Take a 5 m metric tape measure to each car, keep the seat, floor and parcel-shelf settings consistent, and record floor length, narrowest width, usable height, aperture size and sill dimensions. A published litre figure is useful for broad comparisons, but only a physical fit test tells you whether your stroller, suitcase, pet crate or wheelchair will go in and the tailgate will close.
Why the advertised litre figure can mislead you
Boot capacity is not a single universal measurement. Manufacturers use defined test conventions that make cars easier to compare, but the resulting number does not describe every practical loading problem.

The National Transport Authority of Ireland explains the VDA convention as follows: “The VDA figure is determined by filling the luggage space with blocks of volume of one litre, each measuring 200 x 100 x 50mm.” Its June 2024 Initial Suitability Inspection Manual gives the example that 420 blocks equal 420 litres. Each block is a standard cuboid, so the test rewards the total volume that can be packed inside the measurement boundary; it does not require a particular suitcase or stroller to pass through the tailgate opening.
GB/T 19514-2024 similarly defines reference volume as the maximum sum of standardized cuboid modules placed within the luggage-compartment measurement boundary, expressed in litres or cubic decimetres. These procedures are repeatable, yet a boot can still lose useful capacity to wheel arches, hinges, trim, seat-belt housings, a high sill or a narrow aperture.

Regulatory dimensions also depend on how the cabin is set. EU approval rules use the rear seats at their rear outermost positions, seat backs adjusted for a 25-degree torso angle and height-adjustable seats at their lowest position. A brochure number measured under that arrangement may not match the space you get with a tall driver, a child seat or a more upright rear bench.
There is no universal published percentage that converts advertised litres into “practically usable” litres. Treat the stated capacity as one data point, then measure the shape and test your own load.
What to take to the dealership
A basic kit is enough for most passenger cars:
- 5 m metric tape measure: A documented example is the STANLEY PowerLock, with a metric blade, Class II accuracy of ±0.5 mm at 1 m and a true-zero hook designed for inside and outside measurements. Availability and price vary by retailer, so verify those separately.
- Notebook or phone spreadsheet: Record every dimension immediately, including the configuration and date.
- Masking tape: Mark the exact endpoints when a second person is not available.
- Your real item: Bring the stroller, suitcase, crate, wheelchair or equipment you need to carry. A cardboard template with the item’s maximum dimensions is a useful backup.
- Phone camera: Photograph the seat position, floor setting, parcel shelf and any step left by folded seats.
Measure in millimetres. They are easier to compare than mixed centimetres and inches, and they expose small differences that can matter at an opening or between wheel arches.

Comparisons become unreliable when one car is measured with its shelf removed and another with it fitted, or when a rear seat is slid forward. Decide your reference configuration before opening the first tailgate.
Set the seats for real use
Put the front seats where the driver and passengers would genuinely sit. If you are comparing cars for a particular family, use the same driver seat position in each one. Record the rear-seat position; a sliding bench can change floor length substantially.

For a standards-style reference, note that EU approval measurements use the rear outermost seat position, a 25-degree torso angle and the lowest setting for height-adjustable seats. That setting is useful for understanding a published figure, but your own driving position should decide the practical measurement.
Choose a consistent floor and shelf setting
Decide whether the parcel shelf or cargo cover, boot liner, false floor and spare-wheel tray are installed. Use the same choice on every candidate. If the floor has upper and lower positions, measure both when either could affect your purchase. Photograph the setup so you can reproduce it later.
Measure the boot step by step
Have one person hold the tape and another read it where possible. Keep the tape level for horizontal measurements and square to the floor or opening for vertical ones.
- Open the tailgate and identify the reference surfaces. The rear face of the upright rear-seat back is the usual starting point for floor length. Do not measure to the front edge of a folded seat or to a loose mat.
- Measure floor length with the rear seats upright. Run the tape from the rear face of the seat back to the inside face of the tailgate. For a standards-style reference, the EU rule measures from a vertical plane tangent to the rear outermost point of the seat back to the rear internal pane, door or tailgate in the closed position, along a horizontal line at load-floor level. Record whether the seat back is upright, reclined or in a specified locking position.
- Measure the floor at its narrowest point. Take a reading between the wheel arches and inspect the full length for trim, hinges, seat-belt housings or other intrusions. The smallest clear width is the usable value, not the widest point near the tailgate.
- Measure the opening separately. Record the minimum width and minimum height of the tailgate aperture. Measure between the nearest trim or weather seals, not between exterior sheet-metal edges. An item can fit inside the cavity but fail at this opening.
- Measure usable height. With the parcel shelf installed, measure from the load floor to the underside of the shelf. If tall loads matter, remove the shelf and measure to the roof lining. Repeat for each floor position and note the height of a raised lip or side trim.
- Measure sill height and depth. Measure sill height from the ground to the loading edge. Then measure sill depth from the bumper edge to the load floor. A high or deep sill can make a heavy crate difficult to slide even when the internal dimensions are generous.
- Check the floor for a step or slope. Place the tape across any change in level and record the step height. With seats folded, note whether the result is flat, stepped or sloping toward the front seats.
- Test your actual load. Try a straight-in insertion first, then the rotations you would use in daily life. Check the tightest corner, wheel-arch clearance, tie-down locations and whether the tailgate closes without touching the item. Do not accept a diagonal-only fit if you cannot load the item that way in practice.
- Repeat the relevant seat configurations. Measure with rear seats upright, folded and, where the design allows, removed. Record the split (for example, whether one side can remain available for a passenger) and any restrictions on folding.
Use this comparison worksheet
Copy the table into a phone note or spreadsheet and complete one column for each car. Include the model year, body style, powertrain, trim and spare-wheel arrangement because each can alter floor height, seat travel or available storage.

Write the measurement conditions beside the table: shelf fitted or removed, floor position, seat position and whether a liner or spare-wheel tray was present. Without those notes, a later number may appear contradictory when the configuration changed.

Judge a boot on four separate axes
Do not rank cars by litres alone. Score each candidate on access, usable shape, capacity and flexibility.

Access is controlled by opening width and height, sill height, sill depth and the tailgate’s opening geometry. A narrow upper corner or a high lip can defeat a bulky item before the interior volume becomes relevant. Check the height of the opening at the point where your tallest item must pass, not only at the centre.
Usable shape
Use the narrowest floor width, not the maximum width, and note where wheel arches intrude. Measure the usable height under the parcel shelf if you normally keep it installed. Hinges, trim, seat-belt housings and a raised floor can consume space that a simple length-by-width estimate overlooks.
Capacity
Capacity combines measured length, width and height with the published litre figure and its method. A VDA number based on 200 × 100 × 50 mm one-litre blocks is comparable only when the competing figure uses a comparable convention. Record whether a manufacturer gives a seats-up, seats-folded or both figures, and whether the spare-wheel area is included.
Flexibility
Flexibility includes split-fold ratios, sliding-seat travel, floor positions, a removable parcel shelf, tie-down points and the ability to remove seats. Two cars with similar dimensions can serve different needs if one lets you carry a passenger beside a long load or leaves a flat floor when folded.

Test the item you actually carry
Strollers and wheeled equipment
Measure the folded length, width, height and the widest handle or wheel section. Try the orientation you would use at home: many items need to enter wheels-first, then rotate. Check whether the tailgate glass or trim contacts a handle when the item is pushed fully forward.
Suitcases and boxes
Use the case’s external dimensions, including wheels and handles. Test the largest case first, then place smaller pieces around it. A case that fits only diagonally may block the remaining usable floor or prevent the tailgate from latching.
Pet crates
Measure the crate at its widest and tallest points, including door hardware. Confirm that the opening allows the crate to pass without tipping and that the final position leaves ventilation space and does not press against the tailgate.
Wheelchairs and mobility equipment
Measure the folded frame, wheels and handles. Check the sill height and depth as carefully as the internal length; lifting over a deep sill can be the limiting factor. Look for tie-down points and a floor that does not force the chair to slide during braking.

Repeat measurements for every useful configuration
Measure the boot with the rear seats upright for ordinary passenger use. Fold the seats using the manufacturer’s normal release and record the resulting length, height, step and slope. If the seats are removable, measure with them removed only when you would realistically take them out; a theoretical maximum that requires tools may not be a practical capacity.

Check each split separately. A 60:40 or 40:20:40 arrangement can matter more than a small difference in litres because it determines whether a long object fits while two or three passengers remain seated. Record whether headrests must be removed, whether front seats need to move, and whether the folded backrests leave a level surface.
Common measurement mistakes and how to avoid them
- Measuring only the cavity: Always measure the aperture. The item must pass through the opening before it can occupy the internal volume.
- Using the widest point: Record the narrowest clear width between wheel arches and trim.
- Ignoring the shelf: A box may fit with the shelf removed but not under it. Record both heights when relevant.
- Mixing floor positions: A raised floor can reduce height while improving the loading step. Note the setting in every entry.
- Comparing unlike trims: Battery packs, four-wheel-drive hardware, a spare wheel or a different exhaust layout can change the floor. Confirm the exact model year, body style, powertrain and trim.
- Trusting a diagonal measurement: A diagonal can suggest a fit that is impossible to reproduce when loading. Try the real movement and close the tailgate.
- Measuring to loose surfaces: Keep the tape against the structural seat back, floor and tailgate surfaces rather than a removable mat or soft cargo liner.
- Failing to photograph the setup: Without a photo, you may not remember whether a shelf, tray or floor panel was installed.
How to turn the notes into a buying decision
- Set non-negotiable limits. Write the minimum opening width and height, internal length, usable height and maximum sill height your item requires.
- Eliminate access failures first. If the item cannot pass the aperture or clear the sill, a larger advertised volume does not help.
- Compare the narrowest usable dimensions. Check wheel-arch width, floor steps and the height under the shelf before considering total litres.
- Check passenger and seat requirements. Confirm that the needed seat split and front-seat position still leave enough length.
- Use litres as a cross-check. Record the stated method and compare only like-for-like conventions. Treat unexplained figures cautiously.
- Repeat the load test on the exact car you will buy. A dealer demonstrator may have a different trim, floor, battery, spare-wheel arrangement or body style from the vehicle on order.
Keep the completed worksheet with the vehicle’s specification sheet. If a dealer changes the floor panel, supplies a temporary spare wheel or swaps the trim, recheck the affected dimensions before signing.
What the standards do—and do not—tell you
Standardized modules and regulatory reference points are valuable because they make manufacturer figures reproducible. The VDA example of 420 one-litre blocks means 420 litres under that block-filling procedure; it does not mean that a 420-litre rectangular box can be placed inside. GB/T 19514-2024’s cuboid-module definition has the same basic limitation: it reports the maximum module volume within a defined boundary.
EU approval geometry supplies another reproducible reference by specifying seat location, backrest angle and seat height. Those settings are not a guarantee of the space available in every market’s brochure or in your own driving position. Check the exact market, model year and body style before treating a published number as directly comparable.
