Use the Model 3’s built-in Radio source. Open Media Player, choose Radio, select a listed station or enter its frequency on the numeric keypad, then use the next and previous controls to tune. This route is separate from Tesla’s internet-based streaming sources, so a streaming outage does not by itself prevent broadcast radio. The exact radio bands and screen labels can vary by market, vehicle configuration, model year, and software.

How do I listen to local radio in a Tesla Model 3?

The quickest path is on the center touchscreen:

  1. Open Media Player.
  2. Open the source selector and choose Radio.
  3. Pick a station from the list, or open the numeric keypad and enter the station’s frequency.
  4. Use the next and previous arrows to step through frequencies when you want to scan.
  5. Use the Favorites control to save a station you want to find quickly later.

The station list and controls are the vehicle’s broadcast-radio interface. You do not need to restore an internet connection merely to try a station shown in Radio. Reception still depends on the car having the relevant radio hardware for its market and on a usable local signal.

Tesla’s current North American Model 3 Owner’s Manual (the 2024-and-newer manual, identified there with software version 2026.32) describes both station selection and direct frequency entry. The older 2017–2023 manual also documents a Radio list, frequency entry, alphabetic station sorting, and Favorites. Your car may therefore show a different arrangement even when the underlying function is similar.

What to do when streaming is unavailable

Tesla states in its Model 3 manual: “Streaming services are available only when a data connection is available (for example, Wi-Fi or Premium Connectivity).” That statement concerns streaming sources that fetch audio over a network. The manual presents Radio as a separate Media Player source.

Use the following distinction to choose the right fix:

  • Internet or Premium Connectivity outage: open Radio and try a local broadcast station.
  • Radio is absent from the source menu: check whether the source was hidden in media settings.
  • Radio is present but no station is usable: the vehicle may be outside a station’s coverage area, or your particular market, configuration, or software may not provide the band you are trying to use.
  • The car cannot provide the broadcast capability you need: use a separate radio receiver for live local broadcasts, or switch to audio stored on a USB drive or paired device.

Do not treat a local broadcast as an alternate streaming service. A broadcast receiver and an internet data connection are different paths, and the manuals do not establish that every Model 3 has identical AM, FM, or HD capabilities.

Do you need Premium Connectivity for local radio?

No data connection is required for the broadcast path itself. Premium Connectivity or Wi-Fi matters to Tesla’s streaming services, not to a station selected from the vehicle’s Radio source. If streaming stops while Radio remains available, the outage is affecting the network source rather than necessarily affecting the tuner.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A subscription also cannot add a radio band or hardware that is absent from a particular vehicle. If Radio is not listed after you check the visibility settings, use the manual for that car’s region, model year, and configuration instead of assuming that a connectivity plan will restore it.

Why Radio may be missing from the Media Player

Tesla allows media sources to be hidden. A hidden source does not appear in the Media Player drop-down or the app launcher, which can make a working feature look unavailable.

Restore a hidden source

  1. Open the vehicle’s media settings from the Media Player.
  2. Find Sources.
  3. Review the source visibility choices and enable Radio if it is hidden.
  4. Return to Media Player and open the source selector again.

The exact placement of the settings can change with software, so follow the labels shown on your screen rather than relying on an older screenshot. If Radio is not listed in the Sources controls at all, that is different from a merely hidden source. Check the manual for your vehicle’s region, model year, and installed equipment before assuming a software fault.

It is useful to distinguish three states:

  • Hidden source: Radio exists but is excluded from the dropdown or launcher; changing Sources visibility can restore it.
  • Visible source with no stations: the tuner is exposed, but reception, frequency, or regional capability may be the problem.
  • No Radio option anywhere: the vehicle may not have the applicable broadcast capability, or its software and configuration may differ from the manual you are viewing.

How to tune and save a station

Choose a station from the list

With Radio selected, browse the stations that the vehicle makes available. The older manual describes stations as alphabetically sorted and allows the selection to be customized with Favorites. A list entry is useful when you know the station’s call sign or name but not its frequency.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Enter a frequency directly

Tap the numeric keypad and enter the desired frequency. This is the practical method when you know the number printed in a station guide or displayed by the broadcaster. After entering it, use the next and previous controls to move through adjacent frequencies. Whether a particular band or frequency is accepted depends on the radio equipment and regional configuration in your vehicle.

Entering a frequency is not the same as forcing reception. The keypad can request a frequency, but it cannot create a signal outside the station’s coverage area or enable a band that the car does not support. If the frequency produces silence, try another known local station and use the stepping controls to determine whether nearby signals are detectable.

Add a station to Favorites

When a station is playing, use the Favorites control to save it. Favorites are intended for quick access to stations you use regularly. Tesla’s current manual notes that FM selections may not appear in Recents, so Favorites are the more dependable way to keep an FM station available in your personal list.

When the station list is empty or reception fails

An empty list, a frequency that produces no audio, and a missing Radio source are different symptoms. Identify which one you have before changing settings.

Radio source is visible, but there is no usable station

  • Try another listed station or a different frequency. One silent frequency does not prove that the receiver is unavailable.
  • Use the next and previous controls to check whether nearby frequencies are detectable.
  • Move to an area where you know the station broadcasts. The manual does not provide a reception percentage or guarantee coverage.
  • Confirm that you are using the manual and feature set for your vehicle’s market and software version. Tesla documents feature variation by market, configuration, and software.

If several known local stations remain unavailable, the in-car instructions cannot create a signal that the vehicle does not receive. A separate receiver is the appropriate fallback when live broadcast audio is essential.

Radio is not in the source selector

First check Media Player’s Sources settings for a hidden source. If it is not available there, do not assume that a subscription will add it; streaming access and broadcast-radio equipment are separate matters. Consult the applicable Model 3 manual or Tesla service support for the car’s region and configuration.

The interface differs from an online tutorial

Tutorials often show a particular software release. The current U.S. manual covers 2024-and-newer vehicles and software version 2026.32, while the 2017–2023 manual uses an older interface description. Use the controls that are actually displayed on your screen, and treat differences in labels or layout as a version issue until the vehicle-specific manual says otherwise.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How can you tell whether the problem is the internet?

If streaming apps fail but the Radio source opens and lists stations, the network outage is not preventing the broadcast path. If Radio is missing entirely, investigate source visibility and vehicle-specific capability instead. If Radio opens but every known local station is silent, test another location or another station before concluding that connectivity is responsible.

Can you listen to FM radio without internet?

You can try the built-in Radio source without relying on Tesla’s streaming data path, provided your Model 3 has the required broadcast capability and a station is receivable where you are. Tesla’s manuals separate Radio from streaming services; they do not promise identical AM/FM/HD equipment in every Model 3 sold worldwide.

That qualification matters if you are comparing cars from different years or regions. A frequency that works in one Model 3 is not proof that the same band is fitted or enabled in another. Look at the Radio source on the actual vehicle and use the manual for that vehicle’s market rather than assuming a universal specification.

Offline alternatives when local radio is not available

USB audio from a flash drive

A USB drive can play audio files stored in advance. Tesla’s current manual says the player supports exFAT flash drives and does not currently support NTFS. Use a front USB port for this function. Some vehicles manufactured after approximately November 1, 2021 may have center-console USB ports that provide charging only; Tesla directs owners of those vehicles to the glove-box USB port for other functions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check your car’s port arrangement before preparing a drive. USB playback is an offline library, not a way to receive a live station: it continues working with stored files but cannot tune over-the-air broadcasts. Choose this option when you need predictable music, podcasts, or other recordings during a connectivity outage and can prepare the files beforehand.

  • 【What You Get】64 GB USB Flash Drive Thumb Drive, The default format of the usb storage flash drive is exFAT.

The practical preparation requirements are modest but important: format the drive as exFAT, copy the audio files before leaving, and test the drive in the port that supports data. If a center-console port only charges, moving the same drive to the glove-box port is the documented alternative for applicable vehicles. A flash drive does not need Wi-Fi, cellular service, or Premium Connectivity once the files are stored locally.

Bluetooth audio from a paired device

Tesla documents pairing a Bluetooth-capable phone or other device, then selecting that connected device from Media Player’s Phone source. Locally stored audio on the device can play without vehicle streaming. This option still relies on the device being charged, paired, and within Bluetooth range, and it does not turn the Model 3 into a broadcast-radio receiver.

Bluetooth is useful when your audio library already lives on a phone. It is less useful if your specific requirement is a live local station, because the phone would need its own radio or locally available broadcast application and the vehicle would still be playing the phone’s audio rather than tuning a built-in receiver. Pairing also introduces an extra setup step that USB playback does not require after the files are prepared.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A separate portable AM/FM radio

A portable AM/FM receiver is an independent fallback when the Model 3 cannot receive the station you need. It has its own tuner, power source, and speaker. Tesla does not recommend a particular model in the cited manuals and does not describe integrating such a receiver with the Model 3 sound system, so treat it as a separate device rather than a Tesla accessory or guaranteed in-car solution.

This is the only listed fallback that directly supplies a live over-the-air tuner when the car’s Radio source is unavailable. It also has limitations: reception depends on the portable unit’s location and antenna, and the sound normally comes from that device’s own speaker. No documented Tesla procedure routes its output through the Model 3’s Media Player or speakers.

Which option fits your situation?

Option Live broadcast? Vehicle internet required? How it integrates Main limitation
Built-in Radio Yes, when a receivable station and the relevant vehicle capability are present No streaming connection is required for the broadcast path Media Player’s Radio source, station list, keypad, tuning controls, and Favorites Band availability varies by market, configuration, software, and model year; reception is location-dependent
USB files No; stored audio only No Media Player plays files from a compatible USB drive Use exFAT rather than NTFS; some later center-console ports are charge-only
Bluetooth-stored audio No; stored audio from the paired device No, if the files are stored locally Pair the device and select it from the Phone source Requires a charged, paired device and does not provide a broadcast tuner
Portable AM/FM receiver Yes, through its own tuner No Separate from the Model 3’s Media Player and speakers Requires its own power, speaker, and reception; no Tesla integration is documented

The table separates two questions that are often conflated: whether audio is live and whether the car is using the internet. Only a receiver—built into the vehicle or supplied as a separate radio—can tune a live over-the-air station. USB and Bluetooth solve offline listening, not broadcast reception.

For a connectivity outage, start with the built-in Radio because it requires no file preparation and uses the vehicle’s controls. Choose USB when you want a dependable offline library and can prepare files in advance. Choose Bluetooth when the files already reside on a paired device. Choose a portable radio when hearing a live broadcast matters more than integration with the Tesla screen and speakers.

Model-year and regional differences to check

Use the manual that matches the vehicle rather than assuming that a current screen applies to every Model 3. The current North American reference is the 2024-and-newer Owner’s Manual associated with software version 2026.32. Tesla also publishes a 2017–2023 manual with its own Radio-selection guidance.

Differences can arise from:

  • Market: radio bands and regulatory configurations are not necessarily the same worldwide.
  • Vehicle configuration: not every car has identical audio hardware or enabled sources.
  • Software: menu names, source visibility controls, and layout can change.
  • Model year: an older vehicle may follow the earlier manual’s organization even after receiving software updates.

For that reason, “FM radio works in a Model 3” is too broad a promise. The defensible test is whether your car presents Radio, accepts the frequency you need, and receives a usable signal in your current location.

A practical outage checklist

  1. Open Media Player and look for Radio.
  2. If Radio is missing, inspect Media Player settings and restore it under Sources if it was hidden.
  3. If Radio is available, select a listed station or enter its known frequency with the keypad.
  4. Try the next and previous controls and at least one other local station.
  5. If no station is usable, determine whether the issue is location, regional equipment, or a vehicle-specific configuration rather than an internet outage.
  6. For live broadcast audio that the car cannot receive, use a separate portable receiver.
  7. For non-live offline audio, prepare an exFAT USB drive and verify which USB port supports data, or pair a device containing locally stored files.

This sequence prevents a common mistake: attempting to fix a broadcast-reception problem by repeatedly reconnecting streaming services. Streaming availability and Radio-source availability are separate checks.

What the Tesla manuals establish—and what they do not

The manuals establish the operational path: Radio can be selected in Media Player, a station can be chosen from the list or entered by frequency, and Favorites can preserve a currently playing station. They also establish that streaming services require a data connection and that hidden sources can be shown again from media settings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

They do not establish a universal list of AM, FM, or HD bands for every Model 3, a guaranteed reception range, a percentage of vehicles with a particular tuner, or a way to route a separate portable radio through the car’s speakers. Avoid relying on unsupported reception claims when deciding whether the built-in source meets your needs.

Frequently asked questions

Can I listen to a local station during a Tesla connectivity outage?

Yes, if your car has the applicable Radio capability and the station is receivable where you are. Open Media Player and select Radio; this is distinct from internet streaming.

How do I tune a radio station in a Model 3?

Select Radio, choose a listed station, or tap the numeric keypad and enter the frequency. Use the next and previous controls to step through frequencies.

Why is Radio missing from my Tesla media sources?

Check Media Player settings and the Sources visibility controls. A hidden source does not appear in the dropdown or app launcher. If Radio is not available in Sources, consult the manual for your vehicle’s market, model year, and configuration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does Premium Connectivity add FM or AM radio?

No. Premium Connectivity supplies a data connection for streaming services. It does not establish that a vehicle has a particular broadcast band or add missing radio hardware.

Why did my FM station not appear in Recents?

Tesla’s current manual notes that FM selections may not appear in Recents. Save a currently playing station with Favorites when you want reliable quick access.

Do all Model 3 cars have the same AM, FM, or HD bands?

No universal band list is established for every market, configuration, model year, and software version. Check the Radio source and the manual applicable to the actual vehicle.

Can a USB drive replace live local radio?

No. USB playback is for files stored ahead of time. Tesla documents exFAT support and not NTFS, and some vehicles have center-console ports that only charge. A USB drive does not receive a live broadcast.

Can I play a portable radio through the Tesla speakers?

Tesla’s manuals do not describe that integration. Treat a portable AM/FM radio as a separate device with its own tuner, power, and speaker.

What should I use if live radio is essential and the Tesla cannot receive it?

Use a separate portable AM/FM receiver. If live audio is not required, use locally stored files on a compatible exFAT USB drive or a paired Bluetooth device instead.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Open Media Player and select Radio to try a local broadcast without Tesla streaming. Enter the frequency or choose a station, use next and previous to tune, and save important stations to Favorites. If Radio is missing, restore it under Sources. Because equipment varies by market, configuration, model year, and software, a silent or absent source may require a separate portable AM/FM receiver. For offline stored audio, use an exFAT USB drive in a data-capable port or a paired Bluetooth device; neither option receives live radio.
