Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallMeasure the garage and the exact car separately, then compare the limiting clearances—not just the advertised wall-to-wall size. You need four vehicle figures: mirror-to-mirror width for entry, body width for the parked space, overall length for depth, and height for the opening and interior. A sedan can pass through the door yet leave too little room to open its doors, close the garage door, reach the trunk, or connect an EV charger.
Use a tape measure for checking garage dimensions, record the narrowest usable measurements, and verify the result with the actual vehicle or an in-person inspection before relying on a close fit.

Why garage fit has two separate tests
Entry clearance answers whether the car can be driven through the opening. Parked clearance answers whether it can sit inside while people can get out, the garage door can close, stored items remain accessible, and the charging cable can reach the port. Treating those as one measurement is the most common source of a mistaken fit decision.
The entrance may be narrower than the room behind it because of the door tracks, framing, weather seals, posts, or a raised threshold. Conversely, a wide entrance can lead to an interior narrowed by shelving, cabinets, pillars, bicycles, another vehicle, or stored boxes. Measure both areas independently.

Do not turn a small positive difference into an automatic “yes.” A calculation only describes static dimensions. Driveway approach angle, turning room, mirror position, door swing, and the way you actually park can make a nominally positive clearance impractical.
Collect the exact dimensions for the sedan
Start with the manufacturer’s specifications for the exact model year, trim, wheel and suspension configuration, and fitted equipment. A brochure may list body width while omitting mirrors, or show a range that changes with options. The Tesla Model 3 owner manual (2017–2023) illustrates why the configuration matters: its dimension diagram is accompanied by a warning that dimensions can vary with options and other factors.
Record these four vehicle measurements
| Vehicle figure | Compare it with | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Width with mirrors in their normal driving position | Narrowest clear garage-door opening | Determines whether the sedan can enter without contacting the frame, tracks, or seals. |
| Body width, excluding mirrors if that is how the specification is stated | Narrowest usable interior width | Determines whether the parked car occupies the space between walls and obstructions. |
| Overall length | Usable garage depth | Determines whether the door can close and whether the front and trunk remain clear. |
| Overall height, including fitted roof equipment | Door opening height and the lowest interior obstruction | Determines whether the roof clears the entrance and anything hanging inside. |
If the specification does not provide mirror-to-mirror width, obtain that figure from the owner’s manual, a manufacturer dimension drawing, a dealer, or a physical measurement of the same configuration. Do not substitute folded-mirror width unless you will consistently fold the mirrors before entering and have a reliable way to do so without compromising visibility or control.
Check equipment that changes the envelope
- Different wheels, tires, or suspension settings can alter the listed dimensions or the approach angle.
- Roof racks, fixed crossbars, antennas, or other roof equipment add height at the point that is most likely to meet a low obstruction.
- Options can change the body or mirror configuration. Keep the trim and option list with your measurement sheet.
- Powered trunk lids may open to a height that conflicts with a low garage door or ceiling fixture. The Tesla Model 3 manual, for example, describes adjusting powered trunk-opening height to avoid objects; check the procedure for the specific car rather than assuming the lid will stop where you need it.
Measure the garage entrance first
Close the garage door, remove anything that temporarily narrows the opening, and measure the clear passage that the car will actually use. If the opening is not level or has different widths at the top and bottom, record the smallest value. Measure between the surfaces that would stop a mirror or body panel, not between distant decorative trim.
Width: find the narrowest clear point
- Measure at the floor, around mirror height, and higher in the opening. Note the smallest clear width.
- Check both sides for door tracks, hinges, weather seals, framing, posts, shelving, or objects that protrude into the passage.
- Compare that narrowest width with the sedan’s width at its mirrors in the configuration used to enter.
- Mark the measured edges with removable tape so a second person can watch the mirrors and verify where the limiting points are.
Folded mirrors are a conditional measurement, not a free extra margin. If you must fold them, the entry routine needs to include the folding action, and you still need to account for the body passing through the same opening. A mirror that clears when folded does not make the car’s body narrower.
Height: include the door hardware
Measure the clear height from the threshold or floor to the lowest part of the open door assembly, not merely to the ceiling. Door tracks, rollers, springs, and the raised edge of the door can be lower than the surrounding header. Compare this value with the sedan’s maximum fitted height, including any roof equipment that will remain installed.

Look for a second height restriction inside the garage. A car may clear the entrance and then meet a light, storage rack, beam, or open-door mechanism farther in. Record the lowest obstruction along the intended parking path.

The tape measurement starts at the entrance, but the driveway determines whether you can line the sedan up with it. Observe the approach from the street or parking area: note the available turning room, side walls, parked vehicles, steep changes in grade, and any angle that forces one mirror closer to the frame. A straight-line width comparison cannot certify a maneuver that requires a sharp turn immediately before the threshold.
Measure usable interior width
With the garage empty or with every permanent item identified, measure between the closest obstructions on the intended parking line. Wall-to-wall dimensions are not sufficient if a cabinet, column, workbench, bicycle, or second vehicle occupies part of the bay.
Measure at the car’s widest practical zone
Record the narrowest width at the height and position where the sedan is most likely to meet an obstruction. Compare it with the body width, then evaluate what remains for door opening and people. A car can fit between the walls while leaving a door edge against a cabinet or making it impossible to exit on one side.
- Identify which doors must be used every day and which side needs the most opening room.
- Account for wall-mounted storage, posts, charging equipment, and items that may move or be left in the bay.
- Decide whether passengers, child seats, or mobility equipment require a particular door to open farther.
- Keep a separate note for temporary items. A fit that works only after moving boxes every time is a different outcome from a convenient daily fit.
Use the actual parking line
Measure along the path and final position you expect to use, not only at the center of the garage. If the car must be offset to one side to leave a walkway, that offset can make one side the limiting clearance. Mark the tire position on the floor and remeasure from that line to the nearest wall or object.

Measure usable depth and door closure
Measure from the front obstruction that limits how far forward you can park to the inside face of the closed garage door. Include a wall, workbench, storage cabinet, or another vehicle at the front of the bay. Then compare that usable depth with the sedan’s overall length.

Check the front and rear independently
Length clearance is not interchangeable. The front bumper may clear the wall while the rear of the car blocks the door, or the rear may clear while the trunk cannot be opened. Mark the intended stopping point and check both ends at that position.
- Confirm that the garage door can close without touching the roof, trunk, rear glass, antenna, or spoiler.
- Leave the rear access needed to load the trunk in the way you normally use it.
- Check whether the front of the car leaves a safe walking route around it.
- Include door travel and hardware, since the inside face of a sectional or roll-up door changes as it opens and closes.
If you use a parking stop, wall-mounted bumper, or floor mark, measure to that exact stopping reference. Do not rely on a visual estimate from the driveway.
Check vertical clearance inside the garage
After the entrance measurement, trace the car’s path to its final position and identify every low point. Ceiling lights, beams, storage racks, open door tracks, and suspended equipment can be lower than the main ceiling. Compare the lowest point with the sedan’s height in its actual configuration.
Roof equipment should be measured as fitted, not treated as a future possibility. If you may add a rack later, record that separate height and reassess before installation. A clearance that works for the bare sedan may fail once the accessory is attached.
Plan the EV charging position
Charging introduces a placement constraint that a gasoline sedan does not have. The charge-port door must open, the connector must reach the port, and the cable must not be trapped by the garage door or forced across a path where it can be damaged.
Locate the port relative to the walls and door
Identify the port’s side or end on the exact vehicle. Mark where that part of the car will sit in the intended parking position, then check whether the port door can swing or slide open fully. A port that is technically inside the garage may be unusable if a wall, cabinet, or adjacent vehicle blocks the door.

Trace the cable route
Measure from the charger or outlet to the port with the car parked. Consider whether the connector must pass around the front, rear, or side of the car and whether the garage door closes over any part of the cable. Chevrolet’s EV charging support discusses charge-port-door obstruction but does not establish a universal extra-clearance allowance. Assess the actual vehicle, charger location, plug length, and door movement instead of applying a generic buffer.
Keep charging separate from entry clearance
A cable reaching the port does not prove the sedan can enter safely, and a car fitting the bay does not prove it can charge there. Record charging as its own pass/fail check on the worksheet. If charging requires a different stopping point, recheck trunk access, door opening, and the garage door at that position.
Turn the measurements into a decision
Use the narrowest measured value for each comparison. Keep vehicle measurements and garage measurements in the same units, and label every value with its location and configuration.
| Check | Garage value to use | Vehicle value to use | What a pass still requires |
|---|---|---|---|
| Entry width | Narrowest clear opening, including tracks and seals | Width at mirrors in the entry configuration | A straight or turning approach that keeps both mirrors and the body clear. |
| Interior width | Distance between the closest usable obstructions | Body width | Enough practical room for the required doors and occupants. |
| Depth | Front obstruction to inside face of the closed door | Overall length | Door closure, trunk access, and a usable walking route. |
| Height | Lowest point in the opening and along the parking path | Maximum fitted vehicle height | No contact during entry, parking, or door operation. |
| Charging | Port-side space, charger position, and cable path | Port location and connector reach | Port door movement and cable routing without door entrapment. |
Do not present a calculator’s convenience threshold as an engineering standard. The reviewed guidance establishes the measurement method but no universal extra-clearance number. A larger difference is generally easier to use, but the acceptable margin depends on your maneuvering accuracy, occupants, storage, and tolerance for daily adjustments.
A repeatable measurement procedure
- Prepare the space. Remove movable items, identify permanent obstructions, and open the garage door so its tracks and mechanisms are visible.
- Map the entrance. Measure clear width at several heights and clear height at the lowest point. Record the narrowest width and height.
- Map the approach. Observe the driveway or parking-space turn and note any angle, wall, vehicle, or grade that changes the path into the opening.
- Map the bay. Measure usable width between the nearest obstructions and usable depth to the inside face of the closed door. Mark the intended tire position.
- Map vertical obstructions. Measure the lowest fixture, beam, rack, or door hardware along the route and at the final parking point.
- Collect vehicle data. Write down mirror width, body width, overall length, and height for the exact model year, trim, wheels, suspension, and accessories.
- Compare entry dimensions. Use mirror width for the door and body width for the interior. If you plan to fold mirrors, document that operating step separately.
- Compare depth and height. Check the front and rear ends, door closure, trunk opening, and every low point—not only the nominal garage dimensions.
- Plan charging. Mark the charge port, charger or outlet, connector route, and the position of the garage door when closed.
- Verify physically. Test the exact car in the exact garage, preferably with a spotter outside. Drive slowly, watch both mirrors, park on the marked line, close the door, open the necessary doors and trunk, and connect the charger.
Common outcomes and how to resolve them
The sedan is narrower than the opening, but entry still feels difficult
Recheck the mirror-to-mirror figure and the approach angle. Look for a narrowing caused by tracks, seals, or a post that was excluded from the first measurement. If the car must turn immediately before the threshold, the limiting position may occur while the vehicle is angled rather than straight. A physical trial with a spotter is more informative than repeating a centerline calculation.

The interior-width test has failed for daily use even if the body fits. Move or remove the obstruction, change the parking line if the garage allows it, or decide which doors must remain usable. Reassess the side needed for passengers, child seats, or regular loading rather than treating every door as equivalent.

The front and rear clearances disagree
Use the shorter usable section as the controlling depth. If the trunk is the problem, move the parking reference forward only if the front bumper and walking route remain clear. If the garage door is the problem, verify the closed-door position rather than measuring to the opening alone.
The roof clears the entrance but hits something inside
Measure the lowest interior obstruction along the full path. Remove or relocate the fixture, change the parking line if possible, or reassess the sedan with its roof equipment removed. Never infer interior height from the entrance height.
The vehicle fits but cannot charge conveniently
Park on the intended line, open the charge-port door, connect the plug, and close the garage door through its full travel. If the cable is short, the port is blocked, or the cable crosses the door path, change the charger location or parking position and repeat all other clearance checks. Do not assume an extension or alternate cable is suitable without confirming that the vehicle and charging equipment permit it.

The published dimensions do not match the car in front of you
Check the model year, trim, options, wheel and suspension setup, and whether the published width includes mirrors. Manufacturer diagrams and manuals may describe a specific configuration. When the discrepancy remains, measure the exact vehicle or obtain a confirmed dimension from the manufacturer or dealer before making the purchase decision.
How to compare several electric sedans fairly
Use one garage worksheet for every candidate. Changing the measurement method between vehicles can make a comparison look better or worse for reasons unrelated to fit.
| Comparison axis | Use the same garage measurement | Vehicle detail to record |
|---|---|---|
| Entry | Narrowest clear door width | Mirror-to-mirror width in normal entry configuration. |
| Parked side clearance | Narrowest usable interior width | Body width and the doors occupants must use. |
| Length | Usable depth to the closed door and front obstruction | Overall length, trunk-opening needs, and parking reference. |
| Height | Lowest opening and interior obstruction | Maximum height with the equipment that will remain fitted. |
| Charging | Port-side space and charger-to-port route | Port location, door movement, and connector reach. |
There is no supported model ranking when the garage and sedan are unspecified. The useful comparison is the one that applies the same limiting measurements and the exact trim and equipment to each candidate.
When a close result needs an in-person check
Arrange a physical verification when any clearance is close, the approach is angled, the garage has multiple obstructions, or charging depends on a precise parking position. Bring the measurement sheet and ask for the exact configuration, not a visually similar trim.
Recommended Free Tools
During the check, have one person outside watch the limiting mirror and frame while the driver enters slowly. Once parked, close the garage door, open the required doors and trunk, inspect the lowest interior point, and connect the charging cable. Repeat the maneuver from the normal driveway approach, because a straight test from directly in front may not represent daily use.
If you cannot test the exact vehicle, treat the result as provisional. A published dimension comparison can eliminate clearly unsuitable options, but it cannot certify comfortable maneuvering or safe daily operation in a tight space.
