Maintain a Harley-Davidson by following the service schedule for its exact model and year, checking key systems between services and before rides, and adjusting maintenance when the motorcycle sees severe use or long-term storage. Harley-Davidson’s owner’s manuals and maintenance schedules provide the controlling intervals and specifications; general guidance cannot supply universal pressures, fluid capacities, oil grades, or adjustment values.
Start with the manual for your exact motorcycle
Find the owner’s manual and maintenance schedule for your motorcycle’s model year on Harley-Davidson’s service plans and manuals page. Use the model-specific documents for scheduled work, tire pressures, fluid types and capacities, adjustment values, and procedures. Confirm the model and year before buying oil, filters, tires, belts, or tools; parts and specifications are not universal across the range.

Harley-Davidson’s 2024 Owner’s Manual warns: “Lack of regular maintenance at the recommended intervals can affect the safe operation of your motorcycle, which could result in death or serious injury.” That warning is specific to the 2024 manual, but the practical point applies broadly: keep to the schedule that matches your motorcycle.

Use the pre-ride checklist in your manual. Harley-Davidson’s 2024 and 2025 manuals illustrate the main systems to inspect; their lists are examples, not replacements for the checklist for your own model.
#1 Best Overall

- Maxima V-Twin Full Synthetic is an ester based full synthetic motorcycle oil engineered to lower operating temperatures, reduce wear, increase film strength and offer extended protection
- Maxima V-Twin Heavy-Duty Transmission & Gear Oil is a high-quality, mineral based motorcycle gear oil, the Primary Fluid is a high-quality, mineral based motorcycle gear oil formulated for high-performance transmissions and primary chaincases
- Hiflofiltro RC Oil Filters are made using the worlds highest quality materials, with test results proving a 28% longer service life than OE and competitor brands, and feature a 17mm cross drilled nut for easy installation, removal, and lock wiring
- Tires and wheels: Check pressure against the manual’s specification, then look for damage, abnormal wear, or other visible problems. Harley-Davidson’s 2025 Owner’s Manual warns that excessively worn, unbalanced, improperly inflated, overloaded, or damaged tires can fail and adversely affect stability and handling, with potentially fatal consequences.
- Drive system: Inspect the belt for wear or damage and check tension as directed in the manual. If your motorcycle has a chain, follow its model-specific inspection and adjustment instructions instead.
- Brakes: Check that the controls operate correctly; inspect pads, discs, lines, fluid condition, and leaks as specified. Do not ride if braking is impaired or a leak is present.
- Controls and steering: Check throttle, clutch where fitted, cables, and steering for smooth operation, damage, or binding.
- Fluids: Check engine oil and any other specified levels, including coolant where applicable. Use the manual’s checking method and specified fluid.
- Lights and fuel: Confirm lights and signals work and that you have enough fuel for the ride.
These checks are visual and operational checks, not a reason to make adjustments without the right procedure. If a check reveals a problem you cannot diagnose or repair safely, arrange service before riding.
Follow the oil-service interval for your model
Harley-Davidson’s general maintenance guidance recommends an oil and filter change at the first 1,000 miles and every 5,000 miles afterward. The same guidance says to change oil more frequently in hard, dusty, or cold conditions and before extended storage. Treat those figures as general manufacturer guidance, not a universal schedule: confirm the interval, oil type, filter, capacity, and procedure in your motorcycle’s exact manual.

Harley-Davidson’s 2025 Maintenance Service Interval Checklists identify conditions that may call for more frequent attention, including:
Rank #3
- Formulated specifically for V-Twin engines
- Approved for H-D V-Twin engines, transmissions and primaries
- Superior protection and oxidative stability at any temperature
- Excellent clutch feel and clutch protection
- Shear stable, ester-fortified formula maintains oil viscosity and film thickness
- Extreme temperatures or dusty environments
- Mountainous or rough roads
- Long periods of storage
- Short trips and heavy stop-and-go traffic
- Poor fuel quality
Consult your motorcycle’s schedule to determine which intervals or tasks change. The checklist is identified as a 2025 document and bears a Harley-Davidson publication date of 27 March 2026; its recommendations should not be assumed to apply identically to every model year.
Prepare the motorcycle for extended storage
Storage preparation is part of maintenance. Harley-Davidson’s storage guidance focuses on limiting corrosion, preserving the battery, and reducing fuel-system deposits. Its general maintenance guidance also advises changing oil and the filter before winter or other extended storage. Follow the storage procedure for your model, since the right steps depend on the motorcycle and its equipment.

Never store a gasoline-filled motorcycle where ignition sources are present. Use the manufacturer’s storage guidance for fuel handling and battery care rather than improvising with a procedure intended for another model.

Routine checks and maintenance may be suitable for an owner who has the tools, service data, and mechanical qualifications the job requires. Harley-Davidson’s schedule material says designated tasks should be performed by an authorized dealer unless the owner has the proper tools, information, and qualifications.

Use an authorized Harley-Davidson service dealer when the schedule designates dealer work, the procedure requires proprietary tools or technical information you lack, or the repair exceeds your skills. Harley-Davidson says its authorized dealers have service technicians, proprietary tools, genuine parts, and access to real-time engineering updates; listed services include tire work, brake work, and oil changes. That is a practical option, not a requirement for every maintenance task.
