The most reliable paper car is built from a printed or hand-drawn net: cut the solid outline, keep its tabs, score and crease the fold lines, then join the faces with glue or tape in the order shown by the template. Cardstock or other thick paper makes a sturdier body. A simple net can be completed with scissors and adhesive; a detailed papercraft model may add many numbered parts and requires slower, sequential assembly.
What a paper car actually is
A paper car is a three-dimensional model made from a two-dimensional template, often called a net. The flat net contains the faces that become the hood, roof, sides, rear and sometimes the underside. Narrow tabs around those faces are folded inward and attached to neighboring faces. The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) uses this net-and-tab method in its cardboard-car activity.

This project makes a folded craft or display model. Do not assume it will roll, carry weight or survive rough play unless the particular template supplies working axles, wheels and reinforcement. The Nissan, Scotch and IET resources support constructing a model vehicle, not a guaranteed working toy.
Choose the right kind of design
Pick the template before buying or cutting materials. A quick classroom craft and a detailed branded papercraft model can both be called paper cars, but they demand different amounts of cutting, scoring and patience.

Gather materials without overcomplicating the project

Keep the work surface flat, dry and large enough to spread the uncut sheet beside the growing model. Have scrap paper available for testing adhesive and for catching marker bleed.
Safety and setup before cutting
Scissors are the default cutting tool for a simple paper car. If the chosen pattern calls for a craft knife, an adult should do the cutting for a child; Bostik’s paper-car activity specifically directs a parent to handle the craft knife and lists scissors as an alternative. Use a cutting mat or other protected surface, keep fingers away from the blade path and return the knife to a safe position between cuts.
Read the entire template once before making the first cut. Identify the page orientation, any numbered parts, the adhesive symbols and whether the design distinguishes mountain folds from valley folds. If the printer offers a scaling choice, use the template’s intended size; do not select “fit to page” automatically when the instructions depend on a stated scale. When no scale is specified, simply preserve the printed proportions.

Step 1: Select, print or draw the net
For the fastest result, download a car net from a source such as Nissan, Scotch or the IET and print it on the recommended sheet. A hand-drawn net works when no template suits the project, but it needs careful planning: each edge that will meet another edge must be the same length, and every tab needs enough area for adhesive without covering a window or wheel detail.
- Choose a simple or detailed design based on the maker’s cutting and folding experience.
- Check that the complete net fits on the chosen sheet with a margin around the outside lines.
- Print at the template’s intended size, or draw the net lightly in pencil before darkening the final lines.
- Mark the top, front and rear on your own drawing so the body cannot be assembled backwards.
- Keep the instructions beside the sheet; detailed Nissan models use a prescribed sequence rather than a “glue anything that looks close” approach.
Step 2: Decorate the flat sheet
Coloring before assembly is optional, but it is usually the easiest time to reach the roof, doors, bumpers and windows. Bostik places coloring before the final build for this reason. Use a light touch around fold lines so thick marker ink does not crack the paper when the crease is made. Leave tabs mostly clear: decoration on an adhesive surface can weaken the bond.
If the template already includes printed graphics, add only details that will not obscure line symbols or part numbers. For a custom design, draw headlights, grilles, door seams and wheel centers while the net is flat. Separate mirrors, spoilers or other small pieces can be colored on their own scraps and attached at the end.

Most mistakes begin when a maker treats every line as a cutting line. Scotch identifies solid lines as cuts and dotted lines as folds. Nissan likewise uses bold cutting lines and mountain or valley fold indications. Preserve every tab between the body faces unless the instructions explicitly tell you to remove it.

- Solid or bold outer line: cut along it to release the net or remove a window opening.
- Dotted, dashed or otherwise marked fold line: score and crease it; do not cut through it.
- Tab: leave attached, fold inward and apply adhesive or tape where indicated.
- Mountain fold: the crease rises toward you, like the ridge of a small hill.
- Valley fold: the crease sinks away from you, like the inside of a V.
- Number or arrow: follow the template’s assembly order rather than inventing a new one.
Templates do not all use identical symbols. When a diagram’s notation differs from this overview, the diagram that came with your chosen design takes priority.
Step 4: Cut the outline and openings
- Place the sheet on a stable surface and begin with the large outside perimeter.
- Cut on the solid or bold line, keeping the blade or scissor tips on the waste side of the line.
- Leave every joining tab connected to its panel.
- Cut windows, wheel openings or interior slots only where the template marks them.
- For a tight corner, make several short scissor cuts instead of forcing one long turn; this reduces accidental tears.
- After cutting, compare the loose net with the printed diagram. Missing a tab now is easier to correct than discovering it after glue has been applied.
Detailed designs can contain narrow tabs and small separate parts. Sort those pieces on the table in numerical or positional order. If a part is not labeled, keep it beside the area of the net where its shape appears to fit instead of trimming it further.
Step 5: Score and crease every fold
Scoring makes a controlled hinge without cutting the card. Nissan’s manual gives the essential technique: Place a ruler along the fold lines – ie. the ‘mountain fold’ or the ‘valley fold’ – and fold carefully.
Use a ruler as a straightedge and a blunt stylus or used ballpoint to trace each marked fold with light pressure. The goal is an indentation, not a groove cut through the sheet.

- Align the ruler exactly with one marked fold line.
- Trace the line once or twice with the blunt tool, using enough pressure to mark the card but not tear it.
- Lift the ruler and bend the panel along the crease.
- Check whether the diagram calls for a mountain or valley direction; reverse the crease if the first bend is wrong.
- Pre-fold the tabs and major faces, then flatten the net again for assembly.
Pre-folding reveals whether the hood, roof and side faces meet as expected. If two edges do not align, inspect the cut and fold lines before adding adhesive. Forcing a misaligned joint usually twists the entire body.

Step 6: Assemble the body in the marked order
There is no universal glue order. Nissan’s detailed manual tells the maker to glue indicated margins sequentially. Scotch’s simpler automobile instructions use tape on the white tabs, starting at the front and finishing at the back. Follow the sequence printed on your chosen template.
- Identify the first tab or margin in the diagram and apply a thin, even layer of paper glue, or place a short piece of tape on the indicated side.
- Bring the adjoining face into position without stretching the paper. Match corners and edge lines before pressing.
- Hold the joint briefly while the adhesive grabs, then move to the next numbered tab.
- Work around the front, roof, sides and rear in the shown progression. On a tape-based pattern, Scotch’s sequence begins at the front and ends at the back.
- Keep unused tabs folded inward so they do not catch on neighboring edges.
- Wipe away excess glue immediately with a clean, barely damp cloth; wet paper can buckle.
Glue gives a clean exterior when tabs are hidden inside, while tape is convenient when the template provides broad white tabs and the model needs to be handled soon. Do not combine methods indiscriminately: tape can prevent a glued tab from sitting flat, and glue under a tape joint can make the paper slide.

Once the main shell is closed, attach separate parts such as wing mirrors, wheels printed as discs, bumpers or a spoiler if the template includes them. Nissan notes that one of its models is complete after the wing mirrors are attached. Test-fit each small piece first, then apply a minimal amount of adhesive to its designated tab or edge.

Simple build versus detailed papercraft: what changes?

These differences describe the cited Nissan and Scotch designs; they are not a rule that every template from either source uses the same number of parts.
Troubleshoot the problems that cause most failures

Ways to adapt the project for different makers
For a first attempt
Choose a one-piece automobile net with broad tabs. Use cardstock, scissors and tape or a glue stick. Skip intricate window cutouts and add color before assembly. The objective is accurate cutting and folding, not a high-detail finish.
For a classroom or group
Print several identical nets and demonstrate one fold before distributing scissors. Ask students to circle solid cut lines and underline fold lines on a spare copy. Keep the line key visible, and reserve craft-knife work for an adult rather than making it part of the student activity.

Use a detailed Nissan-style model, score every crease, dry-fit the shell and assemble one numbered margin at a time. Photograph or label loose parts before adhesive is applied. A ruler and blunt stylus are more valuable than adding extra decoration that could hide alignment marks.
For an original design
Prototype the net on ordinary paper. Close the body without glue, check that matching edges meet and only then transfer the corrected pattern to card. Keep tabs generous enough to hold adhesive, and mark mountain and valley folds explicitly so another maker can reproduce the shape.
What the finished model can and cannot promise
A well-cut, well-creased net can produce a recognizable paper vehicle with clean faces and attached details. The materials and instructions cited here do not establish a standard build time, a universal age threshold, a durability rating or a learning-outcome statistic, so none is stated as a promise. Likewise, a paper body alone does not prove that the car rolls. Working wheels require a template designed for that function and additional construction beyond the folded shell.
The dependable formula is therefore simple: select a suitable net, print it at the intended size, decorate while flat, cut only solid lines, preserve the tabs, score and fold carefully, then join faces in the template’s own order. That sequence works whether the project uses glue, tape, a classroom handout or a more intricate named-model pattern.
