Ask for a dated, written battery-health report before you agree to buy a used electric car. Check who produced it, what data and test procedure it used, and whether the result is a manufacturer measurement or an independent assessment. Then verify the exact vehicle’s battery warranty, service and repair history, charging equipment, warning status and real-world range. A battery-health percentage is useful evidence, not a universal pass/fail grade.
What battery health means on a used EV
Battery health is usually expressed as state of health (SoH): the vehicle’s current or estimated energy capacity compared with the capacity when the battery was new. A reading of 90% generally means the test estimates roughly 90% of the original capacity remains, but the number is meaningful only alongside the method, vehicle software, temperature, battery state and the battery’s warranty terms.

SoH does not prove that every cell is balanced, that the pack has no stored fault codes, or that the car will deliver its dashboard range in every season. Range changes with weather, speed, terrain, traffic, driving style, tires and vehicle configuration. A healthy-looking percentage also cannot guarantee that a warranty claim will be accepted; manufacturers apply their own thresholds, exclusions and diagnostic procedures.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThere is no evidence-based SoH percentage that is automatically “good” for every used EV. A result should be judged against the specific model’s original capacity, age, mileage, remaining warranty, expected driving range and repair history.

How do I check the battery health of a used electric car?
1. Request the report before you view the car
Ask the seller or dealer for:
- A written battery-health or capacity report.
- The date and mileage when it was produced.
- The company, workshop or technician that performed it.
- The exact measure reported (SoH, usable capacity, cell-balance result or another metric).
- The test conditions, software version or diagnostic equipment used, if stated.
Australian Government buyer guidance recommends asking for a battery-health report and defines SoH against the battery’s original condition. It also notes that an independent check may be preferable to an unsupported seller statement. A report supplied only as a verbal percentage, with no date or method, is weak evidence.
2. Establish who tested it and how
Independent battery services normally connect to the car’s communications system, retrieve battery-management data and process it into a capacity report. DEKRA describes an OBD-cable vehicle interface followed by a capacity report, while TÜV Rheinland describes qualified garage personnel reading vehicle data through an OBD2 interface and turning it into an independent report.
Those procedures do not mean that every consumer OBD2 reader can calculate capacity reliably. Ask whether the tool supports the exact make, model, model year and battery version. Also ask whether the report is a direct manufacturer test, an estimate derived from diagnostic data, or a mixture of measurements and algorithms.
3. Check the vehicle for warnings and battery faults
Request the diagnostic-code history, not just a current dashboard screenshot. Ask specifically about high-voltage battery, isolation, charging, thermal-management and propulsion warnings. Find out whether warning lights were recently cleared, whether the battery has been opened, and whether individual cells, modules or the complete pack were repaired or replaced.
An unusually low reading, a result that conflicts with the car’s observed behavior, or a report that omits fault information deserves a second assessment before you pay a deposit.

4. Compare the report with range you actually need
Use the battery’s estimated usable capacity and the car’s normal consumption to judge whether it meets your trips. Do not treat the dashboard range estimate as a controlled capacity test: it is an estimate that responds to recent driving and operating conditions. A car with less capacity can still be suitable if its dependable winter or motorway range covers your use; a higher SoH car may not if its charging speed, connector or route coverage does not.
What is a good battery-health percentage for a used EV?
Do not use a single cutoff for every model. The same percentage can represent different remaining kilowatt-hours in different battery packs, and a manufacturer may define warranty protection using a model-specific capacity threshold or a defect standard rather than a generic SoH number.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Evidence | What it can tell you | What it cannot establish alone |
|---|---|---|
| SoH percentage | Estimated capacity remaining relative to the original battery | Absence of faults, guaranteed range or warranty eligibility |
| Usable-capacity figure | Energy available for driving under the provider’s stated method | How much energy will be available in every temperature and driving condition |
| Cell-voltage or balance data | Whether the diagnostic snapshot shows an obvious imbalance | Long-term degradation or hidden faults without a qualified interpretation |
| Dashboard range | Context about recent consumption and the car’s estimate | A repeatable laboratory-style capacity measurement |
| Warranty status | Contractual protection that may remain for the battery | That the pack currently meets every warranty condition |
Look for a result that is plausible for the car’s age and use, consistent with its range and free of unexplained warnings. If two cars are close in price, prefer the one with a dated, independently produced report and clear records over one with a higher unsupported percentage.
Can I check EV battery health with an OBD2 scanner?
Sometimes, but a generic code reader is not a definitive battery-capacity tester. OBD2 is an interface standard; the data exposed, manufacturer permissions and software calculations vary by vehicle. A basic reader may retrieve fault codes while not accessing battery-management values at all.
Before buying or borrowing a scanner, confirm:
- Exact make, model, model year and battery-pack compatibility.
- Whether it reads high-voltage battery data rather than only generic engine-style codes.
- Which values it reports: SoH estimate, available energy, cell voltages, temperatures, charge history or only faults.
- Whether the provider explains its calculation and known limitations.
- Whether using the device could alter settings or clear evidence of previous faults.
A professional report and a consumer scan are not equivalent. DEKRA and TÜV Rheinland describe service workflows in which vehicle data is collected and interpreted for a capacity report. Use a consumer tool as supporting evidence unless its exact compatibility and calculation are documented, and have a qualified EV technician investigate any worrying result.

Manufacturer displays, apps and built-in tests
On-screen or app health information
Some EVs expose battery information through the instrument display, a vehicle app or a service menu. The feature, calculation and availability depend on the model and software. Treat it as useful vehicle-system data, then ask how the value was calculated and when it was last updated.
The Model X owner manual, for example, says its battery-health evaluation uses battery-management-system data and compares it with expected energy retention for the battery type, age and usage. That description is specific to that vehicle’s system; it is not a universal procedure for other EVs.
Manufacturer-specific capacity tests
Some vehicles can run a controlled battery test, but prerequisites and duration matter. The Model X manual describes an optional Battery Health Test requiring an AC charger rated at least 5 kW, a battery level below 20% before starting and no relevant active alerts. It can take up to 24 hours. Follow the exact manual for the car you are buying; do not apply those requirements to another make or model.
Ask the seller to provide the completed result rather than starting an unfamiliar test yourself during a short viewing. A test that is interrupted, run with active warnings or performed under different conditions may not be comparable.
Independent battery reports: when they are worth paying for
An independent assessment is most valuable when the seller cannot provide a dated report, the car is near the end of its battery warranty, the asking price assumes unusually strong battery condition, or the vehicle has warning history, accident damage or inconsistent range.

| Provider-described approach | Published timing | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| DEKRA battery test | 15 minutes | Provider-stated duration for its battery-test service; availability and supported vehicles vary. |
| TÜV Rheinland battery quick check | Approximately 60 minutes of data readout | Described as a qualified-garage process; the cited release concerned a planned German launch and anticipated rollout, so current local availability must be confirmed. |
Ask the assessor what the service covers, whether it reports usable capacity or only a score, and whether it checks fault codes and cell data. Confirm the VIN on the report and keep the document with the purchase records.
How much battery warranty is left on a used electric car?
Verify it by VIN and original in-service date with the manufacturer or an authorized service center. Ask for the end date, mileage limit, capacity threshold, covered components, exclusions, servicing requirements and transfer rules. The vehicle’s registration date may differ from its original in-service date, so do not calculate remaining coverage from registration alone.
Australian Government guidance says battery warranties commonly run for eight years or 160,000 km, but that is a description of common terms, not a universal guarantee. BMW of North America describes an eight-year/100,000-mile defect warranty for the covered high-voltage battery assembly on specified vehicles, measured from the vehicle’s in-service date, with separate capacity terms for specified model years. A different market, model year or battery may have different conditions.
Obtain the warranty statement in writing. Check whether coverage transfers automatically to the next owner, whether a dealer-only inspection is required, and whether replacement is triggered by a capacity threshold, a defect diagnosis or both.

Charging inlet, cable and charging test
Inspect the inlet for bent pins, corrosion, debris, heat discoloration or a loose locking mechanism. Check the included portable or AC cable for cuts, crushed sections, damaged plugs and missing adapters. Confirm that the connector matches your intended home and public chargers.
If the seller permits, connect to a compatible charger and verify that the car starts charging, shows a sensible power level and does not stop with an error. A short charging demonstration cannot prove maximum charging speed or battery capacity, but it can reveal an immediate compatibility or hardware problem.
How to compare two used electric cars
Make a side-by-side record rather than choosing on SoH alone. NIST’s November 2025 used-BEV choice research treated mileage, purchase price, refurbishment history, electric range and SoH as vehicle attributes. That supports comparing those dimensions; it is not a universal pricing formula.
| Comparison | Questions to answer |
|---|---|
| Battery evidence | Is the report dated, VIN-matched, independently produced and clear about its method? |
| Warranty | How much time and mileage remain, what threshold applies, and can coverage transfer? |
| Age and mileage | How do calendar age, odometer reading and prior use fit the reported capacity? |
| Repair history | Were modules or the pack repaired or replaced, and is the work documented? |
| Usable range | Will dependable range cover your cold-weather, motorway and daily routes? |
| Charging | Are the inlet, cable and onboard charging hardware compatible and functional? |
| Total price | Does the price account for evidence quality, remaining coverage and possible repair exposure? |
A battery replacement can be a major financial risk. A November 2025 NIST report presented a replacement-cost range of $5,000–$20,000 or more, depending on model and labor costs. It is an illustrative range, not a quote for a particular vehicle. Obtain a model-specific estimate before treating a low-priced EV as a bargain.
Warning signs that should pause the purchase
- The seller refuses to provide any report or will not allow an independent inspection.
- The document has no VIN, date, mileage, provider or explanation of the measurement.
- The reported SoH conflicts sharply with range, charging behavior or service records.
- Battery, charging or propulsion warnings are active or were recently cleared.
- The car has undocumented pack work, flood exposure or underbody impact.
- The warranty answer is verbal, based on a different market or model, or unclear about transfer.
- The charging inlet or included cable is damaged, incompatible or untested.
In these cases, make the sale conditional on a satisfactory independent inspection, renegotiate to reflect documented risk, or walk away.
A practical pre-purchase checklist
- Before the viewing, request the dated battery report and warranty details.
- Match the VIN, mileage and vehicle identity on every document.
- Ask who performed the test, which interface and software it used, and what SoH means in that report.
- Review fault codes, warning history, battery repairs, accident records and service invoices.
- Inspect the inlet, cable and underbody; confirm connector compatibility.
- Test charging if permitted and note any errors or abnormal interruption.
- Compare estimated usable range with your actual routes and climate.
- Have an EV-qualified mechanic or independent battery assessor inspect any material uncertainty.
- Confirm remaining warranty coverage, capacity terms and transferability by VIN.
- Compare the evidence, price and repair exposure with at least one alternative vehicle.
What the percentage cannot tell you
SoH is a decision input, not a verdict. It can indicate remaining capacity, but it does not replace a fault scan, warranty verification, charging check or whole-car inspection. Provider methods also differ: a manufacturer’s internal estimate, an independent diagnostic report and a generic scanner may produce numbers that are not directly interchangeable. Preserve the underlying report and method, not just the headline percentage, when deciding whether the car is worth buying.
