Measure the gear at its longest, widest and tallest points, then compare those dimensions with the exact car’s tailgate opening, boot-floor length, narrowest width and usable height in the seat position you will use. Check the loading route and tailgate clearance, not just the advertised litre capacity. A borderline fit should be confirmed with the actual item and vehicle before you buy or travel.
The measurement that answers “will it fit?”
A boot can have enough quoted volume for an item and still reject it because the item cannot pass through the tailgate, cannot be turned inside the aperture or touches the tailgate when closed. Treat the job as a route-and-space check:

- Measure the packed item at its greatest length, width and height, including handles, wheels, feet, frames and other rigid projections.
- Measure or find the exact car’s tailgate aperture width and height, boot-floor length, narrowest floor width and usable interior height.
- Match both sets of dimensions to the seat configuration you intend to use.
- Allow clearance for angling, trim, seals and tailgate movement.
- Physically test a close fit with the real item whenever possible.
This method works for pushchairs, bicycles, musical instruments, work equipment, sports cases, flat-pack furniture and luggage. A retractable tape measure is useful preparation, but no particular tool or brand is required.

Why boot litres do not settle the question
Boot volume is a capacity measurement, usually calculated under a specified standard and loading height. It does not describe the shape of the opening, the position of wheel arches or whether a long rigid object can be inserted. Manufacturers therefore publish aperture and length dimensions separately from litres.

Seat position changes the usable shape as well. A volume quoted to the rear seatbacks is not the same as space extending to the front seats and roofline with the rear seats folded. A raised floor, a parcel shelf, a spare-wheel well or a sloping tailgate can reduce the space available to a tall object even when the headline volume appears generous.
Use litres to compare broad carrying capacity after you have checked the dimensions. Use physical measurements to decide whether one particular item will fit.
Measure the gear before visiting the car
Record the maximum dimensions
Place the item in the condition in which you will transport it. Measure the longest rigid dimension, the widest point and the tallest point. Include detachable-looking parts that will remain attached during loading: suitcase wheels, trolley handles, camera-rig knobs, bicycle pedals, roof-box fittings and protective cases.

If the item is soft-sided, measure it packed and zipped rather than relying on its empty catalogue size. Compressible material may deform, but do not assume it can be crushed around a hard frame or forced against the tailgate.
List alternate orientations
Measure any orientation that is genuinely possible. A rectangular case may enter on its side and then lie flat; a bicycle may require the front wheel removed; a wardrobe box may need to stand upright. Record the orientation and the parts removed, because an orientation that works on paper may be impossible after the item is inside the narrow aperture.
Measure more than one item together
For several bags or boxes, measure the packed group as it will be loaded, not only each piece separately. Two objects that fit individually may block each other’s turning space. Sketch the floor plan and identify which item must be loaded first.

Find the car measurements that correspond to the item
Tailgate aperture
Measure the narrowest useful opening, not the widest point of the exterior hatch. Check width at the lower edge and at the height where your item first enters. Measure vertical opening height from the sill or threshold to the lowest obstruction in the hatch opening. Trim, hinges, weather seals and a retracting parcel shelf can reduce the practical aperture.

Measure from the tailgate threshold to the rear seatbacks along the floor. Take one measurement with the rear seats upright and another with them folded if that is part of your plan. Keep the tape on the usable floor surface; a sloping backrest or raised step can make the effective length shorter than a straight-line measurement.
Narrowest floor width
Measure between the wheel arches and other permanent intrusions at the narrowest point. The distance at the tailgate can be wider than the space farther forward. For a box or case, this width often determines whether it can lie flat.
Usable interior height
Measure from the load floor to the lowest obstruction or to the height at which the tailgate begins to close. Check both the centre and the sides: a roof curve can leave less height near the corners. Include the parcel shelf if you plan to keep it fitted.
Loading-sill height
Measure from the ground to the sill. This does not decide geometric fit, but it tells you how far a heavy or awkward item must be lifted. A high sill may justify a two-person lift or a ramp even when the item fits once inside.

Estate-car dimensions vary by model year, trim, powertrain, floor arrangement and optional equipment. Verify the exact vehicle identification rather than transferring a figure from another version in the same model family. Ask for the manufacturer’s current dimensions for the relevant market and inspect the owner’s manual for loading limits and seat-folding instructions.

Seat configuration must be stated beside every measurement. For example, the current Volkswagen UK Golf Estate dimensions page accessed in 2026 lists a 1,062 mm boot length with the rear seats upright and 1,845 mm with them folded, alongside a 611-litre boot volume. Those figures describe that product page’s specification and are not a universal estate-car standard.
A Volkswagen Golf Estate press presentation from 2013 gives a different set of measurements: a 675 mm vertical tailgate aperture, 1,031 mm aperture width, 1,003 mm minimum cargo width and 936 mm minimum height. It also describes 605 litres to the rear seatbacks, 1,620 litres to the front seatbacks and roofline, and up to 2,671 mm object length with the front passenger seat folded in a specified trim. These historical, configuration-specific figures illustrate why a brochure number must be matched to the car and loading arrangement you actually have.
Test the loading route, not only the final rectangle
Compare the item with the aperture before comparing it with the floor. An object can be shorter, narrower and lower than the interior space yet fail because its diagonal cannot pass through the hatch.
- Hold the item in its intended entry orientation and compare its cross-section with the narrowest aperture dimensions.
- Identify the first point of contact: hatch glass, trim, wheel arch, seatback or roof lining.
- Work out whether the item can be rotated after its leading edge has entered. Leave room for your hands and for the item’s centre of gravity to move.
- Check the final position with the tailgate fully closed. Look for contact with the glass, wiper motor, parcel shelf, headrests or roof trim.
- Repeat the check with seats folded, front passenger seat adjusted or floor panels moved exactly as you intend to travel.
For a close fit, use cardboard or a rigid frame cut to the item’s maximum dimensions. A template exposes diagonal and corner conflicts that a single length measurement misses.

The table shows why two cars with similar litres can have different practical fit: the opening, narrowest width, floor length and height are independent constraints.
How to measure a car in person
- Set the seats first. Put the rear seats, front passenger seat, adjustable floor and parcel shelf in the configuration you will use.
- Measure the aperture. Check the narrowest width at the bottom and higher up, then measure vertical opening height to the lowest obstruction.
- Measure the floor. Record threshold-to-seatback length, narrowest width between intrusions and the height under the parcel shelf or tailgate.
- Check the sill. Measure ground-to-sill height and note any step between the sill and the load floor.
- Load the item. Use the same orientation and lifting approach you expect in real use. Do not force a hard item past a seal or trim panel.
- Close and inspect. Operate the tailgate slowly, check all contact points and confirm that visibility, lights and seat belts remain unobstructed.
When shopping remotely, request these measurements from the seller or dealer and ask for photographs with a tape measure across the opening. If the fit is critical, arrange a physical demonstration with your own item before committing.

Comparing two estate cars for the same gear
Use one worksheet for both cars. Keep the measurement conditions identical and mark whether each value is measured by you, supplied by the manufacturer or taken from an independent test.

Do not rank a car on litre capacity when one candidate has an aperture or floor dimension that fails your item. If a published value is missing, mark it as not stated and measure the vehicle rather than estimating it.

Long rigid objects
Length is often achieved diagonally, but the diagonal path depends on aperture width and height. A ladder, rolled carpet with a stiff core or flat-pack panel may need the front passenger seat folded or reclined. Confirm that this configuration is permitted and that the object will not interfere with controls or airbags.
Bicycles and wheeled equipment
Measure with pedals, handlebars and wheel housings in place. If a wheel or handlebar is removed, include the time, tools and storage space required. Check that the remaining frame can be turned through the hatch without striking the roof or tailgate.
Soft bags and clothing
Soft luggage can conform to corners, but zips, wheels and internal frames remain hard limits. Measure the packed bag at maximum fill and leave room for the tailgate seal; compressed fabric should not be relied on to hold the hatch shut.

Fragile or tall loads
Measure the height to the lowest tailgate obstruction, not merely roof height at the centre. Glass, instruments and plants need additional clearance so they are not pressed against the hatch while the car moves.

Common mistakes and their fixes
- Using only litres: check aperture and narrowest width before capacity.
- Measuring the car’s widest point: measure the narrowest useful opening and floor section.
- Ignoring projections: include handles, wheels, pedals, hinges and protective cases in the item dimensions.
- Mixing seat positions: label every length as seats-up, seats-folded or front-passenger-seat configuration.
- Assuming a flat floor: inspect steps, raised floors, split backrests and wheel arches.
- Forgetting the tailgate: close it slowly and check glass, trim, wiper hardware and the parcel shelf.
- Transferring figures between versions: verify model year, trim, powertrain and market.
- Testing with an empty bag: measure the packed shape you will actually transport.
Load the gear safely after it fits
Geometric fit does not make a load safe. Renault’s owner-manual luggage-compartment guidance says, “Always position the heaviest items directly on the floor.” The same guidance advises distributing transported objects evenly and using luggage-compartment lashing points where fitted.
- Place heavy items low and as far forward as practical, against the seatbacks.
- Spread weight across the floor instead of concentrating it at one side.
- Secure objects with the vehicle’s approved straps or lashing points so they cannot slide or become projectiles.
- Keep the driver’s view, lamps, seat belts and emergency equipment clear.
- Follow the exact owner’s manual for maximum payload, lashing hardware and whether a seat may be folded while occupied.
Recheck the load after a short drive. Movement can change clearance and put pressure on the tailgate even when the initial test looked satisfactory.
When published data is incomplete
Manufacturers do not always publish every aperture or floor measurement, and independent records may cover an older model year. Treat an unavailable dimension as unknown, not as permission to assume it matches another estate.
- Ask the manufacturer or dealer for the exact opening, floor and height measurements.
- Take the item to a vehicle with the same specification and measure it directly.
- Build a full-size cardboard template from the item’s maximum dimensions and test the route.
- If the item is essential to your work or hobby, make the physical test a purchase condition.
Historical figures remain useful for explaining measurement methods, but they should not be presented as current advice for a new car. Recheck specifications and the owner’s manual at the time of purchase because vehicle equipment and published data can change.
A repeatable checklist
- Item length, width and height measured at maximum packed size.
- Handles, wheels, frames and other protrusions included.
- Tailgate opening width and height checked at the narrowest points.
- Boot-floor length and narrowest width measured in the intended seat layout.
- Usable height checked under the parcel shelf and tailgate.
- Loading-sill height considered for lifting and ramps.
- Entry angle and ability to rotate the item tested.
- Tailgate closed with clearance around trim and glass.
- Vehicle model year, trim, powertrain and market verified.
- Load secured according to the vehicle handbook.
If every item on this checklist is satisfied, you have evidence of a practical fit rather than a guess based on boot litres.
