Start by confirming which retrofit system actually fits your Porsche—not by removing the radio. PCCM Plus versions are generation-specific, and compatibility and features can also depend on model year, country, and factory audio equipment. Identify those details first; then confirm the exact part and installation requirements with a Porsche Centre, Porsche Classic Partner, or qualified specialist. Porsche recommends professional installation.
Which PCCM Plus version fits your Porsche?
“Older Porsche” covers several generations, and PCCM Plus is not one universal unit. Porsche’s product information distinguishes systems by vehicle generation and says feature availability can vary with the car’s model, equipment, and country. Use this guide to narrow down the right family, then verify the exact part number and regional version for your car.

Porsche’s 29 September 2026 announcement says the new versions are available through Porsche Centres and that installation at a Porsche Centre is recommended. Porsche also states that its current classic systems are intended for standard-production cars in the classic service scope with 1-DIN or 2-DIN slots, with exceptions including the 356 and Carrera GT. Neither broad statement replaces a check against your car’s exact equipment and the retrofit kit’s part number.
Feature differences matter as well as physical fit. For example, Porsche’s information for the 997/987 I system describes wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto using USB, with map data supplied separately on an SD card. The 2026 versions include wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and online map updates. These features should not be assumed interchangeable between versions; check the specification for the regional part you are considering.

What to identify before buying
Record the car’s generation, model year, country or market, current radio or PCM unit, and factory sound-system equipment. Include the amplifier and speaker configuration, such as whether the car has Bose, and any relevant steering-wheel or instrument-cluster controls. If you are unsure what was fitted at the factory, have a Porsche Centre or specialist identify it from the car’s specification.
- Exact unit and regional version: Match the kit’s part number to the generation, model year, and market. Radio standards and supported features can differ by country.
- Audio-system compatibility: Confirm whether the kit supports the car’s amplifier, speakers, and any fiber-optic audio hardware. A community-authored 9×7 installation guide describes MOST fiber-optic hardware in some configurations; that is not evidence that every 997 or 987 has it.
- Supporting parts: Ask whether the installation needs an antenna line, adapters, or other configuration-specific components. Porsche’s 996/986 technical information lists additional requirements for some setups, including a specified antenna line on certain 986 configurations.
- Included instructions and parts: Check what comes with the exact kit. The Porsche Shop listing for 997/987 I says installation instructions are not included.
What the installation involves
The process is more than sliding out one screen and plugging in another. The details depend on the car and audio configuration, so the sequence below is a planning outline—not a universal, vehicle-specific removal procedure.

- Confirm fitment and parts before disassembly. Have the installer verify the part number, regional version, wiring and antenna requirements, and any configuration-specific audio components against your car.
- Check the original sound system first. Porsche’s 996/986 technical information says to check that the audio system works before installation and repair existing faults first. A retrofit is a poor time to discover an unrelated speaker, amplifier, or wiring problem.
- Isolate the battery and remove trim only under the correct service instructions. Porsche’s 996/986 technical document includes removing the battery cover and disconnecting and covering the battery, followed by removal of specified radio, HVAC, switch trim, vents, and console components. Those details apply to that documented application; they should not be copied as instructions for other generations.
- Install and reconnect the unit for the car’s configuration. Antenna, audio, and control connections must match the vehicle and kit. If the car has fiber-optic audio or unfamiliar wiring, stop and use a qualified installer rather than improvising adapters or connections.
- Configure the system and verify operation before reassembly. Porsche’s PCCM Plus operating manual says to run “Auto-configure PCCM Plus” on first use to ensure the full range of functions. The manual lists menu paths for 997/987 systems; verify the correct path for the installed generation. A community iFixit guide for 9×7 cars also describes checking connections and test operation before fully seating the unit, but it is secondary DIY guidance, not Porsche factory procedure.
Why professional installation is the safer default
Porsche’s operating manual gives this instruction: “For information on how to install the Porsche Classic Communication Management Plus, please contact a Porsche Classic Partner or an Authorised Porsche Dealership.” That is the clearest route if you need the right instructions for a particular trim, market, or audio package. It is especially important if you cannot identify the audio hardware, antenna connections, or safe trim-removal procedure.
Porsche’s 996/986 technical information is hosted by ManualsLib rather than Porsche’s own site, and the 9×7 iFixit guide is community-authored. Both can offer configuration-specific context, but neither establishes a universal procedure for every 911, Cayman, or Boxster. Ask the installer to use current service information for the exact vehicle and kit.

Checks to make before accepting the installation
- Confirm that the unit powers up and the sound system works through the car’s speakers.
- Check the functions promised for the specific kit and market, including smartphone connection and navigation or map-update method.
- Verify any steering-wheel or instrument-cluster integration that applies to the vehicle’s equipment.
- Make sure the installer has completed the generation-appropriate first-use configuration before finalizing the job.
- Ask the installer to resolve any fault or missing function before the trim is fully refitted.
