How to Measure Your Pickup Bed Before Buying a Truck Bed Camper

A “short bed” label is not enough to choose a truck camper. This guide shows exactly where to measure your pickup bed and how to compare the results with the camper’s mounting design, clearance requirements and payload guidance.

Measure the bed itself, not the “short bed” or “6-foot bed” label. Use a tape measure to record the inside floor length from the front bulkhead to the inside of the tailgate, the narrowest floor width (usually between the wheel wells), and the dimensions that match the camper’s mounting design. Then compare those numbers with the exact camper model, truck configuration and manufacturer fitment diagram. Finally, check cab clearance, tailgate position, overhang, tie-down access, center of gravity and payload separately. A bed can be large enough geometrically and still be unsuitable for a particular camper.

Why a marketed bed size is only a starting point

Pickup-bed names are convenient for shopping, but they are not a measurement standard. Lengths can change with cab style, wheelbase, trim package, bed construction and model year. Freedom Campers states in its truck camper fit guide: “Bed lengths vary by a couple of inches between trim packages, so measure yours before you order.” That difference can determine whether a camper floor clears the tailgate, whether a mounting point lines up or whether the camper’s center of gravity lands where the truck can safely carry it.

Do not use an exterior brochure dimension or a label such as “short bed” as your final fit check. Measure the usable interior of your particular truck with the bed in the configuration required by the camper maker. A camper designed to sit between the wheel wells is matched against a different width than one that sits above them or across the bed rails.

What to have ready before measuring

  • A retractable tape measure: A generic tape measure is sufficient for this task; no particular brand or precision rating has been established as necessary.
  • A note sheet or spreadsheet: Record each value in inches or millimetres, and use the same unit when reading the camper specification sheet.
  • The truck identification: Write down the model year, cab style, bed option, drivetrain if it affects the truck’s rating, and any bed liner, cap, platform or aftermarket rail hardware that will remain installed.
  • The camper’s fitment diagram: Obtain the exact model and floor plan, not just a series-level brochure. Note whether dimensions are for the camper body, its base, or a mounting platform.
  • A helper for long or overhead measurements: One person can hold the tape at the bulkhead while the other reads it at the tailgate or rail.

Park on level ground, lower or remove anything that changes the usable bed space, and open the tailgate unless the camper instructions specify another reference position. Keep the tape straight and parallel to the surface being measured. If a bed liner or mat will stay in place, measure with it installed and record its thickness or the reduced dimensions it creates.

Measure the inside floor length first

Where to place the tape

  1. Put the tape’s end against the inside face of the front bed wall, also called the bulkhead.
  2. Run the tape along the bed floor, parallel to the truck’s centerline.
  3. Measure to the inside face of the tailgate. Do not measure over the top of the tailgate or to the outside of the bed.
  4. Write down the result and the tailgate position used. Some campers require the tailgate closed, lowered or removed, so the reference point may change.

This is the floor length available to the camper base. If the bed floor has a step, taper, raised reinforcement, factory storage feature or a liner that prevents the camper from reaching the bulkhead, note that obstruction rather than assuming the nominal length remains usable.

Hotomobil identifies floor length as one of the minimum dimensions for basic matching. That does not mean length alone proves compatibility; it only establishes the first geometric comparison.

Find the narrowest floor width

Measure between the wheel wells when the base sits inside them

  1. Measure across the bed floor at its narrowest point, normally from the inside of one wheel well to the inside of the opposite wheel well.
  2. Keep the tape perpendicular to the truck’s centerline and at floor level.
  3. Take a second reading farther forward and farther rearward. Use the smallest usable value if the bed tapers or contains protrusions.
  4. Record the height and shape of any wheel-well lip, tie-down pocket or trim that could interfere with the camper base.

When a camper’s base must occupy the space between the wheel wells, this narrowest floor width is the critical width—not the wider dimension measured near the top rails. Hotomobil defines floor width in this manner and lists floor length and floor width as the minimum basic matching measurements.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not substitute rail width for floor width

A camper that rests above the wheel wells may use the rail-to-rail dimension instead. Measure that separately; do not use it to declare an between-the-wheel-wells camper compatible. The mounting design determines which width governs.

Record rail, wheelhouse and bed-height dimensions

Once floor length and floor width are recorded, measure the dimensions that determine whether the camper can pass over or sit on the bed’s structure.

Measurement How to take it When it matters
Inside rail width Measure between the inside faces of the bed rails at the locations where the camper platform or brackets will rest. Check the front and rear because the width may change. Camper bases that sit on, span or attach across the rails.
Floor to top of rail Measure vertically from the bed floor to the top surface of the rail. Take readings on both sides if the bed is not symmetrical. Platform height, camper wall clearance and the relationship between the camper body and the truck rails.
Wheelhouse width Measure the width of each wheel well at the points the camper base must clear. Record the narrower side if they differ. Bases that pass over the wheel wells or have cut-outs around them.
Wheelhouse height Measure vertically from the floor to the highest point of each wheel well or obstruction. Determining whether the camper floor, supports or a raised platform can clear the wheel wells.
Bed-wall height Measure from the floor to the top of the bed wall where the camper’s lower body or side structure will sit. Camper walls, skirt panels and mounting hardware that overlap the bed sides.
Tailgate opening Measure the opening width and height if the camper passes through it, and note whether the tailgate is closed, lowered or removed in the maker’s instructions. Campers with a base or rear structure that uses the tailgate opening.

Outpost Campers’ truck fitment guide highlights four core fitment measurements: bed length, width between the wheel wells, rail height and cab height. Hotomobil’s more detailed compatibility checker distinguishes rail width, rail length, floor width, wheelhouse dimensions, wall height, overall height and tailgate height. Those lists illustrate why a single advertised bed-length category is inadequate.

Measure the cab and plan cabover clearance

A truck camper’s cabover extends over the cab, so the bed can be the correct length while the upper structure still conflicts with the roof, rear window, antenna, rails or an aftermarket accessory. Measure the truck’s cab height and identify the points shown in the camper maker’s clearance diagram.

  1. Measure from the same reference surface the camper maker uses—usually the ground or bed floor—to the highest relevant point of the cab.
  2. Note roof accessories, marker lights, bed caps, racks and other equipment that will remain installed.
  3. Compare the truck’s cab height with the camper’s stated cabover clearance requirement and diagram.
  4. Check the rear window and cab corners for the camper’s required fore-and-aft clearance, not just vertical space.

Do not apply a universal clearance number. The acceptable relationship depends on the truck, camper shape, suspension, mounting system and the maker’s instructions.

Check the tailgate arrangement before assuming the measured length is usable

Truck campers differ in how they use the tailgate. A model may require the tailgate to remain closed, to be lowered during loading and travel, or to be removed. Some bases stop at the tailgate opening; others extend over it. The same truck measurement can therefore produce different results for two campers.

  • Read the exact camper instructions for the required tailgate position.
  • Measure the opening and hinge or latch areas if the camper base passes through the opening.
  • Confirm that lowering or removing the tailgate does not eliminate a required support point or interfere with lights, wiring or tie-down access.
  • Record the rear overhang shown in the camper specification and compare it with the truck’s geometry; do not infer an acceptable overhang from bed length alone.

Freedom Campers’ fit guide includes tailgate arrangements in its fit-chart context, which is why the tailgate position should be written beside your length measurement rather than treated as an afterthought.

Identify how the camper is supposed to sit in the bed

Before comparing numbers, determine the camper’s mounting style. Ask the manufacturer or consult the installation diagram whether the camper:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • sits entirely between the wheel wells on the floor;
  • uses a raised platform to pass over the wheel wells;
  • rests on or spans the bed rails;
  • requires a specific bed mat, spacer, platform or support;
  • uses factory or aftermarket tie-down points outside the bed.

This decision tells you which of your measurements are controlling. A between-the-wheel-wells base is governed primarily by floor length, narrow floor width, wheelhouse shape and floor height. A rail-mounted design adds rail width, rail length and floor-to-rail height. A platform system introduces the platform’s own footprint and height, which must be included in the clearance comparison.

Build a truck measurement record

Use one row for every dimension and include the condition under which it was measured. A record like this prevents an apparently precise number from losing its context.

Truck dimension Your value Condition to note
Inside floor length Enter the measured value Bulkhead to inside tailgate; tailgate closed, down or removed; liner or mat installed
Narrowest floor width Enter the measured value Usually between wheel wells; location of narrowest point
Inside rail width Enter the measured value Front and rear readings; rail-mounted or spanning camper
Floor to top of rail Enter the measured value Left and right readings; any unevenness
Wheelhouse width and height Enter both values Highest and widest points; obstructions or trim
Bed-wall height Enter the measured value Floor to top of side wall
Tailgate opening Enter width and height Required loading and travel position
Cab height and relevant clearance points Enter the measured values Roof accessories and the maker’s diagram reference

Compare the numbers with the exact camper specification

Obtain the camper maker’s dimensional drawing, fit chart or compatibility checker for the exact model, floor plan and revision. Do not compare your truck with a different floor plan in the same product family. Camper dimensions can change with the cabover, bathroom, storage, base, platform or rear-wall design.

Camper requirement What to compare What a mismatch means
Floor footprint Camper floor length and base width versus your usable floor length and narrowest floor width. The base may not sit fully on the bed or may contact the wheel wells.
Rail geometry Camper rail width, rail length and support surfaces versus your inside rail width and floor-to-rail height. The camper may not be supported at the intended points.
Wheelhouse clearance Camper cut-outs or platform height versus wheelhouse width and height. The camper may require a different platform or may not clear the wheel wells.
Cab clearance Camper cabover dimensions and specified clearance versus your cab height and accessories. Contact or inadequate clearance can occur even when the floor fits.
Tailgate arrangement Required closed, lowered or removed position versus your opening, hinges and support points. Loading, travel or rear support may not conform to the installation instructions.
Rear overhang The camper maker’s stated overhang and support requirements versus the truck and mounting system. Handling, support or legal requirements may differ; ask the maker rather than assuming.
Tie-down path Required front and rear tie-down locations and hardware clearance versus your truck. The camper may not be secured using the prescribed method.
Center of gravity Camper’s specified center-of-gravity position versus the truck’s recommended carrying arrangement. A physically fitting camper can still load the truck incorrectly.

Camper Upgrade’s fit calculator lists clearance, overhang, center of gravity and tie-down clearance among its fitment inputs. Treat those as separate checks rather than assuming that a successful length-and-width comparison is approval to travel.

Separate physical fit from payload

Dimensions answer whether the camper can occupy the space. Payload answers whether the truck is rated to carry the loaded combination. These are different questions and must be checked independently.

Lance’s 2026 “Matching Your Truck & Camper” brochure defines payload capacity as the amount the truck manufacturer recommends placing in the bed. The brochure also presents camper-specific labels such as floor length, overall length, cabover height and center of gravity. Use the truck manufacturer’s capacity information for your exact configuration and the camper maker’s loaded-weight guidance for the exact model.

  1. Find the truck’s capacity information for the precise model year, cab, drivetrain, axle and factory options. Use the vehicle label, owner information and manufacturer documentation rather than a generic figure for the model family.
  2. Use the camper maker’s weight guidance for the configuration you will actually carry. Include the equipment, water, propane, batteries, cargo and passengers that the maker says to account for.
  3. Compare the resulting loaded demand with the truck’s stated payload and axle or tire limits where the manufacturer provides them.
  4. If the maker’s documents do not clearly state how a modification, platform or accessory changes the load, obtain written clarification before ordering.

Do not convert a model-specific dry or advertised weight into a universal payload rule, and do not assume that a camper that fits between the wheel wells is automatically within the truck’s rating.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use fitment tools without replacing your measurements

Manufacturer checkers can speed up the comparison, but their result is only as good as the truck information entered. Hotomobil’s compatibility checker asks for detailed values including rail width, rail length, floor width, wheelhouse dimensions, wall height, overall height and tailgate height. Enter measured values in the requested units and keep a copy of the result with your truck record.

Outpost Campers recommends measuring with a tape measure for its four core fitment dimensions. Freedom Campers’ fit chart provides model-specific context and was identified as updated in October 2026. Lance’s 2026 brochure supplies dimensional labels and compatibility guidance. Use the current document for the camper you are buying; an older chart may not cover a revised base, mounting kit or truck configuration.

Common measuring mistakes and how to correct them

Using the advertised bed class

Symptom: The listing says “6-foot bed,” but the camper base is too long or the rear support does not align.

Correction: Re-measure from the inside bulkhead to the inside tailgate and send the exact number, truck configuration and tailgate position to the camper maker.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Measuring the widest point instead of the narrowest point

Symptom: A camper appears to fit at the tailgate but binds at the wheel wells.

Correction: Measure between the wheel wells at several locations and use the narrowest usable floor width for a base that sits inside them.

Comparing floor width with rail width

Symptom: The camper specification looks narrower than the bed at the rails but wider than the actual floor between the wheel wells.

Correction: Match floor width to a between-the-wheel-wells base and rail width only to a rail-supported design.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ignoring the bed liner or platform

Symptom: Measurements taken on bare metal no longer match the installed bed.

Correction: Measure in the final configuration, including a permanent liner, mat, spacer or platform, and tell the camper maker what remains in place.

Checking only the floor

Symptom: The base fits, but the cabover contacts the roof or the tie-downs cannot be reached.

Correction: Add cab height, wheelhouse geometry, rail height, tailgate opening, tie-down clearance and center-of-gravity checks before ordering.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Assuming overhang is interchangeable between trucks

Symptom: A camper that works on one bed configuration is transferred to another without a new fit check.

Correction: Recheck the maker’s overhang, support and center-of-gravity requirements for the new truck. No universal overhang limit is established by the cited guidance.

When the numbers do not match

Do not force a near match by compressing, trimming or relocating the camper unless the manufacturer explicitly approves that modification. Send the camper maker a complete measurement sheet, photographs showing the wheel wells and rails, the truck’s model year and configuration, and the tailgate position used. Ask which dimension controls and whether an approved platform, spacer or mounting kit changes the required measurements.

If the maker’s chart and your measurements disagree, pause the purchase until the discrepancy is resolved in writing. A difference can result from a different trim package, a chart revision, a bed liner, a measurement reference point or a different camper base.
