You can lower your car insurance by comparing equivalent quotes, correcting policy details, checking discounts, and adjusting coverage or deductibles only when the trade-off makes sense for your finances. A cheaper premium is not automatically a better deal: it may come with less protection or more out-of-pocket cost after a crash. Savings vary by driver, insurer, and state, so no single tip guarantees a particular reduction.

1. Compare quotes on equal terms

Get quotes from several insurers using the same drivers, vehicles, annual mileage, vehicle use, coverage types, limits, and deductibles. Insurers weigh rating factors differently, so the same household can receive different prices. A low headline price is useful only if the policy protects you in a comparable way.

The National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) puts it plainly: “It is important to compare the same or similar coverage when you shop.” Use its consumer auto insurance guidance and shopping tool to prepare and compare. Ask for the coverage and price in writing where possible.

What to compare

  • Total premium for the same coverage types and limits.
  • Deductibles and the amount you would have to pay after a covered loss.
  • Included and excluded coverages, plus any optional endorsements.
  • Discounts applied and payment or service fees.
  • The insurer’s identity, authorization in your state, and available service or claims information.

For help understanding quote details, the NAIC explains auto insurance coverages and rating factors. State insurance departments may also publish comparison and complaint information. Treat example rates as illustrations rather than personal quotes; California’s regulator cautions that survey premiums may not include an individual’s full discounts or surcharges.

2. Ask about discounts—and verify them

Discount names and eligibility differ by insurer and state. Ask each company which discounts you qualify for, then check that they appear on the quote or policy. Possibilities include:

  • Multi-car or multi-policy bundling.
  • Good-student, driver-training, mature-driver, or good-driver discounts.
  • Safety-equipment or anti-theft discounts.
  • Low-mileage discounts.

Do not assume a discount is available everywhere or that its presence makes a policy cheaper overall. Compare the final premiums and policy terms. The California Department of Insurance’s auto insurance guidance offers California-specific shopping advice, including asking about discounts; eligibility and rules elsewhere may differ.

3. Check your policy details and report changes

Incorrect information can affect both your price and whether the policy reflects your situation. Review your address, vehicle make and model, vehicle classification and use, annual mileage, household drivers, and driver details. Confirm that eligible discounts are shown.

Tell the insurer when relevant circumstances change—for example, if you move, change how you use the car, add or remove a household driver, or drive substantially fewer miles. Ask the insurer to confirm updates and explain any effect on the policy or premium. Report details accurately rather than choosing an estimate that makes the quote look cheaper.

4. Raise a deductible only if you can afford the extra risk

A deductible is the amount you pay toward a covered loss before the insurer pays its part. A higher deductible may reduce the premium, but it increases what you must pay out of pocket when you make a covered claim. Ask for quotes at several collision and comprehensive deductible levels so you can compare the actual premium difference.

Before choosing a higher amount, check your accessible savings and consider whether you could cover the deductible after an unexpected loss. Weigh the premium reduction against the extra amount you would have to fund; do not choose a deductible based only on the monthly bill.

5. Reassess collision and comprehensive on an older car

Liability coverage generally pays for injury or property damage you cause to others, subject to the policy. Collision covers damage to your car from a collision; comprehensive covers certain non-collision events, such as theft, fire, or vandalism. State-required liability minimums vary. Collision and comprehensive are often optional under state law, but a lender or lessor may require them while you finance or lease a vehicle.

For a car you own outright, compare the cost of these coverages and their deductibles with the car’s market value and your ability to repair or replace it. There is no universal age or value cutoff for dropping them: the right choice depends on the vehicle and the loss you could absorb. Check your policy and state requirements, and confirm lender or lease terms before removing coverage.

6. Compare bundling rather than assuming it saves

An insurer may offer a multi-policy discount for combining auto insurance with another policy. Ask what the discount changes and compare the combined price and terms with buying the policies separately. A bundle is worthwhile only if the overall cost and coverage suit you.

7. Ask how mileage and vehicle use affect your price

Annual mileage and how you use a vehicle can affect a quote. Give each insurer an accurate estimate and ask whether it offers a low-mileage option that fits your driving. If your mileage or use changes, update the insurer rather than relying on outdated information.

8. Weigh usage-based insurance and its data terms

Usage-based insurance may assess mileage and driving behavior through a device, connected car, or phone app. Depending on the program, data may include miles driven, time of day, location, acceleration, braking, or cornering. The effect on your premium is specific to the insurer and driver; enrollment does not guarantee a lower price.

Before signing up, read the program terms and understand what data is collected, how it is used, and how participation affects your rate. The NAIC’s telematics guidance, updated September 1, 2026, describes telematics and auto insurance.

9. Check payment plans and fees

Ask whether paying in installments or using a different payment method changes fees or the total cost. Compare the full amount due over the policy term, not just the amount of each payment. Available plans and fees vary; the California Department of Insurance specifically advises consumers to ask about installment plans and service fees in its auto insurance guidance.

10. Get insurance quotes before buying a car

Vehicle type and model can affect insurance costs. Before purchasing, get quotes for the specific vehicles you are considering and compare the coverage on equal terms. Repair costs and theft likelihood are among the factors California’s regulator suggests considering in its vehicle-shopping guidance. Actual premiums depend on your circumstances and insurer.

11. Use state resources as a cross-check

Some state insurance departments provide consumer guidance, comparison information, or complaint resources. These can help you understand local rules and check an insurer, but sample premiums are not a substitute for your own quotes. California’s auto insurance resources and auto premium survey are specific to California. The survey uses hypothetical profiles, and its methodology was updated in February 2026; it warns that example prices may omit individual discounts and surcharges.

There is no broadly applicable official figure showing how much these tips save a typical driver. The NAIC reports that average auto premiums increased 10.31% and average liability premiums increased 10.36% over 2016–2020. Those historical figures are not a current rate trend and do not estimate savings from any of the steps above.
