Use the vehicle’s published dimensions and turning-circle convention as planning data, creep at low speed, make small steering corrections, and keep watching for curbs, posts, pedestrians, low obstacles and overhangs. Parking sensors, cameras or an automatic system can assist, but the driver remains responsible for every movement.
The 2017 smart fortwo shows why specifications need context: Mercedes-Benz lists a 22.8-foot curb-to-curb turning circle and, separately, a 24-foot wall-to-wall figure. Those measurements describe different clearance conditions. The announced all-electric smart #2 is a future model, not a current universal reference: smart announced 2,746 mm of length and a 6.95 m curb-to-curb circle on October 12, 2026, while stating that its specifications and equipment could change during homologation.

What makes a two-seat microcar useful in tight streets
A microcar’s short body can reduce the space needed ahead of or behind it, and a small turning circle can reduce the number of corrections required in a constrained street. Neither fact means the vehicle fits every gap. The usable envelope includes the mirrors, tires, doors, overhangs, suspension movement, curb height and the path swept while steering.
Parking is therefore a clearance-and-control problem rather than a simple length test. Before committing to a space, identify the complete opening and the route into it. A gap that looks longer than the car may still be unusable if its entrance is pinched by a post, a high curb or a wall that catches a mirror.

Length, width and turning circle answer different questions
- Length indicates the body’s front-to-rear footprint once the vehicle is stationary.
- Width indicates body clearance, but a published width may exclude mirrors and other protrusions.
- Turning circle describes how tightly the vehicle can turn under a particular measurement convention; it does not tell you the width of an available parking space.
- Approach path includes the swept area of the front and rear corners as you enter, leave or correct the position.
Use all four ideas together. Manufacturer figures frame an assessment; they do not guarantee that a particular opening, curb or approach is safe.
Reference dimensions: the 2017 smart fortwo and announced smart #2
The following figures are manufacturer-published specifications, not independent testing. They apply only to the stated model and measurement convention.

Converting units does not remove the convention difference. The fortwo’s 22.8-foot curb-to-curb number is not the same clearance condition as its 24-foot wall-to-wall number. When comparing any vehicle, record whether the figure is curb-to-curb or wall-to-wall and keep that label attached to the number.

Why the fortwo’s width is not a gap guarantee
The 65.5-inch figure for the 2017 fortwo coupe excludes mirrors. A space that is only slightly wider than the body can still damage a mirror or leave no margin for steering error. Measure or visually account for the widest points that will pass the opening, then consider whether a person can safely open a door once parked. If the space is bounded by uneven walls, poles or parked vehicles, the narrowest point—not the average width—controls the decision.
What the smart #2 announcement does and does not establish
smart announced the #2 as an all-electric model with a 2,746 mm length and a 6.95 m curb-to-curb turning circle. Those are useful planning references, but the announcement explicitly leaves specifications and equipment subject to change during homologation. Do not use the figures as a promise of final dimensions, a delivery date, equipment level or legal availability in a particular country.
smart’s announcement says, “With a turning circle of 6.95 metres curb-to-curb, the smart #2 makes navigating tight city streets and parking in narrow spaces effortless.” That is the manufacturer’s promotional characterization, not an independent finding. The same announcement quotes Dr. Tilo Schweers, Vice President R&D Europe of smart Europe GmbH: “We tested the smart #2 on proving grounds, in wind tunnels, and on public roads across different climates, because confidence behind the wheel must hold up in the real world, not just on paper.” This describes the manufacturer’s development testing; it is not a substitute for an owner’s clearance check.
Pre-parking assessment: decide whether the space is usable
Do this assessment before the front wheels enter the space. If any part of the route is hidden, stop in a legal and safe position and improve your view rather than guessing.

- Confirm the rule first. Read signs and markings, check payment or permit requirements, and observe restrictions on direction, time, loading, disabled access, driveways and corner clearances. A short car does not create a general legal exception.
- Identify the narrowest opening. Look at both ends of the space and at the approach lane. Include posts, bollards, bicycle racks, open doors, trailer parts, wheel stops and any object that is low enough to disappear below a window line.
- Account for the full vehicle. Use the actual vehicle’s length and body width, then add mirror clearance and a practical margin for steering variation. Published body width alone is incomplete.
- Check height and ground transitions. A curb, step, drainage channel, ditch or steep ramp can stop a wheel even when the plan view appears wide enough. Look for overhanging signs, branches and loading equipment above the roofline.
- Trace the approach path. Imagine the front outside corner, rear inside corner and mirrors as the car turns. A space can be long enough once straight but impossible to enter because the turning path clips an object.
- Check people and moving traffic. Wait for pedestrians, cyclists and vehicles to clear the path. Keep the maneuver slow enough to stop immediately.
If you cannot see the whole route, choose a different space or reposition to gain a view. There is no universal minimum gap size that can be established from the dimensions above.
General low-speed technique
Use a steady, minimal speed and make small steering inputs. The sources do not establish a universal speed, steering-wheel count or reference point, so do not apply a fixed formula to every microcar or street layout.
- Set the seat and mirrors before moving. Keep direct sightlines available instead of relying on a screen.
- Release the brake smoothly or use very light throttle as appropriate for the transmission, keeping the car ready to stop.
- Turn progressively, pause, look again, and continue only when the clearance remains visible.
- Keep checking both sides, the front corner and the rear corner; the part of the car closest to an obstacle changes as the steering angle changes.
- If a pedestrian or vehicle enters the path, stop fully and reassess rather than steering around them while moving.
Parallel parking a two-seat microcar
1. Set up alongside the space
Approach in the direction allowed by the road markings and leave enough lateral room to begin the turn without striking the vehicle ahead. Align the car so that you can see the space and its far end. Do not use a single fixed bumper or mirror reference as a universal cue; wheelbase, steering geometry, curb shape and space length vary.
2. Reverse slowly into the opening
Select reverse only after checking behind and to both sides. Begin the turn gradually while monitoring the rear, the inside curb and the outside front corner. The front corner swings outward as the rear moves toward the space, so watch the vehicle ahead as well as the curb.
3. Pause before each correction
When the vehicle’s angle reduces your view, stop. Recheck the curb, mirrors, pedestrians and the vehicle at either end. A small forward-and-back correction is preferable to carrying speed into a blind area.
4. Straighten and center
Once the car is aligned with the curb, straighten the wheels and adjust at walking pace. Leave legal and practical room for neighboring vehicles, cyclists and door access. Do not assume that a short body permits parking partly across a marking or outside the designated area.
Perpendicular and angled spaces
Use the widest lawful approach available
For a perpendicular or angled bay, approach as wide and square as traffic, markings and surrounding vehicles permit. A broad entry reduces the severity of the steering correction, but it does not eliminate the need to monitor mirrors and corners.

Enter under control
Turn at low speed, keep the bay lines or neighboring vehicles in view, and stop if the front corner or mirror approaches an obstacle. The short footprint of a microcar may make the final position easier, but the turning path can still contact a post or vehicle.

If the car is misaligned, stop, select the appropriate direction and make a small correction. Avoid repeated rapid shuttling when sightlines are poor. Before opening a door, check for cyclists, traffic and the curb height.
Leaving a tight space safely
- Look through the rear window and mirrors, then check the front corners and both sides.
- Identify low objects, wheel stops, drainage channels and pedestrians that may not appear on a camera display.
- Move out at very low speed, stopping whenever the view changes or another road user approaches.
- Straighten only when the vehicle has enough clearance from adjacent cars, walls or posts.
- After joining the lane, confirm that the space, curb and surrounding traffic are clear before accelerating.
Do not rely solely on a camera, ultrasonic sensor or automatic parking feature. Detection ranges and object recognition have limits, especially around narrow or irregular spaces, curbs, steps, gullies and ditches.
Parking-assist systems: useful aid, not a hand-off
The 2024 smart Malaysia owner’s manual says the driver must intervene when necessary and specifically warns about narrow or irregular spaces and features such as curbs, steps, gullies and ditches. It also states: “As a driver, you should abide by local laws and regulations, and always take full responsibility for safe parking.” That manual is for the Malaysia market and its relevant equipment; another market or model may operate differently.
Before activating an automatic maneuver
- Read the owner’s manual for the exact model, model year, market and fitted system.
- Confirm that the space is legal and that the system has a clear, usable route.
- Inspect for objects the sensors may not detect reliably, including very low, narrow, irregular, soft or overhanging items.
- Keep your hands and attention ready to brake or steer as the manual requires.
During the maneuver
Watch the surroundings continuously. If the system pauses, signals a limit or requests takeover, stop and follow the manual’s procedure. A sensor warning, unexpected trajectory, pedestrian, cyclist or uncertain clearance is a reason to brake and reassess, not to wait for the system to resolve the situation.

After the system finishes
Check the final distance to curbs, walls and neighboring vehicles yourself. Automatic positioning does not override markings, payment rules, loading restrictions or access requirements.
Local law and space etiquette
Parking rules depend on the city and jurisdiction. The reviewed sources do not establish a universal microcar exemption. Follow signs, road markings and local regulations, including rules for direction of travel, distance from intersections, driveways, crossings, hydrants, bus stops, cycle lanes, accessible bays and loading areas.

Even where a vehicle physically fits, leaving it partly outside a marked bay can block a sidewalk, wheelchair route, cycle lane or emergency access. If the legal status is unclear, consult the local authority’s current guidance rather than inferring permission from the car’s size.

“The camera shows everything.”
Why it fails: Camera views can omit areas, distort distance and fail to reveal low or irregular hazards. The smart Malaysia manual’s cautions include such obstacles.
Recovery: Stop, use direct observation, get out to inspect when lawful and safe, or abandon the maneuver.
“A fixed steering count works everywhere.”
Why it fails: Space geometry, steering angle, tire position, curb shape and vehicle variant differ.
Recovery: Use slow movement, visual checks and incremental corrections instead of memorized counts.
How to practice without risking public-road damage
Practice the sequence in a legal, empty area with clear boundaries and a spotter who stays outside the vehicle’s path. Use soft, highly visible markers only where permitted, and leave generous space. Rehearse stopping, checking mirrors, looking over the shoulder and correcting at low speed. Practice both entering and leaving so that you learn the sightlines that disappear at different steering angles.
Do not treat a practice layout as proof that a public space of the same apparent size is safe. Real streets add parked vehicles, pedestrians, slopes, uneven curbs and legal constraints.
Choosing the right vehicle information
For a specific car, obtain the owner’s manual and the official specification for that model year and market. Mercedes-Benz USA lists smart manuals by model year and variant. Confirm:

- Whether the measurement applies to a coupe, cabriolet, electric version or another variant.
- What parking-assist equipment is fitted and what object or space limitations the manual describes.
- Whether a future model’s announced figures remain provisional because of homologation.
Keep the manual’s warnings with the vehicle’s measured dimensions. Neither one alone describes every street-level hazard.
A repeatable decision checklist
- Legal: Is parking permitted here, in this direction, at this time and for this vehicle?
- Opening: Is the narrowest entrance wider than the full vehicle, including mirrors, with a margin for correction?
- Path: Can the front and rear corners turn without touching vehicles, posts, walls or curbs?
- Surface: Are there steps, gullies, ditches, steep ramps, wheel stops or high curbs?
- Visibility: Can you see the whole route, and can you stop immediately if that changes?
- Control: Are you moving slowly enough to pause and make a small correction?
- Assist: If using an automatic system, have you read the exact manual and kept responsibility for braking and steering?
- Exit: Will you be able to leave without blocking another road user or striking an obstacle?
Bottom line for city drivers
A two-seat microcar can simplify tight-city maneuvering when its complete clearance envelope and turning path fit the space, but compact dimensions are not permission to guess. Treat the 2017 smart fortwo’s 22.8-foot curb-to-curb and 24-foot wall-to-wall figures as convention-specific references; treat the announced smart #2 figures as provisional until homologation; and apply the same disciplined process to any make or model. Assess legality and the full approach first, move slowly, keep direct visual checks, and take over from assistance whenever the route or system is uncertain.
