If a new raised median blocks your usual left turn or crossing, do not drive over it, through an unsigned gap, or around its end. Slow down, read the signs and pavement arrows, stay in the permitted lane, and continue to a signed intersection or median opening. Some roads use a downstream median U-turn: you pass the destination, turn around at a marked opening, then turn right onto the street you wanted. That sequence is legal only when the local signs, markings, signals, and traffic law show that it is the intended movement.
What to do immediately when the median blocks your normal route
- Reduce speed and scan ahead. A newly built median may be accompanied by temporary signs, cones, altered lane lines, or a new signal phase. Read every sign and arrow before choosing a lane.
- Follow the marked lane. Enter the lane indicated for your destination or for the next permitted turn. Do not change lanes across a solid line or at the last moment simply because the old entrance is no longer available.
- Do not cross, mount, or bypass the median. A raised island is a physical separation designed to prevent particular movements. Driving over it can damage the vehicle, create a conflict with opposing traffic, and violate a posted restriction or local law.
- Continue to the next legal decision point. Use a signed median opening, signalized intersection, or another access point shown by the roadway controls. If you pass the desired street, continue rather than stopping or reversing in a travel lane.
- Recheck the destination entrance. A business, neighborhood, or side street may now be reachable only from the opposite direction or through a different driveway. Follow the entrance signs visible from the legal approach.
The median itself does not tell you whether a left turn, U-turn, or driveway movement is allowed. The complete arrangement—signs, arrows, signals, curb or island shape, and local law—does.

Why a raised median changes your trip
It separates opposing traffic
A raised median is a constructed island or barrier between directions of travel. Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) guidance describes this type of treatment as a way to preclude across-roadway movements. Depending on its length and openings, it can stop a driver from crossing to the opposite side, turning left into a side street, entering a driveway from the through lane, or continuing straight from a side road.

It does not provide a universal detour
Two roads can have similar-looking medians but completely different legal routes. One may have a signed opening for left turns; another may require a right turn followed by a later U-turn; a third may prohibit U-turns and require a different intersection. FHWA traffic-calming material identifies median barriers and forced-turn islands as physical restrictions, but the design alone does not specify the route at an unidentified location.

Access and mobility are design trade-offs
FHWA describes median decisions as a balance between overall safety and mobility and the access needs of adjacent properties. The result can add distance or travel time for an individual driver while reducing selected crossing conflicts along the corridor. Treat the extra distance as part of the planned road layout, not as permission to improvise a shortcut.
Read the controls at the exact location
In the United States, the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) supplies national standards and guidance for traffic-control devices. FHWA’s general MUTCD FAQ explains that state and local highway agencies select, install, operate, and maintain devices on public roads. Those local controls govern your movement at the site.
| What you see | What it can indicate | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Turn arrow or lane-use sign | The lane has a permitted or required movement. | Enter that lane early enough to make the indicated turn; do not substitute a different movement. |
| “No Left Turn” or “No U-Turn” sign | The displayed movement is prohibited at that point. | Continue to the next signed option. |
| Marked median opening | A designed crossing or turning point may be available. | Use it only for the movement shown by signs, arrows, and signals. |
| Solid lane line, channelizing island, or barrier nose | Crossing or lane changing is restricted at that segment. | Remain in the lawful lane until a permitted transition. |
| Temporary construction sign or altered barricade | The permanent pattern may be changed for work. | Give the temporary control priority and follow the current marked route. |
| No sign, arrow, or opening that clearly authorizes the maneuver | The permission is uncertain. | Do not assume the gap is legal; proceed to a controlled location or obtain clarification from the road agency. |
A visible break in concrete or landscaping is not automatically an authorized turning point. Look for the associated markings and signs, and obey the signal indication when one is present.
Common road layouts and how to use them
Direct left-turn opening
Some medians contain openings aligned with a signalized intersection or a marked left-turn lane. Approach in the lane shown by the arrow, wait for the applicable signal, and complete the turn without entering an opposing through lane. If the opening serves only one direction or one approach, do not infer that every movement is allowed there.
Median U-turn treatment
FHWA describes a median U-turn treatment in which a driver who wants to turn left at an intersection first continues through the intersection, makes a U-turn at a downstream median opening, and then turns right at the cross street. This is an example of an engineered corridor—not a universal rule for every raised median.

- Approach the original intersection in the through lane or other lane identified by the signs.
- Continue past the cross street if the layout directs left-turning traffic to a downstream opening.
- Enter the marked U-turn opening only when the signal, sign, and pavement markings authorize it and a safe gap is available.
- After turning around, travel back toward the cross street in the proper direction.
- Turn right at the destination street, following its signal and lane arrows.
A U-turn opening can be farther away than the street you missed. Never make the maneuver from an unmarked gap, across a closed island, or where a “No U-Turn” sign applies.
Forced right turn from a side street
A side street may meet a raised median in a way that blocks a direct left turn or straight crossing. The island can require a right turn onto the main road, followed by a later legal turn or U-turn. Follow the side-street stop or yield control, merge only where permitted, and use the next signed access point.

On some corridors there is no nearby opening. The lawful route may require continuing to a different intersection, turning around there, and approaching the destination from the other direction. If the destination has multiple entrances, use the one that is signed for your current approach rather than crossing the median to reach a familiar driveway.
How to choose among several legal routes
When more than one route is available, compare the options in this order:
- Authorization: Eliminate any route that conflicts with a sign, signal, lane arrow, solid line, barrier, or local restriction.
- Road geometry: Prefer the route that avoids a last-second lane change, a tight turn, or a U-turn where the opening is difficult to see.
- Interaction with people walking or cycling: Check every crossing and turning conflict at the alternative intersection. FHWA’s median-U-turn discussion concerns vehicle conflict patterns, but conditions at a particular site still require attention to all road users.
- Added distance and time: Once the movement is legal and practical, choose the opening or intersection that adds the least reasonable travel.
- Destination access: Confirm that the entrance is reachable from that direction. A shorter route to the street name may still leave you unable to enter the property.
| Route choice | Advantages | Costs or cautions |
|---|---|---|
| Signed opening at the same intersection | Usually the most direct approach when fully marked. | May serve only selected approaches or turning movements. |
| Downstream median U-turn | Preserves access without crossing the median at the original intersection. | Adds distance and another turn; requires a clearly authorized opening and careful lane positioning. |
| Next signalized intersection | Provides a controlled place to change direction. | Can add substantial time and may require additional lane changes. |
| Alternate destination entrance | May avoid a U-turn and return trip. | The entrance may be one-way, restricted, or difficult to identify from the new approach. |
For an unspecified road, no source can identify which option is shortest. The signs and markings at that corridor determine the answer.

Planning before you drive the redesigned road
Expect the first trip to take longer
A new median can make a familiar route feel wrong even when the road is operating as designed. Leave additional time, especially during the first trips after construction. The extra margin lets you pass an unexpected turn without braking abruptly or making an illegal maneuver.
Review the route without relying on an assumed opening
A mapping service may not immediately reflect a newly built median, temporary traffic pattern, or local U-turn restriction. Use it as a planning aid, then verify the physical signs and markings. Do not treat a map’s suggested left turn as authority to cross a raised island.
Know the destination’s approach
If you are visiting a business, school, medical facility, or neighborhood, identify whether its entrance is on the near side or far side of the divided road. A second entrance may be signed from the opposite direction, while the familiar driveway may now be right-in or right-out only.
What to do if you miss the intended opening
- Continue straight in your lane until the next lawful turn or opening.
- Do not stop in a through lane, reverse, cross a painted island, or make a sudden turn across traffic.
- At the next controlled location, read the signs again before selecting a lane.
- If you are unsure whether a U-turn is permitted, choose a route that does not require one and approach the destination from another entrance.
- If the layout appears damaged, contradictory, or unsafe, report the condition to the responsible road agency when you can do so safely.
Temporary construction versus the permanent median
During construction, cones, temporary barriers, portable signs, and shifted lane lines can create a pattern that differs from the finished design. Temporary controls govern while they are in place. A gap that will eventually become an opening may be closed today, and a familiar turn may be temporarily prohibited. Follow the current devices rather than an old memory of the road or an outdated map.
When construction signs conflict with a remembered route, slow down, increase following distance, and allow other drivers time to merge. If a flagger or temporary signal is present, follow that direction. Do not move a barricade or drive through a closed work area to reach the old route.

Why agencies use median openings and U-turns
Raised medians can reduce certain direct crossing and left-turn conflicts by limiting where vehicles intersect. FHWA’s 2007 synthesis, FHWA-HRT-07-033, reported crash numbers at median U-turn intersections that were 20 to 50 percent lower than at comparable conventional intersections in the past research it reviewed. That range is a historical synthesis, not a promise for a particular newly redesigned road, intersection, or driver.
The same design can shift a maneuver downstream. Drivers may travel farther, make a U-turn, and then turn right instead of crossing opposing lanes at the original intersection. The safety and access result depends on the installed geometry, traffic controls, speeds, volumes, and surrounding land uses.
Who controls the signs and markings?
FHWA does not select the traffic-control devices for every local road. Its General Questions on the MUTCD FAQ states: “The individual State and local highway agencies (not the FHWA) select, install, operate, and maintain all traffic control devices on all public roadways (including the Interstate and the U.S. numbered systems) nationwide.”
For a project-specific question—such as why an entrance was closed, where the next legal U-turn is, or whether an opening will change—contact the state, county, city, or other agency responsible for that road. Provide the road name, nearest intersection, travel direction, and the sign or marking that is unclear. The agency can explain the approved configuration; a general driving guide cannot determine a location-specific route.

- Read signs and lane arrows before reaching the island nose.
- Keep both directions of traffic separated; never use the opposing lane as a shortcut.
- Do not mount a curb, drive across a raised island, or pass through a closed opening.
- Make lane changes early and only across permitted markings.
- Yield or stop as required at the intersection, opening, or U-turn signal.
- Scan for pedestrians and cyclists at every turning point and crosswalk.
- If uncertain, continue to a better-signed location instead of guessing.
- Do not use a phone while moving to search for a new route; pull over legally before consulting directions.
Worked examples
Your usual left turn is blocked
You approach the intersection and see a raised island, a through arrow in your lane, and signs directing left-turning traffic to a downstream opening. Continue through, follow the marked path to that opening, make the authorized U-turn, and return to turn right. If the opening has a “No U-Turn” sign or no lane marking for your direction, continue to the next legal intersection instead.

You see a gap but no markings
Do not treat the gap as permission. The opening may be for drainage, emergency access, construction, or the opposite direction. Stay on the marked route and use a signed intersection or opening.
The map still shows the old turn
Ignore the stale instruction at the physical road. Follow the current signs, signals, and arrows, then report the apparent map error to the mapping provider after you have reached a safe place. The road controls—not the map—define the permitted movement.
You are already in the wrong lane
Continue in that lane if it is lawful, then use the next opportunity to reroute. Do not cut across the median nose or cross a solid line at the last second. Missing one turn is safer than forcing it.

Bottom line for a new raised median
Use the route the road has marked, not the route you remember. A raised median may require a different intersection, a signed opening, or a downstream U-turn followed by a right turn. Because the exact legal movement depends on the site’s signs, signals, markings, design, and jurisdiction, never cross or bypass the median on assumption alone.
