Treat that walk-around and drive as a way to find questions, not as proof that the vehicle is mechanically sound. For hidden structural, electronic or internal-engine condition, make the purchase conditional on an inspection by a qualified technician—ideally one familiar with Mahindra vehicles.
The steps below follow the checks described in Mahindra’s XUV700 Owner’s Manual (issued January 2023, revised February 2025) and Mahindra Auto’s Care and Maintenance guidance. Equipment differs by year and trim, so never assume that an advertised feature is fitted to the particular XUV700 you are viewing.

1. Prepare before you meet the seller
Ask for enough information to identify the individual car, not just the model name. Request the registration details, vehicle identification number (VIN), model year, exact variant, engine and fuel type, transmission, seating configuration and the available service paperwork. Write these details down before the appointment and take the records with you.

- Compare the VIN shown on the vehicle with the VIN on the registration and service documents. Mahindra describes VIN plates as legal identification references; a plate or number that appears altered is a reason to stop and investigate rather than proceed.
- Check that the stated year, variant, powertrain, transmission and seat count match the vehicle you can see. An online advertisement can contain the wrong trim or a mixture of photographs from another car.
- Use Mahindra’s official owner-manual repository and the manual for the relevant year to identify the controls and warning symbols that should apply to that vehicle.
Registration transfer, finance or lien checks, insurance history and other legal requirements depend on your jurisdiction. They are separate from the physical inspection and must be verified through the appropriate local authority or provider.

Request dated maintenance evidence
Mahindra’s manual tells owners to record the service date and mileage and retain maintenance documentation. Ask for invoices, job cards and inspection sheets in date-and-mileage order. Note what work was performed, not merely the date stamp. Compare the latest recorded mileage with the odometer and with wear on the steering wheel, pedals, driver’s seat and tires.
- A complete-looking sequence with mileage that rises consistently is useful evidence, but it does not prove that every repair was done correctly.
- Missing entries are uncertainty, not proof of neglect. Ask the seller to explain gaps and seek independent confirmation where possible.
- An unexplained mileage jump, a document that names a different VIN, or an odometer reading that conflicts with the car’s visible wear should be resolved before you negotiate or pay a deposit.
The documents supplied with a car do not by themselves establish that an odometer has not been tampered with. A technician can look for additional evidence when the records and condition do not agree.
2. Screen the exterior and underside
View the XUV700 in consistent daylight, with the body clean enough to see its surfaces. Walk around it slowly before operating any controls. A visual inspection can identify clues; it cannot determine whether a vehicle has suffered a serious collision or whether a repair is structurally sound.
Look for body and repair clues
- Sight along each panel for dents, ripples, uneven panel gaps, overspray or a paint shade that changes from one panel to the next.
- Inspect the bumpers, doors, bonnet, tailgate, roof and lower sills for repaired areas, corrosion, deep scratches or cracked plastic. Mahindra’s general guidance specifically calls for checking body damage and deep scratches.
- Open and close every door and the tailgate. They should latch without lifting, forcing or unusual noise. Check the bonnet release and hinges, and look for damaged seals or evidence that water has entered.
- Inspect the windscreen and other glass for chips, cracks and clouding. Check mirror housings and lamp lenses for cracks or moisture.
Do not label a panel “safe” or “accident-free” from appearance alone. If paint, gaps or metalwork raise a question, have a qualified inspector examine the structure and repair quality.
Check tires, wheels and visible underbody areas
- Examine all four tires, including the spare if fitted, for cuts, bulges, exposed cords, cracking and uneven tread wear. Uneven wear can point to alignment, suspension or tire-pressure problems.
- Check the tire pressures against the values specified for that vehicle; do not substitute a guessed number. Mahindra’s ownership guidance includes both tire condition and pressure.
- Look at the wheels for bends, cracks or fresh impact marks. A missing or damaged valve cap is minor by itself, but several impact clues deserve a closer inspection.
- With the vehicle parked safely, look beneath the engine, transmission and cooling areas for fresh oil, coolant or other fluid traces. A dry surface does not prove that no leak exists, while a wet or stained area requires diagnosis.
Use a light if necessary, but do not crawl under a vehicle that is supported only by a jack. Leave any underside examination that requires lifting to a properly equipped workshop.

Operate the exterior equipment
Switch on the lamps and indicators, then inspect the beams and lenses. Test the horn, mirrors, wipers and washers. Check that the wiper blades clear the glass rather than smearing it, and look for washer-fluid spray at each nozzle. Confirm that doors, locks, the tailgate and the fuel-filler door operate from their normal switches and handles.
3. Inspect the cabin, restraint system and fitted equipment
Enter the vehicle with the engine off and check the cabin methodically. Equipment differs by variant, so operate what is actually fitted instead of assuming that every XUV700 has the same screen, seat adjustment or driver-assistance controls.
Seat belts and seats
- Pull each seat belt out through its full usable length. Look for cuts, fraying, pulled stitching, burns, contamination or a belt that does not retract smoothly.
- Insert each buckle and confirm that it latches and releases normally. A buckle that feels loose, fails to latch or releases without its button being pressed needs professional attention.
- Check the belt anchors, seat rails and visible seat mounts for looseness or damage. Do not remove trim during a casual viewing; a technician should investigate suspected crash damage.
- Operate the driver and passenger seat adjustments and check for abnormal movement or a seat that will not lock in position.
Mahindra’s manual calls for periodic inspection of seat belts and immediate replacement of damaged parts. A belt that looks acceptable can still have a hidden pretensioner or anchor problem after a collision, so mention any crash history to the inspector.
Controls and comfort systems
With the ignition on, test the windows, central locking, mirrors, interior lights, climate controls, demister, infotainment, cameras and any other functions installed in that trim. Confirm that the display starts normally and that touch inputs, physical buttons and steering-wheel controls respond. Try the air-conditioning in both cooling and heating modes when conditions permit. Note intermittent operation, flickering screens, non-working speakers, unusual fan noise or a battery warning after repeated starts.
Compare the equipment with the exact variant information rather than treating a missing feature as a fault. Mahindra cautions that the manual can describe equipment not installed in every vehicle and directs owners to the official variant information or an authorized dealer for feature applicability.

Match the cabin condition to the records
Compare the odometer with the driver’s seat bolster, pedal faces, steering-wheel rim, switch markings and floor mats. These observations are clues only; they are not a mileage test. Record discrepancies and ask the seller to explain them before moving on.

4. Make a safe under-hood check
Only inspect the engine compartment with the vehicle parked securely, the engine switched off and hot components allowed to cool. Mahindra’s self-maintenance precautions include securing the vehicle, staying clear of hot parts, avoiding contact with fluids and not attempting unsafe repairs during a viewing.
What to look for
- Check visible engine-oil, coolant, brake or clutch fluid and washer-fluid levels against their marked ranges where the reservoirs and dipsticks are accessible.
- Look for fresh wetness, dried residue or staining around the engine, radiator, hoses, pipes, fluid reservoirs and joints. The manual’s maintenance list specifically includes leaks, hoses, joints and pipes.
- Inspect hoses and wiring for splits, swelling, abrasion, loose connections or makeshift repairs. Do not pull on connectors or disturb covers to reach components.
- Look at the battery case and terminals for swelling, corrosion or loose connections. A battery that has recently been replaced is not itself a fault, but ask when and why it was changed.
Never remove a radiator or coolant cap while the system may be hot or pressurized. Do not top up unknown fluids or attempt repairs at the seller’s location. Photograph a suspicious leak and have a qualified technician identify the fluid and source.
5. Observe start-up and warning lamps
Ask the seller to leave the car cold, if practical, so you can observe the first start. Sit where you can see the complete instrument display. Switch the ignition on and watch the warning lamps and driver-information display before starting; then note which lamps go out after the engine runs and which remain on or return.
The XUV700 manual contains the warning-lamp and driver-information-display descriptions for the model. Use the manual for the exact year and variant to interpret an alert, because equipment and symbols can differ. A persistent or unexplained warning is a reason to pause the purchase and obtain a diagnostic inspection, not a reason to clear the lamp and continue.

- Ask whether any warning has been recently reset, and request the diagnostic report if the seller claims a repair was completed.
- Check that the display does not show a message that disappears immediately after start-up without an explanation.
- Do not accept a promise that a lamp is “just a sensor” without a qualified diagnosis.
Mahindra’s manual foreword states: “If you have any doubt whatsoever regarding the use or care of your vehicle, please visit your Authorised Mahindra Dealer for assistance or advice.” That is practical guidance when a warning, leak or operating symptom cannot be explained at the viewing.
6. Take a cautious, legal screening drive
Drive only if the vehicle is legally registered and insured for the journey, the seller permits it and you are satisfied that it is safe to move. Choose a familiar route that includes smooth streets, a controlled stop and, where legal and safe, a short higher-speed section. Do not use traffic or pedestrians as test obstacles.
Checks during the drive
- Listen for knocks, rattles, grinding, squeals or a change in engine noise during acceleration, turning and braking.
- Feel for unusual vibration through the steering wheel, seat or pedals. Note whether it changes with speed, braking or road surface.
- Check that the engine responds consistently and that the transmission engages and shifts without unexplained delay, harshness or slipping.
- On a safe, straight section, confirm that the vehicle tracks normally without persistent pulling. Apply the brakes progressively and note judder, noise, a soft pedal or a tendency to pull.
- Watch the instrument display while driving for warning lamps or messages that reappear.
- After parking, listen for cooling-system or belt noise and look again for fresh fluid traces. Smell for fuel, coolant, burning material or exhaust entering the cabin.
Mahindra advises investigating unusual noise, smell, vibration or fluid leakage through an authorized dealer or qualified workshop. A quiet, smooth drive is encouraging but cannot rule out faults that appear only when the vehicle is lifted, scanned or dismantled.

The XUV700 manual discusses features including Adaptive Cruise Control, collision mitigation with automatic emergency braking and forward-collision warning, High Beam Assist, Traffic Sign Recognition, Lane Keep Assist and Smart Pilot Assist. It also warns that the manual may explain equipment not installed in a particular vehicle.

- Match the vehicle’s switches, menu entries, sensors and camera hardware with the exact variant information or an authorized dealer’s confirmation.
- Inspect the windscreen and front and rear sensor areas for cracks, stickers, paint, dirt or signs of replacement. These observations do not prove calibration status.
- Ask for invoices or calibration records after windscreen, bumper, grille or collision repairs. A sensor can be physically present yet misaligned.
Do not deliberately trigger automatic braking, lane intervention or other active-safety functions in traffic. If an ADAS warning appears, a feature is unavailable when the controls indicate it should be present, or the vehicle has had front-end or windscreen damage, have the system assessed with suitable diagnostic equipment by a qualified technician.

8. Decide when a professional inspection is essential
Arrange an independent inspection before committing to the purchase whenever the history is incomplete or any expensive-to-assess system is uncertain. Mahindra recommends service through an authorized center or qualified technician. Ask a center whether it offers a buyer’s inspection, but do not assume that every authorized center provides a standardized pre-purchase package.
Escalate immediately when you find
- VIN, registration or service records that do not match.
- Unexplained mileage inconsistencies or a gap in records that the seller cannot account for.
- Uneven panel gaps, mismatched paint, bent structural areas or signs of flood or water exposure.
- Persistent warning lamps, unexplained electrical faults or a missing safety feature that the trim should have.
- Fluid leaks, overheating signs, abnormal smoke, harsh transmission behavior, steering or braking problems, or repeated noise and vibration.
- Seat-belt damage or evidence that restraint components have been replaced after a collision.
Tell the inspector what you observed and provide the records. Request checks appropriate to the symptoms, including a scan of electronic systems and an examination of the underbody and structure when indicated. The aim is to establish condition on this individual vehicle, not to apply a generic defect list.
9. Use a four-part decision record
Write your findings down rather than relying on memory. The following framework separates evidence from assumptions:

There are no evidence-based numeric pass/fail limits or repair-cost figures in the manufacturer material used for this checklist. Do not invent a price threshold from a visual impression. If the seller will not allow records to be checked or an independent inspection, treat that refusal as a purchase risk and be prepared to walk away.
10. Keep the inspection in perspective
Mahindra’s documents provide maintenance and operating guidance for the XUV700; they do not establish a model-wide failure-rate study, a universal used-car inspection standard, an individual vehicle diagnosis, or a guaranteed recall or repair history. Any recall or campaign question must be checked for the specific VIN, model year and market through current official channels.
Your walk-around can uncover inconsistencies early and make a professional inspection more efficient. It cannot certify the vehicle’s structure, airbag or restraint history, electronic calibration, internal engine condition or long-term reliability. The safest purchase decision combines matching identity and records, a careful physical and operating screen, and a qualified technician’s written assessment before money changes hands.
