1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteMove a Dodge Viper by carrying it with all four wheels off the ground on a properly rated car trailer—not by having the Viper pull a trailer. The 2017 Dodge Viper SRT owner’s manual says trailer towing with the Viper is not recommended, yet its towing table lists transport “On Trailer / All / OK.” That distinction is decisive. Because the Viper’s bodywork sits low, choose a compatible trailer, control the loading angle, and secure the car only with attachment methods approved for the vehicle and the equipment.
What the Viper manual actually permits
The wording in the 2017 manual can look contradictory until “towing” and “transport on a trailer” are separated. In the “Trailer Towing” table, Dodge states: “Trailer towing with this vehicle is not recommended.” The same table lists “On Trailer / All / OK,” meaning the Viper may be carried on a trailer with all wheels off the ground. It does not authorize the Viper to pull a trailer.

| Question | What the 2017 manual establishes | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Can the Viper pull a trailer? | Trailer towing is not recommended. | It does not provide a permissible trailer weight or hitch setup. |
| Can the Viper be carried on a trailer? | “On Trailer / All / OK” is listed, with all wheels off the ground. | It does not name a trailer model, ramp angle, loading sequence, or tie-down route. |
| Where are the low-clearance areas? | The front and rear fascias and side sills ride low, and ground clearance is limited. | It does not give a universal clearance measurement or a guaranteed ramp angle. |
| Where should straps attach? | No Viper-specific tie-down points are specified in the reviewed sections. | Do not infer an attachment point from a nearby suspension, body, or trim component. |
Choose the trailer and equipment before you load
A safe move starts with the actual combination of Viper, trailer, tow vehicle, ramps, anchors, and restraints. A trailer that is large enough in length may still be unsuitable if its rated capacity, deck geometry, anchor layout, or approach angle does not fit the car.

Confirm capacity for the complete combination
- Check the trailer’s rated payload and make sure it covers the Viper plus any equipment carried on the deck.
- Check the tow vehicle’s permitted trailer weight, hitch rating, and tongue-weight limits in its documentation.
- Use the trailer manufacturer’s instructions for axle loading and load placement. The Viper manual does not supply a universal position on the deck.
- Verify that every strap, wheel net, chain, or other tiedown has a rated capacity suitable for the vehicle and is used in the manner its manufacturer specifies.
Compare clearance and anchor compatibility
Look at the transition from ground to ramp, the breakover point at the top of the ramp, and the point where the car leaves the deck. A trailer can have adequate payload capacity and still cause contact at a fascia or side sill. The manual does not prescribe a loading angle, so the correct approach depends on the trailer, ramp length, suspension height, tire size, and the particular Viper.
Inspect the trailer’s anchor locations before the car arrives. They must allow a restraint path that does not rub against painted surfaces, brake lines, wiring, tires, or moving suspension parts. If the trailer’s anchors cannot be reached without an improvised route, use different equipment rather than inventing a Viper attachment point.
Possible clearance aids
Longer low-angle ramps or ramp extensions can reduce the change in angle at the trailer’s edge. They are possible solutions, not Viper-mandated accessories and not a guarantee that every combination will clear. Confirm their load rating, locking method, and compatibility with the trailer before use. If a ramp or extension shifts, bends, or leaves a sharp transition, stop and select another setup.

Inspect the car
- Walk around the Viper and note the lowest points of the front fascia, rear fascia, and side sills.
- Check for existing damage and photograph it before loading. This gives you a reference if a clearance problem occurs.
- Verify tire condition and inflation using the vehicle’s documentation. A visibly low tire changes the car’s clearance and can alter how it sits on the deck.
- Remove loose items from the cabin, trunk, and exterior. Close and latch doors, hood, and trunk before the loading maneuver.
- Keep the ignition key available so the car can be moved a few inches at a time if the operator needs to stop and reposition.
Inspect the trailer and tow vehicle
- Confirm that the trailer is correctly coupled, its safety equipment is connected, and its tires, wheels, lights, and brakes are in serviceable condition.
- Check that ramps are fully seated and secured according to the trailer maker’s instructions.
- Identify the trailer’s rated anchor points and read the instructions for the exact restraint products you will use.
- Clear the loading path. Keep people, tools, and loose straps away from the wheels and ramp edges.
Use a level, stable surface when possible. A second trained person acting as a spotter is valuable because the driver cannot see both side sills and both ramp edges at the same time. The spotter should give one clear signal at a time and have authority to stop the maneuver.

Load the Viper without scraping
The low-clearance warning is the central loading issue. Dodge states that “The front and rear fascias and side sills ride low and ground clearance is limited” in the manual’s “Ground Clearance” section. Treat any contact as a failed setup, not as something to push through.
- Align the trailer. Place the tow vehicle and trailer on the flattest practical surface, straighten the trailer, and verify that the ramps are secure and aligned with the tires.
- Rehearse the path. With the engine off, walk the route and identify where the front fascia, side sills, and rear fascia will pass over the ground-to-ramp and ramp-to-deck transitions.
- Reduce the approach angle if necessary. Install only ramps or extensions that the trailer manufacturer permits and that are rated for the load. Recheck that they cannot slide or separate.
- Use a slow, controlled crawl. Have the driver make small inputs while the spotter watches both sides. Avoid momentum; speed can turn a light contact into structural or cosmetic damage.
- Stop at the first sign of contact. Do not add throttle, rock the car, or continue while a fascia or sill is touching. Reverse carefully, reassess the geometry, and change the ramp arrangement or trailer before trying again.
- Keep the car centered. Follow the trailer manufacturer’s lane and deck guidance so the tires remain on the intended running surfaces. Do not allow a tire to ride an edge or a ramp gap.
- Set the parking brake once positioned. Put the transmission in the setting specified by the vehicle and trailer instructions, then leave the car stationary while you prepare the restraints.
Because no universal Viper loading angle is published in the reviewed manual, a setup that works for one trailer or ride height may not work for another. Test the geometry with the actual car and equipment before committing to a long trip.
Position the car according to the trailer maker’s instructions
The Viper manual does not give a single deck position, axle location, or tongue-weight target for every trailer. Use the trailer manufacturer’s instructions and the tow vehicle’s limits to determine where the load belongs. The goal is to stay within the trailer’s axle and payload ratings while maintaining the tow vehicle’s permitted tongue weight; those values must come from the documentation for your equipment.
Once the Viper is in the approved position, verify that the doors, hood, and trunk can remain closed, that no body panel is touching the trailer, and that each planned restraint path remains clear. If moving the car a small distance would improve anchor alignment, do it before tightening anything.

Securement rules and what they mean for a Viper
Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration rules provide a useful benchmark, but their scope matters. Under the cited rule for covered commercial motor vehicles operating in interstate commerce, automobiles must be restrained at both the front and rear against lateral, forward, rearward, and vertical movement using a minimum of two tiedowns. See the FMCSA Cargo Securement Rules summary of § 393.128 and the agency’s cargo-securement applicability and general requirements.
That federal minimum is not a blanket description of every private trailer trip. Private transport can also be governed by state law, the trailer maker’s instructions, the restraint maker’s instructions, and insurance or event requirements. Determine which rules apply to your trip rather than assuming the commercial interstate rule is the only requirement.
| Securement principle | Practical meaning |
|---|---|
| Front and rear restraint | Restraints must control movement at both ends of the automobile under the cited FMCSA scope. |
| Four-direction control | The system must resist lateral, forward, rearward, and vertical movement. |
| Minimum quantity | The cited rule specifies at least two tiedowns for automobiles in its scope. |
| Structural attachment | A tiedown attached to the vehicle structure must use a mounting point designed for that purpose. |
| Wheel-over or wheel-around design | A tiedown made to fit over or around a wheel must restrain lateral, longitudinal, and vertical movement. |
The 2017 Viper manual does not identify Viper-specific mounting points or prescribe a strap route. Do not attach to a spoiler, fascia, side sill, exhaust component, brake line, suspension member, or other part merely because it is convenient. Use only a vehicle mounting point that the vehicle documentation identifies for securement, or use a wheel-based system whose manufacturer states that it is suitable for the tire and trailer arrangement.

A careful securement procedure
- Read both sets of instructions. Before tensioning anything, read the restraint manufacturer’s directions and the trailer manufacturer’s anchor and capacity requirements. Resolve conflicts before loading.
- Select the approved attachment method. Use only designed vehicle mounting points or a compatible wheel-over or wheel-around restraint. If you cannot establish that an attachment point is designed for the load, do not use it.
- Place restraints at the front and rear. Arrange the system so the car is controlled in all four directions required by the applicable rule. Keep straps clear of painted bodywork and moving or heat-producing components.
- Protect contact areas. Use only protective sleeves or edge treatment allowed by the restraint instructions. A strap that can rub on a sharp trailer edge or tire sidewall is not ready for travel.
- Tension evenly. Take slack out according to the restraint maker’s method without crushing a tire, distorting a wheel, or loading a body panel. Never substitute a higher tension for an incorrect anchor.
- Lock and secure excess material. Close the ratchet or other locking device fully and tie off loose strap ends so they cannot reach a tire, road surface, or hot component.
- Inspect the system from both sides. Confirm that every hook, net, chain, or fitting is fully engaged with the intended anchor and that the car has not shifted during tightening.
If the trailer’s anchor pattern cannot create a four-direction restraint without an improvised connection, stop. A different trailer or a different approved restraint system is safer than adapting hardware on the roadside.

Pre-departure and en-route checks
Before moving the tow vehicle
- Walk around the entire combination and compare the actual setup with the trailer and restraint instructions.
- Confirm that ramps, chocks, tools, and loose equipment are removed or secured.
- Verify that the Viper’s bodywork has clearance from the deck, anchors, straps, and trailer structure.
- Check that the trailer is within its ratings and that the tow vehicle remains within its permitted limits.
- Make sure lights, coupler connections, safety equipment, and trailer brakes (where fitted and required) are functioning.
After the first short distance
Stop in a safe location and recheck every restraint. A strap can settle, a wheel net can move, or a connection can reveal rubbing only after the combination has traveled. Inspect again whenever you stop for fuel or a break, and immediately after severe braking, a sharp maneuver, or an unusual noise.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Unloading without damaging the car
- Choose a suitable stopping area. Recreate the stable, controlled conditions used for loading and keep bystanders clear.
- Keep the car stationary while releasing restraints. Follow the restraint maker’s release sequence; do not stand in the path of a strap or fitting under tension.
- Reinstall and secure the ramps. Confirm that the ramp transition is the same one you evaluated during loading.
- Use a spotter again. Watch both side sills and the front and rear fascias as the car crosses each transition.
- Move slowly and stop for contact. If the geometry has changed because of the surface, temperature, tire pressure, or equipment position, stop and correct it before continuing.
- Inspect after the car is clear. Look for new marks on the fascias, side sills, tires, wheels, straps, and trailer before packing the equipment.
Common problems and the safe response
The front fascia touches the ramp
Stop immediately. Check whether the ramp transition is too abrupt, whether the ramp is too short, or whether the car’s clearance differs from what you expected. A longer compatible ramp or extension may reduce the angle, but it must be rated and secured according to its manufacturer. Do not solve contact by adding speed.
A side sill approaches a ramp edge
Stop and verify that the trailer and ramps are centered with the vehicle. A spotter should check both sides rather than judging from the driver’s seat. If the sill still cannot clear, the trailer geometry is unsuitable for that Viper configuration.

The trailer appears adequate but the car shifts during a check
Do not depart. Release and reset the system using the manufacturer’s instructions, check anchor engagement and restraint capacity, and confirm that the trailer’s deck position follows its loading guidance. A shift indicates that the current arrangement is not controlling the required directions.
The Viper is a different year or modified
Use the owner’s manual for that exact vehicle and configuration. Changes to ride height, tires, wheels, bodywork, or suspension can alter clearance and may change which securement methods are acceptable. The 2017 manual cannot silently stand in for every Viper.
How to compare possible trailer setups
| Factor | Questions to answer | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Vehicle and trailer capacity | Are payload, axle, hitch, and tongue-weight ratings sufficient for the actual car and equipment? | Capacity must be established from the relevant manufacturer documents, not estimated from deck size. |
| Approach and departure clearance | Can the front and rear transitions be crossed without contact? | The Viper’s low fascias and side sills make ramp geometry a primary selection criterion. |
| Anchor compatibility | Can approved front and rear restraints connect without rubbing or improvised attachment? | The Viper manual does not publish a universal tie-down route. |
| Restraint design and rating | Is the wheel-based or structural system rated and used exactly as directed? | Different systems control movement differently; capacity and method must match. |
| Applicable rules | Is the move private, commercial, interstate, or otherwise subject to specific state or federal requirements? | The cited FMCSA minimum applies only within its stated scope. |
There is no single trailer or tie-down product established as best for every Viper. The right choice is the combination whose capacity, clearance, anchor layout, restraint method, and legal requirements can all be documented for the specific trip.

Quick Recap
Key takeaways
- Carry the Viper on a trailer with all four wheels off the ground; do not use it to pull a trailer.
- Plan around the low front and rear fascias and side sills. The manual does not provide a universal ramp angle, so verify the actual geometry.
- Use only approved vehicle mounting points or a compatible wheel-over or wheel-around system; never guess at an attachment point.
- For automobiles covered by the cited FMCSA interstate-commercial rule, the minimum is two tiedowns restraining the front and rear against lateral, forward, rearward, and vertical movement.
- Check the exact Viper model-year manual and every trailer and restraint manufacturer’s instructions before departure.
