With a Tesla Model S yoke, the safest way to park or make a tight turn is to reduce speed until you can stop immediately, choose a steering-weight setting that does not make the maneuver unnecessarily difficult, and keep checking the car’s clearance yourself. Tesla does not publish a required hand-over-hand or hand-shuffling sequence for the yoke, so use a hand movement that keeps continuous control rather than treating any particular technique as factory-approved.
Autosteer is a poor choice for a tight turn because Tesla limits steering while it is active. Autopark can maneuver into some parallel and perpendicular spaces, but it is conditional assistance—not a space-finding guarantee or a substitute for looking around and being ready to brake.

Set up the yoke and steering effort before moving
Make adjustments while the Model S is stationary. Tesla’s owner manual places the steering-weight control at Controls > Dynamics > Steering Weight and warns not to adjust the yoke’s position while driving. The setting changes how much effort you need to turn, not the size of the parking space or the car’s turning path. See the Model S Owner’s Manual for the control and yoke-position instructions.
| Setting | What Tesla says it does | Practical use when parking |
|---|---|---|
| Light | Reduces the effort needed to turn the yoke and makes the car easier to drive and park in town. | Usually the least tiring choice for repeated low-speed maneuvering. |
| Standard | Tesla’s preferred balance for most conditions. | A sensible general setting if you do not want to change the car’s normal steering feel. |
| Heavy | Requires more effort and is described as feeling more responsive at higher speeds. | It can make a slow parking maneuver feel unnecessarily laborious. |
Those descriptions are Tesla’s, not a promise that one setting is correct for every driver. Select Light, Standard, or Heavy before you begin, then leave the screen and concentrate on the surroundings. If the yoke position itself feels wrong, stop in a safe place and adjust it before continuing.

Manual parking: a controlled sequence that works with a yoke
The official material does not specify where each hand must go or whether you must use hand-over-hand steering. The procedure below is general low-speed driving guidance, not a Tesla-endorsed hand technique. Whichever movement you choose, keep enough contact and control to correct the car or stop it without delay; never let a hand movement, a reach for the screen, or an awkward grip distract you from clearance.
Perpendicular or angled space
- Approach slowly. Reduce speed before the turn, not after the front of the car has entered the aisle. Scan both sides for pedestrians, posts, low objects, open doors, and vehicles that may move.
- Choose a wide starting path. Leave enough room on the side opposite the turn for the rear of the Model S to swing. A yoke does not change the car’s body dimensions, so use the same clearance judgment you would use with a conventional wheel.
- Turn progressively. Begin steering when the front has reached the point that gives the nose a clear path into the space. Make small corrections instead of quickly alternating from full turn to full opposite lock.
- Check the outside and inside edges. Look toward the front corner that is closest to the obstacle, then check the opposite side and mirrors. A camera view can supplement—not replace—direct observation.
- Straighten for the final position. As the car becomes parallel with the lines or neighboring vehicles, unwind the yoke smoothly. Stop and reset if the car is not centered; a short, deliberate correction is safer than forcing the vehicle into the space.
- Finish with the brake applied. Confirm the car is fully within the space, the doors can open safely, and no person or object has entered the path before selecting Park or leaving the vehicle.
Parallel parking
- Inspect the entire space before committing. Check its length, the curb, the vehicle ahead and behind, drainage gaps, posts, and any object below camera height.
- Start with a slow, controlled alignment. Position the Model S so the initial reverse or forward path will not sweep into the neighboring vehicle. Use the brake to regulate speed rather than carrying momentum into the turn.
- Reverse or move forward in short, observable stages. After each steering input, look in the direction of travel and then reassess the front corner and rear corner. Stop if a pedestrian, cyclist, or vehicle appears.
- Use a multi-point correction when needed. If the first arc leaves the car too far from the curb or too close to an obstacle, stop, select the required direction, and make another small correction. Do not continue simply because the original path looked clear.
- Center the car and secure it. Leave usable space at both ends, keep the wheels and body clear of the curb, and select Park only after checking the final position.
How to move your hands
There is no Tesla manual instruction that says a yoke must be shuffled, crossed, spun, or passed from one hand to the other during a tight maneuver. Drivers differ in reach and comfort, and the best movement is the one that preserves reliable control and lets you monitor the car. Do not release the yoke in a way that prevents an immediate correction, and do not practice a new technique in traffic or beside a valuable vehicle. Learn the car’s response in an empty, legal area at very low speed.
Making a tight turn safely
A tight turn is primarily a speed-and-clearance problem. Enter slowly enough that you can stop before the front or rear corner reaches an obstacle. Complete most braking before the steering input, then maintain a steady crawl while you follow the path.

- Look through the turn toward the open exit, then return your attention to the closest front corner.
- Check the opposite front corner, mirrors, and the area behind the car before reversing or changing direction.
- Expect pedestrians and cyclists to appear from the side that was hidden at the start of the maneuver.
- When the view is blocked, stop and reposition rather than guessing.
When one arc is not enough
A narrow garage, driveway, or parking aisle may require a three-point or multi-point turn. Stop completely before changing direction, select the indicated gear, and verify the display shows the mode you intend to use. Each extra movement should be treated as a new maneuver: check the front, rear, and sides, then move only far enough to create the next path. If the available space does not permit a safe correction, abandon the turn and choose a larger area.
Account for changing visibility
Lighting, weather, parked vehicles, pillars, and surface markings can change what the cameras and your eyes can identify. A space that appears open from the driver’s seat may contain a low curb, a narrow post, or an object hidden behind another vehicle. If you cannot establish a clear path, stop and get a better view rather than relying on a screen image or a predicted trajectory.
Why Autosteer should not be your tight-turn method
Tesla’s Model S Autosteer instructions state: “Steering is limited when Autosteer is enabled. Therefore, Model S may not be able to handle tight turns. Be prepared to take control of the vehicle at all times.” The same guidance requires the driver to keep hands on the yoke and monitor the surroundings while Autosteer is active.

Do not engage Autosteer to make a garage turn, a sharp parking-aisle corner, or a turn where the car must follow a very small radius. If a turn becomes tighter than expected, take control promptly and slow or stop the car. Autosteer’s lane-following assistance does not remove responsibility for the vehicle’s path, clearance, or speed. It is intended for conditions in which the lane path is suitable, not for replacing deliberate low-speed steering in a confined space.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteUsing Autopark when the car offers it
Autopark availability and behavior vary with region, vehicle configuration, equipment, manufacture date, and software. Tesla warns in its Model S Autopark manual: “Never depend on Autopark to find a parking space that is legal, suitable, and safe.” Treat the feature as assistance that can control the maneuver only after you have judged the space and surroundings.
What Autopark can detect
When the feature is available, the manual gives a speed threshold of below 8 mph (13 km/h) for detecting potential perpendicular and parallel spaces. Staying below that threshold does not guarantee detection. The car must also be able to identify a suitable space and determine a path; obstruction, visibility, weather, surface markings, neighboring vehicles, and the specific vehicle software can affect the result.
Detection is not a legal or safety certification. You still need to decide whether the space is large enough, whether entering it is permitted, and whether a person or object is likely to cross the path. If the display does not show a suitable option, reposition only when you can do so safely, select another space, or complete the maneuver yourself.
Typical Autopark flow
- Drive slowly past the area. Keep watching the road, the space, and pedestrians while the vehicle looks for a potential parallel or perpendicular space.
- Wait for a detected option on the touchscreen. If no suitable space appears, do not assume the system will park safely anyway.
- Select the space with the right scroll wheel. Follow the on-screen indication for the space you want.
- Press the right scroll button. The display will provide the next instruction. When ready to let Autopark steer, release the yoke as directed by the screen.
- Monitor the entire maneuver. Keep looking around the vehicle, watch the touchscreen, and remain ready to press the brake. Wait for the completion message before treating the parking sequence as finished.
What cancels Autopark
Autopark can cancel if you press the brake, shift, manually move the yoke, or use other listed controls. Cancellation is not a failure to be corrected by forcing the system to continue. Stop, reassess the space, and either reposition and try again when the display permits, choose another space, or park manually.

Auto Shift (Beta) for direction changes
Some Model S vehicles have Auto Shift (Beta), which the Tesla shifting manual says may assist with multi-point turns, parallel parking, and reversing from a parking spot. It is disabled by default and may be unavailable depending on configuration and software.
If your car offers it, confirm the selected drive mode and follow the display prompts before accelerating. Auto Shift can simplify a direction change, but it does not decide whether the path is clear and does not transfer responsibility for braking or observation. If the displayed mode is not the one you expect, keep the brake applied and correct the selection before moving. Treat every automatic direction suggestion as something to verify, not as permission to move without looking.
Manual parking versus available assistance
| Consideration | Manual maneuver | Autopark |
|---|---|---|
| Control | You choose speed, steering, direction changes, and when to stop. | The system maneuvers after you select a detected space and follow the prompts. |
| Availability | Available whenever you can legally and safely drive the car. | Depends on region, equipment, vehicle configuration, manufacture date, and software. |
| Space and path | You can stop and choose another approach when the space is unsuitable. | The car may fail to detect a space or calculate a path; repositioning or manual parking may then be necessary. |
| Driver responsibility | You continuously judge clearance and control the car. | You must visually confirm the space, monitor the vehicle and touchscreen, and be ready to brake throughout. |
| Cancellation | Stop, select the required direction, and reassess whenever the path changes. | Brake input, shifting, manual yoke movement, and other listed controls can cancel the sequence. |
Manual control is the predictable fallback when a space is poorly marked, the path is too tight, or assistance is unavailable. Autopark can reduce steering workload in a detected space, but it adds a prompt-and-monitoring process and may stop if conditions change. In either case, the safe choice is the one that leaves you able to stop before contact.
What to do when a maneuver goes wrong
The car turns too wide
Stop before the outer front corner reaches an obstacle. Select a safer position or use a multi-point correction in a wider area. Do not accelerate to complete the arc.
The rear swings toward a curb or vehicle
Stop, check the rear and opposite front corner, and change direction only after confirming a clear path. A camera image is useful for confirmation but cannot reveal every low or obscured object.
Autosteer is not following the corner
Take control immediately, because Tesla specifically warns that steering is limited and tight turns may not be handled. Continue manually at a speed that allows an immediate stop.

Autopark cannot find or complete a space
Drive away from the area, reposition if there is adequate clearance, or select another space. If the system cancels, remain stopped while you determine whether to retry or park manually. Never treat repeated detection attempts as evidence that a space is safe.
The touchscreen shows an unexpected drive mode
Keep the brake applied, verify the selected mode, and follow the display prompt before accelerating. This is especially important when Auto Shift (Beta) is enabled.
You lose confidence in the path
Stop, keep the car secured with the brake, and reassess from the driver’s seat or from a safer vantage point when permitted. A deliberate reset is preferable to continuing through a blind corner. If there is not enough room to create a clear next path, leave the area and choose a wider route.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which steering-weight setting is best for parking a Model S with a yoke?
Tesla says Light reduces the effort needed to turn and makes the car easier to drive and park in town. Standard is Tesla’s preferred balance for most conditions, while Heavy requires more effort and is described as more responsive at higher speeds. Choose the setting while stationary; no setting changes the car’s turning radius.
Does Tesla recommend a specific hand-over-hand technique for the yoke?
The Model S manual does not prescribe a hand-over-hand, shuffling, crossing, or spinning sequence. Use a movement that preserves continuous control and allows an immediate correction. Do not release the yoke in a way that compromises control.

Can I use Autosteer for a sharp garage or parking-aisle turn?
You should not rely on it. Tesla states that steering is limited when Autosteer is enabled and the Model S may not handle tight turns. Keep your hands on the yoke, monitor the surroundings, and be ready to take control.

How fast should I drive for Autopark to detect a space?
Tesla gives a detection threshold below 8 mph (13 km/h) for potential parallel and perpendicular spaces. That speed does not guarantee detection; the vehicle must also identify a suitable space and path.
Is Autopark responsible for checking whether a space is safe or legal?
No. Tesla says never to depend on Autopark to find a space that is legal, suitable, and safe. Visually confirm the space, check the surroundings throughout, monitor the touchscreen, and remain ready to brake.
What actions cancel Autopark?
Pressing the brake, shifting, manually moving the yoke, and other listed controls can cancel the sequence. If it cancels, stop and either reposition when safe, choose another space, or park manually.
Why might my Model S not show Autopark?
Availability and behavior depend on region, vehicle configuration, equipment, manufacture date, and software. Your car may not support the feature or may not detect a suitable space in the current conditions.
What is Auto Shift (Beta) useful for in a tight parking maneuver?
Tesla says it may assist with multi-point turns, parallel parking, and reversing from a parking spot. It is disabled by default and may be unavailable. Confirm the displayed drive mode and follow the prompts before accelerating; you remain responsible for clearance and braking.
The Bottom Line
For a yoke-equipped Model S, slow manual control is the dependable method for tight turns: set steering weight while stopped, keep a controlled grip, scan every corner, and use a multi-point correction when necessary. Autosteer may not handle a tight radius. Autopark and Auto Shift (Beta) can assist only when your vehicle offers them and the display conditions are met; they never replace visual checks or readiness to brake.
