You can sideload an Android Auto-compatible APK onto your phone and expose it to Android Auto by enabling the platform’s Unknown sources developer option. That does not turn an ordinary phone app into a car app, and it does not bypass Google’s category, safety, or compatibility rules.
The method below is mainly useful for testing a developer’s APK or using a media, messaging, IoT, weather, or other supported car app that is not currently available through your normal Google Play installation. Video players, web browsers, screen-mirroring tools, and general phone apps are a different case: sideloading alone will not make them appear on the car display.

Before you start: “not approved” can mean two different things
Android Auto has two separate gates:
- Installation source: whether the APK came from Google Play, another trusted store, or somewhere else.
- Car-app approval and compatibility: whether the app declares an Android Auto-supported category and implements the required car interface.
Android Auto’s Unknown sources setting affects the first gate. It does not remove the second. An ordinary Android app can install successfully on your phone and still be completely absent from the Android Auto launcher.
Supported Android Auto categories include media, messaging notifications, navigation, points of interest, Internet of Things, weather, and certain parked experiences. Google treats Android Auto and Android Automotive OS differently; an app supported on the vehicle’s built-in Android Automotive system is not automatically supported through Android Auto on a connected phone.

1. Install the APK on your phone
Get the APK from the developer or another source you trust. An APK is an installable Android package, but the file extension does not prove that the file is genuine or safe. A modified package can contain malware, request excessive permissions, or steal account and vehicle-related data.
If Android refuses to open the file, grant the app that opened it permission to install unknown apps:
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps.
- Tap Special app access.
- Tap Install unknown apps.
- Select the app you used to open the APK, such as Chrome or a file manager.
- Turn on Allow from this source.
- Return to the APK and install it.
The wording and location can vary by manufacturer. Search Settings for Install unknown apps if those menu names do not match your phone. Disable Allow from this source again after installation if Chrome or the file manager no longer needs it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIf the download contains several APK files, it may be a split package rather than one complete APK. Opening just the base file may produce an installation error. Use the developer’s supplied installer or ADB’s install-multiple command described below.
2. Unlock Android Auto’s developer settings
On Android 10 and later, Android Auto is generally managed as a phone app even when its icon is not prominent in the launcher. Use this route:
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps & notifications.
- Tap See all apps.
- Open Android Auto.
- Tap Advanced, if that option is shown.
- Tap Additional settings in the app.
Some current Android builds omit the Advanced step, so Additional settings in the app may appear directly on Android Auto’s app-information screen.
Once Android Auto’s settings page is open:
- Scroll to the About section.
- Tap Version to display the version and permission information.
- Tap Version and permission info 10 times.
- When Android asks Allow development settings?, tap OK.
Open the overflow menu—the three dots or More button—on the Android Auto settings screen. You should now see Developer settings.

- Open Android Auto’s overflow menu.
- Tap Developer settings.
- Scroll down to the relevant options.
- Turn on Unknown sources or Allow unknown sources.
Google has used both labels in different Android Auto builds. The option is intended for supported media apps, messaging notifications, and parked apps. It does not apply to apps built with the Android for Cars App Library.
After switching it on, disconnect and reconnect your phone to the vehicle. You can also force-close Android Auto and start the connection again. Then open the Android Auto launcher customization on the phone and check whether the installed app is listed and enabled.
4. Check the Android Auto launcher
If the app is compatible, it should appear in the Android Auto app list after the connection restarts. If it is listed on the phone but hidden from the car launcher, check the launcher customization settings and enable it.

If it is not listed at all, the APK probably lacks the declaration Android Auto uses to identify a car app. Typical requirements include:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
| App type | What Android Auto expects |
|---|---|
| Media, messaging, or templated app | The appropriate com.google.android.gms.car.application metadata declaration. |
| Parked app | An activity containing the android.intent.category.CAR_LAUNCHER category. |
| Car App Library app | A suitable CarAppService implementation and a supported category. |
You cannot add these declarations from Android Auto’s settings. They must be present in the app’s package, which means the developer must build the app for Android Auto.
Using ADB instead of tapping an APK
ADB is useful for a developer’s own build, a test package, or an APK that is awkward to install from a file manager. Install Android SDK Platform-Tools on your computer, enable USB debugging on the phone, connect the phone, and approve the computer’s authorization prompt.
For one APK, run:
adb install path_to_apk
If several Android devices are connected, identify the target and specify its serial number:
adb devices
adb -s DEVICE_SERIAL install path_to_apk
For a test APK, use the -t flag:
adb install -t path_to_test_apk
For a package made from multiple APK splits, install all files in the same command:

ADB still installs the package on the phone. It does not copy an Android Auto app into the vehicle’s head unit. Android Auto is phone-based; Android Automotive OS is the separate platform where compatible apps can be installed directly into the car.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What this method cannot do
It cannot make a normal phone app appear on the car screen
Android Auto does not provide a general-purpose second display for every Android app. An app with no Android Auto manifest declaration remains a phone app, regardless of whether it came from Play, an APK file, or ADB.
It does not bypass driver-distraction restrictions
Android Auto controls what can be shown and interacted with while driving. A parked-only app may be visible when the vehicle is stationary and close as soon as motion is detected. That behavior is expected, not an installation failure.
It is not the supported route for Android for Cars App Library apps
Google’s documentation says the Android Auto unknown-source switch does not apply to Android for Cars App Library apps. Developers testing those apps on a real vehicle should use Google Play Internal App Sharing or an Internal Test Track. These options avoid public Play distribution while using a supported installation path.
It will not turn Android Auto into a video or browser platform
Android Automotive OS has categories that Android Auto does not expose in the same way. Sideloading a browser, video player, or screen-mirroring app therefore does not guarantee—and normally will not produce—a usable Android Auto experience.

Common problems and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause and fix |
|---|---|
| The APK will not install. | Enable Allow from this source for the app opening the file. If it is a split package, install all splits together. A package-signature conflict with an existing version can also prevent installation. |
| The APK installs, but the app is missing from Android Auto. | The package has no supported Android Auto declaration, uses an unsupported category, or is a Car App Library app that is not covered by the unknown-source switch. |
| The app appears while parked but not while driving. | It is probably a parked-only experience or is restricted by the app’s category and driver-distraction rules. |
| The parked app closes when the car moves. | This is normal Android Auto behavior. Parked-app activities are automatically exited when motion is detected. |
| A permission prompt never appears on the car screen. | On Android 15, runtime permissions must be handled on the phone rather than accepted on the head unit. |
| The app launches on the phone but cannot open another app on the car display. | Android Auto blocks most activity-launching intents to unsupported apps. Web-page or Play Store links may open on the phone; arbitrary activity launches can be blocked. |
Security and support considerations
Only install packages from a source you can verify. Prefer the developer’s release page, check published checksums or signatures where available, and avoid APKs advertised as “unlocked,” “premium,” or modified. Review the permissions requested after installation and uninstall the app if they do not fit its purpose.
Also remember that an APK can stop working after an Android Auto update, a phone update, or a change to Google’s car-app rules. The unknown-source switch is a testing facility, not a promise that every sideloaded package will remain available. Google can still require a supported category, trusted distribution, or a different testing path.
FAQ
Can I install any Android app on Android Auto?
No. Sideloading installs an APK on the phone, but Android Auto only exposes apps that declare a supported car category and implement the required interface. Ordinary phone apps will remain phone-only.
Why does my sideloaded app install but not appear in Android Auto?
It may lack the required Android Auto manifest declaration, belong to an unsupported category, be a parked-only app, or use the Android for Cars App Library, which is not covered by the Unknown sources switch.
Is enabling Android Auto Unknown sources safe?
The setting permits Android Auto to consider apps installed outside the normal trusted sources, but it does not verify the APK. Download only from a source you trust, review permissions, and turn off the phone’s Allow from this source permission when finished.
Can ADB install an app directly into my car?
No. The command installs the APK on the Android phone. Android Auto runs from the phone, while Android Automotive OS is the separate vehicle platform on which apps can be installed directly.
The Bottom Line
To try a compatible but unapproved APK, install it on the phone, unlock Android Auto’s developer settings by tapping Version and permission info 10 times, enable Unknown sources, and reconnect the car. If the app still does not appear, the problem is usually compatibility—not the installation. Android Auto cannot turn an ordinary phone app, browser, video player, or mirror tool into a supported driving app.
