Why Ford Canceled the Torino King Cobra—and What Happened to Its Prototypes

Ford canceled its planned 1970 Torino King Cobra amid a tougher NASCAR homologation rule, reported handling problems and a retreat from factory racing. Histories disagree on whether two or three prototypes were built, and their present-day whereabouts are not fully established.

Ford canceled the Torino King Cobra before it raced in NASCAR or entered regular production. The planned 1970 aero car faced a tougher homologation rule, reported high-speed handling problems and Ford’s retreat from factory racing support. Histories disagree on whether Ford built two or three prototypes; accounts trace several cars into later private hands, but do not establish the current whereabouts of every one.

What the Torino King Cobra was meant to do

Ford developed the Torino King Cobra as an aerodynamic NASCAR contender for the 1970 season, intended to answer Chrysler’s Charger Daytona and Plymouth Superbird. It was conceived as a successor to the Torino Talladega’s role, not as a regular-production model for showroom buyers. The project produced test cars, but the King Cobra never raced in NASCAR. Hot Rod and ClassicCars.com Journal describe the program and its intended purpose.

Why Ford canceled the King Cobra

No single factor fully explains the cancellation. Published histories point to a more demanding NASCAR homologation requirement, reported instability at speed and Ford’s changing commitment to factory-backed racing. The accounts are retrospective; they do not cite a primary Ford cancellation memo or a published engineering report.

NASCAR raised the homologation minimum

Homologation required a manufacturer to make street versions of a racing model available in order to qualify it for competition. Hot Rod reports that NASCAR raised the minimum from 500 to 3,000 street cars for the 1970 season. The larger run made the specialized aero model harder to justify, especially given the reported cost and limited public demand for thousands of such cars. The 3,000 figure and its effect on the project are reported by Hot Rod; it should not be treated as a directly verified NASCAR publication here.

Testing reportedly exposed a handling problem

Hot Rod attributes to owner Steve Honnell a recollection that Cale Yarborough found the car “squirrelly” at speed. In that account, the pointed nose generated substantial downforce, while the roofline and decklid did not restore airflow at the rear, leaving the back end light. FordMuscle also cites rear-end lightness among the reasons the car did not proceed. These are retrospective reports, not a publicly documented Ford engineering finding. Hot Rod; FordMuscle.

Ford was backing away from factory racing

The project also met a shift in Ford’s motorsports priorities. Hot Rod describes Ford retreating from full-scale factory racing support, while ClassicCars.com Journal connects the cancellation period to Bunkie Knudsen’s firing and Lee Iacocca’s succession. Those developments help explain the broader change in direction, but the available accounts do not establish that one executive or event alone killed the King Cobra. How many prototypes were built?

The published accounts do not agree, so the safest answer is two or three reported prototypes. Two cars are discussed across the histories; a third is reported but not consistently confirmed.

What happened to the cars after cancellation?

Published histories trace cars through racing-related custody and private ownership, but they are not a verified current registry. Their accounts distinguish individual cars imperfectly, so the ownership stories should be read as reported histories rather than proof of where every prototype is today.

The Holman Moody-associated car

Hot Rod reports that the third car came from Holman Moody and sat after the program ended. Steve Honnell reportedly had it by the end of 1970, drove it on the street for 15 years and kept it in excellent, unrestored condition. That account identifies a historical custodian; it does not establish the car’s present location or ownership. Hot Rod.

Cars associated with Bud Moore

Hot Rod says two cars went from Kar Kraft to Bud Moore. ClassicCars.com Journal recounts one Moore-associated car with a damaged nose that was reportedly repaired with standard Torino sheetmetal, later used as a police officer’s daily driver and eventually brought to a museum in Sevierville, Tennessee. The same article describes another King Cobra recovered from a field in South Carolina. The published account does not provide a comprehensive present-day identification and location record for the cars. Hot Rod; ClassicCars.com Journal.

A reported production-version car is a separate case

Ford Authority’s 2022 auction preview covered a King Cobra production-version car, described with a 429 Cobra Jet engine, a reported 837 original miles and documentation. The preview traced its ownership through Bud Moore, Jacky Jones and Brett Torino. That is a distinct car story from the prototype histories, and the details describe the car as reported in 2022—not its current mileage, ownership or availability. Ford Authority.

What the historical accounts can—and cannot—establish

The King Cobra was a canceled NASCAR project, not a model put into regular production. The record supports an intended 1970 competition role, multiple reasons for cancellation and two or three reported prototypes. It also preserves several ownership and recovery stories, but does not confirm a definitive total or the current whereabouts of every prototype. For context, past sale coverage is historical: Ford Authority reported a 2017 listing tied to the intended homologation car, and FordMuscle covered a 2013 sale claim; neither establishes present availability or value.
