Start by identifying which NSX you are considering: the first-generation all-aluminum, mid-engine car sold in North America through 2005, or the second-generation hybrid supercar introduced in 2016 and built through the 2022 Type S. Their drivetrains, maintenance records, and inspection priorities are different. For either generation, make the purchase conditional on a documented service history, a VIN and campaign check where applicable, and an independent inspection by a shop experienced with NSXs.

First decide which NSX you are buying

“NSX” covers two distinct cars, not a single continuous specification. The first generation is an analog mid-engine sports car with an all-aluminum structure; the second uses a three-motor hybrid all-wheel-drive system. A model year alone does not establish every detail: market, transmission, body configuration, and individual vehicle history matter. Confirm the car’s identity and equipment from its records and inspection rather than relying on a seller’s shorthand.

Honda Motor Co. reported more than 18,000 first-generation NSXs sold worldwide over 15 years of production, counting through the end of June 2005. That total describes the generation’s production history; it says nothing about the availability, condition, or value of a particular car.

Keep the distinction between a calendar date and a model year in mind when looking at early cars. Honda says the Acura NSX went on sale in the United States in August 1990, while the NSX went on sale in Japan in September 1990; U.S. model-year convention commonly identifies the earliest examples as 1991 models. Ask the seller for the exact model year and market, then check the VIN and vehicle documents. This avoids assuming that a sale date, registration date, and model year mean the same thing.

How the model years differ

Model-year range What to expect What to verify
1990–1996, early first generation The original U.S. offering used a 3.0-liter V6 and five-speed manual. The Type T removable-roof version arrived for the 1995 model year. Honda’s chronology says the Acura NSX went on sale in the United States in August 1990, while the NSX went on sale in Japan in September 1990. U.S. model-year convention commonly identifies the earliest cars as 1991 model year. Confirm the specific car’s market and model year.
1997–2001, first-generation update Honda introduced a 3.2-liter engine paired with a six-speed manual in 1997. Automatic versions retained a different engine/transmission combination. Verify the actual engine and transmission. Do not assume every car from a given year has the manual-transmission specification.
2002–2005, later first generation Honda records an exterior update around the 2001/2002 period. Car and Driver identifies fixed HID headlights from 2002 and says the Targa was the only available configuration through 2005. Body style and equipment availability depend on market. Check the car itself and its documentation rather than treating one market’s lineup as universal.
2016–2022, second generation The second generation arrived in 2016 with Honda’s “three-motor Sport Hybrid SH-AWD®” system. The Type S was the final model. Honda said production would conclude in December 2022 and limited Type S output to 350 units worldwide. Confirm year, trim, market, service history, hybrid-system inspection findings, and VIN-specific campaign status. Type S rarity does not establish condition.

The year ranges above summarize the documented generation and drivetrain changes; they are not a substitute for checking a particular vehicle’s market-specific specification. Honda’s 2005 production announcement covers the end of first-generation production, while its 2021 Type S announcement describes the final second-generation model.

For a first-generation shopper, the most consequential dividing lines in this overview are the 1997 engine and transmission change and the 2002 exterior and headlight update—not a promise that a later example is automatically a better buy. A buyer who prefers a manual should verify the transmission directly, especially when comparing early cars with later specifications. Someone considering a Targa should inspect the roof configuration and its operation as part of the particular car’s condition, without treating the body style itself as evidence of a fault.

What records to request before arranging an inspection

Ask for dated invoices and service records before travelling or paying for an inspection. A verbal claim that a car is “up to date” does not show what was done, when, or whether the work followed the schedule for that model year. Look for continuity: dates and mileage should make sense together, and major service entries should identify the work rather than simply say “serviced.”

A useful first pass is to ask the seller for the VIN, model year, market, trim, transmission or hybrid specification, and copies of available records. Compare those details across the paperwork before arranging specialist time. For each major service entry, note its date, recorded mileage, and description. If the record is vague or a period is unaccounted for, ask the seller to clarify it; do not silently assume that a scheduled item was completed.

First-generation maintenance records

For a first-generation car, focus on the maintenance schedule for that exact year. The 2000 Acura NSX owner’s manual, for example, lists timing-belt replacement and water-pump inspection and directs owners to service by the indicated mileage or time, whichever comes first. That example is not a universal interval for every model year. Have an NSX-qualified shop check the correct manual, the car’s mileage, and the date and documentation of the relevant service. If the records cannot establish when scheduled work was completed, treat the history as unverified and ask the specialist what is needed before purchase.

Do not substitute a seller’s estimate of when work is “due” for the actual service history. The relevant question is whether records demonstrate the work against the applicable year’s mileage-or-time schedule. If an invoice does not clearly identify the work or date, ask the shop to say whether it is adequate evidence or whether further confirmation is needed.

Second-generation maintenance records

Use the maintenance document for the specific model year and consider how the car was driven. The 2022 Acura NSX Maintenance Minder includes inspections of brakes, suspension, driveline boots, fluids, and the fuel system, along with scheduled service items for engine oil, transmission and clutch fluid, spark plugs, coolant, and twin-motor-unit fluid. It specifies brake-fluid replacement every three years. Do not apply that one model-year schedule indiscriminately to other years; ask the shop to compare the vehicle’s records with its own schedule.

For a second-generation car, have the specialist identify any missing scheduled work from the records and explain what should be completed or checked next. A maintenance list is a guide to questions for the technician, not proof that a listed item was neglected or that a car with completed entries has no other issues.

Repair, modification, and use history

Ask whether the car has been repaired, modified, tracked, stored for long periods, or had its roof or drivetrain components worked on. These questions help the inspector interpret the car’s condition; the available sources do not establish that every such history is inherently a defect. Request invoices, descriptions of parts and work, and any relevant supporting records. Have the inspector distinguish documented work from a seller’s recollection.

First-generation issues and inspection priorities

The available buyer-guide evidence identifies a narrow early-manual-transmission concern, not a defect common to every NSX. Beyond that lead, the most useful approach is to examine the car’s records, configuration, operation, and condition with a qualified independent specialist. Age alone does not prove a component has failed, and a checklist cannot diagnose a car remotely.

Investigate the early manual-transmission snap-ring concern

Car and Driver’s 2012 buyer guide describes a concern affecting a defined set of 1991–1992 manual-transmission cars. It identifies transmission numbers ending in 3542 through 5978 as worth investigating. The guide explains that an internal groove that is too wide can allow a snap ring to resonate and break; excessive shifter movement under engine load is cited as a sign to check.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use this as a specialist’s inspection lead, not as a conclusion that a car has a defect. Ask the NSX specialist to confirm whether the specific transmission number is within the stated range, whether the relevant repair was completed, and what documentation supports that conclusion. A car’s model year alone is not enough to establish whether the concern applies.

Do not rely on a quick check of the shift lever or on a seller’s assurance to settle the question. The guide’s concern is tied to a transmission-number range and a described internal mechanism. Give the inspector that specific lead, provide the transmission number if available, and ask for a written conclusion that separates confirmed repair evidence from an unresolved question.

Have the car inspected on a lift and driven

Car and Driver recommends a pre-purchase inspection and cautions that parts and repairs can be expensive. Commission an independent inspection from a technician familiar with NSX structure and systems. Ask for a lift inspection, records review, and an assessment of operation—not just a quick visual check or a generic used-car inspection.

Give the inspector the service records and the specific questions you want resolved. For a first-generation car, ask them to assess:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Whether the maintenance history and scheduled work are supported by dated documentation.
  • Transmission operation and shifter behavior, with special attention to the snap-ring investigation if the car’s transmission is in the identified range.
  • Evidence of repairs or modifications, and whether the work appears consistent with the vehicle’s records.
  • Body condition, roof configuration and operation, tires, alignment, and completeness of equipment.

These are inspection areas, not a claim that each item is a known model-wide failure. Ask the technician to document findings, explain which issues affect safety or use, and separate immediate concerns from items that simply need monitoring.

Before authorizing work, ask what the inspection includes and request a written report that identifies the basis for any recommendation. If the shop finds a concern, clarify whether it has been directly confirmed, needs additional diagnosis, or is simply an area to monitor. Because specialist parts and repairs can be expensive, ask the shop for a repair estimate tied to its findings rather than relying on a generic allowance or a number from another car. No single estimate can be inferred from a model name alone.

Second-generation issues and inspection priorities

The documented buyer checks for the second generation include a VIN-specific fuel-pump recall campaign and maintenance of its hybrid and drivetrain systems. The available manufacturer documents establish those topics, but they do not provide a universal list of second-generation defects or establish the condition of an individual car.

Check the fuel-pump campaign by VIN

American Honda’s Service Bulletin 24-010, dated August 16, 2024, covers all trims of certain 2017–2020 NSX vehicles, with eligibility determined by VIN. The bulletin says fuel-pump motor impellers may swell and cause a pump to seize, potentially leading to engine malfunction, loss of motive power, or a stall.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before purchase, have an Acura dealer or official campaign-status channel check the exact VIN. Request documentation showing whether the car was eligible and, if applicable, whether the repair was completed. The bulletin reported limited repair-part availability when it was issued; that is a historical statement, not a reliable description of availability today.

Do not decide campaign eligibility from the year or trim alone: the bulletin uses the VIN to determine which vehicles are covered. Ask for the result for the specific car, and retain the result or repair record with the purchase documents. If the status is unclear, contact an Acura dealer or official channel to resolve it before treating the campaign as completed.

Inspect the hybrid and drivetrain systems

Arrange for a shop qualified to assess the second-generation NSX’s high-voltage hybrid and drivetrain systems. Ask it to review diagnostic status, service records, tires, brakes, and recall completion, and to explain any findings in terms of what they mean for operation and required follow-up. The 2022 maintenance document’s inspections and scheduled fluids provide useful context for the 2022 model, but the vehicle’s own year-specific schedule should control.

For a hybrid NSX, a general inspection that does not address the high-voltage and drivetrain systems is not an adequate substitute for qualified system-specific assessment. Ask the shop to state what it checked, whether any diagnostic questions remain, and what additional testing—if any—it recommends. The documents summarized here identify inspection and maintenance topics, not a checklist that can certify a vehicle remotely.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Run a disciplined comparison before making an offer

Compare actual cars on evidence rather than reputation, rarity, or a seller’s summary. Use the same questions for each candidate so that a well-documented example can be distinguished from one with unresolved gaps.

Comparison point What to record Why it matters
Generation and model year First or second generation, exact model year, and market. Maintenance requirements, drivetrain, and the relevant inspection leads differ.
Drivetrain and configuration Manual, automatic, or hybrid specification; body and roof configuration; trim. Year alone may not identify the actual drivetrain or market-specific equipment.
Service history Dated invoices, mileage, work performed, and unresolved gaps. Documented maintenance is more useful than a general assurance that servicing is current.
Campaign history VIN-check results and any repair documentation for applicable campaigns. Recall eligibility and completion need confirmation for the individual car.
Repair and modification history Known repairs, modifications, and supporting records. The inspector can evaluate the actual work and condition rather than speculate from a label.
Independent inspection Written findings from an NSX-experienced technician, including recommended follow-up. It grounds the decision in the particular vehicle instead of broad model-year assumptions.

For a Type S, record the trim as a documented distinction, but do not treat limited production as evidence that the car is better maintained or in better condition. Let records and inspection findings carry that weight.

When two cars appear similar, compare the strength of their evidence rather than treating a longer option list or a rarer trim as a proxy for condition. A dated invoice, documented campaign result, or written inspection finding can answer a specific question; an incomplete record or broad seller description cannot. Keep unresolved questions visible in your comparison notes so they do not disappear when attention shifts to a car’s specification.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Use the inspection findings to decide whether to proceed

Do not treat an inspection as a pass/fail ritual. Ask the technician to explain the seriousness and evidence behind each finding, whether it affects safe operation, and whether the condition can be clarified with additional documentation or testing. A seller’s willingness to provide records and allow an independent inspection is important to getting those answers, but it is not itself proof of condition.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Resolve identity questions. Confirm the VIN, model year, market, trim, drivetrain, and body configuration against the car and its records.
  2. Resolve history questions. Match dated service entries to the correct year’s maintenance schedule; investigate missing or inconsistent records rather than assuming work was done.
  3. Resolve applicable technical leads. For an early manual car, have the specialist check the stated transmission-number range and repair evidence. For a potentially eligible 2017–2020 second-generation car, obtain a VIN-specific campaign result.
  4. Review the written inspection. Request clear findings on structure, operation, systems, tires and brakes, plus any recommended additional diagnosis. Do not convert a visual impression into a guarantee about hidden or future problems.
  5. Make the decision from the complete record. If a material question remains unanswered, pause the purchase until it is resolved or decide with that uncertainty explicitly understood.

Use the report to distinguish three different outcomes: a concern the technician has confirmed, a question that needs further diagnosis, and a maintenance item that is due or not adequately documented. Ask which items must be addressed before the car is used, which can be planned for later, and what evidence would close any open question. This makes it easier to compare the car’s condition with your own tolerance for uncertainty without pretending that an inspection predicts every future repair.

Parts and restoration support

Honda announced Honda Heritage Works on December 12, 2025, with a planned start date of April 1, 2026. The announcement said the program would provide selected genuine heritage parts globally, initially for the first-generation NSX, and offer restoration service in Japan. Honda described “Basic Restoration” and “Total Restoration” packages and said the available parts list would be posted and updated through the program. It also said applications for the new Japanese restoration service would be accepted through Honda Cars dealerships beginning in early January 2026.

Those announcements do not establish that a particular part is currently catalogued, available in a buyer’s country, or priced for a specific repair. Check the current catalog, local supply, pricing, and application status directly before relying on restoration support in a purchase decision. Treat the announced program as a possible support avenue, not a guarantee that every needed component or service is available to you.

How to buy with fewer surprises

Choose the generation and specification that fit your priorities, then evaluate each candidate on its own documentation and inspection results. For a first-generation car, confirm year-specific scheduled maintenance and investigate the narrow early-manual snap-ring lead only when it applies. For a second-generation car, confirm year-appropriate maintenance and check fuel-pump campaign status by VIN where relevant. In either case, make an NSX-experienced independent inspection part of the decision, not an optional final formality.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which Honda NSX generation should I buy?

Choose by the specification and history you want, not by a general claim that one generation is better. The first generation is the all-aluminum mid-engine car produced through 2005 in North America; the second generation arrived in 2016 with a three-motor hybrid SH-AWD system and ended with the 2022 Type S. Compare actual drivetrain, market, maintenance records, and inspection findings.

What are common problems with the Acura NSX?

The documented buyer-guide issue highlighted here is narrow: certain 1991–1992 manual-transmission cars, identified by transmission numbers ending 3542 through 5978, warrant investigation for a snap-ring concern. For certain 2017–2020 second-generation cars, check VIN-specific fuel-pump recall eligibility and repair status. These are not universal defects, and the cited documents do not establish a complete defect list for either generation.

What should I look for when buying a used NSX?

Start with the exact model year, market, trim, transmission or hybrid specification, then request dated maintenance and repair records. Have an NSX-experienced technician inspect the car on a lift and assess its operation, records, tires, alignment, brakes, and relevant systems. Ask for written findings and follow-up recommendations.

How can I check whether a 2017–2020 NSX had the fuel-pump recall repair?

Ask an Acura dealer or official campaign-status channel to check the exact VIN. American Honda Service Bulletin 24-010, dated August 16, 2024, covers all trims of certain 2017–2020 vehicles, but eligibility is VIN-specific. Request documentation of the result and, if applicable, repair completion.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How much does it cost to maintain or repair a used NSX?

The cited sources do not establish current maintenance or repair prices, and costs depend on the individual car, work required, market, and parts availability. Car and Driver cautions that NSX parts and repairs can be expensive. Ask an NSX-qualified shop to assess the specific car and provide estimates for any identified work; do not rely on a generic figure.

Are parts and restoration support available for the first-generation NSX?

Honda announced Honda Heritage Works, planned to begin April 1, 2026, with selected genuine heritage parts globally, initially for the first-generation NSX, and restoration service in Japan. The announcement described Basic Restoration and Total Restoration packages. Confirm current catalog contents, local availability, pricing, and application status directly with Honda or an authorized channel.

The Bottom Line

Buy the individual NSX whose identity, service history, campaign status where applicable, and independent inspection findings you can verify. For a first-generation manual, investigate the snap-ring concern only if the transmission falls within the stated range; for a potentially eligible 2017–2020 second-generation car, obtain a VIN-specific fuel-pump campaign result. Leave unresolved questions open until a qualified specialist answers them.
