1. Identify the truck before judging its condition
Record the truck’s year, series designation, drivetrain configuration, engine and transmission if known, and any visible modifications. 2. Set up a safe, useful inspection
Inspect the truck outside or in a shop on a firm, level surface. Bright portable lighting, a camera or phone, a small inspection mirror, and clean rags make concealed areas easier to document. A lift provides better access, but it should be used by a qualified shop that knows how to support a vintage ladder frame without damaging weak rails or suspension mounts.
- Ask the owner not to wash or undercoat the chassis immediately before you arrive; fresh coating can obscure leaks and repairs.
- Photograph the truck as found, then take close images of each suspect area with a wider image showing its location.
- Do not crawl beneath an unsupported truck or rely on a jack alone.
- Keep notes separated into observations, likely causes, and questions for a mechanic. Do not turn an unverified suspicion into a repair estimate.
3. Inspect the complete frame
The frame is a structure, not a single visible section. Examine both side rails along their entire accessible length, all brackets, every crossmember, suspension and steering attachments, and the areas where the body is secured. Period Dodge maintenance guidance calls for checking the frame, brackets, side rails, and crossmembers for condition, security, and alignment.
Side rails
Follow each rail from front to rear. Look for corrosion scale, perforation, dents, buckling, cracks, elongated holes, missing fasteners, and abrupt changes in surface or profile. Compare the left and right sides: an isolated difference may indicate impact damage, a repair, or a component that has shifted.
Pay attention to the top and inner faces of the rails, where dirt and moisture can remain out of sight. A rail that looks acceptable from the outside can still be weakened on a concealed face. If access is limited, record the limitation instead of assuming the hidden metal is sound.

Brackets and crossmembers
Inspect spring, steering, shock, engine, transmission, transfer-case, bumper, body, and fuel-system brackets where fitted. Check the metal around bolt holes for cracking, distortion, corrosion, or movement. Crossmembers should be checked for rust-through, crushed sections, loose fasteners, and welds that do not match the surrounding construction.
Alignment and deformation
Look for rails that are not parallel, crossmembers that sit at an unusual angle, mismatched body gaps, or mounting holes that no longer line up naturally. A bent frame is not diagnosed by one uneven panel gap, but a combination of displaced brackets, altered geometry, and visible repair work warrants professional measurement.
Added plating and welded repairs
Do not automatically treat reinforcement plates as either good or bad. Photograph their boundaries and inspect where the plate ends, whether corrosion is trapped behind it, and whether the original rail has cracked or perforated. A repair that covers a weak section can make the surface look solid while leaving the underlying condition unknown. Ask for photographs or invoices from before the repair when available.
Attachment points
Inspect body mounts and nearby metal for corrosion, torn holes, missing hardware, and movement. Check whether the cab or bed sits squarely on the chassis. The available period material does not establish a model-spanning ranking of “worst” rust locations, so do not label one spot the universal failure point for every Power Wagon.

4. Decide what the rust actually means
Rust should be described precisely rather than reduced to “a little” or “a lot.” Record whether you see intact metal with discoloration, layered scale, a pinhole, open perforation, a crack, deformation, or a previous repair. The visible category determines what should happen next, but no universal corrosion-depth pass/fail limit is established for all vintage Power Wagons.

A magnet, probe, or coating removal can produce misleading impressions when used casually and can damage a vehicle that is not yours. Obtain the owner’s permission and let a qualified inspector choose any test that could affect paint or metal. A clean-looking finish, fresh underseal, or recent paint is not evidence that the frame is sound.
5. Inspect the drivetrain without overclaiming what a road test proves
Period maintenance guidance calls for checking transmission and transfer-case condition, mounting, controls, and leaks. Apply that guidance component by component and distinguish what you can observe externally from what requires internal diagnosis.

Transmission
- Look for cracks, impact damage, loose mounting hardware, and oil or gear-lubricant leaks around the case, seals, and connection points.
- With the engine off, note whether the shift lever and linkage move through their intended positions without binding or excessive looseness.
- During a controlled road test, record difficult engagement, grinding, jumping out of gear, abnormal noise, or vibration. These symptoms identify a need for diagnosis; they do not prove the exact internal failure.
Transfer case
- Inspect the transfer-case housing, mounting, fasteners, linkage, and output areas for damage or leakage.
- Confirm that the controls move as expected for the truck’s configuration. Do not force a lever that will not engage.
- Ask whether the case was recently serviced or replaced, and compare the installed unit with the truck’s documented series.
Mounts, controls, and surrounding structure
A leak is not only a lubrication issue. Oil can soften accumulated dirt, hide a crack, or run onto a frame bracket and make the source difficult to locate. Trace the wet path upward to the highest fresh point you can identify. Check whether the transmission and transfer-case mounts are secure and whether their movement has damaged a crossmember or control linkage.

Road-test limits
A road test can reveal engagement and noise symptoms, but it cannot certify internal gears, bearings, shafts, or case condition. Stop if braking, steering, tire, suspension, or frame integrity appears questionable. Have uncertain noises, engagement problems, vibration, or persistent leakage evaluated by a mechanic familiar with vintage four-wheel-drive trucks.
6. Use this inspection sequence in the field
- Confirm identity. Write down the year, series, drivetrain configuration, modifications, and available records before examining condition.
- Walk around the truck. Photograph the stance, panel alignment, obvious repairs, and any signs that the body is sitting unevenly on the chassis.
- Inspect frame rails front to rear. Examine both sides, including inner and upper surfaces that are visible from safe access points.
- Inspect brackets and crossmembers. Check suspension, steering, powertrain, bumper, body, and other structural attachments for corrosion, cracks, looseness, and distortion.
- Check alignment clues. Compare rail spacing, crossmember position, mount locations, and body-to-frame alignment. Record anything that needs measurement rather than guessing a dimension.
- Examine repairs. Photograph added plates and welds, inspect their edges, and ask for earlier repair documentation.
- Check body and cab mounts. Look for rusted surrounding metal, torn holes, missing hardware, and movement.
- Inspect the transmission and transfer case. Check condition, mounting, controls, and fresh leakage, then trace any fluid path to its highest visible source.
- Conduct only a controlled road test. Note engagement, noise, vibration, and gear behavior without treating symptoms as a definitive internal diagnosis.
- Classify follow-up. Separate cosmetic corrosion from areas requiring a structural or drivetrain specialist, and do not price major repairs until the concealed condition is known.
7. Compare two Power Wagons on the same axes
When choosing between trucks, inspect each one in the same order and document comparable evidence. The categories below are practical comparison axes, not a standardized scoring system. No published weighting or universal “walk-away” rule establishes that one defect always outweighs another.

Use photographs and written observations rather than a single numerical score. A truck with more visible surface rust may be preferable to one with a freshly coated frame hiding perforation or an undocumented structural repair.

Arrange a qualified inspection before treating the truck as roadworthy or assigning a firm repair budget when you find frame perforation, suspected structural repair, deformation, misalignment, severe scale near an attachment, unexplained movement, or drivetrain symptoms you cannot identify. Ask the shop whether it regularly works on vintage Dodge four-wheel-drive trucks and whether it can inspect the frame and driveline rather than only perform a general used-car check.

Bring your photographs, identification record, and questions. Ask the inspector to separate immediate safety concerns, repairable defects, and cosmetic work. That separation is more useful than a single “good” or “bad” verdict because restoration priorities and purchase decisions differ.
9. Choose reference material that matches the truck
A shop manual explains service procedures; an owner’s manual may cover operation and routine maintenance; a parts book helps identify assemblies and compatibility. Use the publication that explicitly covers the truck’s year and series, and verify whether a modified vehicle still matches the book’s configuration.
Examples listed by Vintage Power Wagons include a four-wheel-drive Power Wagon shop manual, an owner’s manual covering 1945–1971, and a WM300 parts book covering 1960–1971. Those date ranges are coverage descriptions for the listed publications, not proof that every truck in the range is identical. - It can identify evidence that warrants a structural or mechanical specialist.
- It cannot establish the internal condition of a transmission or transfer case from a short road test.
