Linux is gaining ground in cars, especially through Automotive Grade Linux (AGL), a shared open-source platform for connected-car and software-defined-vehicle development. AGL has reported deployments in Toyota, Honda and Mercedes-Benz brands, and its stated scope now extends well beyond infotainment. That is evidence of real adoption and a growing ecosystem—not proof that Linux has become the standard operating system in every car or for every vehicle function.
What Automotive Grade Linux is—and what it is not
Automotive Grade Linux is a Linux Foundation collaborative project. It brings automakers, suppliers and technology companies together around a reusable, Linux-based software platform for automotive applications. The aim is to reduce duplicated engineering work and fragmentation: companies can start from shared software rather than independently building every foundational layer.

AGL’s Unified Code Base combines an operating system, middleware and an application framework. It is a starting point for automotive projects, not a finished, identical system that every participating automaker must ship. AGL says its goal is to develop 70–80% of the starting point for a production project. That figure describes a project goal for reusable groundwork; it is not a percentage of vehicles running AGL, a market-share estimate, or a guarantee that a production vehicle needs no further engineering.

Evidence of adoption: deployments, membership and reuse goals
The Linux Foundation’s 2024 annual report said AGL systems were live in Toyota, Honda and Mercedes-Benz brands. That is meaningful evidence of production use, but the report does not establish deployment across every model, market or vehicle system from those brands.
AGL’s project page reports more than 150 members, including 10 automakers. Membership indicates participation in the ecosystem; it should not be read as a count of companies shipping AGL in production vehicles.

The 2023 report’s 70% figure and AGL’s current 70–80% goal are not competing market measurements. Both describe the intended share of a production project’s starting point that the project aims to provide.
What AGL is intended to run in a vehicle
AGL began with infotainment, but its stated scope now includes a broader set of connected-car and software-defined-vehicle applications:

- Instrument clusters and heads-up displays

- Advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS)
- Functional-safety and autonomous-driving software
These are areas AGL says it covers; that scope alone does not show that a particular AGL component has been deployed or certified for every listed function. For safety-critical systems, a program still needs to assess the required safety evidence, integration and certification for its intended use.
How AGL is adapting to software-defined vehicles
On 5 December 2025, the Linux Foundation announced AGL SoDeV, a reference platform aimed at software-defined vehicles. Its architectural goals include consolidating electronic control units (ECUs), separating software from hardware through virtualization and hardware abstraction, and integrating with cloud-based development and services.

The announced reference platform combines AGL with Linux Containers, VirtIO, Xen, Yocto, Zephyr and ELISA. In practical terms, this is an effort to bring together vehicle software, virtualization and development infrastructure so software can be developed with less dependence on a particular ECU’s hardware. The Linux Foundation described the platform as enabling “software-first development, decoupled from hardware constraints.” The announcement establishes the platform’s direction; it does not by itself prove that vehicles have already adopted this architecture at scale.

How to compare AGL with Android Automotive or QNX
AGL, Android Automotive and QNX should not be compared as if a single market-share number or feature list settles which is best. The sources cited here do not provide a complete, current market-share dataset or a full technical comparison of those platforms. A useful evaluation is tied to the vehicle program and the specific function being built.
- Openness and licensing: Check the licenses and obligations for the exact components the program plans to use. AGL is a Linux-based open-source collaborative platform; the other platforms’ licensing terms are not established by the sources cited here.
- Reusable code and OEM control: Determine which software can be shared across vehicle lines and which parts the automaker needs to own, customize or maintain. AGL’s stated model emphasizes a common starting point, not identical finished systems.
- System scope: Identify whether the need is infotainment, a cluster, telematics or a safety-related function. AGL states that its scope spans these areas, but a platform’s stated scope is not proof of qualification for a particular production use.
- Hardware abstraction and virtualization: For a software-defined vehicle program, ask how the software is separated from ECU hardware, how workloads are isolated, and what migration between hardware generations requires. AGL SoDeV explicitly targets these concerns.
- Safety and certification: For ADAS or other safety-related workloads, request evidence tied to the exact platform, configuration and intended safety function; a general-purpose platform claim is not a substitute.
- Development and lifecycle integration: Compare cloud and OTA workflows, developer tooling, supplier support and long-term update responsibilities for the specific program. AGL’s recent work and SoDeV direction include cloud-native development and cloud integration, but a complete comparison with Android Automotive or QNX is not established here.
Is Linux becoming the standard in cars?
The strongest supportable answer is that Linux is gaining influence as a shared automotive software foundation, with AGL providing an organized project, reported production deployments and an expanding technical scope. It is not established as the sole or universal automotive operating system. AGL membership, project goals and named deployments show momentum, but none supplies a complete measure of Linux’s share of the global vehicle market.
