To move off without stalling, coordinate the clutch and accelerator: find the clutch’s biting point, add appropriate accelerator, then release the clutch smoothly while checking that it is safe to move. The biting point varies by car, so learn the feel of the vehicle you are driving rather than aiming for a fixed pedal position or engine speed.
What the clutch’s biting point does
The biting point is where the clutch plate and flywheel come into firm contact and begin transmitting drive to the wheels. As you bring the clutch pedal up to this point, the car may start to feel as if it wants to move. That change in feel is your cue to coordinate the accelerator and clutch—not a signal to release the pedal abruptly.
There is no universal clutch position or engine-speed target for moving off. Pedal feel and vehicle response differ, so practise in the particular car with an instructor or supervising driver.
How to move off smoothly on level ground
- Prepare to move. Select first gear and make effective observations all around the car, including blind areas. Signal if appropriate, and move only when it is safe.
- Find the biting point. Raise the clutch gradually until you feel the car begin to take drive. Keep your attention on the surroundings as well as the controls.
- Coordinate the accelerator. Add appropriate accelerator as the clutch starts transmitting drive. Avoid treating any particular pedal position or engine speed as a rule for every car.
- Release the clutch smoothly. Continue bringing the clutch up in a controlled way as the car moves away. An abrupt release can interrupt the smooth transfer of drive and cause a stall.
The DVSA syllabus treats clutch-and-accelerator coordination, understanding what causes a stall, recovering from one, and moving off only when safe as parts of the same skill. Practise the sequence until you can manage the car without losing awareness of traffic and other road users.

Moving off on a hill
A gradient adds the need to prevent rollback while coordinating the clutch and accelerator. Keep the car under control, watch the traffic around you, and avoid excessive engine revolutions. Use the method taught by your instructor for the vehicle you are driving; the controls and any hill-assist feature or electronically operated parking brake can affect the procedure.
Hill-assist and electronic parking brakes do not remove the need to coordinate the clutch and accelerator or make proper observations. Follow the vehicle handbook and practise the system’s operation in a safe setting with supervision.

If the car stalls
Secure the vehicle, then restart when it is safe to do so. The right restart steps can differ between cars, so follow the vehicle handbook and your instructor’s method rather than relying on a single routine for every model. The DVSA standard expects drivers to recover quickly and safely after a stall.

Repeated stalls when moving off are identified by the DVSA as a common driving-test fault. Its guidance recommends practising the biting point with an instructor or supervising driver. Move-offs may be assessed from the roadside, on a gradient, from behind a parked vehicle, or at junctions; the important skill is to move away under control and only when safe.
