To measure brake disc runout, secure the vehicle and wheel exactly as the service manual specifies, fix a dial indicator to a stationary reference, place its contact on the disc’s braking surface near the outside diameter, and rotate the disc slowly through one complete revolution. Record the lowest and highest readings; their difference is the total indicated runout. Judge that number only against the limit for the exact make, model, year and disc configuration.
There is no universal brake-disc runout limit. One Harley-Davidson maintenance procedure calls for disc replacement at or above 0.2 mm (0.008 in) in its applicable context, while a historical Harley-Davidson bulletin for specified 1974–1976 motorcycles lists a different maximum of 0.030 in. Those figures demonstrate why the vehicle-specific service information must control the diagnosis.

What brake disc runout means
Runout is the amount a disc’s braking surface moves from side to side as it turns. A disc can look flat while still producing measurable movement. The dial indicator does not measure thickness variation or pad wear; it measures the change in position at the point where its tip contacts the disc.

The useful result is total indicated runout (TIR): the difference between the highest and lowest indicator readings during one full revolution. For example, if the needle moves from 0.01 mm to 0.17 mm, the indicated variation is 0.16 mm. The arithmetic is simple, but the result is meaningful only when the wheel support, disc retention, indicator mount and contact location match the manufacturer’s procedure.

Because the measurement is taken on a rotating assembly, it describes the condition that exists while the disc is installed and retained in the specified way. A reading taken with a different clamp, stand or wheel condition may not be comparable with the published limit. Treat the test as a controlled setup, not merely as placing a gauge against a loose disc.
Find the correct limit before you touch the brake
Start with the service information for the exact vehicle. Confirm all of the following:
- Make, model and year.
- Front or rear disc, and the specific disc configuration if more than one was fitted.
- Whether the measurement is made with the wheel installed on the vehicle, on a specified stand, or in another prescribed condition.
- Where the indicator tip must contact the disc.
- The allowable runout and the corrective procedure if the reading is high.
Do not substitute a number found for another vehicle. The cited Harley-Davidson maintenance procedure says to measure near the outside diameter with a dial indicator and replace the disc when runout meets or exceeds 0.2 mm (0.008 in) in that procedure’s applicable context. A separate Harley-Davidson bulletin, revised in 1988 for specified 1974–1976 motorcycles, documents a 0.030 in maximum. The different value, application and historical scope are all part of the specification.
| Source and application | Stated maximum or action | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Harley-Davidson maintenance procedure; year not stated in the accessible procedure | Replace the disc when measured runout is at or above 0.2 mm (0.008 in) | Use only for the vehicle and setup covered by that procedure |
| Harley-Davidson bulletin, 1988 revision, specified 1974–1976 motorcycles | 0.030 in maximum | Historical, model-specific example; not a general motorcycle or car limit |
Limits may be stated as a maximum, as a replacement threshold, or as part of a longer diagnostic sequence. Read the wording carefully: “replace at or above” is not the same instruction as “inspect further above” or “maximum allowable.” Keep the units exactly as printed and write down whether the value is inches or millimetres before you begin.
Choose an indicator and mount that can stay still
The official procedure calls for a dial indicator. Select one whose resolution and measuring range let you distinguish the vehicle’s stated tolerance. A fine reading capability is useful when the limit is small, but the instrument’s specifications do not replace the service limit.
Compare potential setups on four practical points: the indicator’s resolution and range, the mount’s stability and reach, access for the contact tip, and compatibility with the available stationary reference. A gauge that can display a small movement is of little value if its arm flexes or its tip cannot reach the specified track.
The mount is just as important as the gauge. It must attach to a rigid reference that does not move with the disc and must reach the specified contact point without flexing. A magnetic base can be convenient where a suitable ferrous surface exists, but it is not suitable for every vehicle or wheel-support arrangement. Other workshop mounts may work if they provide the same rigidity and access. Do not choose a base simply because it is included with an indicator.
Before measuring, check that:
- The indicator stem and contact tip are secure.
- The mount cannot slide, rock or rotate as the disc turns.
- The tip can reach the braking surface near the outside diameter without touching a hole, slot, raised marking or other interrupted feature.
- The needle has enough travel to record the expected variation without bottoming out.
- You can read the scale while rotating the disc without leaning on the vehicle or the mount.
Apply only enough preload to keep the tip in contact throughout the revolution. Excessive preload can make positioning difficult and may encourage sideways force on the disc. The exact preload and contact angle remain vehicle-specific, so use the manual when it gives those details.

Prepare the vehicle and disc
Brake work is safety-critical. Follow the manufacturer’s procedure for securing the vehicle and supporting the wheel. Use the exact wheel and disc retention condition specified for the measurement; do not invent a different clamping or support arrangement because it appears quicker.
Keep the ignition or controls in the condition required by the service information, and prevent the vehicle from moving while the wheel is turned. If the manual requires the wheel to remain installed, do not remove it. If it specifies a particular bench or stand setup, reproduce that setup.
The disc and contact area must be clean enough for the tip to follow the braking surface rather than a loose deposit. Do not remove, loosen or reinstall brake components unless you have the applicable procedure and the correct tools. A change in how the disc is clamped can change the reading, so record the setup you used.

The tip should stay on the continuous braking surface for the complete revolution. If the disc has slots, holes or other interruptions, position the tip where the service information directs and stop if the needle is being lifted by a feature rather than following lateral movement.
Step-by-step: measuring disc runout
1. Verify the procedure and limit
Write down the vehicle identification, disc position and the stated runout limit before starting. Note the units used by the manual. If the service information gives a special measurement location or wheel condition, that instruction takes precedence over the general sequence below.
2. Secure the vehicle and wheel
Support the vehicle and wheel using the manufacturer’s service method. The wheel must be stable while you rotate the disc by hand. Do not allow the vehicle to roll, and do not use a support arrangement that changes the disc’s relationship to the hub from the one specified by the manual.
3. Attach the indicator to a stationary reference
Place the dial-indicator mount on a rigid, non-moving reference. The mount must not be attached to the disc, wheel or any part that turns with them. Tighten the mount enough to prevent movement, then check it by applying only a light hand touch; if the gauge position shifts, correct the mount before taking a reading.

4. Position the contact tip
Place the contact on the disc’s braking surface near its outside diameter, as stated in the Harley-Davidson measurement instruction. Follow the exact contact geometry in your vehicle’s manual. The accessible procedure establishes the near-outside-diameter location but does not establish one universal contact angle, preload or mount position for every vehicle.

Set the tip so it follows the surface as the disc turns. Avoid placing it on a vent, slot, drilled hole, edge break or other interruption unless the service information specifically directs you to do so. Set enough initial movement on the indicator to keep the tip in contact for the entire revolution, while leaving sufficient travel to capture the high point.
5. Establish a repeatable starting reference
With the disc stationary, position the indicator at a convenient reference reading. Zeroing is helpful for reading the change, but the zero value itself is not the diagnosis; the difference between the high and low readings is what matters. Confirm that the mount and tip remain loaded after zeroing.
6. Rotate the disc one complete revolution
Turn the disc slowly by hand through one full revolution. Do not push the disc sideways, pull on it, or use the indicator tip to steer it. Keep the mount fixed and watch for the highest and lowest readings. If the tip crosses an opening or feature that makes the needle jump, stop and verify that the contact location matches the service procedure.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems7. Record the high and low readings
Write down both extremes rather than relying on memory. If the needle oscillates, rotate more slowly and repeat the pass. A useful record includes the disc position at the high point, the low point, the measurement units and the wheel-support condition.
8. Calculate total indicated runout
Subtract the lowest reading from the highest reading. For instance, a high reading of 0.18 mm and a low reading of 0.04 mm produce 0.14 mm of indicated runout. Use the same units as the service limit, converting only when the conversion is controlled and clearly recorded.
9. Compare with the exact limit
Compare the calculated TIR with the limit for the vehicle and procedure you identified in step 1. A reading at or above the 0.2 mm (0.008 in) threshold in the cited Harley-Davidson procedure calls for disc replacement under that procedure. It does not establish the replacement threshold for another Harley-Davidson model, another motorcycle or a car.
10. Repeat when the result is close or questionable
If the result is near the limit, make a second complete revolution after checking the mount, tip contact and retention condition. Record the second high and low values rather than silently choosing the more convenient pass. Consistent readings support a reliable comparison; materially different passes require correcting the setup before a component is judged.
How to interpret the result
Reading below the specified limit
If the measurement is below the correct limit and the setup was faithful to the manual, runout alone does not call for replacing the disc. Continue with the manufacturer’s normal brake inspection and any other checks required for the reported symptom.

Reading at or above the specified limit
Treat an out-of-limit result as a diagnostic finding, not as proof that the disc is the only defective part. The service manual should direct you to determine whether the variation comes from the disc, the disc-to-hub or disc-to-wheel interface, the wheel, or the assembled condition.
Before condemning a component, repeat the measurement after confirming that the indicator mount is rigid, the tip is on the specified surface and the wheel is retained exactly as required. A changed setup can produce a changed number without any repair having taken place.
Unstable or contradictory readings
If repeated revolutions give materially different high and low points, look first for movement in the mount, contact with an interrupted surface, sideways force on the disc, or an unsupported wheel. Correct one condition at a time and repeat the complete revolution. Do not average inconsistent passes into a value that the instrument did not reliably measure.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →What a high reading does—and does not—tell you
Runout is a measurement of the assembled rotating system at the contact point. It does not, by itself, identify whether the disc, wheel, hub, mounting interface or retention condition is responsible. That distinction matters because replacing a disc without following the manufacturer’s diagnostic path may leave the underlying cause in place.
Use the service manual’s follow-up checks to isolate the source. Keep the original reading, the corrected setup and every subsequent reading in your notes. If the manual calls for checking another component or measuring again after a specified correction, follow that sequence rather than improvising.
A single high spot is not a license to press, bend or machine the disc. Such corrective work is outside this measurement procedure and should not be attempted unless the manufacturer expressly provides it. The safe next step is the prescribed diagnostic or replacement procedure.
Common measurement mistakes
- Using a universal Internet limit. Limits differ by vehicle and application. The two Harley-Davidson examples above are not interchangeable.
- Mounting the gauge to a moving part. The reference must remain stationary while the disc rotates.
- Allowing the base to flex. A loose or flexible mount can make the indicator follow the mount instead of the disc.
- Measuring at an unspecified location. The cited procedure calls for a point near the outside diameter; use the location and geometry in the exact manual.
- Pushing the disc sideways. Side load can alter the indicator reading and does not represent normal rotation.
- Taking only one spot reading. Runout is evaluated through a complete revolution, using the difference between the high and low readings.
- Changing the wheel-support condition. A different clamping or retention condition can change the assembled measurement.
- Assuming a magnetic base always works. It requires a suitable ferrous reference and enough rigidity; some setups need another mounting method.
- Replacing parts from the reading alone. Follow the vehicle’s diagnostic procedure to distinguish disc, interface, wheel and assembly causes.
- Recording only a pass or fail. Keep the actual high, low and calculated values so a later technician can reproduce the setup and assess a borderline result.
Safety after measurement or repair
Any brake disassembly, disc replacement or wheel reassembly must follow the appropriate model service manual. A Harley-Davidson instruction sheet warns that rider and passenger safety depends on correct installation, directs users to the applicable service-manual procedures, and says improper installation could result in death or serious injury. It also advises having a dealer perform the work when the procedure is beyond the owner’s capabilities or the correct tools are unavailable.
After any brake repair, follow the manufacturer’s required verification steps. The cited instruction sheet calls for verifying brake operation and testing the repair at low speed. Do not treat a successful dial-indicator reading as a substitute for those functional checks.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I check brake rotor runout?
Secure the vehicle and wheel as the service manual requires, attach a dial indicator to a rigid stationary reference, place the tip on the braking surface near the outside diameter or the manual’s specified point, and rotate the disc slowly through one complete revolution. Record the highest and lowest readings and subtract the low from the high.
What is the allowable brake disc runout?
There is no universal value. The applicable make, model, year and disc configuration determine the limit. One Harley-Davidson procedure uses 0.2 mm (0.008 in) as a replacement threshold, while a historical bulletin for specified 1974–1976 motorcycles lists 0.030 in.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallIs 0.2 mm the limit for every Harley-Davidson or car?
No. That figure applies only to the vehicle and setup covered by the cited Harley-Davidson procedure. Other motorcycles and cars may specify a different number, measurement location or corrective process.
Where should the dial-indicator tip touch the disc?
The cited Harley-Davidson instruction places it on the braking surface near the outside diameter. Follow your vehicle’s exact contact geometry, and avoid slots, holes or edge breaks unless the manual specifically directs that placement.
Can I use a magnetic-base dial indicator?
A magnetic base is one possible workshop solution when a suitable ferrous stationary reference is available. It is not universally suitable; choose a mount that remains rigid, reaches the contact point and fits the specified wheel-support arrangement.
Does a high runout reading prove the disc is warped?
No. The reading describes the assembled rotating system at the contact point. The disc, hub or wheel interface, wheel, or retention condition may contribute. Follow the service manual’s diagnostic path before replacing a part.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Why do my runout readings change each time I rotate the disc?
Check for mount movement, an interrupted contact surface, sideways force on the disc, insufficient wheel support or a changed retention condition. Correct one issue at a time and repeat a complete revolution; do not average inconsistent passes.
What should I do after replacing a disc?
Complete the manufacturer’s installation procedure, verify brake operation and perform the specified low-speed test. If you lack the correct tools or the procedure is beyond your capabilities, have a qualified dealer or technician perform the work.
The Bottom Line
Measure the installed disc through one complete revolution with a rigidly mounted dial indicator, calculate high minus low, and compare that TIR only with the exact vehicle’s service limit. A high reading starts a manufacturer-directed diagnosis; it does not identify the failed component by itself.
