Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteThe safest way to buy a used Volvo S90 is to verify the VIN and records, check recall and campaign status, inspect the car in person, drive that exact vehicle, and pay an independent, Volvo-capable mechanic for a written pre-purchase inspection. A clean appearance, a seller’s assurances, a history report, or a generic code scan cannot establish the car’s complete condition.
This guide is primarily U.S.-focused. S90 equipment, service intervals, warranty coverage, and powertrains vary by model year, market, trim, and VIN. Match every finding to the car’s exact model-year Service and Warranty booklet or owner’s manual.

1. Gather the right information before you visit
Ask the seller for the vehicle identification number (VIN), current mileage, title status, ownership details, maintenance invoices, accident or flood history, warranty documents, number of keys, and the exact trim and powertrain. Ask directly about warning lights, diagnostic codes, recalls, service campaigns, and repairs the seller knows about.

Use the VIN as your starting point
Compare the VIN supplied by the seller with the VIN on the vehicle and its paperwork. Do not rely on a listing description for the model year, engine, trim, or equipment. The VIN determines which maintenance schedule, recall actions, software, warranty terms, and hybrid procedures apply.

Order a vehicle-history report, but treat it as one clue
Consumer.gov’s August 2024 car-buying guidance says a history report can show previous owners and mileage and may include accident or flood damage. It can miss unreported damage, incorrect mileage, work performed without an insurance claim, and mechanical problems that never entered a reporting database. Use the report to identify questions for the seller and mechanic, not as a substitute for examining the car.
Check recalls and campaigns separately
Search the VIN with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recall lookup. NHTSA states that its results can omit a recently announced recall before affected VINs are identified, recalls more than 15 years old, manufacturer service campaigns, and international recalls. Ask a Volvo retailer to check the VIN for open recalls and service campaigns, then request documentation showing completed work.
Match records to the official schedule
Volvo’s U.S. S90 service guidance says to follow the maintenance schedule in the applicable Service and Warranty booklet and retain receipts. Compare recorded dates and mileage with the schedule for that particular car. Missing invoices do not prove maintenance was skipped, but a pattern of unexplained gaps should lower your confidence and be reflected in the price or your decision.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsArrange your own inspection before negotiating seriously
Choose the mechanic yourself rather than accepting only a seller-provided inspection. Ask whether the shop has Volvo diagnostic capability, can inspect the car on a lift, and—if it is a Twin Engine plug-in hybrid—has appropriate high-voltage training and equipment. Book the inspection before you commit to a nonrefundable purchase or deposit.
2. Identify the exact S90 you are evaluating
Two S90s with similar mileage can have different equipment, service requirements, warranties, and powertrains. Record the model year, engine or Twin Engine designation, drivetrain, trim, options, mileage, and in-service date. Confirm that advertised features are actually installed; do not assume every S90 has the same cameras, parking aids, driver-assistance systems, heated equipment, or charging hardware.

Why the powertrain matters
A conventional S90 and a plug-in-hybrid/Twin Engine S90 require different inspection expertise. The hybrid adds a high-voltage battery, charging equipment, power electronics, and orange high-voltage wiring. A qualified technician should evaluate those systems; a buyer should never remove covers or touch high-voltage components.
Check what warranty remains
Read the warranty documents for the actual VIN, including mileage and time limits, exclusions, transfer rules, and any hybrid-system coverage. Certification is not a universal condition report. Volvo Cars USA’s 2024 Certified by Volvo material describes an inspection and road test covering more than 170 points, including exterior, interior, powertrain, safety features, tires, wheels, and advanced safety systems. Treat that as the stated scope of that program, not proof that every used S90 has received it or that a certified car cannot develop a fault. Verify current local program and warranty terms.

3. Perform a systematic walk-around
Inspect in daylight on a level surface, preferably with the car dry and cold. Ask permission before opening compartments or moving seats. Take photographs and notes so you can give the mechanic a precise list of concerns.
Exterior and structure
- View each body panel from several angles for uneven gaps, ripples, overspray, mismatched paint, corrosion, and evidence of impact repair.
- Check the windshield and other glass for cracks, chips, delamination, and a VIN that matches the paperwork where applicable.
- Operate every exterior light, including turn signals, brake lamps, reverse lamps, fog or auxiliary lamps, and license-plate illumination.
- Inspect door, trunk, and hood seals for cuts, displacement, or signs of water entry. Look inside the trunk and under removable floor coverings for dampness, staining, or a musty smell.
- Look underneath only where it is safe to do so. Note fluid spots, damaged shields, bent components, corrosion, or fresh underbody coating that could conceal repairs. Do not crawl beneath an unsupported vehicle.
Panel alignment or fresh detailing can suggest previous work, but neither proves a structural problem. Have any suspected impact, corrosion, or water intrusion assessed on a lift by the inspector.
Wheels and tires
- Confirm all four tires are the correct size and rating for the exact S90 and that the tires are an appropriate matching set.
- Measure or have the mechanic measure tread depth, and look for shoulder wear, cupping, cracks, bulges, puncture repairs, and uneven wear across each tread.
- Inspect wheels for bends, cracks, severe curb damage, and corrosion around the bead area.
- Check the tire-pressure warning system after confirming pressures are set correctly. Volvo specifically recommends checking tire pressure and tire condition.
Uneven wear can reflect alignment, suspension, steering, or tire problems. The visual check identifies a question; it does not establish which component needs replacement.

This automotive diagnostic scanner is designed for wide vehicle coverage; please check compatibility with your vehicle before purchase
Cabin, seats, and cargo area
- Look beneath floor mats and carpets for moisture, stains, corrosion, or evidence of drying after a leak.
- Check seat upholstery, powered adjustments, heating or ventilation controls if fitted, head restraints, and seatbelts for damage and proper operation.
- Open the trunk, inspect its trim and seal, and verify the spare-tire or tire-repair equipment specified for that car is present.
- Confirm the number of keys, owner’s manual, Service and Warranty booklet, charging cable if applicable, and maintenance receipts.
Warning lamps and electrical equipment
With the engine off, switch the ignition on and observe the instrument panel. Warning lamps should illuminate for their self-test and then behave normally after start-up. Record any lamp that remains on, flashes, or does not appear when expected; do not accept a seller’s explanation without diagnosis.
Test the center display, navigation or connected functions present on that car, audio, climate controls, windows, mirrors, locks, seat controls, cameras, parking aids, exterior lights, and driver-assistance features. A feature that works intermittently is still a defect to document.
These are buyer screening steps, not measurements of component wear. A mechanic must inspect brakes, suspension, leaks, wiring, and structure with suitable tools.
4. Test-drive the actual car
Drive the S90 yourself with the seller’s permission. Consumer.gov recommends conditions similar to your normal use, including heavy traffic if that is how you will drive it. If practical, arrange to start from cold; a warm engine can conceal start-up behavior.
- Before moving: Confirm seat, mirror, steering-wheel, belt, climate, and display operation. Check whether any warning message appears after the car is started.
- Low-speed streets: Listen for knocks, clicks, squeaks, or rubbing while turning, passing over uneven pavement, and moving away from a stop. Note steering effort and whether the car tracks straight.
- Acceleration and shifting: Observe engine response, transmission engagement, hesitation, surging, harshness, and unusual vibration. A symptom alone does not identify the failed part; record the exact conditions for the mechanic.
- Braking: Brake progressively in a safe location. Note pull, pulsation, grinding, vibration, excessive pedal travel, or warning messages. Volvo’s brake-system guidance includes checks that may require qualified technicians and special instruments.
- Highway conditions: At legal speeds and in safe traffic, check straight-line tracking, steering centering, wind or tire noise, vibration, and stability. Do not perform aggressive maneuvers to provoke a fault.
- Controls and assistance: Verify climate performance and relevant cameras, parking sensors, lane or collision warnings, and other driver-assistance functions installed on that exact car. Keep full attention on driving and do not disable safety systems merely to test them.
- After the drive: Look for new warning messages, fluid spots, unusual odors, cooling-fan behavior, or changes in the brake or steering feel. Let the mechanic interpret the symptom.
5. Pay for an independent Volvo-capable inspection
Ask for a written report with photographs, measured wear where relevant, diagnostic results, safety findings, and estimated repair costs. The inspection should cover the items below.

| Area | What to request | Why it affects the decision |
|---|---|---|
| Powertrain | Check engine, transmission, cooling, mounts, drive components, leaks, fluid condition, and stored faults. | Separates normal age-related service from defects that can create immediate or expensive risk. |
| Brakes | Measure pad and rotor condition, inspect calipers and lines, and assess brake-fluid condition and warning systems. | Safety-critical wear should be priced before purchase. |
| Steering and suspension | Inspect joints, bushings, shocks or struts, springs, wheel bearings, alignment-related wear, and steering operation. | Explains pulling, noise, vibration, or uneven tire wear found on the drive. |
| Tires and wheels | Measure tread and pressure, inspect wear patterns, and check wheels for damage. | Identifies immediate replacement or alignment costs. |
| Body and structure | Inspect lift points, underbody, corrosion, evidence of collision repair, seals, and water intrusion. | Structural or flood damage can outweigh cosmetic appeal. |
| Electrical and safety systems | Scan appropriate modules with Volvo-capable equipment and test installed lighting, restraint, camera, parking, and assistance systems. | A generic engine scan may miss faults in other modules. |
| Hybrid system, if fitted | Use qualified hybrid procedures to assess high-voltage components, battery-related messages, charging operation, and associated cooling or power electronics. | High-voltage work requires trained personnel and can materially change ownership risk. |
Volvo Cars Support US states: “Volvo recommends having an authorized Volvo workshop perform service and maintenance.” That is a recommendation for qualified service, not a requirement that only a retailer can inspect the car. An independent Volvo specialist with the correct equipment is a reasonable alternative. Volvo also notes that some checks require special instruments and a qualified technician.
Understand what a scan can and cannot tell you
A basic OBD-II scanner can read some stored emissions-related faults and readiness information. It is useful for screening a check-engine concern, but a generic reader may not access Volvo-specific modules, manufacturer data, hybrid systems, restraint systems, or driver-assistance faults. Clearing codes before you arrive can also reset readiness monitors without repairing the underlying problem. Use a Volvo-capable diagnostic scan as part of the inspection, never as its replacement.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.6. Extra checks for a Twin Engine plug-in hybrid
Confirm the charging cable and any supplied accessories are present. With the seller’s permission and appropriate supervision, connect the car using the correct equipment and observe whether charging starts, whether the displayed status is consistent, and whether warning messages appear. Do not infer battery health from a single displayed range estimate.
Ask the qualified shop to assess the high-voltage system and battery according to Volvo’s procedures. Volvo warns that high-voltage components and orange wiring may be handled only by trained and qualified Volvo service technicians. Do not remove covers, probe connectors, or touch orange cables yourself. If a warning message, charging fault, impact damage, or water exposure is found, stop the inspection and obtain specialist diagnosis before driving or negotiating.

This is an example of why VIN-level checking matters. It does not mean every 2025 S90 is affected, and it does not replace documentation showing that the particular car’s repair was completed. Recall status can change as manufacturers identify vehicles and publish actions.
8. Turn the report into a buying decision
Ask the inspector to classify findings instead of giving you an undifferentiated list.
| Finding category | Typical action |
|---|---|
| Urgent safety or structural issue | Do not complete the purchase until the problem is repaired and independently verified. Walk away if the seller will not allow proper diagnosis. |
| Near-term maintenance | Obtain a written estimate, subtract realistic costs from the car’s value, and decide whether the adjusted price still works. |
| Optional cosmetic work | Decide based on your priorities; do not let cosmetic improvement distract from safety or mechanical findings. |
| Unresolved diagnostic result | Pay for further diagnosis rather than guessing. A “no code” result does not prove that a symptom is harmless. |
Compare the written estimate with the seller’s price, remaining warranty, certification terms, mileage, and likely near-term service. Consumer.gov advises asking for the total price, including costs and fees. Put any promised repair, replacement, or warranty term in writing before signing.

9. Compare several S90s on the same evidence
When you have more than one candidate, use a consistent worksheet rather than choosing the newest-looking car. Record these factors for each VIN:
- Service documentation and compliance with the applicable schedule.
- Title, ownership, accident, and flood history.
- VIN recall and campaign status, with completion records.
- Independent inspection findings and estimated near-term costs.
- Model year, powertrain, trim, and options that match your needs.
- Mileage and present mechanical and cosmetic condition.
- Remaining warranty and any certification terms you can verify.
- Full purchase price, taxes, fees, and required equipment.
Current evidence does not support ranking S90 model years by reliability or claiming a particular year has a known population-wide failure rate. Choose the individual car with the strongest documented maintenance, cleanest verified history, best inspection results, and acceptable total cost.
