There is no single cheapest or most comprehensive EV charging app for every UK driver. The useful comparison is the price and payment method available at the charger you plan to use, whether the app can activate it, and whether that point suits your route and car. Electroverse offers multi-network roaming, Shell Recharge combines Shell and partner access, and Zapmap helps drivers find and plan around UK charge points.
Which EV charging app is cheapest?
It depends on the charger, the payment route and, in some cases, whether you pay for a subscription. A network’s price at one location is not necessarily its price elsewhere, and a roaming app may show a different rate from the operator’s own app. Compare the price per kilowatt-hour (kWh) shown for the specific charger before you set off, rather than choosing from a headline rate or a claim that an app covers a large number of points.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
Electroverse says compatible chargers display the latest operator-supplied price in its app, but warns that its rate can differ from charging directly with the operator. Shell’s published tariffs and offers are also subject to location and time conditions. For either service, check the price and applicable offer in the app for the selected point; do not assume a “from” rate applies to every charger.
To compare two options fairly, look at the cost for the same amount of energy at the same location, using the payment method you would actually use. Include any subscription fee and check whether the tariff or discount applies at that site. A lower advertised rate may not be the less expensive choice if it requires a monthly fee or is unavailable on your route.

How do the main UK charging apps compare?
| Service | Role and coverage | Payment and price | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Octopus Electroverse | Multi-network roaming: its app and web map show compatible chargers. It says UK drivers can use it whether or not their home energy supplier is Octopus. | Start a charge in the app or use an Electrocard. Electroverse says it has no subscription or transaction fee; compatible-charger prices are supplied by operators. It advertises 5% off for Octopus Go customers and 8% off for Intelligent Octopus Go customers. | Confirm compatibility and the displayed price. Its rate can differ from the operator’s direct rate; the advertised discounts apply to the specified Octopus home-energy customers. |
| Shell Recharge | Shell says its app provides access to more than 70,000 UK public charge points across Shell and partner networks, including points from more than 60 operators. | Start with the app or charge card, or tap contactless at supported locations. Shell lists a £9.99 monthly subscription and conditional discounts. | The point count is Shell’s own published coverage claim, not an independent audit. Check that the selected point accepts your chosen payment method and that an offer applies there. |
| Zapmap | A UK charge-point map and route-planning product. Its network guide groups charging into en-route, destination, and on-street/community use. | Zapmap’s account FAQ search result describes app payment at participating networks and a charging-card option for eligible Premium subscribers. Current terms should be checked directly. | A point appearing on a map, showing live status, and being payable through Zapmap are different things. Confirm activation and payment support for the individual charger. |
Octopus Electroverse: roaming with a price shown per charger
Electroverse is useful when you want one account or card to access compatible chargers operated by different companies. Its service page says a charge can be started in the app or with its Electrocard, and that the service charges neither a subscription nor a transaction fee. The price is not a universal Electroverse tariff: it is supplied for each compatible charger by the operator. Check the app listing before relying on roaming, since participation does not mean every charger is included or that the roaming price matches the operator’s direct price.
Octopus advertises a 5% discount for Octopus Go customers and an 8% discount for Intelligent Octopus Go customers. These are customer-specific offers, not general discounts for every Electroverse user. Check the offer terms and the charger’s displayed rate before calculating a saving.
Shell Recharge: broad partner access and several ways to pay
Shell says its UK app reaches more than 70,000 public charge points, including over 1,000 Shell-branded chargers, over 14,000 on-street points, and points from over 60 operators. Those figures are Shell’s own published claims, accessed on 12 October 2026; they describe a mix of Shell and partner coverage, not a count of Shell-owned chargers. The Shell UK charging page gives the company’s current coverage description.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Shell lists app, charge-card and contactless payment routes, but contactless is only available at supported points. Its pricing page, last updated 2 September 2026, lists a £9.99 monthly subscription and discounts at eligible locations. It advertises Night Saver prices from 60p/kWh at participating sites, or from 42p/kWh when combined with the subscription. These are conditional “from” rates, not guaranteed prices across the UK. Location, time and eligibility matter, so use the app to confirm the tariff before making a journey around an offer.

Zapmap: finding and planning are not the same as paying
Zapmap’s network guide is useful for identifying operators and sorting points by the kind of journey or parking situation they serve. Its map can help find relevant chargers, but map coverage alone does not establish that a point is live, compatible with your vehicle, or payable through Zapmap. The guide recommends using the live map’s network filter to narrow results. See the Zapmap UK network guide.
Zapmap’s account FAQ search result describes payment through the app at participating networks and a charging-card option for eligible Premium subscribers. Because the help page has redirected, do not rely on that search-result wording as current plan terms: check the Zapmap account FAQs for current availability and eligibility before subscribing or setting up payment.
Can you pay by contactless, app or charging card?
Payment is charger-specific. The same network app may cover points with different payment facilities, and access through a roaming service does not guarantee that every payment method is available at every charger. Shell says customers can start through its app or charge card and can tap contactless at supported points; its pricing page specifies contactless at selected points. For other operators, check the charger listing or the payment instructions at the site.
Recommended Free Tools
- App: Check that the particular point supports payment and activation in that app, not just that it appears on a map.
- RFID or charge card: Verify that the card is accepted by the charger and that your account is active. Electroverse calls its access card the Electrocard; Shell offers a charge card.
- Contactless: Look for explicit support at the specific charger. Do not assume a contactless terminal is present because a nearby charger has one.
Shell says app and charge-card payments can be consolidated into a monthly invoice, while contactless is available at selected points. That can make account-based payment convenient for tracking charges, but it does not make the app or card rate identical to the contactless price. Compare the displayed tariff for the payment route you intend to use.

How should you compare network coverage?
“Coverage” can mean several different things: how many physical points exist, how many appear in an app, how many are currently available, or how many can actually be activated and paid for through that service. These measures are not interchangeable. Roaming broadens the places where one app may work, but it does not prove that every operator participates, that a listed charger is working, or that the price equals the operator’s own tariff.
Start with the places you regularly charge: your home area, work or destination parking, and the routes you drive. Use a map’s filters to find relevant operators and charging locations, then open individual listings to check connector, charging speed, live status, price and payment support. Zapmap groups public networks into en-route, destination, and on-street/community categories, a practical way to think about whether a map result fits the trip rather than simply counting pins.
Shell’s more-than-70,000-point figure is a useful indication of the reach Shell claims for its app, but it combines Shell-branded and partner points. There is no directly comparable independent figure in the cited material that ranks Electroverse, Shell Recharge and Zapmap by total interoperable coverage. It would therefore be misleading to declare one the coverage winner from those figures alone.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhat matters beyond the tariff?
A low price only helps if the charger suits the car and is usable when you arrive. Compare the practical details at the points you expect to use, especially on journeys where you need a dependable alternative if the first choice is unavailable.

The durable IP65-rated waterproof housing and reinforced cable ensure reliable charging in all weather conditions, keeping your vehicle safe year-round.
- Connector and charging speed: Check the connector listed for the individual unit and whether its advertised power meets your needs. Do not infer speed from the app’s overall network coverage.
- Live availability and reliability: Use the live status where available, but treat it as a guide rather than a guarantee. On longer routes, identify another suitable stop.
- Payment and support: Confirm how to start a session and how to contact support if activation or billing fails. A map listing is not proof of payment access.
- Value over convenience: Compare the total cost at the locations you will use, including subscription fees, roaming differences and offer eligibility.
Zapmap’s 2025 survey release names payment choice, customer support, ease of use, reliability and value among drivers’ considerations. In that release, Tesla was the large rapid/ultra-rapid category winner and Fastned the medium rapid/ultra-rapid category winner. Those are dated network-category results, not a ranking of the apps compared here. The same 2025 release reported Fastned at 26 UK locations and more than 150 devices, and Ionity at 270 devices across 37 UK locations at that time; these are historical figures and should not be treated as current 2026 counts. See the Zapmap 2025 survey release. Its reported results reinforce why price is only one decision factor, but they do not establish which app will be best for a particular driver.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is a paid charging-app subscription worth it?
Work out whether the discount applies to chargers you will actually use, then compare the expected saving with the subscription cost. For Shell’s listed £9.99 monthly subscription, a simple test is:
Monthly net saving = eligible charging spend × effective discount − £9.99.
Use only the spend at eligible locations and the discount actually offered there. If the calculation is positive in a typical month, the plan may save money; if it is negative, paying the subscription would cost more than the discount returns. The advertised Night Saver “from” prices do not by themselves establish a saving for your route because participation, time and location conditions apply. Recalculate when your driving or the tariff changes.

Electroverse says it has no subscription fee, though that does not mean every charge is cheaper than paying an operator directly. For occasional public charging, a no-subscription access option and a payment method accepted at your regular locations may be enough. Frequent public charging makes it more worthwhile to compare eligible subscription discounts against realistic monthly use, rather than assuming a plan pays for itself.
Which app should you use for your driving?
If you charge occasionally
Prioritize a map that helps you find the right point and a payment method available there. Check whether a nearby charger accepts contactless before you depend on it; otherwise, install or set up the relevant network or roaming app in advance. Avoid paying a recurring subscription unless your expected eligible savings exceed its fee.
If you use public chargers often
Compare tariffs on the routes and at the locations you use most. Check direct operator prices against roaming prices, then calculate any subscription break-even using your likely monthly kWh and only eligible sites. Keep a backup payment route for important trips because a preferred app’s map coverage does not guarantee that a particular point can be activated through it.

Try a roaming option such as Electroverse where it lists compatible points, but check the per-charger rate and availability before charging. Shell also presents a multi-operator option through its published partner coverage. Neither a large coverage claim nor roaming access proves universal participation or the lowest tariff. For trip planning, use a map such as Zapmap to locate candidate chargers, then verify the exact point’s activation and payment options in the service you plan to use.
