- Secure the Mustang while it is stopped. Keep the parking brake applied until you are ready to begin the launch.
- Depress the clutch pedal fully and select first gear.
- Release the parking brake as you begin the start. The exact hand-brake or electronic-brake controls depend on the vehicle’s equipment.
- Begin releasing the clutch gradually while applying the accelerator gradually. Use the car’s response to continue the smooth transition rather than chasing a memorized engine-speed number.
- Once the clutch is fully engaged and the car is moving, remove your foot from the clutch pedal and continue accelerating normally.

How to reduce clutch wear during ordinary driving
Do not rest your foot on the pedal
Ford warns that driving with a foot resting on the clutch pedal reduces clutch life and could affect a clutch warranty claim. Even light, unintended pressure can keep the clutch from being completely clamped. After each start or shift, move your left foot to the vehicle’s footrest or another safe resting position, not onto the clutch pedal.
Do not use the clutch as a parking brake
When traffic stops on an incline, hold the Mustang stationary with the brake. Ford specifically warns against using the clutch to hold the vehicle while waiting on a hill. Balancing the car with partial clutch engagement is not a substitute for the brake and can reduce clutch life.
Fully depress the clutch for shifts
Ford also warns that failing to press the clutch pedal fully during a shift can increase shift effort, prematurely wear transmission components, or damage the transmission. Press the pedal all the way down before moving the shifter, complete the gear change, and release the pedal smoothly. Finish the engagement instead of hovering
The friction point is useful only during the transition from stopped to moving. Once the car is rolling and the clutch is engaged, release the pedal completely. Keeping the pedal partially engaged after the launch extends the slipping phase without a stated benefit for normal street driving.
Hill starts: brake control versus clutch holding
A hill makes a normal start more demanding because gravity tries to move the car before the clutch is fully engaged. The wear-safe principle remains the same: use the brake to keep the car stationary, then perform the first-gear launch. Ford’s routine sequence includes the parking brake, but the exact hill-start controls and any hill-hold feature vary by model year and equipment.
A conservative hill-start sequence
- Stop with the Mustang secured by the brake or parking brake rather than by clutch slip.
- Fully depress the clutch and select first gear.

If the car rolls or stalls
Rolling backward or stalling means the launch was not completed smoothly; it is not a reason to keep the clutch slipping for longer at every stop. Reapply the brake, secure the car, depress the clutch fully, select first gear, and repeat the controlled sequence. Avoid panic inputs: a fully depressed clutch separates the engine from the drivetrain so you can secure the vehicle before trying again.

Reading the car during the launch
