Keep a Hellcat cool by managing two separate systems: the conventional engine-coolant circuit that protects the 6.2-liter Hemi, and the low-temperature charge-air circuit that removes heat from the supercharger intercooler. Check the owner’s manual for your exact model year, body style and trim before servicing either circuit or changing track equipment. Use the factory cooling and cooldown features, keep the front cooling stack clear, use the specified coolant, and treat any warning or overheating symptom as a reason to stop rather than a temperature challenge to push through.
Understand the two cooling circuits before changing anything
A supercharged Hellcat can lose performance from charge-air heat soak without the engine coolant overheating, or it can develop an engine-cooling fault while the supercharger system appears normal. The remedies are different, so identify which temperature or warning you are addressing.

Engine-coolant circuit
The high-temperature circuit removes combustion heat from the engine, cylinder heads and related components. Its radiator, thermostat, water pump, pressure cap and hoses operate under pressure. A rising engine-temperature gauge, an overheating message, coolant loss or steam concerns this circuit. Never remove a pressure cap while the system is hot; hot coolant can escape violently and cause severe burns.
Low-temperature charge-air circuit
The supercharger compresses intake air, and compression raises its temperature. Hellcat models use a separate low-temperature coolant circuit for the intercooler heat exchangers. That circuit sends coolant through a low-temperature radiator and then through the supercharger charge-air cooler. It is intended to keep intake-air temperatures under control during repeated acceleration, not to replace the engine radiator.

SRT Power Chiller and Race Cooldown
On vehicles equipped with the SRT Power Chiller, air-conditioning refrigerant is diverted through a chiller unit to remove additional heat from the low-temperature circuit. Dodge’s 2023 Challenger performance information identifies chiller availability by trim, so do not assume every Challenger or Charger has it.
Race Cooldown, when fitted, keeps the engine cooling fan and low-temperature coolant pump running after shutdown to lower supercharger and charge-air-cooler temperature. Stellantis says Race Cooldown became standard on the Charger SRT Hellcat in 2019; that statement does not establish availability on every Hellcat model or earlier year. On equipped cars, SRT Performance Pages can display supercharger coolant temperature. That reading is useful for observing heat soak, but the manufacturer sources do not provide one universal number that guarantees a car is ready for another run.
Prepare the car before a hard-drive or track session
Confirm the exact factory instructions
Start with the owner’s manual matching the vehicle identification number, model year, body style and trim. Cooling hardware, chiller equipment, grille panels, fluid capacities and track procedures vary. A procedure printed for a 2016 Challenger should not automatically be applied to a 2021 Charger, and a Redeye configuration may not match a standard Hellcat.
- Verify whether the car has a low-temperature circuit, SRT Power Chiller and Race Cooldown.
- Read the manual’s track-use section for required settings, removable panels and cooldown instructions.
- Use only service parts and fluids that the manual specifies for that configuration.
Inspect the front cooling stack
Airflow is the first line of defense. With the engine cold, inspect the openings and the surfaces behind them for leaves, plastic, insects, mud and bent fins. The stack can include the air-conditioning condenser, engine radiator and one or more low-temperature heat exchangers. Debris between layers may be invisible from the front, so have a qualified technician inspect and clean the assembly if airflow appears restricted. Do not straighten delicate fins aggressively or pressure-wash them at a close distance; damage can reduce airflow.

Check for wet spots, dried coolant residue, damaged hoses and loose electrical connectors. A low-temperature pump that is not operating, or a leak that lets air enter the circuit, can cause charge-air temperatures to rise even when the engine gauge looks normal. Any leak or recurring fluid loss calls for professional diagnosis.
Check fluid level and condition safely
Inspect reservoirs only when the vehicle is cold and parked level. The 2017 Challenger SRT Owner’s Manual specifies organic additive technology (OAT) coolant conforming to MS.90032 and warns against mixing OAT with HOAT or generic “globally compatible” coolant. That specification is model-year-specific; use the exact requirement in your manual rather than treating MS.90032 as universal.
If the level is low, do not simply fill and continue driving hard. The manual says to contact an authorized dealer when coolant must be added, because a leak or air trapped in the supercharger circuit may require the correct bleeding or vacuum-fill procedure. The same 2017 manual states that the 6.2-liter supercharged engine’s intercooler circuit must be vacuum flushed and filled. That is specialist service, not a routine open-cap drain-and-fill.

Before the first session, open SRT Performance Pages and identify the available engine and supercharger coolant readings. Record the normal values during an easy drive so a later change is obvious. Watch for warning messages, reduced-power behavior, unusual fan operation or a sudden change in charge-air response. Do not invent a temperature limit from a different vehicle; use the warning strategy and instructions in the matching manual.

Use factory cooldown behavior between runs
Heat soak is cumulative. A short, hard run followed immediately by another run can leave the supercharger and intercooler heat exchangers hotter than they were at the end of the first pass.
- Finish the run normally. Lift smoothly and avoid an abrupt shutdown while the car is still at maximum load.
- Drive a gentle cooldown period. Use light throttle and allow airflow through the front of the car. On a circuit, follow the manual’s prescribed cooldown lap.
- Park without blocking airflow. Do not cover the grille or place heat-trapping material over the front of the car.
- Leave Race Cooldown enabled if equipped. After switching off, allow the engine fan and low-temperature pump to run. Do not disconnect, bypass or interrupt them to force a quicker turnaround.
- Check the displayed temperatures. Use SRT Performance Pages where available and wait for the trend to move down. There is no factory-published universal “ready” number for every Hellcat.
- Investigate abnormal behavior. If temperatures climb run after run, the pump is silent, a warning appears or power drops sharply, stop the session and arrange diagnosis.
Follow the track procedure for the specific car
A 2016 Challenger SRT/Hellcat manual copy hosted by Dealer eProcess recommends ending each track outing with at least one cooldown lap using minimal braking. The same copy recommends removing a removable lower front fascia grille in warm or hot track weather when that grille is equipped. This guidance comes from that particular manual copy and must be checked against the official manual for your vehicle before removing any panel. Never remove a structural, fixed or aerodynamic component merely to imitate a different trim.
A cooldown lap is not a victory lap at reduced speed with repeated heavy braking. Use modest engine load, smooth inputs and minimal braking so the engine, brakes and cooling stack can shed heat. If the circuit or event rules require a different procedure, follow the event’s safety instructions and the vehicle manual together.

Service coolant with the correct method
Why coolant chemistry matters
Coolant is not interchangeable by color or marketing label. The 2017 Challenger SRT manual’s OAT/MS.90032 requirement and its warning against mixing OAT with HOAT apply to that documented model year. Incorrect chemistry can reduce corrosion protection or create deposits in small passages and pumps. Use a sealed, vehicle-correct product and keep records of the brand, specification and date.

Why the intercooler circuit needs special filling
The supercharger circuit contains heat exchangers, pumps and passages where air can remain trapped. The cited 2017 manual calls for vacuum flushing and filling of the intercooler circuit, allowing the system to be filled without leaving an air pocket. An air pocket can reduce coolant flow and make charge-air temperatures unstable. Have a qualified technician perform this service with the vehicle-specific equipment and bleeding procedure.
Do not use capacity figures as a universal fill target
A 2015 Dodge Challenger SRT User’s Guide lists “15 Quarts” for the 6.2-liter supercharged engine cooling system and “4.5 Quarts” for the intercooler circuit. Those figures belong to the configuration described in that guide. They are not a safe assumption for every Hellcat year, body style or trim. The service manual for the exact vehicle takes precedence.
Tell heat soak apart from engine overheating

Respond correctly to an overheating warning
- Reduce load immediately. Lift off the throttle and move to a safe location without creating a traffic hazard.
- Follow the owner’s manual warning procedure. The correct action can depend on the warning message and vehicle configuration.
- Shut down only as instructed. Do not keep driving to reach a preferred temperature or pit position.
- Keep clear of hot components. Do not remove a radiator, engine or intercooler pressure cap while hot.
- Arrange inspection. A qualified technician should check leaks, fans, pumps, thermostats, sensors and both coolant circuits before the next hard session.
A universal temperature threshold is not a substitute for the warning strategy in the vehicle’s manual. The reviewed Dodge guidance does not establish one number at which every Hellcat must stop or may safely resume.
Decide whether a replacement part is actually needed
Factory-grounded maintenance should come before modifications. A blocked heat exchanger, incorrect coolant, low fluid level, failed pump or trapped air can overwhelm an otherwise stock system. Replacing components without diagnosing that fault can add complexity while leaving the cause untouched.

The official Mopar catalog lists cooling components for a 2022 Charger SRT Hellcat Redeye Widebody, including a chiller heat exchanger, auxiliary coolant pump and low-temperature cooler. Catalog presence confirms that those parts exist for that application; it does not prove that they are upgrades for another Hellcat or that they will produce a measured temperature reduction. Confirm exact part-number fitment, circuit location and calibration requirements before purchase.
No independently documented comparative test establishes a universal aftermarket temperature improvement for Hellcat models in the information available here. Treat claims of guaranteed reductions or universal fitment cautiously, and require vehicle-specific evidence before changing the factory system.
