You can photograph classic cars at a concours without disrupting the event by checking that event’s current rules, staying in areas open to your ticket or credential, and giving judges, media crews, and other visitors room to work and look. When a judging interaction is underway, wait or choose another angle; do not step into it for a photograph. Equipment rules differ by event, so confirm restrictions on tripods, drones, flash, and professional gear before you pack.
Start with the event’s rules, not a universal assumption
Concours photography policies vary. Some organizers welcome personal cameras while asking visitors to be considerate; others restrict certain equipment or access areas. A rule for one show does not establish what is allowed at another. Check the current official policy for the event and the specific ticket or credential you hold.

The page presents 2027 event details. | Being encouraged to photograph does not mean stepping into another visitor’s view or a media photographer’s working position is appropriate. |
| Arizona Concours d’Elegance | The media policy tells photographers not to block or interfere with judges examining a vehicle. Media credentials are for working media; the policy identifies a designated photography location and restricts garage access unless an official representative accompanies the photographer. The page concerns the January 2027 event. | Ordinary spectator photography and credentialed media access are different. A media credential does not imply unrestricted access to every working area. |
| Concours d’Elegance Singapore indoor experience | The 2026 FAQ permits casual photography but prohibits professional equipment and tripods. | Read the event’s own definitions and restrictions; do not infer that a camera or support allowed at an outdoor show is allowed indoors. |
Before leaving, look specifically for rules covering personal cameras, professional equipment, tripods or monopods, flash, drones, restricted areas, and photography on awards stages. If the wording is unclear, ask the organizer rather than testing the boundary on the show field.

Pay attention to the scope of the rule as well as the item named. A policy may refer to a show field, an indoor experience, a garage, or an awards area, and permission in one place does not necessarily carry into another. Likewise, a policy allowing personal photography does not by itself answer whether a tripod, flash, or professional setup is permitted. If a particular type of equipment matters to your plan, get a clear answer from the event before you arrive.
Event pages can also contain information from more than one edition. The Atlanta page includes 2026 rules alongside later 2027 schedule information; the Greenbrier page presents 2027 event details; Arizona’s media guidance concerns its January 2027 event; and the Singapore FAQ gives rules for its 2026 experience. Check the current page for the edition you are attending instead of relying on a saved schedule or an old post.
Plan where you can photograph
Decide what you want to capture, then make sure the place you plan to stand is open to your ticket or credential. A public viewing area, a designated media position, a garage, and an awards stage are not interchangeable. Follow signs and staff directions even if a better angle appears to be just beyond a barrier.

- Read the event’s current official policy. Check it shortly before the event, since schedules and operating details can change between editions.
- Match your access to your plan. Confirm whether your ticket or media credential covers the field, indoor displays, garages, or any stage area you intend to photograph.
- Check each equipment restriction. Look for rules about tripods, flash, drones, and professional equipment. Do not assume that a small or folded piece of gear is exempt unless the organizer says so.
- Pack for the allowed setup. If a tripod or professional camera equipment is not permitted, plan handheld photographs rather than expecting an exception at the entrance.
Thinking in terms of both location and equipment helps prevent a common mismatch: arriving with a plan for a particular working area or support that your admission does not allow. If you are unsure about a location, ask whether it is open to spectators before you head there. If you are unsure about an item, ask whether it is permitted rather than relying on what another event allowed.
For a spectator, the safest plan is to work from the public viewing area and make photographs from there. For a credentialed photographer, use the designated position and access instructions provided by that event. The distinction matters even when both people carry similar-looking cameras: access depends on the event’s permission, not on how professional the equipment appears.
Give judging and people priority on the field
A car under examination is a working space, not a photo opportunity to enter. Arizona’s media policy expressly says not to block or interfere with judges examining a vehicle. Atlanta and Greenbrier also ask photographers to respect media and other patrons. The practical consequence is straightforward: if a judge is inspecting a car, stay out of the interaction and wait for it to finish before moving closer for a photograph.
- Keep paths and viewing gaps open. Avoid stopping where people need to pass or where a group is already viewing a car.
- Do not cross into a judging or media position to improve your angle.
- If people are gathered around a vehicle, wait for a natural opening, photograph from your current position, or move on and return later.
- Keep your camera and body from intruding into someone else’s view. A quick photograph is still disruptive if it blocks the person behind you.
- Follow instructions from event staff, judges, and security promptly. Do not treat a momentary gap or an unattended barrier as permission to enter a restricted area.
Waiting is often better than trying to get a shot around an active inspection. If the car is not available for a clear photograph, there will usually be other cars and details to photograph elsewhere on the field.

It can be tempting to edge closer when an inspection seems almost finished, or to lean into a gap to make a photograph before someone else takes the spot. Resist that impulse. The policy is about not interfering with the judging, not merely avoiding a direct conversation with a judge. Remaining outside the working space and returning after the interaction has ended is the considerate choice.
The same principle applies to other visitors and working photographers. A viewing area may feel informal, but people behind you are also trying to see the cars. Avoid holding a position for a long sequence while others wait. Take the photographs you need from a permitted spot, then make room. Atlanta’s published wording is, “Please respect media and other patrons when photographing cars on display.” Greenbrier’s field policy uses the same courtesy request and says that video and still photography are encouraged. Encouragement to photograph is not permission to obstruct someone else.
Make the photograph from the space you have
When the ideal full-car view is blocked, work with the angle available rather than stepping into a restricted or crowded spot. A tighter frame can turn a partial view into a deliberate photograph: isolate a badge, wheel, grille, headlamp, hood ornament, or a section of bodywork. This is a composition technique, not an event rule; use it only from a place where you are allowed to stand.
For a full-car view
Look for a gap where the car is visible without blocking a route or another visitor. Take a moment to check the edges of the frame for people, signs, or barriers that distract from the vehicle. If the space is busy, take one or two frames and move aside rather than holding the position while others wait.
If the available view is not quite the clean image you wanted, consider whether you can improve it without changing your position: adjust the framing, wait for a person to pass, or return when the crowd shifts. Do not assume that getting the entire car in the frame justifies moving beyond a rope or into a judging position. A respectful partial view is preferable to an ideal view made by crossing a boundary.
For details
Use a closer framing to emphasize a distinctive feature when the car’s full outline is obscured. Details can also make a useful photograph when a crowd temporarily prevents a clean overall view. Do not lean over a rope, touch the car, or step into the display boundary to fill the frame.
A detail photograph is a practical alternative, not a reason to press into the crowd. You can work with visible features such as a badge, wheel, grille, headlamp, or hood ornament from the same permitted viewing area. If even a close detail would require crossing into a restricted space, choose another angle or come back later.

For a changing crowd
Observe the flow of visitors and choose a position that does not force people to walk around you. If a clear sightline opens briefly, take the photograph without turning that opening into a prolonged obstruction. When the viewing area is crowded, moving to another car and returning later is a better choice than pushing forward.
Keep the camera itself in mind as well as your feet. Raising it into another visitor’s view can block them even if you remain in the same place. If someone is already composing a photograph or watching a car, wait for them to finish or find a different position rather than reaching across their sightline.
Manage reflections without treating a filter as essential
Car glass and polished surfaces reflect the surroundings, so a reflection can obscure an interior or compete with a body line. A circular polarizing filter is an optional tool: Nikon says it can reduce, and in some cases remove, unwanted reflections and can increase color saturation. It will not eliminate every reflection, and it is not necessary to photograph a concours car.
A polarizer reduces light reaching the camera by about 1.5 to 2 f/stops, according to Nikon USA. That is a manufacturer-stated figure, not an independent test or a promise about image quality. In practice, the light loss matters in shaded areas or indoors, where you may need to accept a slower shutter speed or a higher ISO setting if your camera offers those controls. Use the filter when the reflection reduction is worth that trade-off; remove it when it is not.
- Check compatibility. Find the filter diameter printed on the lens or listed in its manual, then match the screw-on filter to that size. Do not guess based on the camera body. Nikon’s lens-filter guide explains where to check.
- Look through the camera as you rotate it. A polarizer’s effect depends on its rotation and the viewing angle. Turn the filter while watching the reflections, and stop when the image improves rather than assuming maximum polarization will always look best.
- Check the exposure after fitting it. Because the filter cuts light, verify that the image is not blurred or too dark, especially in lower light.
Nikon’s polarizing-filter overview describes the reflection and color effects as well as the light reduction. A filter is an accessory choice, not a substitute for choosing a suitable permitted position or waiting until a judging interaction is over.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf you are considering buying one, treat it as an optional lens accessory for reflection control rather than required concours gear. The relevant fit is the diameter of the lens you plan to use, not a universal filter size or camera-body specification. Nikon advises checking the marking on the lens or its manual. The filter’s stated light loss is also worth considering before purchase, particularly if you expect to photograph indoors or in shade. The event policies do not call for a particular camera body, lens, or filter.
Choose a low-disruption camera setup
The event policy determines what you may bring; the simplest setup that complies is often the easiest to use in a crowd. The cited event policies do not require a particular camera body or lens. Do not buy gear merely because you are attending a concours.

- Handheld camera: A camera you can carry and use without occupying additional space is practical in a busy viewing area, provided it complies with the event’s equipment rules.
- Phone camera: If your event allows personal photography, a phone may be enough for a quick general view or close detail. Confirm the policy rather than assuming phone cameras are exempt from restrictions.
- Tripod or other support: Check explicitly before packing. The Singapore indoor FAQ prohibits tripods, but that rule should not be generalized to other events.
- Flash and drones: Look for explicit restrictions. Atlanta and Greenbrier list drones among prohibited items; those examples do not establish a universal drone policy. No single flash rule can be inferred across all events.
- Professional equipment: Ask what the event means by the term and whether it applies to your planned setup. Singapore’s indoor experience prohibits professional equipment, while other events may define access and permitted gear differently.
Do not assume that a piece of equipment is acceptable just because you can carry it discreetly. An event may define professional equipment or supports in its own way; the Singapore FAQ, for example, prohibits both professional equipment and tripods for its indoor experience. If your preferred setup could fall under a restriction, clarify the definition before packing.
There is no universal camera purchase that solves the etiquette problem. A particular body or lens is not required by the policies cited here. Choose the setup that is allowed and that you can use without taking up extra room; if a support is not permitted, plan to make photographs handheld rather than expecting an exception. A suitable viewing position and patience matter more to avoiding disruption than a more elaborate kit.

Know what a media credential does—and does not—allow
Media access is not simply a better spectator ticket. Arizona’s published policy reserves media credentials for working media, identifies a designated photography location, and restricts garage access unless a photographer is accompanied by an official representative. Those conditions are specific to that event; they do not grant or describe access at other concours.
If you are working on assignment, apply through the event’s own credential process and follow its access instructions. If you are attending as a spectator, stay within the areas available to your ticket. In either case, do not interfere with judging or assume that a credential authorizes entry into a garage, stage area, or other restricted zone.
Arizona’s media guidance is a useful reminder that permission can have limits even after a credential is issued. Its policy says, “Do not block or interfere with judges while they are examining a vehicle.” It also identifies a designated photography location and says garage access is restricted unless the photographer is accompanied by an official representative. A spectator should not treat those media provisions as a route into the garage, and a working photographer should follow the stated conditions instead of assuming that all back-of-house areas are open.
For any event, check what the credential actually covers: the areas it permits, any designated position, and any conditions for access. If an area is not included, stay out of it. The event’s staff can clarify where to go; a good view from a restricted working space is still not an authorized view.

Quick on-field checklist
- Am I in an area open to my ticket or credential?
- Is a judge, staff member, or media photographer working with this car?
- Can people pass and view the car without walking around me?
- Can I get the picture from here, or should I wait or choose another angle?
- Does my equipment comply with this event’s rules?
- If I am using a polarizer, is its reflection reduction worth the light it costs?
If any answer gives you pause, step aside, check the event guidance, or choose a different photograph. The point is not to get every possible view; it is to make photographs without turning a visitor area or a judging space into an obstacle.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I take photos at a concours?
It depends on the event. Atlanta Motoring Festival permits personal photography, and Greenbrier encourages video and still photography on the show field while asking visitors to respect media and other patrons. Concours d’Elegance Singapore’s 2026 indoor FAQ permits casual photography but prohibits professional equipment and tripods. Check the current rules for the event you plan to attend.
Can I photograph a car while judges are examining it?
Stay out of the judging interaction and do not block or interfere with the judges. Arizona Concours d’Elegance states this explicitly in its media policy. Wait until the examination is over, or choose another car or angle in an area open to you.
Are tripods, flash, or drones allowed?
There is no universal rule in the policies described here. Singapore’s 2026 indoor FAQ prohibits tripods and professional equipment; Atlanta and Greenbrier list drones among prohibited items. Check the specific event’s current equipment policy, including its rules for flash, before packing.
Does a media credential let me into the garage or awards area?
Not automatically. Arizona Concours d’Elegance reserves media credentials for working media, identifies a designated photography location, and restricts garage access unless an official representative accompanies the photographer. Access rules differ by event, so follow the directions attached to your own credential.
Do I need a circular polarizing filter to photograph classic cars?
No. It is optional and may reduce reflections on glass or other reflective surfaces, but it will not remove every reflection. Nikon says a polarizer cuts about 1.5 to 2 stops of light. If you use a screw-on filter, match it to the diameter marked on the lens or listed in its manual.
The Bottom Line
Check the specific concours rules and your access before you pack, then photograph from permitted areas without blocking judges, media, or visitors. Wait through active judging, make room when a viewing spot is busy, and use a circular polarizer only if its reflection reduction is worth the roughly 1.5 to 2 stops of light it costs.
