Measure the van and the ladder as a matched system, not as two separate purchases. Record the van’s exact year, make, model, wheelbase and roof height; identify the rack’s specified mounting points; measure the longest and heaviest ladder you will carry; then verify crossbar support, rear overhang, loaded height and vehicle load limits. Approximate roof length alone cannot prove that a rack fits.
What you must know before taking measurements
A ladder rack is constrained by three different interfaces: the van, the rack and the ladder. A measurement that satisfies only one of them can still produce an unsafe or unusable installation.

Identify the exact van configuration
Write down the model year, manufacturer, model, wheelbase and roof designation (such as low, medium or high roof). Also note factory roof rails, roof vents, air-conditioning equipment, beacon bars, solar panels, previous mounting holes and any cargo-area modifications. Vehicle-specific fitment can change with wheelbase and roof height even when two vans share a nameplate.
Use the rack maker’s fitment catalog and installation instructions for that exact configuration. A listed fit should take precedence over assumptions based on a similar-looking roof. Some manufacturers also offer universal, drilling-required systems for vans without a listed fit; those require a different level of verification because the mounting locations are not pre-established.

Find the controlling documents
- The vehicle owner’s manual supplies the van’s roof, axle and loading limits.
- The rack manufacturer’s fitment chart identifies compatible year, model, wheelbase, roof and mounting method.
- The rack installation guide defines the permitted mounting points, fasteners, crossbar spacing and tightening procedure.
Keep all three documents available while measuring. The rack’s published capacity does not replace the vehicle’s own limit, and the vehicle’s roof rating does not authorize mounting a rack in a location the rack maker does not approve.
Tools and a measurement record
You need a tape measure, a second person for long or elevated measurements, a scale suitable for the ladder, a marker or removable tape, a notebook and a way to record photographs. A straightedge can help when a roof has a pronounced taper. Measure in the units used by the rack instructions and record the converted value only as a convenience; do not round away a fitment difference.
Create one worksheet with these fields:
- Van year, make, model, wheelbase and roof height.
- Vehicle identification or build details needed by the rack catalog.
- Existing roof equipment and areas that cannot be drilled or covered.
- Rack model, number of mounts, mounting method and specified crossbar locations.
- Ladder length, width, height, weight and any accessories attached to it.
- Roof-area measurements taken from the rack maker’s stated reference points.
- Crossbar positions, ladder support points and rear overhang.
- Finished vehicle height with rack and ladder installed.
- Lowest overhead opening on the regular route.
Step-by-step: measure the van and ladder
- Confirm the vehicle identity. Match the van’s year, make, model, wheelbase and roof height to the rack maker’s fitment entry. If the entry does not match exactly, stop and resolve the discrepancy before measuring for holes or ordering hardware.
- Document existing equipment. Measure or photograph roof rails, ribs, vents, wiring channels, air-conditioning units and other obstructions. Mark exclusion zones on a roof sketch. A rack may fit the outside dimensions yet conflict with equipment at an approved-looking location.
- Measure the ladder you actually carry. Measure the longest ladder and weigh the heaviest ladder that the van will transport, including stabilizers, hooks, rollers or other permanently attached accessories. Vantech’s October 5, 2026 buying guide puts the practical rule plainly: “Weigh and measure the ladder you carry, including the heaviest one you own rather than the one that lives on the van most weeks.”
- Obtain the rack’s measurement reference. Determine whether the instructions reference roof edges, factory mounting points, threaded inserts, roof ribs or another datum. There is no single roof-length measurement that applies to every rack or van, so do not substitute a measurement taken from a different system.
- Measure the usable roof area. Measure only the area in which the specified mounts and crossbars can actually be installed. Exclude obstructions, prohibited drilling zones and sections outside the rack’s approved mounting pattern. Record both the fore-and-aft distance and the side-to-side space if the instructions use both.
- Lay out the rack positions. Mark the proposed front and rear crossbar locations using the rack guide. Measure the distance between support points and compare it with the ladder’s length. The support points should sit well inside the ladder ends, rather than directly at an end or beyond it.
- Check rear overhang. With the ladder represented at its intended position, measure how far it extends behind the van. Confirm that doors, hinges, cameras, lights and trailer equipment remain usable and that the overhang does not interfere with turning, loading or normal access.
- Measure the loaded height. Measure from the ground to the highest point of the van with the rack installed, then repeat with the ladder loaded. Include feet, towers, crossbars, clamps and any ladder accessory that projects above the assembly.
- Compare the route clearance. Identify the lowest garage, workshop, car-park, wash-bay or loading-door opening on the route the vehicle regularly uses. Compare that opening with the measured finished height. Record the result in the cab or on the driver’s daily check sheet.
- Verify limits before drilling or tightening. Confirm the rack rating, the vehicle roof and axle limits, the number of mounts, the specified fasteners and the installation method. A measurement worksheet is not an installation approval by itself.
How to compare ladder length with crossbar placement
Roof length is useful only when it is tied to the rack’s actual support geometry. A long roof does not guarantee that a ladder can be supported correctly, and a short roof does not automatically rule out a rack if the manufacturer specifies a suitable layout.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsSupport inside the ladder ends
Mark the ladder’s two ends on your roof sketch, then mark each crossbar centerline. Both support points should be clearly inside the ladder ends. If one bar is near an end, check the rack instructions for the permitted span and the ladder maker’s handling guidance rather than moving the bar to an unapproved location.
Account for taper and changing roof width
Many van roofs narrow or curve toward the rear. Measure width at each proposed mount, not only at the widest point. An older installation example for a 2014–2015 Ford Transit Connect describes centering a particular assembly and accounting for roof taper; that example is specific to that vehicle and assembly, not a universal drilling template.

Check loading and unloading space
Measure the side and rear space needed to lift the ladder onto the rack. Consider the person’s reach, nearby walls, trees, parked vehicles and the direction in which the ladder is normally removed. A rack can meet dimensional fitment yet be impractical if the ladder cannot be handled without striking the van or surroundings.
Height and overhead-clearance checks
The clearance number that matters is the finished, loaded vehicle height, not the bare van height in a catalog. Measure after the rack and the tallest or most commonly carried ladder are in their real positions.
Recommended Free Tools
What to include
- Roof-mounted towers, feet and adapters.
- Crossbars, end caps and clamps.
- The ladder’s highest rail, hook or accessory.
- Any rotating, folding or adjustable component in its travel position.
Where to check
Check the lowest opening on every routine route, including the home garage, depot door, customer bays, parking structures and wash facilities. If a route varies, use the lowest known opening rather than the average. Do not rely on a generic “safe margin”; the appropriate clearance depends on the opening, vehicle movement and how accurately both heights were measured.
Load limits: rack rating versus van rating
Use the lower applicable limit after checking both the rack documentation and the vehicle owner’s manual. A rack’s capacity describes that rack under its specified mounting arrangement. It does not increase the van’s roof, axle or gross-vehicle limits.

Ford-specific example
Ford’s online van owner’s manual says to read and follow the roof-rack manufacturer’s instructions, distribute the load evenly and avoid exceeding the vehicle’s maximum front and rear axle loads. For the applicable Ford variant, it lists maximum roof loads of 419 lb (190 kg) for low roof, 331 lb (150 kg) for medium roof and 220 lb (100 kg) for high roof. Those values are Ford-specific and must not be presented as generic limits for all vans.
Include the rack, ladder, mounts, accessories and any other roof cargo when determining the loaded roof weight. If the manual distinguishes static and moving loads, follow that distinction exactly; if the rack instructions are more restrictive, use the rack’s restriction.
Choosing between racks that appear to fit
Once several systems pass the basic fitment check, compare them in the order that affects safety and usability:
| Decision axis | What to verify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Vehicle compatibility | Year, make, model, wheelbase, roof height and approved mounting method | Prevents a dimensional match from becoming an incorrect installation |
| Capacity | Rack rating, number of mounts and the van’s roof and axle limits | The usable limit is the most restrictive applicable value |
| Ladder support | Crossbar spacing, support inside ladder ends, rear overhang and loading direction | Determines stability and whether the ladder can be handled safely |
| Material and environment | Steel or aluminum construction, weight and corrosion resistance stated for that product | Changes roof payload consumption and suitability for weather exposure |
| Height and access | Loaded height versus every regular overhead opening | Prevents route, garage and bay-door conflicts |
When a universal or drilling-required rack is involved
Universal systems can be useful when a van is absent from a vehicle-specific catalog, but they shift more responsibility to the installer. Confirm the roof structure, permitted drilling areas, backing requirements, sealant, fastener type and corrosion protection in the instructions. Do not copy hole locations from a different wheelbase, roof height or rack series.

Before making a hole, place the rack on the roof or use a full-size layout. Recheck symmetry, roof taper, interior obstructions, wiring and the ladder’s support points. Photograph the marked layout and compare every location with the written instructions. If the roof structure or instructions are unclear, have a qualified installer verify the layout instead of improvising.

Measuring the catalog roof instead of the actual van
Published exterior dimensions may include curved or unusable areas. Fix this by measuring the approved mounting zone defined by the rack instructions.
Using the usual ladder instead of the heaviest one
A lighter daily ladder can hide a capacity problem. Measure and weigh the longest, heaviest ladder and all permanently attached accessories.
Putting the bars at the ladder ends
End-of-ladder support can create poor handling and may violate the rack’s intended span. Lay out the bars so they support the ladder well inside its ends, then verify the permitted spacing.
Ignoring rear overhang
Overhang can obstruct doors, cameras and lights or create a loading hazard. Measure it in the proposed position and inspect the van from the side and rear.

Checking bare-van height only
The rack and ladder can add substantial height. Measure the finished loaded assembly and compare it with the lowest routine opening.
Confusing rack capacity with vehicle capacity
A rack rating cannot override the owner’s manual or axle limits. Calculate the loaded roof weight and apply the lower applicable restriction.
Assuming a similar van is equivalent
Wheelbase, roof height, body taper and factory equipment can change fitment. Require an exact catalog match or written confirmation from the rack maker.

- Exact model year, make, model, wheelbase and roof height recorded.
- Rack fitment entry matches the vehicle configuration.
- Owner’s manual and rack installation instructions reviewed.
- Existing roof equipment and no-drill areas mapped.
- Longest ladder measured and heaviest ladder weighed.
- Rack reference points and approved mount locations identified.
- Crossbars support the ladder well inside both ends.
- Rear overhang measured and checked against doors, lights and cameras.
- Rack, ladder and accessory weight compared with both rack and vehicle limits.
- Finished loaded height measured.
- Lowest regular overhead opening identified and compared.
- Fasteners, backing, sealant and tightening procedure confirmed before drilling or assembly.
What a correct measurement result looks like
Your final worksheet should allow another person to answer five questions without guessing: Does this rack fit this exact van? Where do the mounts and crossbars go? Is the ladder supported inside its ends? Is the combined load within every applicable limit? Can the loaded van clear every regular overhead opening?
If any answer is “not established,” the measurement is incomplete. Resolve that item through the vehicle manual, the rack’s fitment and installation documents or a qualified installer before purchasing hardware or modifying the roof.
