At the dealership, require a written price and description for each add-on, decline anything you did not choose, and compare every contract number with your quote before signing.
What is the out-the-door price?
The out-the-door (OTD) price is the total amount to buy the vehicle before financing. It includes the negotiated vehicle price, taxes, and fees. Asking for this number in writing prevents a dealer from attracting you with a low advertised price and adding charges when you arrive.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
Request the OTD price for a specific vehicle identified by stock number or vehicle identification number (VIN). Ask the dealer to list every line item rather than sending only a monthly-payment estimate. A useful written quote shows:

- Optional products or services, shown separately at zero if declined.
- The quote’s expiration date, if the dealer sets one.

Before you visit: build comparable written offers
Ask every dealer for the same vehicle and the same terms
Send the same request to several dealers. Include the stock number or VIN, your ZIP code, whether you have a trade-in, and whether you qualify for any advertised incentive. Ask for the OTD price with taxes and fees included, plus an itemized list of charges. A quote for a different trim, equipment package, mileage, or condition is not a meaningful comparison.
Confirm that the vehicle is physically available. Ask the dealer to put any promised discount, rebate, accessory removal, or other offer in writing. An advertised price may depend on eligibility for military, college-graduate, loyalty, or dealer-financing incentives; ask which assumptions apply to you.
Use a comparison worksheet
| Comparison item | Dealer A | Dealer B | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vehicle price | Written amount | Written amount | Same VIN or identical equipment and condition |
| Required fees | Each fee and amount | Each fee and amount | Purpose, whether dealer-required, and local government charges |
| Taxes and government charges | Written amount | Written amount | Correct registration address and tax treatment |
| Optional add-ons | Declined or itemized | Declined or itemized | Coverage, exclusions, cancellation terms, and total price |
| OTD total before financing | Total | Total | No unexplained line items |
| APR and term | Written offer | Written offer | Same loan amount and term when comparing |
| Amount financed and total paid | Written amount | Written amount | Includes interest and financed products |
Arrange financing before negotiating payment
Seek a pre-approval from a bank or credit union before discussing dealership financing. A pre-approval gives you an APR and term to use as a benchmark. Dealership financing may offer several options, but it is not necessarily the best deal for every buyer.

A longer term can make a payment look smaller while increasing interest and the total amount paid. Keep the vehicle price and financing as separate decisions until you know both.
Are these dealer fees required?
What federal guidance says about advertised prices
The Federal Trade Commission’s Automobile Industry Pricing Transparency: FAQs says a fee the dealer requires you to pay to purchase the car must be included in the advertised price. The stated exception is a government-required charge that you must pay directly to a federal, state, or local agency.
The FTC FAQ also addresses charges that are easy to mislabel. A government may authorize a fee without requiring the consumer to pay it directly; a dealer-required charge can still need to appear in the advertised price. Likewise, a government may require the dealer to pay a charge that the dealer passes through to consumers. The dealer cannot use the word “government” by itself to make an otherwise dealer-required charge disappear from the advertised price.
This federal guidance concerns advertising and deceptive-practices principles. It does not create one nationwide cap for documentation, processing, filing, or similar fees. State and local rules can differ, and the material available here does not establish a universal cancellation right or a specific state fee limit.

Ask what an unfamiliar fee pays for
For every fee you do not recognize, ask three questions: What service or obligation does it represent? Is the dealer requiring it to sell this vehicle? Where was it disclosed in the advertisement and written quote? Request the answer in writing. Compare the explanation with your state’s official consumer-protection or motor-vehicle guidance if the amount or legality remains uncertain.
A fee can be negotiable even when it is not illegal. You can ask the dealer to reduce the vehicle price by the same amount, remove a non-required charge, or match a competing OTD offer. Do not claim that every dealer fee is unlawful or that every state treats it identically.
When a dealer says a fee or product is mandatory
Ask the dealer to identify the source of the requirement and to show the item separately in the quote and contract. The FTC says a dealer may not falsely describe an optional item as required, claim an installed option cannot be removed when it can, misstate its cost, or charge for an option you did not agree to. If the dealer will not provide a clear written explanation, pause the transaction and take your written offers elsewhere.
Can I say no to dealer add-ons?
Yes. Products such as GAP policies, window or VIN etching, service contracts, extended warranties, and rustproofing are optional products or services in the FTC consumer guidance. You can usually buy the vehicle without them, and many can be purchased later or from an independent provider. A dealer must not charge you for an add-on you did not agree to.

Request a separate written price for every add-on
Before visiting, ask the dealer to list each proposed product, its price, and what it covers. At the dealership, request the contract or product form showing:
- The exact product name and provider.
- Coverage, exclusions, deductibles, duration, mileage limits, and claim procedures.
- Whether the product is cancellable, transferable, or refundable under its terms.
- The cash price and the extra amount you would pay if it is financed.
- Whether you can purchase equivalent coverage later or elsewhere.
Ask, “What exactly does this cover?” “What is excluded or limited?” “What is the total price?” and “How much will this add to my total loan cost?” A product that costs $1,000 in cash costs more when interest is charged over the life of the loan.
Common add-ons and questions to ask
| Add-on | Questions before accepting |
|---|---|
| GAP policy or insurance | When does it pay, what exclusions apply, and does your existing auto insurer or lender offer it for less? |
| Window or VIN etching | Is the etching already installed, what benefit is provided, and can you decline it without changing the vehicle price? |
| Service contract or extended warranty | Which components are covered, who authorizes repairs, what deductibles and exclusions apply, and where can repairs be performed? |
| Rustproofing or protection package | What treatment is applied, how long does it last, what maintenance is required, and what remedy is available if it fails? |
Do not accept a package merely because the salesperson says it is already on the vehicle. Ask whether it can be removed, credited, or declined. If the dealer says an option cannot be removed, ask for the basis of that statement and have the claim reflected in writing.

How do I negotiate a dealer fee?
- Start with the written OTD offer. Tell the dealer you are comparing the total price before financing, not a monthly payment. Identify the competing OTD amount and the vehicle details behind it.
- Separate required charges from optional products. Ask the dealer to label each line as a government charge, dealer-required fee, or optional add-on. Request removal of products you did not choose.
- Challenge unexplained or duplicated fees. Ask what each charge covers and whether it already appears elsewhere. A duplicate electronic-filing, preparation, protection, or accessory charge should be explained before you proceed.
- Make one clear counteroffer. You can propose a lower vehicle price, removal of a dealer-required fee, or an OTD total that matches a competing written offer. Keep the request in writing by email or text.
- Confirm the revised quote. Have the dealer send an updated itemized OTD price. Do not rely on a verbal promise that a fee will be removed later.
- Only then compare financing. Use the same negotiated vehicle price and down payment when comparing APR, term, amount financed, and total paid.
Negotiation is strongest when you can leave. If a dealer refuses to identify charges, changes the vehicle or assumptions, or insists that unwanted products are mandatory, keep your written offer and contact another dealer.
Compare financing by APR and total cost
Once the OTD price is settled, compare financing offers using all of these figures:
- APR: the annual percentage rate, including the cost of credit.
- Loan length: the number of monthly payments.
- Amount financed: the amount borrowed after down payment, trade-in credit, taxes, fees, and financed products.
- Total of payments: what you will pay over the entire loan, including interest.
- Negotiated vehicle price: the price before financing changes the comparison.
A lower monthly payment can result from a longer term, a larger down payment, or products rolled into the loan. Compare offers only after matching the amount financed and term. If one offer includes a service contract or GAP product and another does not, remove the product or show it separately before deciding.
Ask whether the quoted APR is conditional on using the dealer’s lender or accepting an add-on. If you have a pre-approval, tell the dealer the APR and term you can obtain and ask whether it can beat that offer without changing the OTD price.
What should I check before signing a car contract?
Take time to read every page
Read the purchase agreement, retail installment contract, add-on forms, arbitration provisions, cancellation language, and any “we owe” or due-bill document. If an electronic signing screen does not show the terms clearly, ask for a printed copy or request that the dealer slow down. You do not have to sign while a salesperson rushes you.
Reconcile the final documents with your quote
Use your written OTD offer as a checklist. Verify the following figures and terms line by line:
- VIN, vehicle description, mileage, and agreed condition.
- Vehicle selling price and every discount or rebate.
- Each tax, title, registration, and dealer fee.
- Every add-on, its price, and whether you accepted or declined it.
- Trade-in allowance, payoff amount, and down payment.
- APR, number of payments, payment amount, and loan length.
- Amount financed, finance charge, and total of payments.
Compare the final figures with the latest written quote, not with your memory of the conversation. Have unexplained charges and unwanted products removed before signing. The FTC’s consumer guidance recommends keeping a complete copy of the signed purchase and financing agreements.

- Request a corrected contract and updated payment disclosure.
- Do not sign a document that contains a fee or add-on you did not approve.
- If the dealer will not correct it, leave with your documents and consider reporting deceptive conduct to the appropriate state or federal consumer-protection agency.
What the 2024 FTC dealership alert means for buyers
In an August 2024 consumer alert concerning three Asbury Automotive dealerships, the FTC said a survey found that as many as 75 percent of customers reported being charged for add-on products and services they had not authorized or being falsely told those products were required. That figure describes the dealerships and survey discussed in that case; it is not an estimate for all dealers or all car buyers.
FTC Bureau of Consumer Protection Director Samuel Levine said in the announcement: “The FTC will continue to crack down on illegal hidden fees and discrimination, which have no place at car dealerships.” The practical lesson is to require explicit agreement for every add-on and to compare the final paperwork with the offer you received before signing.
Used-car transactions: add inspections to your checklist
For a used vehicle, negotiation over fees does not replace a mechanical inspection. FTC used-car guidance recommends an inspection and says a written estimate can help inform negotiation. Arrange an independent inspection when possible, and make the purchase conditional on the result if the dealer agrees in writing.
Keep inspection costs and mechanical repairs separate from dealer add-ons. An inspection addresses the vehicle’s condition; GAP, etching, service contracts, and rustproofing are separate products with their own prices and terms.

Common mistakes that increase the final cost
- Negotiating from a monthly payment instead of the OTD price.
- Comparing quotes for different vehicles or different rebate assumptions.
- Accepting a verbal promise to remove a fee or add-on later.
- Assuming every charge labeled “government” must be paid directly to an agency.
- Ignoring the cost of financing an add-on over the loan term.
- Signing electronically without seeing the complete contract.
- Leaving without copies of the purchase and financing documents.
- Assuming federal guidance sets a uniform documentation-fee cap or cancellation right in every state.
When to walk away
Stop the transaction if the dealer will not provide an itemized OTD quote, changes the vehicle or assumptions without disclosure, refuses to explain a fee, charges for a declined product, or pressures you to sign documents you cannot review. A competing written offer and the ability to leave are more useful than arguing over an unexplained line item.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the out-the-door price?
It is the vehicle’s total purchase price before financing, including the negotiated vehicle price, taxes, and fees. Request it in writing with every charge itemized.
Can I say no to dealer add-ons?
Yes. GAP policies, etching, service contracts, extended warranties, and rustproofing are examples of optional products. Ask for their prices and terms, then decline products you do not want.
Recommended Free Tools
How do I negotiate a dealer fee?
Ask what the fee covers, whether the dealer requires it, and where it appeared in the advertisement and quote. Compare the complete OTD total with another written offer and request a revised quote before signing.
Does federal guidance set a national documentation-fee cap?
No. FTC guidance addresses advertised pricing and deceptive descriptions of required or optional charges; it does not establish one nationwide cap or resolve every state’s cancellation and fee rules.
What should I check before signing a car contract?
Match the contract with your written quote: vehicle price, taxes, each fee, add-ons, down payment, APR, term, amount financed, and total payments. Have discrepancies corrected and keep complete copies.
