To minimize battery drain, power accessories only when necessary, turn off Keep Accessory Power On when the car is unattended, disable parked features you do not need, and leave the Tesla plugged in whenever practical. Use Camp Mode only when you need the cabin climate and electronics to remain active, because it continues using energy. Exact controls, outlet limits, and feature availability depend on the Tesla model, model year, software, and configuration.
Why a parked Tesla can lose charge
A Tesla does not become completely electrically inactive when parked. Battery management, communications, security monitoring, climate functions, cabin protection, and user-enabled accessories can all consume energy. Tesla says it is expected for a vehicle to use around 1% of charge per day while parked; that is an approximate support figure, not a guaranteed rate and not a measurement of one particular accessory.

Tesla identifies several possible contributors to parked consumption:

- Cabin climate controls, including heating or cooling left on while unplugged.
- Sentry Mode and related security monitoring.
- Cabin Overheat Protection.
- Preconditioning while the vehicle is unplugged.
- Summon standby.
- Infotainment activity and streaming.
- Power supplied through outlets or other vehicle power features, including Powershare where supported.
- Aftermarket equipment connected to the low-voltage system.
- Third-party apps that repeatedly collect vehicle data.
Cold or hot weather, weak cellular coverage, software activity, frequent wake-ups, and the device’s own consumption can make parked use higher than the approximate daily figure. Tesla’s guidance does not establish a universal wattage or runtime for accessories.

First decide whether the accessory must stay powered
The most effective way to prevent unnecessary drain is to avoid supplying power after you leave. Before changing a setting, ask whether the device actually needs continuous power.
If the device can shut down when you leave
- Turn off the accessory before exiting.
- Unplug it if the connector, cable, or adapter could keep the vehicle awake.
- Turn off Keep Accessory Power On after the session.
- Disable climate, Sentry Mode, streaming, and other parked features that are not needed.
This is the lowest-energy arrangement because the car is not being asked to maintain an energized outlet for an unattended load.
If the device must run while nobody is in the car
Use the Tesla setting intended to keep supported accessory power available, then watch the vehicle’s state of charge. Tesla’s Model Y manual explicitly warns that enabling this setting increases vehicle power use even when no device is being powered or charged. The setting can therefore consume energy simply by remaining enabled.

How to keep accessory power on, then turn it off
Controls vary by model year and software version. The cited 2020–2024 Model Y manual places the control at Controls > Charging > Keep Accessory Power On. Your vehicle may use a different menu location or may not expose the feature in the same way.
- Park safely and bring the vehicle to the required parked state.
- On the touchscreen, open Controls.
- Open Charging.
- Enable Keep Accessory Power On only if the accessory must remain powered after you leave.
- Connect a compatible device and check that it is operating normally.
- Before ending the session, return to the same control and disable the setting.
- Switch off or disconnect the accessory, then verify that climate and other parked features are not still active.
If the option is missing, unavailable, or cannot be enabled, check whether a low-power setting is active and consult the manual for the exact vehicle configuration. Do not assume that a control shown in a Model Y manual exists on every Tesla.
When Camp Mode is the right choice
Camp Mode is designed for situations in which occupants remain in the vehicle and need the cabin climate and electronics to stay on. Tesla says it can maintain the cabin temperature, keep the touchscreen on, and provide power for electronics through USB ports and the low-voltage outlet.

Camp Mode is not a battery-saving mode. It trades stored energy for comfort and access to powered systems. Heating or cooling can be a substantial part of the vehicle’s parked consumption, and the rate changes with outside temperature, target temperature, insulation, occupants, and the connected device. Tesla cautions against using parked climate modes when the battery charge is low.

- You are staying in the car and need heating or cooling.
- You need the touchscreen and vehicle electronics to remain available.
- You are powering small devices from supported USB ports or the low-voltage outlet.
Do not use Camp Mode when
- You only need a device to charge briefly and no one needs cabin climate.
- The vehicle will be unattended for an extended period.
- The battery is already low and there is no practical way to recharge.
For a short charging session, a normal powered outlet or USB connection may avoid running the cabin climate, provided the relevant feature and accessory are supported by your model.
Plug in whenever practical
Tesla recommends keeping the vehicle plugged in when using parked, energy-consuming features where possible. External power can supply some of the energy needed for preconditioning, climate operation, and accessory use instead of drawing all of it from the high-voltage battery.
Tesla’s summer-driving guidance says preconditioning the cabin while plugged in saves battery energy. By contrast, running climate while unplugged gradually consumes energy from the vehicle’s battery pack. Being plugged in does not make every accessory or feature free: the car can still use energy, charging may stop or be limited by settings, and a long session can require substantial electricity from the wall supply.
Before leaving a plugged-in Tesla running accessories
- Use a properly rated charging connection and confirm that charging is actually active.
- Set a sufficient charge limit for the planned session.
- Confirm that the accessory is compatible with the vehicle’s outlet or USB port.
- Check that climate, Sentry Mode, or other features are enabled only when needed.
- Keep the vehicle and charging equipment within the safety conditions specified by Tesla.
What the outlet and USB guidance means
Electrical limits are model-specific. The cited 2020–2024 Model Y Owner’s Manual rates its low-voltage outlet for up to 12 amps continuous and 16 amps peak. Tesla warns that the outlet and connector can become hot and recommends against non-Tesla accessories, including inverters. Those figures and cautions must not be generalized to every Tesla model, year, or market.

An outlet’s current rating is not a promise of a particular driving-range loss or operating time. The actual effect depends on the accessory, charging efficiency, temperature, vehicle state, and other active systems.

Does leaving something plugged in drain a Tesla?
Not necessarily in the way many owners assume. The cited Model Y manual states that leaving an accessory plugged in does not deplete the low-voltage battery under the conditions described by the manual. That sentence concerns the low-voltage battery; it does not mean that powering the accessory has no effect on the vehicle’s high-voltage battery or parked range.
If the vehicle is supplying power, keeping accessory power enabled, keeping the car awake, or running climate and security functions, energy can still come from the high-voltage pack. A device that is merely connected but not drawing power is a different situation from a device actively charging, recording, heating, cooling, or communicating.
Low Power Mode can change what is available
Tesla’s Model 3 owner’s manual says Low Power Mode disables selected functions, including Keep Accessory Power On. If a feature cannot be enabled, check whether the vehicle is in a low-power state before assuming the outlet or accessory has failed.

If you need a device powered, you may have to exit that state or use a different supported arrangement, subject to the instructions for your model and software.

How to find an unexpected parked drain
When the charge falls faster than expected, identify which systems are keeping the vehicle active instead of assuming the accessory alone is responsible.
- Record the battery percentage, time, outside conditions, and whether the car is plugged in.
- Turn off Keep Accessory Power On unless continuous power is essential.
- Disable Sentry Mode, Keep Climate On, Cabin Overheat Protection, Summon standby, streaming, and other features you do not need for the parking period.
- Disconnect aftermarket equipment and stop third-party apps from polling the vehicle repeatedly.
- Park with a reliable cellular connection where practical; repeated wake-ups can increase consumption.
- Observe the vehicle over a comparable period with the accessory removed or inactive.
- If the loss remains unusually high, review the current owner’s manual and contact Tesla service rather than guessing at a wattage or runtime.
Tesla warns that aftermarket equipment connected to the low-voltage system and third-party apps that collect vehicle data can decrease parked range and reduce battery lifespan. Tesla does not recommend aftermarket equipment. Remove it during troubleshooting unless the exact manual permits the installation and you understand its electrical requirements.

Common mistakes and their fixes
Leaving Keep Accessory Power On enabled permanently
Problem: The vehicle uses additional energy even when no device is connected or charging.
Fix: Treat the setting as temporary. Enable it for the session, then disable it before leaving the vehicle for normal parking.
Using Camp Mode just to charge a phone
Problem: Climate and other systems may remain active when only a small accessory load is needed.
Fix: Use a supported USB port or outlet without Camp Mode when cabin temperature control is unnecessary.
Assuming a plugged-in car cannot lose charge
Problem: Charging may be paused, limited, interrupted, or insufficient for the total load.
Fix: Confirm charging status, charge limit, connection, and the accessory’s compatibility. Continue monitoring the state of charge.

Applying Model Y outlet limits to another Tesla
Problem: Outlet hardware, ratings, menus, and feature availability differ by model and year.
Fix: Use the owner’s manual for the exact vehicle, not a rating copied from another Tesla.
Assuming a connected plug is the same as an active load
Problem: A cable can be connected while the device is idle, asleep, or drawing power intermittently.
Fix: Check the device’s own charging or operating state and disconnect it when no longer needed.
Safety checks before powering a device
- Verify the outlet, USB port, cable, adapter, and accessory are rated for the intended use.
- Inspect for heat, discoloration, looseness, damaged insulation, or a burning smell; stop using the connection if any appears.
- Keep cables clear of pedals, steering controls, seat rails, door seals, and airbag deployment areas.
- Do not use an unapproved inverter or high-load appliance simply because it physically fits the outlet.
- Do not leave a high-load or heat-producing device unattended unless the vehicle manual and accessory instructions expressly support that use.
- Maintain enough battery charge for driving and for unexpected delays; do not rely on an approximate parked-use figure as a guaranteed reserve.
Model-specific checks matter
The guidance above combines Tesla support information with the cited Model 3 and 2020–2024 Model Y manuals. It does not establish identical behavior for every Tesla, software release, market, or accessory. Before connecting anything, look up the exact manual section for interior electronics, low-voltage power, USB ports, climate operation, and low-power settings.
For a suspected electrical fault, repeated unusually rapid parked loss, hot connectors, warning messages, or a low-voltage battery problem, stop using the accessory and contact Tesla service. A service diagnosis is more appropriate than estimating drain from the device’s advertised wattage.
