For the English SHOEI safety instructions, that means horizontally around the head about 2.5 cm (1 inch) above the eyebrows. Use the resulting centimetre measurement only as the starting point for the size chart of the exact helmet model and market. A number alone does not prove that a helmet fits: SHOEI describes circumference as a rough guide and recommends trying on the specific model.
What the measurement tells you—and what it cannot
Head measurement gives a repeatable circumference to compare with a manufacturer’s chart. It helps you narrow the available sizes before you visit a retailer or order a helmet. It does not account for every feature that determines on-head fit, including the way a particular shell and liner sit on your head. SHOEI states that circumference cannot identify helmet size on its own and that two models from the same manufacturer can feel different at the same nominal size.

Use the measurement as an initial reference, not as a substitute for trying on the actual model. The relevant chart is the one for the helmet’s brand, model and market. Letter sizes are not a universal conversion system between manufacturers, and a chart from one market should not automatically be applied to another.

- A soft, flexible tape measure that can wrap around your head without digging into the skin.
- The manufacturer’s instructions and size chart for the exact helmet model you are considering.
- A mirror or another person to check that the tape stays level, especially at the back of your head.
- A note of the measurement in the unit used by the chart, normally centimetres in the SHOEI examples below.
Measure with the tape against your head rather than over a hat or other bulky headwear. Keep your hair arranged in the way you normally wear it under the helmet so that repeated readings are comparable. Do not pull the tape so tightly that it compresses your head; it should be firm and level without slack.

Follow your helmet maker’s landmarks
There is no single, universal motorcycle-helmet measurement protocol established by the manufacturer instructions cited here. The placement can differ by brand, market or manual. Read the instructions supplied for the helmet you plan to buy before taking the measurement.
SHOEI’s English safety instructions
SHOEI’s English safety instructions say to pass the tape horizontally around the head about 2.5 cm (1 inch) above the eyebrows, then select the helmet closest to that measurement. The tape should form one level ring rather than rising at the forehead or dipping behind the head.
A different SHOEI manual’s three-landmark method
A separate SHOEI safety manual describes a three-landmark path: pass the tape through points 2 cm above the eyebrows, 2 cm above where the ears join the head, and the most prominent point at the back of the head. That is a different set of landmarks from the 2.5-cm English instruction.
Do not average, merge or improvise these descriptions into one universal rule. Use the instructions for the brand, market and edition of the helmet you are buying. If the printed manual supplied with the helmet differs from a general web page, follow the model’s applicable instructions or ask the manufacturer or an authorized retailer which chart applies.

Step-by-step: measure your head circumference
- Identify the exact chart. Write down the helmet brand and model, and find its size chart for your market. Confirm whether the chart uses centimetres, inches or another unit before you start.
- Choose the correct tape path. Apply the landmarks in that model’s instructions. If you are using the cited English SHOEI procedure, position the tape about 2.5 cm (1 inch) above the eyebrows. Do not switch to the three-landmark route unless that is the instruction for your helmet.
- Wrap the tape all the way around. Bring it around the widest practical path specified by the instructions, passing over the prominent point at the back when that path is called for. Make sure the tape is not twisted.
- Keep the tape horizontal. Check the front, sides and back in a mirror or have someone look for a high or low section. A slanted tape changes the circumference you read.
- Set a firm, neutral tension. Remove visible slack, but do not pull hard enough to press into the skin. The goal is a consistent circumference, not the smallest possible number.
- Read and record the circumference. Note the value in the chart’s unit. Record the actual number rather than jumping immediately to a letter size.
- Repeat the reading. Release the tape and measure again using the same landmarks. If the results differ, reset the tape path and level before deciding which reading is reliable. A third check can help identify a placement error.
- Compare with the exact model chart. Use the closest size shown by that manufacturer’s chart as your starting option. Do not translate the result into another brand’s XS, S, M or L by assumption.
If you do not have a tape measure
A non-stretch string or strip of paper can serve as a generic fallback: wrap it along the same manufacturer-specified path, mark where it meets, then lay it flat against a ruler. This workaround is not a motorcycle-specific manufacturer protocol, so verify the resulting circumference with a proper tape and the helmet maker’s chart before buying.
How to use the number in a size chart
The chart is a guide to the manufacturer’s size range, not a guarantee of comfort or protection. Keep the model and market attached to every number you write down. The following figures are SHOEI examples and should not be treated as universal motorcycle-helmet conversions.
SHOEI worldwide FAQ examples
| SHOEI size | Approximate head circumference |
|---|---|
| XS | 53 cm |
| S | 55 cm |
| M | 57 cm |
| L | 59 cm |
| XL | 61 cm |
| XXL | 63 cm |
These approximate values come from SHOEI WORLDWIDE’s product FAQ. They are manufacturer sizing guidance, not a population statistic and not a promise that every SHOEI model uses exactly the same internal shape.
SHOEI Japan-market range
SHOEI’s Japan-market purchase guide shows a broader range, beginning at XXS at 51 cm and extending to XXXXL at 67 cm. The market-specific guide should be consulted for the intermediate labels and the model you are buying. Do not copy the Japan-market range into a different country’s chart without checking that market’s instructions.

When your measurement falls between chart entries
Use the chart’s own nearest-size guidance, then verify the choice by trying on the actual helmet. Do not solve a boundary measurement by assuming that going up or down one letter has the same effect across brands. If the chart does not explain a boundary case, an authorized retailer or the manufacturer is the appropriate source for model-specific advice.
Check the helmet on your head
Once the circumference points to a size, try on that exact model whenever possible. SHOEI’s safety instructions say, “Use only a helmet that fits snugly all around your head.” The liner should make consistent contact around the head rather than leaving obvious looseness, but snugness by itself is not a certification that the helmet is safe or correctly fitted.
Signs the fit needs attention
- The helmet moves on your head: SHOEI warns that a helmet that does not fit properly may move while riding. Recheck the measurement and the model’s chart instead of accepting movement as normal.
- Pressure develops into a headache: The same instructions warn that an improper fit can press on the head and cause a headache. Remove the helmet and reassess the model, size and internal adjustment rather than trying to tolerate escalating pain.
- One area feels wrong while the rest feels acceptable: Circumference may be close while the particular model’s interior shape does not suit you. Try the same size in another model or obtain model-specific fitting help; do not assume a different letter size automatically fixes a localized pressure point.
- The helmet feels loose despite a matching chart number: Repeat the measurement with the specified landmarks, confirm that you used the correct market chart, and try the actual model. The chart number is only an initial reference.
Try before buying when you can
SHOEI recommends trying on the desired model at a dealer because even helmets from one manufacturer can feel different at the same nominal size. Bring your recorded circumference, but let the on-head fit of the exact model decide whether the chart’s starting size is appropriate.

SHOEI describes a Personal Fitting System at SHOEI Technical Shops. Staff use dedicated measuring equipment and pads to adjust the interior for the wearer. This is a SHOEI service, not a fitting service that can be assumed to exist for every brand or retailer. Ask whether the shop is an authorized location and whether the service is available for the model and market you are considering.

Professional help is especially useful when a careful measurement does not resolve a choice, when the helmet moves, or when pressure remains in one area. A fitting service cannot turn an unsuitable model into a universally correct one; its value is in evaluating the actual helmet and making the manufacturer-supported interior adjustments available for that model.

Using a generic chart from the internet
A chart that is not tied to your exact model can assign the wrong letter size. Start with the manufacturer’s current chart for your market, and retain the circumference as the common reference when comparing options.
Combining different measurement instructions
The two SHOEI procedures described above use different vertical landmarks. Combining them creates a measurement that may match neither manual. Select one procedure based on the applicable instructions and use it consistently.

Assuming the largest or smallest number is best
Overtightening the tape can produce a falsely small circumference; leaving slack can produce a falsely large one. Neither result is a fit test. Use neutral tension and repeat the reading.

Treating a letter as a universal size
XS, S, M, L, XL and XXL are labels within a manufacturer’s system. They are not standardized dimensions across motorcycle-helmet brands, and they do not describe how every model will feel.
Ordering solely from circumference
A matching number does not establish that the helmet sits correctly. If the model is available locally, try it on; if it is not, use the maker’s return and fitting guidance and obtain model-specific advice before riding.
A practical decision path
- Chart first: Locate the exact model and market instructions.
- Measure second: Use the specified landmarks, level tape and centimetres or other chart unit.
- Choose a starting size: Select the chart’s closest entry without importing another brand’s conversion.
- Verify on the head: Check for snug, even contact and watch for movement or headache.
- Escalate uncertainty: Try the actual model at an authorized dealer or seek the manufacturer’s model-specific fitting service.
This sequence keeps the useful part of a head measurement—the repeatable circumference—while respecting the limitation SHOEI places on that number. Measure for the chart, then let the fit of the exact helmet determine whether the starting size is suitable.
