Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe dependable way to screen a used Toyota or Subaru is to combine four checks: verify the VIN and records, review a vehicle-history report and open recalls, inspect the body and underside in daylight, and pay an independent mechanic for a written pre-purchase inspection. A walkaround can reveal rust, leaks, poor repairs, and warning signs, but it cannot certify that a car is safe or accident-free.
Why a single check is not enough
Each source of information answers a different question. A history report may show ownership, title branding, insurance losses, salvage or flood records, and some reported accidents or repairs. It is not a physical inspection and may omit mechanical defects or damage that was never reported. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) recommends using a history report and still obtaining an independent inspection.

Recall status is separate again. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) lookup uses the vehicle identification number (VIN), and in some cases a plate, to identify unrepaired safety recalls. A recall result is not a condition report: it does not tell you whether the car has rust, a leaking engine, hidden collision repairs, or other wear.

Prepare before you see the car
Get the VIN, records, and inspection permission
Ask the seller for the VIN, maintenance records, and permission to take the car to a mechanic you choose. Compare the VIN on the paperwork with the vehicle’s visible VIN locations. Subaru’s certification checklist calls out the door-jamb plate, dashboard plate, and engine area; locations and markings vary by vehicle, so use the owner’s manual or a qualified technician for the exact arrangement.
A discrepancy does not by itself establish fraud or a legal violation. Stop the purchase process and have a qualified shop investigate any missing, altered, unreadable, or inconsistent identification rather than removing parts or trying to make a legal determination yourself.
Obtain a history report, understanding its limits
Use a report from an NMVTIS-approved provider for title, insurance-loss, and salvage information. Other providers may add accident and repair data. The FTC does not endorse a particular report company, and no report can document every collision, flood, or repair. Compare the report with the seller’s records and explanation of the car’s past.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Check for unrepaired recalls
Run the VIN or, where supported, the license plate through NHTSA’s recall lookup before the appointment. Record the campaign number and remedy status. Ask the seller who will arrange the repair and obtain written confirmation when it is completed. A “no open recall” result should not be presented as proof that the vehicle is mechanically sound.
Arrange the appointment correctly
Schedule the viewing in daylight with the car reasonably clean and dry. Dirt can hide corrosion, while rain can hide paint texture and seepage. Ask to see a cold start; a warm engine can conceal difficult starting, smoke, or warning lights that appear immediately after startup. Plan enough time for a road test and a lift inspection, not merely a quick lap around the block.
- Bring the VIN, history report, service records, a flashlight, gloves, and paper for notes.
- Ask whether the seller will allow a mechanic selected by you to inspect the car.
- Confirm who pays for the inspection and whether a written report with estimates will be supplied.
- Do not rely on a dealer’s “certified” statement as a substitute for your own inspection.
Inspect safely and use an optional code scan appropriately
Look under the car only where you can do so safely. Never crawl beneath a vehicle supported solely by a jack, and do not dismantle components during a seller’s appointment. A lift inspection by a professional is safer and can expose corrosion or leaks that are invisible from the ground.

An inexpensive OBD-II scanner can be a preliminary aid for reading some diagnostic trouble codes. It is not equivalent to the manufacturer diagnostic equipment used in a Subaru certification process, and compatibility and available data vary by vehicle. A clean consumer scan cannot evaluate rust, structural repairs, fluid leaks, or every intermittent fault. Do not treat it as a pass certificate.

Compare panels before interpreting differences
Stand several feet away and walk around the car in one direction. Compare panel gaps, paint color and texture, trim alignment, lamp fit, and the apparent shape of each panel. A gap that is wider at one end, a bumper that sits proud of a fender, or a lamp that does not match its mate deserves a question. Replacement parts, ordinary repainting, or previous cosmetic work can have harmless explanations, so a mismatch is a lead to investigate, not proof of a crash.
View the car from low angles and in reflected light. Look for overspray on rubber seals, uneven clear coat, sanding marks, paint edges inside jambs, or fasteners with disturbed paint. These observations can identify repaired areas, but only a technician can determine whether an affected area includes structural damage.
Check the places where moisture collects
Open every door, the trunk or hatch, and the hood. Inspect seams and lower edges where dirt and water remain:
- Door jambs and the metal around hinges and latches.
- Rocker panels and the lower edges behind plastic trim.
- Wheel openings, inner fender lips, and the areas behind splash shields that are visible without removal.
- Floor edges, spare-tire wells, trunk or cargo floors, and drain areas.
- Accessible frame rails, subframes, suspension mounts, and other structural members from a safe position.
Surface discoloration is different from metal that is flaking, perforated, or soft. Push nothing through corrosion and do not scrape away undercoating to “see what is underneath”; ask the mechanic to evaluate the metal on a lift.

Recognize structural red flags
The FTC Buyers Guide lists frame cracks, corrective welds, rusted-through frame or body areas, and “dog tracks” (a bent or twisted frame that causes the car to travel out of alignment) as examples of defects. Fresh weld beads, visibly heated metal, creased rails, ripples in a floor or rail, or substantial corrosion at suspension mounting points should end a casual inspection and trigger professional assessment.

Serious structural corrosion or unexplained repair work can affect crash protection, alignment, tire wear, and the cost of ownership. Do not assume that a car drives straight on a short test drive because hidden damage is impossible to rule out visually.
| Area | What to look for | How to handle it |
|---|---|---|
| Panel edges and gaps | Uneven spacing, displaced trim, mismatched paint or lamp fit | Ask for repair records and have a technician check attachment points |
| Door jambs and rocker panels | Blistering, flaking scale, perforation, or fresh paint over corrosion | Photograph the area and request a lift inspection |
| Frame, subframes, and mounts | Cracks, corrective welds, buckling, rust-through, or crushed sections | Pause the transaction until a qualified professional assesses structure |
| Trunk, cargo, and floor areas | Water stains, dampness, rust around seams, or distorted metal | Check for leak sources and collision repair evidence |
Check for leaks without misdiagnosing residue
Start with the parking surface
Ask that the car be moved from its usual spot, then look at the clean surface for fresh drops or wet patches. Note where a mark sits relative to the front, center, or rear of the vehicle. Do not identify a fluid by color alone: oil, coolant, water, transmission fluid, and cleaning products can look different depending on age, lighting, and the surface.
Light staining or a dry film is not automatically a failure. The important questions are whether the residue is wet, growing, actively dripping, or coming from a component that is expensive or unsafe to ignore.
Inspect the engine and cooling system
With the engine off and cool enough to examine safely, look for wetness around the engine, oil pan, filter area, transmission case, hoses, radiator, water pump area, thermostat housing, and expansion or overflow tank. Check for a low coolant level, crusty deposits at hose connections, split hoses, damaged radiator fins, or a sweet odor after the engine has run. Never remove a hot cooling-system cap.
The FTC Buyers Guide identifies oil leakage beyond normal seepage and cooling-system leakage as example defects. Ask the mechanic to identify the source and distinguish an active leak from old residue. A seller who recently washed the engine bay may have made visual screening more difficult; a lift inspection and a clean, dry recheck are appropriate.
Inspect the underside and driveline
Subaru’s certification checklist includes undercarriage damage, fluid leaks, axle seals, CV boots, steering linkage, struts, and related components. Look for torn boots, grease flung around a wheel, a damaged shield, wet axle or differential seals, bent linkage, or a strut that is visibly wet. These signs do not establish the repair cost by themselves; the mechanic should identify the source, safety impact, and urgency.

| Observation | Why it matters | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Fresh drops after parking | Suggests an active leak, though the source may be above the drip | Have a shop trace it on a lift |
| Dry film or old stain | May be historic residue or minor seepage | Ask whether it is presently wet and whether the level is changing |
| Coolant crust, wet hose, or low reservoir | Can indicate a cooling-system leak and overheating risk | Do not rely on a short drive; obtain a cooling-system inspection |
| Grease around a torn CV boot | Indicates loss of lubricant and possible joint damage | Request a driveline repair estimate |
Use the interior and cold start as evidence
Watch the warning-light sequence
When the ignition is switched on before starting, many warning lamps should illuminate briefly and then go out after the engine starts. A lamp that never appears, remains on, or returns during the drive needs diagnosis. Record the exact symbol and photograph it if the seller permits. Do not accept a cleared-code demonstration as proof that the fault is repaired.
Listen, smell, and observe controls
During a cold start, note extended cranking, smoke, unusual tapping, knocking, belt noise, exhaust odor, fuel smell, or a strong coolant smell. Check that the steering, brakes, windows, climate controls, lights, and wipers operate. These checks do not replace a mechanical inspection; they tell you what to report and test further.
Review records and conduct a meaningful road test
Consumer.gov recommends reviewing service records and test-driving the vehicle. Look for consistent mileage, regular oil and fluid service, documented brake and tire work, timing-related maintenance where applicable to the specific engine, and explanations for gaps. Do not infer that a missing receipt proves work was not done, but do ask the seller to reconcile conflicting dates or mileage.
Drive on roads that resemble your normal use, while obeying traffic laws. Check straight-line tracking, steering effort, brake feel, vibration, suspension noises over uneven pavement, transmission operation, temperature stability, and the return of warning lamps. Test the car both cold and fully warmed if the seller and mechanic permit it. A brief drive that feels normal cannot rule out hidden structural corrosion, an intermittent fault, or a leak that appears only under load.

Choose the inspector, not the seller
Use an independent mechanic or qualified mobile inspection service that you select. Ask for an inspection on a lift where appropriate, a road test, a scan of available modules, and a written report. A dealer’s internal inspection or certification can be useful information, but it does not remove your need for an independent opinion.

Request that the report identify the vehicle’s make, model, and VIN and separate safety issues, immediate repairs, deferred maintenance, and items that need monitoring. Ask for photographs or measurements where useful and repair-cost estimates for each significant finding. A written estimate gives you a factual basis for deciding whether the asking price still makes sense.

The mechanic should evaluate structure and corrosion, accident-repair evidence, leaks and fluid levels, cooling-system condition, brakes, tires, suspension, steering, driveline, exhaust, electrical systems, warning codes, and signs of flood or water intrusion. The exact scope depends on the vehicle and the shop; ask what is excluded.
Know when to walk away from the appointment
If the seller refuses to let you obtain an independent inspection, the FTC advises considering another seller. Treat that refusal as a transaction risk even if the car looks clean. You can also pause when the seller will not provide the VIN, blocks access to records, insists on a hot engine only, or will not permit the vehicle to be moved to a safe inspection location.
How Toyota and Subaru certification checklists help
Manufacturer checklists are useful prompts, not guarantees for a particular used car. The Toyota checklist referenced here dates from 2019, and the Subaru 152-point form identifies a 2014 update. They may not describe current certification rules for every model, dealer, or market.
The Subaru form is valuable because it explicitly calls out door-jamb and rocker-panel rust, undercarriage damage, fluid leaks, axle seals, CV boots, steering linkage, struts, and diagnostic trouble-code checks. Use those categories to question an inspector, while recognizing that a consumer scan is not the same as the manufacturer’s Select Monitor. Toyota and Subaru certification status should never be used to waive a physical inspection or to promise that a car has never been damaged.
Compare candidate cars by risk and total cost
There is no sound Toyota-versus-Subaru reliability ranking that applies to every model year, climate, owner, and maintenance history. Compare the individual vehicles using the same evidence:
| Decision axis | Questions to answer |
|---|---|
| Structure and corrosion | Is there rust-through, a suspicious weld, frame or underbody damage, or a mechanic’s concern about crash protection? |
| Leak severity | Is the leak active, has its source been identified, and what is the written repair estimate? |
| Documented history | Do the VIN, title, history report, service records, mileage, and seller’s explanation agree? |
| Recall status | Are VIN-specific safety recalls open, and is there a documented plan for the remedy? |
| Total purchase cost | What will the car cost after urgent repairs, deferred maintenance, inspection fees, taxes, and registration? |
| Seller cooperation | Will the seller permit a cold start, road test, records review, and independent written inspection? |
Decision rules for common findings
Pause immediately for structural concerns
Serious rust-through, frame cracks, corrective welds, a bent or twisted structure, substantial underbody damage, or an unexplained VIN discrepancy require professional resolution before you negotiate or pay. A low price does not make an uncertain structure safe.
Separate repairable defects from unknown risk
An identified, priced repair is different from an active leak whose source cannot be found or corrosion hidden under coatings. Ask the mechanic whether the defect affects safety, whether it is urgent, and whether additional damage is likely once the area is opened. Use the written estimate and the seller’s response, not a guess based on the vehicle’s badge.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Walk away when the evidence cannot be verified
Consider another car when the seller refuses an independent inspection, will not provide a VIN, gives contradictory history, or pressures you to skip the road test or records review. This is practical risk guidance rather than a universal legal rule, but unresolved uncertainty is a valid reason not to buy.
Quick Recap
A compact inspection-day checklist
- Match the VIN on paperwork with visible vehicle locations and stop if the identities do not reconcile.
- Read the history report and compare title, mileage, ownership, loss, and repair information with the seller’s records.
- Run the VIN or plate through NHTSA’s recall lookup and record any open campaign.
- Read the dealer Buyers Guide and get every promise in writing.
- View the car cold, clean, dry, and in daylight; compare gaps, paint, trim, and lamps.
- Inspect door jambs, rocker panels, wheel openings, floors, cargo areas, and accessible structure for corrosion or water intrusion.
- Look for frame cracks, corrective welds, rust-through, bent rails, or dog-tracking indications without going under an unsupported vehicle.
- Check the parking surface, engine bay, cooling system, axle areas, CV boots, steering, struts, and other accessible underbody components for active leaks or damage.
- Start the engine, observe warning lamps, listen and smell for abnormalities, and test controls.
- Road-test under normal conditions and record steering, braking, vibration, noises, temperature, and warning lights.
- Have your chosen mechanic perform a lift inspection and provide a written report with repair estimates.
- Recalculate the total cost and proceed only when the vehicle’s condition, history, recall status, and seller’s paperwork make sense together.
