How to Pair a Sena Helmet or Headset with Bluetooth: Model-Specific Steps

Sena pairing varies by model. Identify your unit, enter the right Bluetooth mode, connect the phone, then troubleshoot audio, app and intercom separately.

To pair a Sena with a phone, put the communicator into its model-specific Phone Pairing mode, then select its name in the phone’s Bluetooth settings. The button sequence is not universal: a 50R, 50S, 60S, 5S and OUTRUSH R do not all enter pairing mode the same way. First identify your exact model, then follow its current manual. Pairing a phone is also different from connecting the Sena app, a GPS, an action camera or another rider’s headset.

Identify the exact Sena model first

“Sena helmet” can mean a smart helmet with its communication system built in, or a removable Sena communicator mounted to a helmet. Controls and pairing modes vary between products and sometimes between guide revisions. Check the label on the unit or helmet, the original packaging, or the Sena app. Then open the matching 50S, 50R, 60S, 5S or OUTRUSH R support page and use its current manual. For other models—including older SMH, 20S and 30K units—use the product-specific guide rather than borrowing another model’s button instructions. Sena’s Device Manager documentation also covers a range of legacy products.

Model Phone-pairing reference
50R With the unit off, hold Center and (+) for 3 seconds. Alternating red and blue lights indicate pairing mode. Select Sena 50R on the phone. See the 50R quick guide.
50S Use the 50S Phone Pairing procedure in its menu; do not select GPS or intercom pairing by mistake. The 50S guide describes separate pairing modes.
60S The 60S enters phone-pairing mode automatically on first power-up and after rebooting from a factory reset. Pressing a button cancels that pairing mode. See the 60S guide.
OUTRUSH R The indexed 2.0.0 guide says to hold Center for 10 seconds until the “Phone pairing” prompt, then select Sena OUTRUSH R. An earlier guide gives a different sequence, so check the guide revision for your helmet: 2.0.0 guide and 1.2.0 guide.
5S Use the 5S-specific manual for the pairing controls. Its support page provides model-specific firmware and recovery information; firmware availability can depend on the unit’s part number.

These are references, not interchangeable instructions. If a voice prompt or control behavior differs, stop and follow the current guide for your exact unit and revision.

Before you pair

  1. Charge the Sena and keep it close to the phone.
  2. Turn on Bluetooth on the phone. Temporarily turn Bluetooth off on other nearby phones or devices that may reconnect to the Sena.
  3. Check the phone’s audio connections. If it is already connected to another headset, disconnect that headset for setup.
  4. Use the correct pairing mode. Phone, second-phone, GPS, camera and intercom modes may be separate.
  5. Keep the model manual open. Some pairing modes time out; older OUTRUSH documentation, for example, specifies a three-minute phone-pairing window.

Do the setup while stationary, not while riding. If the unit has been unstable or is newly purchased, check its support page for current firmware and update instructions. Sena’s 50-series support pages describe app and firmware pathways, while the 5S page includes Device Manager and model-specific recovery information.

Pair a Sena with a phone

  1. Power on the Sena, unless the model’s instructions require it to be off to enter pairing mode.
  2. Enter Phone Pairing mode using the exact sequence in the model’s guide. Wait for the stated light pattern or voice prompt.
  3. Open Bluetooth settings on the phone. On iPhone, open Settings > Bluetooth; on Android, open Settings > Connected devices or Bluetooth. Names may vary by phone manufacturer and operating-system version.
  4. Select the Sena’s device name, such as Sena 50S, Sena 50R or Sena OUTRUSH R. If several Sena devices appear, identify yours before selecting one.
  5. Enter a PIN only if prompted. For applicable models, the PIN is 0000; many phones do not ask for one. The 50S guide documents the PIN for its pairing procedures.
  6. Confirm the connection. Test media audio, a navigation prompt and a call or voice assistant while stationary. Make sure the phone is routing sound to the Sena rather than another Bluetooth device.

“Paired” and “connected” are different. Pairing saves the devices’ relationship; connecting establishes an active link. A phone may list a saved Sena even when it is not currently connected.

Pair the Sena app separately

Bluetooth audio and the Sena Motorcycles App are related but distinct connections. A phone can play music through the headset even if the app has not detected it.

  1. Install the official Sena Motorcycles App for a model that supports it.
  2. Turn on the Sena and complete phone Bluetooth pairing if the model’s instructions call for it.
  3. Open the app, select the detected device and grant the Bluetooth permissions it requests.
  4. Use only the controls and update options supported for your model. App features and firmware-update methods differ by product.

Sena’s 50S and 50R support pages describe app-based configuration; the 60S page documents OTA firmware updates through the app. An app connection is not guaranteed merely because Bluetooth audio works.

Connect a second phone, GPS or action camera

Do not use ordinary phone pairing as a catch-all. Select the special pairing mode named in your Sena manual for the device you want to add. The 50S guide separates mobile-phone, second-mobile-phone, GPS, intercom and other Bluetooth-device procedures. A GPS may have its own pairing mode; an action camera is supported only on certain models. Sena’s 60S support page includes pairing material for an Insta360 camera, but that does not establish camera compatibility for every Sena.

Also distinguish devices the Sena remembers from devices it can use simultaneously. The 60S can pair with multiple devices, including two mobile phones and a GPS, but its guide limits how many additional devices can be connected alongside a mobile phone at once. Check your model’s manual before planning a multi-device setup.

Connect to another rider

Headset-to-headset communication is not phone pairing. Use Bluetooth intercom pairing for compatible Sena units, or Mesh if both the model and the intended group setup support it. Mesh is a product feature, not something every Bluetooth helmet can join.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a non-Sena headset, a Sena model with Universal Intercom may be able to connect through Bluetooth intercom. The non-Sena unit must be placed in its own hands-free pairing mode. Sena’s Universal Intercom instructions describe the process, but compatibility and functionality vary. Cross-brand intercom should not be assumed to provide native Mesh, full multi-way operation, or identical range and reconnection behavior. Check both manufacturers’ manuals.

Troubleshoot by symptom

What happens What to check Next step
The Sena does not appear in Bluetooth settings Wrong mode, pairing mode timed out, unit already connected to another phone, or incorrect device name. Disconnect other nearby phones, re-enter the exact Phone Pairing mode and search again. If the guide requires the Sena to be off first, follow that instruction.
The phone sees it but pairing fails An old saved entry, an existing connection or an interrupted pairing attempt. On the phone, choose Forget This Device or Unpair for the old Sena entry. Restart both devices, then enter the correct pairing mode and try again. Enter 0000 only if asked.
Audio works but the app cannot find the Sena App permissions, app state, another phone’s connection or a model/app compatibility issue. Check the app’s Bluetooth permissions, close and reopen it, disconnect other phones and remove duplicate entries. Confirm the model is supported by that app and update it and the Sena firmware where applicable.
The app sees the Sena but an update fails Low battery, interrupted connection, permission restrictions or an update method not intended for that model. Charge the unit, keep the connection stable and follow the support page’s update method. Some models also offer a computer-based updater.
The Sena connects but there is no sound Phone or headset volume, output routed elsewhere, paused or muted media, or a source-specific audio setting. Check both volumes and the phone’s active audio output. Check the navigation app’s audio settings and whether an intercom or another connected device is taking priority.
Calls work, but music does not Media audio disabled for the Sena in phone settings, another connection taking priority, or model-specific audio behavior. Open the Sena’s Bluetooth device settings on the phone and check media audio. Disconnect other devices and review the model’s guide and firmware notes; audio multitasking behavior is not identical across models.
Two headsets will not communicate Phone pairing used instead of intercom pairing, a Mesh/Bluetooth mismatch, or unsupported cross-brand behavior. Identify the intended communication mode and verify that both units support it. For a non-Sena unit, check Universal Intercom instructions and the other headset’s hands-free pairing procedure.

When to reset—and when not to

A factory reset is a later recovery step, not the first response to a missing music stream. It can erase saved pairings, so you will need to pair devices again. First forget the stale phone entry, restart both devices and retry in the correct mode. If that fails, check for a firmware update and use the exact reset procedure in the model guide. Sena’s 5S support workflow recommends updating, resetting if needed and pairing again. Do not apply a reset sequence from another model.

Quick pre-ride checklist

  • Exact Sena model and current manual identified.
  • Phone paired in Phone Pairing mode—not GPS or intercom mode.
  • Phone actively connected and routing audio to the Sena.
  • Music, navigation and microphone tested while stopped.
  • App permissions and app connection checked separately if needed.
  • Other devices and riders connected using the model’s appropriate pairing mode.

If you still cannot pair after removing old entries, restarting, following the exact model procedure and updating or resetting as its support page directs, consult Sena support for that product. A new communicator is not automatically the fix for a pairing problem; incorrect mode selection and phone-side routing are common causes.
