not be applied to earlier iX3 model years.
BMW’s two route-planning tools
Both BMW Maps in the vehicle and the My BMW App can build a route with charging stops. Their controls and exact availability depend on vehicle equipment, software, country and model year, so use the labels shown for your car and market.

BMW describes its route calculation as a current estimate. Station status, prices, traffic, road conditions, weather and your actual consumption can change after the route is calculated.
Plan the trip before departure
1. Enter the destination
- Open BMW Maps in the iX3 or open the trip-planning function in the My BMW App.
- Enter the final destination and check the proposed route, total distance and estimated arrival time.
- Review every suggested charging stop rather than accepting the first plan automatically. The planner considers traffic, station availability, charging power and estimated charging time, but those inputs are not fixed.
If you are using the app, allow enough time for the route to synchronize. After sending it, check the vehicle’s navigation screen; the in-car route is the version that will guide you and, where supported, control battery preconditioning.
2. Choose an arrival-charge reserve
Set the minimum state of charge you want on arrival at each station and at the destination. A low target can produce fewer stops, while a larger reserve gives you more protection if a charger is occupied, offline or difficult to reach.

- Use a larger reserve when the destination has little or no charging, the next station is far away, temperatures are low, terrain is mountainous, or you are unfamiliar with the area.
- Use a smaller reserve only when the route has several credible alternatives and you are comfortable adding a stop if conditions change.
- Set the destination reserve deliberately. Arriving with enough energy to reach a backup station or your overnight charger can matter more than shaving a few minutes from the final stop.
The correct number is personal and route-dependent. BMW’s settings let you express that preference; they do not make the reserve a guarantee if consumption changes sharply.
3. Set provider preferences and review payment fit
Where BMW Maps or the My BMW App provides provider preferences, select the operators or tariffs that work with your account, payment method and vehicle. A station that appears in the route planner may still require a separate app, contactless payment, membership or a different roaming arrangement.

Prices and tariff details can change. Confirm the current cost and payment method in the station’s listing or operator information before committing to a long detour.
How to inspect each proposed charging stop
Open the details for every stop and evaluate the complete trade-off, not just the headline charging speed.

Replace a stop when its detour, status, price, amenities or arrival reserve is unacceptable. An alternative with slightly lower power may be the faster overall choice if it is on-route and immediately usable.

Choose a charging target instead of defaulting to 100%
For the battery-electric iX3, BMW says repeated stops charging to around 80% can be quicker overall than one long stop to 100%, because charging slows at higher battery levels. Treat that as general trip-planning guidance, not a rule for every journey. A 100% charge can make sense before a remote section, when the next reliable station is far away, or when you are stopping for a long break anyway.

- Stop earlier when the next station is convenient and a shorter session keeps you in the faster part of the charging curve.
- Stay longer when the next charging opportunity is uncertain or the extra reserve prevents an additional detour.
- Do not confuse a station’s peak rating with constant power. Charging power normally varies during the session, and the car, battery temperature, state of charge and station can all limit it.
BMW’s published iX3 charging examples
In a BMW Group long-distance-travel article dated August 10, 2026, BMW gives an example of an iX3 charging from 10% to 80% in about 21 minutes. That is a manufacturer-stated example, not a universal stop duration. The same article reports approximately 1.1 million BMW Group Charging points in Europe; that company-reported count can change and does not mean every point is available on your route.
Use navigation-triggered battery preconditioning
BMW says that, in supported configurations, planning a DC charging stop with the vehicle’s navigation can precondition the battery on approach. Preconditioning brings the battery toward a temperature that can support faster DC charging. The exact behavior depends on the vehicle, software, market and station type.
- Include the intended DC station in BMW Maps.
- Start route guidance to that station in the iX3’s own navigation.
- Keep the stop as the active destination while approaching it so the vehicle can apply its supported preconditioning logic.
- Verify the feature in your owner documentation or local BMW support information; do not assume every iX3 configuration has identical behavior.
The My BMW App is useful for planning, but sending a route is not the same as activating every in-car function. For a planned DC stop, confirm that the car is navigating to that stop.
Account for range uncertainty
Advertised range is a test result or estimate, not a promise for your particular trip. BMW identifies temperature, driving style, traffic, vehicle and wheel choice, and the charge level at the beginning of charging as factors that affect range. Wind, elevation, road surface, payload and cabin heating or cooling can also make the route estimate move as conditions develop.

Use the car’s projected arrival charge as a live planning signal. If it is falling faster than expected:
- Reduce speed within safe and legal limits, especially on high-speed sections.
- Use the vehicle’s efficient driving settings and moderate cabin temperature if comfortable.
- Accept an earlier compatible charger rather than gambling on the original stop.
- Increase the reserve for the remaining route after the next reliable charging opportunity.
These actions manage energy; they do not repair an unavailable connector. Keep a second station in mind whenever the route crosses a sparse-charging area.

Before departure and at each break, refresh the route and station information. BMW’s planner uses current data, but current data can change between calculation and arrival.
- Check traffic and road closures before leaving.
- Confirm the next station’s reported status and connector availability.
- Compare the projected arrival charge with your selected minimum.
- Look at updated charging time and price estimates.
- Replace the stop if a delay, weather change or energy shortfall removes your margin.
Do not wait until the battery is nearly empty to make this decision. A reserve gives you time to divert to a second station or reach a destination charger.
When the proposed stop is not the best stop
The fastest charger is off the route
Compare total journey time, including the detour and likely queue, with a slower station directly on the route. The higher nameplate power may not offset extra driving or waiting.

The station is unavailable
Remove it immediately, choose a station with live availability, and raise the next arrival reserve if the alternative is less certain. If the planner has not refreshed, close and reopen the stop details or recalculate the route before departing.
The estimated stop is too long
Check your arrival state of charge and target. A stop from a very low battery to 100% will generally take longer than a shorter session ending around 80%. You can also compare a second station farther along the route if it avoids a long detour.
The tariff does not work for you
Choose a provider compatible with your payment method or roaming plan. Verify whether the displayed price is an energy rate, a time-based fee, an idle fee or a combination; the applicable tariff can change by operator and location.
Weather or traffic has reduced the projected arrival charge
Recalculate with a higher reserve, add an intermediate stop or select an earlier charger. Treat the revised arrival estimate as the new planning baseline rather than relying on the original departure calculation.
What the 2025 new-iX3 announcement does—and does not—tell you
BMW’s PressClub USA announcement for the new iX3 lists up to 400 miles of preliminary range under BMW AG testing based on EPA test-procedure standards and a 400 kW peak charging rate. “Peak” means the highest stated rate under qualifying conditions, not a constant rate from 10% to 80% or from 80% to 100%.
Those figures are useful when identifying the announced model, but they do not determine your stop plan by themselves. Your route planner’s arrival-charge estimate, the actual station, battery temperature, traffic, weather and your selected reserve are more relevant to the decision at hand.
A practical pre-departure checklist
- Confirm that the vehicle is the battery-electric iX3 and note its model year and equipment.
- Enter the destination in BMW Maps or the My BMW App.
- Review every suggested stop and the route’s assumptions.
- Set minimum arrival charges for stations and destination.
- Choose provider preferences that match your payment and tariff needs.
- Check detour, power, live status, estimated dwell time and amenities.
- Keep at least one alternative station in mind for long or sparse routes.
- Send the edited app route to the vehicle and confirm it loaded.
- Use the car’s navigation to a planned DC stop when supported preconditioning matters.
- Refresh traffic, weather, projected arrival charge, station status and prices before each major leg.
Bottom line for an iX3 long trip
Let BMW Maps or the My BMW App create the first charging plan, then make it yours: set a realistic arrival reserve, inspect each station, prefer a reliable on-route stop over an impressive but inconvenient peak rating, and recalculate whenever live conditions change. Charging to around 80% at several convenient stops will often reduce total time, but a higher target is sensible when the next opportunity is uncertain. If you meant the iX5 Hydrogen concept, plan hydrogen refueling instead—the iX3’s plug-in charging workflow does not apply.
