1. Prepare before you meet the seller
Good inspection starts before you see the SUV. Ask the seller for enough information to verify identity, history and feasibility of a professional inspection.

- Vehicle identification number (VIN), model year, trim and current odometer reading.
- Title status and the location of the title or registration documents.
- Maintenance and repair records, including receipts when available.
- Confirmation that you may arrange an independent pre-purchase inspection.
- Permission for a legal, safe test drive with the vehicle fully warmed up.
A seller who will not provide the VIN or refuses an independent inspection has created a risk you cannot resolve with a visual walk-around.

Run VIN-specific recall and campaign checks
Use Toyota’s Safety Recalls & Service Campaigns portal with the vehicle’s VIN. Check the same VIN through the NHTSA recall lookup. These tools identify applicable open recalls or campaigns; they do not replace a complete vehicle-history report, title search or mechanical inspection. A result can change as records are updated, so save the result date and ask how any open item will be completed.
Do not treat a recall as closed merely because the seller says it was repaired. Ask for documentation or have a Toyota dealer verify completion. Resolve an open safety recall with the seller or dealer before you regard it as settled.
Find the correct manuals and maintenance schedule
Use Toyota’s year-specific owner portal, not a generic internet schedule. For example, Toyota provides documentation for the 2003 Land Cruiser and for the 2009 Land Cruiser, including an owner’s manual and scheduled-maintenance guide. Select the exact model year and, where applicable, the vehicle’s market. Controls, equipment and service intervals from another year or country may not apply.
2. Confirm the vehicle’s identity and paperwork
Before evaluating condition, make sure you are inspecting the same vehicle described in the documents.
Match every VIN location
- Compare the VIN on the dashboard plate with the title, registration and insurance paperwork.
- Check the door-jamb label and any other manufacturer VIN label that is visible without removing trim.
- Look for altered, damaged or missing labels, mismatched characters or paperwork that describes a different trim or model year.
- Stop the transaction until every discrepancy is explained and corrected through the appropriate authority.
A VIN mismatch is an identity problem, not a minor paperwork detail. Do not rely on a seller’s verbal explanation when the physical vehicle and legal documents disagree.
3. Inspect the exterior and underbody
Perform the walk-around in daylight on a clean, level surface. Toyota’s 2015 and 2017 pre-delivery check sheets specifically include damage and rust checks, including an under-vehicle inspection in the 2015 sheet and exterior damage/rust checks in the 2017 sheet. They do not establish a universal acceptable rust limit for a used Land Cruiser.
Body, glass and paint
- View each panel from several angles for ripples, dents, paint overspray, uneven gaps and color differences that may indicate collision repair.
- Inspect the roof, pillars, rocker panels, tailgate and door bottoms, where damage or corrosion can be missed during a quick walk-around.
- Check the windshield and other glass for cracks, chips, delamination and evidence that a panel was replaced incorrectly.
- Look at lamps, lenses, bezels, bumpers, grille and mirrors for cracks, loose mounts or mismatched aging.
- Open and close every door, hood and tailgate. They should latch securely without excessive force or unusual movement.
Rust and structural areas
Examine wheel arches, frame rails, suspension mounting areas, crossmembers, body mounts, brake and fuel lines, and seams where dirt and moisture collect. Surface discoloration is not automatically structural failure, while deep scaling, perforation, distorted metal or corrosion around suspension and body mounts can materially affect safety and repair cost. The official check sheets prompt you to look for damage and rust but do not define a threshold; have a mechanic determine whether corrosion is cosmetic, repairable or structurally significant.

- Record the brand, size and apparent age of each tire and compare tread wear across the tire and axle.
- Look for cupping, feathering, one-sided wear, bulges and sidewall damage.
- Inspect wheels for cracks, bends, severe curb damage and missing fasteners.
- Uneven wear can point to alignment, suspension, bearing or accident issues; it is a reason for diagnosis, not proof of one specific fault.
Underbody inspection
Never crawl under an unsupported vehicle. Use a lift or approved ramps through the inspecting shop. Ask the mechanic to look for impact damage, leaking fluids, bent components, loose shields, damaged exhaust parts, torn boots, deteriorated bushings and corrosion affecting structural or safety-related parts. A clean-looking engine bay does not substitute for an underside inspection.

4. Check the cabin and every electrical function
Perform these checks with the vehicle parked safely and the engine started as appropriate. Toyota’s check sheets include warning lights, gauges, horn, wipers, lights, mirrors and fitted equipment; treat those entries as prompts rather than a complete used-car diagnostic.
Warning lights, gauges and controls
- Observe the instrument panel during key-on and startup. Warning lamps should illuminate for the normal self-check and then go out as specified in the owner’s manual.
- Confirm that speedometer, tachometer, fuel, temperature and other fitted gauges respond plausibly.
- Test the horn, windshield wipers, washers, headlights, high beams, turn signals, hazard flashers and brake lights.
- Operate all mirrors, windows, locks, seat adjustments, sunroof and tailgate functions that the vehicle has.
- Test heating, ventilation, air conditioning, defrost and fan-speed settings. Check for unusual smells, weak airflow or temperature that does not change as selected.
- Check the audio, navigation, camera, parking sensors and other installed equipment without assuming that an option listed in an advertisement is actually present or functional.
Record each failed function. A single inoperative switch may be inexpensive or may indicate wiring, module or water-intrusion damage; only diagnosis can distinguish them.
Interior condition and water evidence
Inspect carpets, seat mounts, cargo-area trim, spare-wheel wells and the underside of floor mats for dampness, staining, mold odor or corrosion. Compare wear on the steering wheel, pedals, driver’s seat and switches with the claimed mileage. Wear is not a mileage proof, but a major mismatch deserves an explanation and documentation.

5. Conduct a careful test drive
Drive only with the owner’s permission and where legal and safe. Use a route that includes low-speed maneuvering, ordinary roads and a safe opportunity to observe braking and temperature behavior. Do not perform aggressive driving to provoke a fault.
What to observe
- Steering should respond predictably without excessive free play, pulling or persistent vibration.
- Braking should be straight and controlled, without grinding, pulsation or a pedal that sinks unexpectedly.
- Listen for abnormal knocks, humming, clicking, whining or exhaust noises over smooth and uneven pavement.
- Observe transmission engagement, shift quality and any delay, flare or harshness; do not diagnose a specific component from a symptom alone.
- Watch temperature and warning indications throughout the drive. Stop safely if a warning lamp, overheating indication, smoke or serious noise appears.
- After the drive, look for fresh fluid leaks and note smells from coolant, oil, fuel or overheated brakes.
The cited Toyota check sheets are not model-specific road-test diagnostics. Any concern you identify should be written down for the independent mechanic rather than dismissed because the vehicle still moves.
6. Hire an independent mechanic before buying
An independent pre-purchase inspection is the step that converts a buyer’s observations into a professional assessment of the actual Land Cruiser. Choose a qualified shop that is not financially dependent on the seller. A Toyota specialist can be useful, but independence from the transaction matters most.
Give the shop a clear scope
- Request a lift inspection of the frame, underbody, suspension, steering, brakes, driveline, exhaust and fluid leaks.

Questions the records should answer
- Are oil, filter, brake and other routine services documented at reasonable intervals for this vehicle?
- Are major fluid services and inspections recorded when the year-specific guide calls for them?
- Do invoices identify the VIN, mileage and work performed?
- Are repeated repairs, warning lights or unresolved recommendations visible in the history?
- Does the paperwork support the displayed mileage and ownership timeline?
Toyota’s manuals and maintenance guides show what the manufacturer schedules; they do not prove that an individual Land Cruiser received that work. Missing records are uncertainty, not evidence that service was completed.
8. Compare candidate Land Cruisers on condition, not mileage alone

Proceed when the evidence is coherent
Proceed toward purchase when the VIN and paperwork agree, recall status is understood, corrosion and damage are acceptable to the mechanic, major functions work, and documented or budgeted maintenance fits your plans. Put any promises about repairs or recall completion in writing before closing.
Renegotiate only with documented repairs
Use the mechanic’s written findings and local repair estimates to negotiate. Separate safety-critical work from deferred cosmetic items. Do not subtract an arbitrary amount for a symptom that has not been diagnosed.
Walk away when risk cannot be verified
- The seller will not provide the VIN, title information or inspection access.
- VIN characters do not match across the vehicle and paperwork.
- Structural corrosion, severe impact damage or unsafe braking/steering is found.
- Warning lights are suppressed, unexplained or return during the drive.

Is a clean recall result proof that the Land Cruiser is safe?
