Insure a high-performance electric roadster by obtaining quotes for the exact car from insurers licensed where it will be registered, then comparing the written valuation, total-loss formula, liability limits, deductibles, battery and charging terms, repair conditions, and permitted use. A standard policy may accept the car, but high values, unusual parts, powerful performance, or restricted underwriting can require specialty-car coverage through a licensed local broker.
No responsible guide can name one premium or legal minimum without the country, make and model, model year, market value, driver history, storage, mileage, and use pattern. The examples below come from several markets and show questions to ask, not a worldwide policy standard. Verify the policy schedule, endorsements, exclusions, and local requirements before binding coverage.

Start with the exact risk an insurer will underwrite
Insurers price and accept a vehicle, not a category label. “Electric roadster” does not tell an underwriter the battery size, replacement cost, power output, repair network, theft exposure, or value. Prepare a single, consistent fact sheet before requesting quotes so every insurer is pricing the same risk.

- Exact make, model, trim, battery specification, power output, model year, vehicle identification number when available, and current market or purchase value.
- Factory equipment and documented modifications, including wheels, suspension, software changes, bodywork, or performance parts.
- Where the car is normally garaged, whether it is kept in a secured facility, and whether it is transported or stored seasonally.
- Expected annual mileage and whether the car is a second vehicle, a daily commuter, or used for occasional leisure driving.
Driver and use details
- Every regular driver, licence history, claims and convictions, age, and driving experience.
- Whether use includes commuting, business travel, demonstrations, events, instruction, delivery, or any timed or competitive activity.
- Whether anyone will drive on a racetrack, skid pad, closed course, or other controlled venue. Road coverage should never be assumed to include track use.
Ask each insurer to record these facts on the quotation. A cheaper quote based on lower mileage, fewer drivers, or restricted use is not comparable with a broader quote.

Can a regular insurer cover the roadster?
Sometimes, but acceptance is company- and vehicle-specific. Progressive’s consumer guidance, updated August 15, 2023, says sports-car restrictions vary and that not all insurers cover every high-end vehicle. It identifies make, model, horsepower, size, weight, driving frequency, theft exposure, and the difficulty of replacing parts as factors that can affect eligibility and price. Progressive also says it does not insure cars valued above $150,000 and points owners above that amount toward a specialty insurer. That $150,000 figure is Progressive’s stated limit, not an industry-wide threshold.
Ask a standard insurer directly whether it will insure the exact roadster at its current value and under your intended use. If the answer is no, or if the insurer offers a low limit, limited parts support, or exclusions that make the policy unsuitable, contact a licensed local broker about specialty-car coverage. Request the same written information from both markets so you can compare terms rather than labels.
Get comparable quotes in a controlled process
- Confirm licensing and territory. Use insurers or brokers licensed in the jurisdiction where the roadster will be registered. Legal minimums, policy forms, taxes, and claims rules are local.
- Send the vehicle fact sheet. Include the exact model, value, modifications, storage, mileage, drivers, and every intended use. State explicitly whether track or competition use is excluded or required.
- Request the policy wording. Ask for the quotation, schedule, endorsements, definitions, exclusions, and any battery or charging add-on wording—not only a premium summary.
- Ask how value is set. Have the insurer explain the insured amount, depreciation, valuation evidence, and the total-loss settlement formula. Do not assume an “agreed value” option exists; ask whether it is available and what documentation or conditions apply.
- Set liability limits first. Choose limits appropriate to your assets and local rules before comparing physical-damage deductibles. A low premium can conceal inadequate third-party protection.
- Test the EV provisions. Ask separate questions about accidental battery damage, complete battery replacement, battery fire or self-ignition, charging incidents, towing after a high-voltage warning, and repair by qualified technicians.
- Verify repair logistics. Confirm whether an authorised repairer is mandatory, which facilities can work on the high-voltage system, how parts are sourced, and whether imported parts, storage, diagnostics, or transport have limits.
- Standardise deductibles and use assumptions. Request quotes with the same liability limits, physical-damage deductibles, mileage, named drivers, and permitted use. Record any difference that cannot be standardised.
- Check claims contacts and roadside terms. Ask who arranges towing, whether a flatbed is required, where a disabled EV can be stored or charged, and whether roadside assistance has distance, time, or incident limits.
- Review before payment. Match the issued schedule to the quote, disclose every material fact, and obtain written confirmation of endorsements and exclusions before the policy starts.
Compare the parts of a policy that determine your outcome
| Policy element | Question to ask | Why it matters for an electric roadster |
|---|---|---|
| Insured or declared value | What amount is shown on the schedule, and how is it established or updated? | A high-value car can be underinsured if the amount does not reflect current market value, equipment, taxes, or scarcity. |
| Total-loss settlement | Does the insurer pay market value, a declared amount, replacement cost, or another formula? What evidence and limits apply? | The settlement basis, not the premium label, determines what you receive after theft or irreparable damage. |
| Third-party liability | What bodily-injury, property-damage, and passenger limits apply, and are legal defence costs inside or outside those limits? | High performance does not reduce liability exposure; local minimums may be inadequate for a serious crash. |
| Physical-damage deductible | What deductible applies to collision, comprehensive or own-damage, glass, fire, theft, and battery claims? | A large deductible lowers premium but increases the cash needed after a loss. |
| Use and drivers | Are commuting, business use, additional drivers, annual mileage, or events restricted? | A claim can be affected when actual use falls outside the declared risk. |
| Exclusions | Which damage, locations, activities, modifications, or charging situations are excluded? | Similar words such as “comprehensive” do not prove that battery failure, charging damage, or track driving is covered. |
Valuation is more than the number on a quote
Ask how the insurer handles a total loss when the roadster is rare, imported, modified, or rapidly depreciating. Clarify whether taxes, registration charges, delivery costs, factory options, and documented accessories are included. Ask what happens if comparable vehicles are scarce and how valuation disputes are resolved. Keep invoices, photographs, service records, and evidence of options so the declared amount can be justified.
India’s Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority (IRDAI) tells policyholders to compare premiums, deductibles, coverage, and insured declared values rather than selecting on premium alone. Its guidance says the insured declared value for own-damage cover should reflect the vehicle’s current market value. Those statements concern Indian motor insurance; they are not a rule for other countries.

Liability limits deserve a separate decision
Physical damage to your roadster is only one exposure. A high-speed collision can produce injury, property damage, legal defence costs, and claims from passengers or pedestrians. Ask for the available limits and whether defence costs reduce them. If you carry substantial assets or the car is used frequently, discuss higher limits with a licensed adviser. Do not lower liability merely to make a performance-car premium fit a target budget.
Deductibles should match your cash reserve
Request the deductible for each relevant loss type instead of assuming one amount applies to every claim. Battery damage, glass, theft, fire, collision, and roadside incidents may be treated differently. Choose an amount you could pay immediately without delaying a safety repair, and record whether a special battery deductible or percentage applies.
Read EV battery and high-voltage provisions separately
A policy can cover the vehicle while treating its battery, charging equipment, and high-voltage components differently. Ask for direct answers in writing; “comprehensive” or “fully covered” is not enough to establish that every battery event is insured.

Accidental battery damage and complete replacement
Find out whether an impact, flooding, underbody strike, thermal event, or other accidental cause is covered; whether the battery is repaired or replaced; and whether a new, refurbished, or equivalent unit may be supplied. Ask who decides that a pack is unsafe and whether diagnostic testing is included. Confirm the battery deductible, depreciation, maximum payable amount, and treatment of ancillary components such as cooling systems, wiring, control modules, and enclosure damage.

A Thailand example illustrates why age wording matters. In Roojai’s English “Motor Battery Electric Vehicle Insurance” booklet, version June 2025, compensation for damage requiring full battery replacement is tied to battery age:
| Battery age at damage | Compensation stated in the policy |
|---|---|
| Up to one year | 100% of the price of a new battery at the time of damage |
| Over one through two years | 90% of the price of a new battery at the time of damage |
| Over two through three years | 80% of the price of a new battery at the time of damage |
| Over three through four years | 70% of the price of a new battery at the time of damage |
| Over four through five years | 60% of the price of a new battery at the time of damage |
| More than five years | 50% of the price of a new battery at the time of damage |
This is a term of that specific Thailand policy form, not a universal EV rule. Ask whether your policy depreciates the battery, how age is measured, and whether the percentage applies to the manufacturer’s current price, an approved equivalent, or a capped schedule.
Battery degradation and mechanical failure
Ask whether normal capacity loss, gradual degradation, software faults, manufacturing defects, and mechanical or electrical breakdown are excluded. Accident insurance commonly distinguishes sudden covered damage from wear, maintenance, and warranty issues. Confirm which party—manufacturer, warranty provider, or insurer—handles a failed pack that was not damaged by an insured event.
Battery fire and self-ignition
Do not assume fire wording answers every battery-fire scenario. Taiwan’s Financial Supervisory Commission announced EV reference clauses and add-ons effective July 1, 2024. The referenced main coverage treats accidental vehicle damage, while damage caused solely by battery self-ignition or explosion is excluded under that wording; a separate optional battery self-ignition add-on is available. The same announcement describes optional vehicle-damage and third-party-liability cover during charging.

Taiwan’s reference clauses must be checked against the actual current policy and cannot be generalised to another market. Ask whether a fire that starts while parked, driving, or charging is treated differently; whether damage to a building or charging station is covered; and whether a fire investigation, emergency response, or environmental cleanup has a sub-limit.
Charging equipment and charging incidents
Clarify whether a home wall unit, portable cable, adapter, or public charging connector is insured, and whether ownership or installation by an approved electrician is required. Ask about damage caused by a power surge, incorrect connection, water ingress, third-party equipment, or a charging-station fault. Confirm whether liability while charging is included or requires an add-on, and whether the policy covers damage to the station or only to your car.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Confirm repairer, parts, towing, and safety arrangements
Qualified high-voltage repair
Ask whether repairs must be performed by a manufacturer-authorised facility or by technicians meeting a stated high-voltage qualification. Confirm who may isolate, test, remove, and reinstall the battery. A policy that pays for damage but cannot provide an eligible repairer can leave the car unusable.

Parts sourcing and imported components
Check whether the insurer can use original, equivalent, refurbished, or salvaged parts; who approves substitutions; and how long parts may be held in transit. Roojai’s June 2025 Thailand booklet limits its liability for imported spare parts to the sea-import price and limits covered battery repair or modification work to specified technicians. That clause shows why the parts definition and transport basis belong in your comparison.

Towing and storage
High-voltage vehicles may require a flatbed, isolation procedure, or a quarantine area after a collision or thermal event. Ask whether towing is available after a warning light, immobilisation, flood exposure, or suspected battery damage, not only after a conventional breakdown. Confirm distance limits, destination rules, storage charges, onward transport, and what happens if the nearest qualified repairer is in another city or country.
Repair timing and mobility
Ask whether the policy pays for diagnostics, calibration, software updates, rental transport, or additional storage while a battery or imported part is unavailable. A long repair cycle can be more disruptive for a two-seat roadster than for a household car, so read any daily, per-claim, or total-duration cap.
Account for market-specific rules
The following examples show how wording differs by jurisdiction. They are prompts for local verification, not interchangeable benefits.
| Market and source | Documented point | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| United States — Progressive consumer guidance, updated August 15, 2023 | Sports-car restrictions vary; not every insurer covers every high-end vehicle. Progressive states a $150,000 value limit for its own coverage. | Ask whether the exact roadster exceeds a company’s appetite and seek specialty quotes above any stated limit. |
| India — IRDAI motor-insurance policyholder guidance | Compare premium, deductible, coverage, and insured declared value; own-damage IDV should reflect current market value. Third-party insurance requirements described there are India-specific. | Use the IDV and liability questions, but do not carry Indian legal requirements into another country. |
| Thailand — Roojai policy booklet, version 2025-06 | Full battery replacement compensation declines by battery age from 100% through one year to 50% after five years; technician and imported-parts conditions apply. | Look for age-based depreciation, technician qualifications, and parts-price caps in your own wording. |
| Taiwan — Financial Supervisory Commission announcement, April 9, 2024 | EV reference clauses and add-ons took effect July 1, 2024; battery self-ignition and charging risks can be addressed by separate wording. | Ask whether fire, charging damage, and charging-related liability are included or optional under the current policy. |
| United Kingdom — Financial Conduct Authority value-measures guidance, updated September 11, 2026 | Firms report measures such as claim acceptance rates, average claim payouts, and complaints as a percentage of claims, alongside fair-value requirements. | Where published, use these disclosures as additional context; they do not rank roadster policies or replace reading the contract. |
Use a written quote worksheet
Record each answer beside the premium so a low price cannot hide a narrower contract. A useful worksheet contains these fields:
- Insurer or broker, licence jurisdiction, quote date, policy period, and policy form or endorsement names.
- Exact vehicle description, insured or declared value, valuation method, and total-loss formula.
- Liability limits, passenger or uninsured-driver provisions where applicable, and whether defence costs are inside those limits.
- Collision and other physical-damage deductibles, including any separate battery or glass deductible.
- Annual mileage, named drivers, garaging address, commuting or business use, and event or track exclusions.
- Accidental battery damage, replacement standard, age depreciation, diagnostic costs, degradation and breakdown exclusions.
- Battery fire or self-ignition treatment, charging damage, charging-station liability, and home-equipment cover.
- Authorised-repairer rules, technician qualifications, parts definitions, imported-parts limits, calibration, and software requirements.
- Towing method, high-voltage safety procedure, storage limit, repair destination, rental or mobility benefit, and time caps.
- Claims notification deadline, required photographs or records, dispute route, cancellation terms, and every exclusion that affects your intended use.
Bind only after the issued documents match your answers
- Read the schedule and endorsements line by line after the insurer accepts the risk.
- Check the vehicle value, registration details, drivers, mileage, garaging location, and use classification.
- Confirm that any specialty, battery, charging, fire, or agreed-amount endorsement discussed by the broker is actually attached.
- Save the complete wording, payment receipt, emergency number, claims number, and approved repairer instructions in two locations.
- Correct an error immediately. A verbal assurance that is absent from the issued documents is difficult to rely on after a loss.
Review the cover when the roadster or its use changes
Tell the insurer before adding performance parts, changing the garaging address, increasing mileage, adding a driver, using the car for commuting, or taking it to an event. Recheck the insured value as the market, battery age, and replacement prices change. At renewal, obtain fresh terms rather than assuming a previous battery endorsement, repair network, or valuation will continue unchanged.
The practical decision is straightforward: compare the written settlement basis and EV-specific protections first, then price. If a standard insurer cannot cover the exact high-value roadster on terms that fit its use, a licensed specialty broker is the next route—not a reason to accept an unexplained exclusion or an underinsured value.
