For long-term reliability, maintain a 6.7L Power Stroke according to the owner’s manual for your truck’s exact model year, configuration and market. Use oil that meets Ford’s required specification and viscosity, follow the Intelligent Oil-Life Monitor, replace both fuel filters on the correct schedule, and keep up with inspections. Towing, idling, dust, short trips and temperature extremes can mean more frequent service. Ford’s 2025 Super Duty schedule is a useful example—not a universal schedule for every 6.7L truck.

Start with the schedule for your exact truck

There is no single maintenance interval that applies to every 6.7L Power Stroke. Model year, equipment, market and operating conditions affect the schedule and specifications. Use the owner’s manual for your VIN or vehicle configuration, and check the instrument-cluster messages. If a general interval in this article differs from your truck’s manual, follow the truck-specific guidance.

Ford’s 2025 Super Duty manual provides a concrete reference point for newer trucks. Its listed intervals below are examples for that model year and should not be transferred automatically to older or differently configured Super Duty models. Ford’s 2025 Scheduled Maintenance page is the place to verify the specific schedule.

When comparing maintenance plans, compare like with like: model year and configuration, normal or severe use, oil specification and viscosity for the truck and climate, and the monitor- or manual-based interval versus a generic fixed rule. A schedule written for one version of a Super Duty may not match another. Likewise, two oils with the same viscosity grade are not necessarily equivalent if only one meets Ford’s required specification.

Know whether your use counts as severe

Severe service is not limited to commercial trucks or off-road use. Ford’s examples include frequent or extended idling; low-speed driving or stationary operation; heavy traffic; dusty or off-road conditions; towing; and sustained high-speed driving at gross vehicle weight. The 2025 schedule also flags short trips of less than 5–10 miles, temperature extremes and heavy loads. Ford’s oil guidance identifies sustained temperatures below -23 °C (-9 °F) or above 38 °C (100 °F) as severe operating conditions.

These examples matter because a truck’s workload is not captured by mileage alone. A pickup that spends time idling, takes frequent short trips, operates in dust or regularly tows may not be following the same service pattern as a truck used for longer, lighter trips. If several of Ford’s severe-use examples describe your routine, use the severe-service items in your own manual rather than relying on a normal-use interval or a generic rule of thumb. The exact trigger and maintenance interval still depend on the truck’s schedule.

Reassess the category if the way you use the truck changes. A move from occasional towing to frequent heavy towing, or a change from highway trips to short trips and extended idling, can make the severe-service schedule more relevant. Do not shorten intervals by guessing at a number: consult the manual’s severe-use instructions for the model year and configuration.

Choose oil by specification, viscosity and conditions

For a 2025 6.7L diesel, Ford says to use oil that meets the defined specification and viscosity grade. The manual recommends Motorcraft oil or, if it is unavailable, oil of the recommended viscosity that meets Ford specification WSS-M2C171-F1. Viscosity alone is not enough: an oil with a familiar grade is not a substitute for the required Ford specification.

Ford’s 2025 6.7L diesel oil specification page is from a Canadian-market manual variant. It directs owners to choose viscosity from the chart for the expected temperature range, lists SAE 5W-40 for severe duty, identifies alternatives for B20-max biodiesel blends, and lists SAE 0W-40 for extreme cold. Check the chart and fuel-blend guidance in your own manual before selecting oil; do not assume these listed grades cover every model year or operating condition.

That means the selection process has more than one check: first, confirm that the oil meets the Ford specification; then confirm that its viscosity grade is recommended for the expected temperature range and fuel blend. Do not choose based on brand, price or viscosity alone. If the truck will operate in unusual cold or severe conditions, use the appropriate chart and guidance rather than assuming the everyday choice applies.

That Canadian-market page gives an oil capacity of 14.2 L (15.0 qt), including the filter. Treat that as a specification for the page’s 2025 manual variant, not as a universal fill quantity for all 6.7L trucks. Confirm capacity and the correct procedure in your vehicle’s manual when servicing the engine. The capacity figure is useful when planning a service, but should not be used to override a different quantity listed for another model year or configuration.

Skip supplemental oil additives

Ford says supplemental engine-oil additives are unnecessary and could cause engine damage that is not covered by the vehicle warranty. Use oil meeting the required specification instead of trying to alter the oil with an additive. An additive does not replace the need to select the correct oil grade or to change the oil and filter when the monitor calls for service.

Use the oil-life monitor, and respond to severe use

The Intelligent Oil-Life Monitor estimates when an oil change is due based on how the vehicle is used. Ford describes it this way in the 2025 Scheduled Maintenance guidance: “Your vehicle has an Intelligent Oil-Life Monitor that determines when you should change the engine oil based on how you use your vehicle.” When the instrument cluster displays OIL CHANGE REQUIRED, change the engine oil and filter, then reset the monitor after service as directed by the manual. The monitor is the routine timing guide; it is not a reason to ignore a warning message or the severe-service schedule.

Ford’s 2023 6.7L Power Stroke service tip gives a fallback if the display resets prematurely or becomes inoperative: change the oil six months or 5,000 miles after the previous change, and do not exceed one year or 10,000 miles between changes. Those figures are the service tip’s guidance for that monitor problem, not a replacement for the manual for every model year. The same tip describes substantially shorter intervals for severe duty; consult your own manual for the applicable interval rather than inferring one from a normal-use maximum.

Do not treat the one-year or 10,000-mile maximum as a target for every truck. It is a ceiling in the cited 2023 service tip when the monitor is inoperative or resets prematurely, and severe duty can call for earlier service. Under normal operation, the monitor calculates timing based on use. Follow the messages and the truck-specific schedule, and confirm the right procedure if the monitor does not behave as expected.

Practical oil-service sequence

  1. Before buying oil: verify the specification, viscosity for the expected temperatures, fuel-blend guidance and capacity in the manual for your truck.
  2. At the service point: change both the oil and filter when the monitor calls for service, or use the appropriate manual guidance if the monitor is not functioning correctly.
  3. After service: reset the Intelligent Oil-Life Monitor as the manual directs. If it resets unexpectedly or is inoperative, use the model-appropriate fallback guidance and arrange to restore correct monitor operation.
  4. Reassess your interval: if your use includes severe conditions, follow the severe-service schedule instead of assuming the normal-use timing applies.

Keeping the oil receipt or service record with the date and odometer reading makes it easier to determine when the previous change occurred if the monitor needs attention. Record the oil specification and grade as well as the filter service, so a later owner or technician can see what was used rather than relying on memory.

Replace both fuel filters—not just one

Ford identifies two fuel filters on the 6.7L diesel: one mounted on top of the engine and another inside the diesel fuel conditioner module. Both are part of the maintenance requirement. Ford warns that missed filter maintenance can contribute to engine-performance problems and fuel-injection-system damage. Fuel with high impurity levels may require more frequent replacement.

For 2025 diesel Super Duty vehicles, Ford lists fuel-filter replacement at 30,000 miles under the regular schedule and 15,000 miles for diesel severe service. These are 2025 schedule values, not a universal interval for all 6.7L Power Stroke trucks. The detailed Ford fuel-filter procedure page is from a different, older model-specific manual variant. Confirm the interval, compatible filters and procedure against the manual for your truck before ordering parts or performing the work; exact part numbers and service steps vary with configuration.

When planning the service, make sure the estimate or parts list accounts for both locations. Replacing only the engine-mounted filter, for example, would leave the other scheduled filter unaddressed. Because part numbers and procedures depend on the truck, identify the model year and configuration before purchasing compatible 6.7 Power Stroke fuel filters. If fuel contamination is suspected, consult Ford’s applicable guidance or a qualified technician instead of assuming the ordinary interval is sufficient.

Fuel-filter service checks

  • Confirm that the service covers both the engine-mounted filter and the filter in the diesel fuel conditioner module.
  • Use parts specified for the model year and configuration rather than choosing by engine displacement alone.
  • Shorten the replacement interval only as directed by the applicable schedule or when fuel quality and contamination guidance call for it.
  • Follow the truck-specific procedure. Do not infer a priming, drain or installation sequence from a different manual variant.
  • Keep the date and mileage for both filters in the same service record, including whether the truck was being maintained on a severe-service interval.

Use the 2025 schedule as an example, not a universal chart

The following figures are from Ford’s 2025 Super Duty scheduled-maintenance guidance. They help illustrate the breadth of the maintenance plan, but an owner of another model year must verify each interval in the correct manual. “At each indicated oil-change interval” means inspect the listed systems when the schedule calls for that check; it does not mean replace every part at every oil change.

Item 2025 Super Duty schedule example How to apply it
Diesel fuel filters Replace at 30,000 miles; 15,000 miles for diesel severe service. Applies to both fuel filters; verify the truck-specific schedule and procedure.
Engine air filter Replace at 30,000 miles. Dusty or severe conditions may affect service needs; use the manual’s inspection guidance.
Cabin air filter Replace at 20,000 miles. Verify the interval for the vehicle’s equipment and model year.
Diesel air-inlet foam filter Replace at 50,000 miles. Check the schedule for the exact truck and applicable equipment.
Coolant Initial replacement at 10 years or 200,000 miles, then every five years or 100,000 miles. Use the 2025 manual’s interval only as an example; check the correct coolant and schedule for your truck.

The 2025 schedule’s coolant figures are another example of why a maintenance chart needs a model-year label. The first replacement is listed at 10 years or 200,000 miles, followed by five years or 100,000 miles; do not assume that interval or coolant specification applies to another 6.7L truck. The same principle applies to filters: a replacement interval is not interchangeable merely because the engine displacement matches.

Inspect the systems that protect the truck between replacements

The 2025 schedule calls for a broad set of checks at indicated oil-change intervals. These inspections can reveal wear or a developing issue before it becomes a breakdown. Follow the schedule and have a qualified technician assess anything damaged, leaking or operating abnormally.

  • Tires and wheels: check tire condition, wear and rotation needs, and inspect the wheels. Tire wear and condition are part of the scheduled check; rotation is listed as a maintenance item, so use the schedule and vehicle-specific instructions for timing.
  • Brakes: inspect the braking system rather than waiting for a noise or warning to become severe.
  • Coolant system: check coolant concentration, freeze protection and level, and inspect hoses. The schedule calls for condition checks as well as eventual replacement; these are separate tasks.
  • Exhaust: inspect the exhaust system and heat shields.
  • Steering and suspension: inspect components for condition and wear.
  • Driveline: inspect the front axle and U-joints on applicable four-wheel-drive models.
  • Air filtration: check the cabin and engine air filters as scheduled and account for dusty use. The 2025 schedule also lists a diesel air-inlet foam filter replacement.
  • Diesel exhaust fluid: include it in the scheduled checks and respond to the vehicle’s messages.

These checks are not all replacement intervals. The schedule distinguishes inspection from replacement, so do not replace serviceable components simply because an inspection is due. A check is an opportunity to identify condition, wear or a need for attention; the specified replacement interval still comes from the truck’s manual.

Dust is relevant to the maintenance plan, not just to how clean the truck looks. Ford includes dusty and off-road operation among severe-use examples, and the schedule includes air-filter checks and replacement intervals. If the truck works in dusty conditions, pay attention to the manual’s inspection guidance and severe-service category rather than treating the ordinary schedule as automatically sufficient.

Build a maintenance record that matches the vehicle

Record the date, odometer reading, oil and filter service, both fuel-filter services, inspections and any work performed. Note whether the truck’s use has changed—for example, a move from commuting to frequent towing—because that can change which schedule applies. Keeping receipts or a service log also helps the next technician identify what was installed and when.

For oil, include the specification and viscosity grade rather than writing only the brand. For filters, note whether both fuel-filter locations were serviced and which compatible parts were used. For inspections, record findings that required follow-up as well as work completed. This detail can prevent uncertainty about whether a scheduled item was inspected, replaced or simply discussed.

Before a service appointment or parts purchase, have the model year, engine, configuration and relevant manual information available. This is especially useful for oil capacity and grade, fuel-filter fitment, and service procedures that differ across model years. If a warning message, leak, unusual running condition or damaged component appears, address it promptly rather than waiting for the next scheduled interval.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For operation in very cold climates, Ford’s manual recommends a block heater below -23 °C (-9 °F). Treat it as a climate-dependent consideration, and verify that any accessory is compatible with the exact truck. It does not replace the need to select oil for the expected temperature range or follow the scheduled maintenance plan.

What routine maintenance can—and cannot—promise

Following the correct schedule helps you avoid missed maintenance and use the specified fluids and filters, but it cannot guarantee a particular engine lifespan. Ford’s manuals and service guidance provide service instructions, not a population-level reliability study or a named expected mileage for 6.7L Power Stroke life. Claims that a properly maintained engine will reliably reach a specific mileage are not established by those materials.

The useful reliability goal is therefore process-based: use the right specification, service the truck at the interval suited to its use, replace both fuel filters, perform the scheduled inspections and deal with abnormal conditions early. Keep the manual for the exact truck as the authority when a general example and the vehicle-specific schedule differ.

Frequently Asked Questions

What oil does a Ford 6.7 Power Stroke need?

Use the oil specification and viscosity listed in the owner’s manual for the exact model year and operating conditions. Ford’s 2025 6.7L diesel manual recommends Motorcraft oil or oil of the recommended viscosity meeting WSS-M2C171-F1. Check the temperature and fuel-blend guidance in your own manual; viscosity alone does not confirm that an oil meets Ford’s specification.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How often should I change the oil in a 6.7 Power Stroke?

Under routine operation, follow the Intelligent Oil-Life Monitor and change the oil and filter when the cluster displays OIL CHANGE REQUIRED. Severe conditions can shorten the interval. Ford’s 2023 service tip gives a fallback of six months or 5,000 miles after the prior change if the monitor resets prematurely or becomes inoperative, with a maximum of one year or 10,000 miles between changes; verify applicable guidance in your truck’s manual.

How many fuel filters does the 6.7L Power Stroke have?

Ford identifies two: one mounted on top of the engine and another inside the diesel fuel conditioner module. Both are part of the maintenance requirement. Confirm the correct parts and service procedure for your truck’s year and configuration.

How often should the 6.7 Power Stroke fuel filters be replaced?

Ford’s 2025 Super Duty schedule lists 30,000 miles for diesel vehicles and 15,000 miles for diesel severe service. These are examples for that schedule, not universal intervals; use the schedule for your exact truck. Ford also notes that fuel with high impurity levels may call for more frequent replacement.

What counts as severe service for a 6.7 Power Stroke?

Ford’s examples include frequent or extended idling, low-speed or stationary operation, heavy traffic, dust or off-road use, towing, sustained high-speed operation at gross vehicle weight, short trips of less than 5–10 miles, heavy loads and temperature extremes. Check your model-year manual for the severe-service items and intervals.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does Ford specify how long a 6.7 Power Stroke should last?

The Ford manuals and service guidance discussed here do not provide a named expected mileage or a guaranteed service-life figure. Maintenance helps keep service aligned with the truck’s requirements, but it cannot promise a particular lifespan.

The Bottom Line

For a 6.7L Power Stroke, long-term reliability starts with the owner’s manual for the exact truck: use the specified oil, follow the Intelligent Oil-Life Monitor, service both fuel filters and complete the inspections that match your driving conditions. Treat Ford’s 2025 intervals as model-year examples, not universal rules, and consult the severe-service schedule when towing, idling, dust, short trips or temperature extremes are routine.
