Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteTell the insurer about every factory option and modification before you buy or change the policy, then get written confirmation of what is covered, under which limit, and how a total loss would be valued. A standard policy may provide little or no protection for some aftermarket equipment unless you add an additional-equipment endorsement. For an unusually valuable, exotic, collectible, or heavily modified car, compare specialty coverage as well.
Start by separating liability coverage from coverage for your car
Liability insurance pays for injury or property damage you cause to other people. It does not establish what your own luxury car, factory options, wheels, suspension, audio system, or other modifications are worth after a crash. The questions in this guide concern physical-damage coverage for your vehicle: collision, comprehensive, and endorsements that address equipment.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
Collision generally responds to crash damage, while comprehensive generally addresses covered non-collision events such as theft, fire, vandalism, or weather. The exact covered causes, deductibles, exclusions, and limits come from your policy. Do not assume that calling a car “fully insured” means every component will be replaced at its purchase price.

Make a complete equipment inventory before requesting a quote
Insurers cannot evaluate equipment they do not know about. Prepare one schedule that distinguishes what the manufacturer installed from what was added later.

List factory options separately
Record the vehicle identification number, model year, trim, factory packages, and each high-value option. Include items such as upgraded wheels, carbon-fiber body pieces, premium seats, advanced driver-assistance hardware, special paint, an upgraded sound system, and factory navigation if fitted. A build sheet, window sticker, dealer invoice, or purchase contract can help establish what was originally installed. Ask whether the option is reflected in the vehicle’s insured value or handled under a separate equipment limit; do not infer the answer from the trim name.
List every aftermarket modification
Describe modifications by part and location, not with a broad label such as “customized.” Include wheels and tires, suspension components, engine or exhaust work, body kits, spoilers, wraps or special paint, lighting, interior upholstery, audio and video equipment, permanently mounted electronics, security systems, and professionally installed accessories. Give the date installed, the installer, the invoice amount, and the current replacement cost if you have it.
California Department of Insurance consumer guidance specifically identifies custom wheels, navigation systems, and permanently installed custom equipment as extra equipment for which insurance may be purchased by endorsement. That is a reminder to disclose the equipment, not a promise that a particular item is covered automatically.
Build evidence that will still exist after a loss
- Keep itemized invoices, receipts, contracts, and payment records.
- Photograph the car from all sides and take close-ups of each modification, serial number, and identifying mark.
- Save build sheets, alignment reports, installation certificates, and parts lists where applicable.
- Store copies away from the car, such as in secure cloud storage or with your household records.
- Update the schedule whenever you add, remove, or replace equipment.
These records do not guarantee reimbursement of the original invoice price. They give the insurer information to apply the policy’s valuation and equipment provisions.

Ask for an additional-equipment endorsement
The California Department of Insurance glossary defines an “Additional Equipment Endorsement” as coverage for “certain parts and equipment that are not installed by the manufacturer.” The endorsement has a maximum limit shown on the endorsement itself. A regular physical-damage limit therefore may not be enough, or may provide limited or no coverage, for aftermarket equipment.
Request the actual endorsement wording, not only a verbal statement that modifications are covered. Check these points line by line:
- Covered equipment: Does the definition include each listed part, and does it distinguish permanently installed equipment from removable items?
- Maximum amount: What is the separate limit, and is it per loss, per item, or otherwise restricted?
- Valuation: Will the insurer pay repair cost, replacement cost, depreciated value, or another amount allowed by the policy?
- Deductible: Does the vehicle deductible apply, or is there a separate equipment deductible?
- Exclusions: Are racing, track use, certain performance modifications, cosmetic changes, wear, mechanical failure, or improper installation excluded?
- Proof: What invoices, photographs, appraisals, build sheets, or installation records must be supplied before a claim?
- Change reporting: How quickly must additions or removals be reported?
Ask the insurer to identify the limit that applies to every item on your schedule. If the answer is “the car is covered,” ask for the page and section that says how the item is valued and which limit controls.
Understand how the car itself may be valued
California consumer guidance says collision and comprehensive compensation is based on market value. California claims guidance describes the general settlement as the lesser of the repair cost or the vehicle’s actual cash value, and explains actual cash value in California as fair market value unless the policy defines it differently.

That framework matters for a luxury car because a modification’s invoice is not automatically the amount payable after a covered loss. A costly engine conversion, bespoke interior, or set of forged wheels may affect market evidence differently from the amount originally paid. The policy’s definitions, endorsements, deductible, and exclusions control the claim.
Before binding coverage, ask:
- What definition of market value or actual cash value does this policy use?
- How are condition, mileage, factory options, and disclosed modifications considered?
- Is any alternative valuation language offered, and exactly how is it written?
- For a total loss, what evidence may you submit to support the vehicle’s condition and equipment?
- For a repairable loss, how does the insurer handle parts that are unavailable, discontinued, or different from the original equipment?
Do not assume that “agreed value” is available for every luxury car or that it is automatically preferable. The Insurance Information Institute says that for specialty coverage the owner and insurer should agree on the vehicle’s value, but the available valuation method and wording must be verified in the policy offered to you.
Compare ordinary coverage with specialty coverage
The Insurance Information Institute identifies exotic and luxury autos, hot rods, modified vehicles, and other classic, custom, collectible, or antique cars as possible candidates for specialty coverage. That guidance supports obtaining a comparison quote; it does not mean every modified luxury car qualifies or that a specialty policy will have better terms.
| Coverage route | What to investigate | What the cited guidance establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Standard personal-auto policy | Collision and comprehensive limits, valuation definition, factory-option treatment, modification exclusions, and deductibles. | California guidance describes market-value compensation and generally the lesser of repair cost or actual cash value; exact contract terms vary. |
| Standard policy plus additional-equipment endorsement | Covered parts, maximum equipment limit, deductible, valuation, documentation rules, and exclusions. | California defines the endorsement as covering certain non-manufacturer-installed parts and equipment subject to a stated maximum limit. |
| Specialty or collector-auto policy | Eligibility, agreed valuation language if offered, mileage or storage rules, permitted use, modification acceptance, deductibles, and claim process. | The Insurance Information Institute says unusual, exotic, luxury, custom, collectible, and modified vehicles may merit specialty coverage and that owner and insurer should agree on value. Specific terms are not stated in the cited guidance. |
When a car is unusual enough that a normal market comparison may not reflect its equipment or condition, ask both types of insurer to explain their valuation method in writing. Compare the contracts, not just the premium.

Use a like-for-like quote comparison
Obtain written quotes using the same vehicle description, equipment schedule, drivers, garaging location, use, limits, and deductibles. Then place the answers in a comparison sheet.
| Comparison axis | Questions to put beside each quote |
|---|---|
| Vehicle valuation | Is the basis market value, actual cash value, or another stated method? How are condition, factory options, and modifications treated? |
| Equipment limit | Which parts qualify? What is the maximum amount? Is it enough for the documented equipment value? |
| Claim settlement | How are repair costs, total losses, deductibles, unavailable parts, and applicable exclusions handled? |
| Eligibility and use | Are the modifications acceptable? Are there restrictions on mileage, storage, commuting, track events, or other use? |
| Evidence and process | What records are required before the policy starts and after a loss? Who evaluates the vehicle and equipment? |
If a quote leaves a cell unanswered, request the policy form or endorsement and have the insurer identify the controlling paragraph. “Not stated” is not a coverage answer.
Follow this purchase and documentation process
- Describe the car accurately. Provide the VIN, year, trim, mileage, garaging address, normal use, and every factory option and modification.
- Submit the equipment schedule. Attach invoices, photographs, build sheets, and other records the insurer requests. Keep the originals.
- Ask for the physical-damage terms. Confirm collision and comprehensive deductibles, valuation definitions, exclusions, and whether the vehicle limit includes known factory options.
- Request the additional-equipment endorsement. Obtain its covered-equipment definition and maximum limit. Compare that limit with your documented equipment value.
- Ask about eligibility effects. Verify whether wheels, suspension, engine, bodywork, or the way you use the car changes eligibility or creates an exclusion.
- Obtain a specialty comparison when appropriate. An exotic, collectible, heavily modified, or unusually valuable vehicle may justify a second quote with a different valuation approach.
- Get the answers in writing. Ask the insurer to confirm coverage for each listed item, the applicable limit, the valuation method, and required proof.
- Review the issued documents. Check the declarations page and every endorsement against your schedule immediately. Correct errors before a loss occurs.
Keep the policy accurate after installation or purchase changes
Adding a wheel set, repainting the body, replacing an engine, or installing permanent electronics can change the equipment value and the insurer’s underwriting decision. Notify the insurer before or as soon as practical under the policy’s reporting rules. Ask whether the endorsement limit must be increased and whether a new inspection, invoice, or appraisal is needed.

What to do after a covered loss
For repairable damage
Report the loss promptly through the method in your policy, describe the damaged factory and aftermarket components, and provide your equipment schedule and photographs. Ask the adjuster which deductible and endorsement limit apply. California guidance says the general payment is the lesser of repair cost or actual cash value, but the policy and jurisdiction control your claim. Do not authorize expensive modification work on the assumption that the original invoice will be reimbursed; obtain the insurer’s position in writing.
For a total loss
Provide the build sheet, option list, invoices, photographs, maintenance records, and any other records requested. Ask the adjuster to identify whether the vehicle value and equipment limit are being calculated separately. Review the valuation definition in your policy and the deductible applied. If the settlement does not explain how disclosed options or covered equipment were treated, request a written itemization and respond with the records that support your position.
Common mistakes and the practical fix
- Assuming the trim level captures every option. Supply a complete factory build list and ask how each option is valued.
- Relying on a verbal promise that “mods are covered.” Obtain the endorsement, limit, deductible, exclusions, and written confirmation for each item.
- Buying an equipment limit below the documented value. Compare the maximum limit with current replacement estimates and update it after additions.
- Expecting the original invoice after a total loss. Ask which market-value, actual-cash-value, or other policy definition controls.
- Failing to disclose performance or cosmetic work. Report wheels, suspension, engine, body, paint, and permanent electronics; ask whether any affects eligibility.
- Keeping evidence only in the vehicle. Store copies of photographs and records separately so they survive theft or fire.
- Comparing premiums with different assumptions. Align limits, deductibles, equipment schedules, use, and valuation language before choosing.
Check the rules that apply where you live
The California Department of Insurance materials cited here are California consumer guidance. Other states may define actual cash value, required disclosures, endorsements, appraisal procedures, and claim settlements differently. Your policy contract and your state’s insurance regulator control. Read the declarations page, definitions, exclusions, physical-damage provisions, and every endorsement; ask the insurer to explain any term that does not match your equipment schedule.

A concise script for your insurer
“I have listed every factory option and aftermarket modification on this vehicle. Please confirm in writing whether each item is covered, which limit applies, whether it is included in the vehicle’s insured value or only under an additional-equipment endorsement, what deductible and exclusions apply, how a total loss would be valued, and which invoices, photographs, appraisals, or build records you require.”
That written record gives you a clear basis for comparing policies and identifying gaps before you need to make a claim.
