Do not rely on a photograph supplied by the seller. Take your own images with the full marking, surrounding panel and date visible. Check that the VIN plate, windscreen marking and stamped or labelled locations appear undisturbed. Refuse a rushed inspection where you cannot see the markings clearly.
Confirm the registered owner and seller’s authority
- Check that the person negotiating the sale is the registered owner or has a documented authority to sell.
- Compare the owner’s identity details with the RC and the seller’s identification.
- Ask why the car is being sold and record the answer, but treat the documents and inspection as the evidence.
- For a company, leased or financed car, obtain the authorised signatory’s documents and the release paperwork required for transfer.
Use the applicable government and insurer channels to verify the RC, insurance validity, pollution-under-control (PUC) status, outstanding challans and any pending hypothecation or loan. A loan must be closed and the lender’s release documented before you pay the balance. A seller’s promise that the loan will be cleared later is not a substitute for written closure.
Reconcile the odometer with dated records
Write down the displayed mileage before the inspection. Compare it with every dated service entry, repair invoice, inspection record and tyre replacement record. Look for a logical progression: a later invoice should not show fewer kilometres than an earlier one, and the wear on the steering wheel, pedals, driver’s seat and keys should be broadly consistent with the claimed use. These wear clues do not prove fraud by themselves; they tell you when to demand additional records and a technician’s opinion. If the seller cannot explain a gap, stop and obtain independent verification before proceeding.
Demand complete service and accident records
Ask for the complete authorised service printout rather than a handful of recent bills. Audi Approved:plus says it verifies service history before presenting a vehicle, which illustrates the level of documentation you should expect even when buying privately.
- Authorised service history and repair invoices, including dates, mileage and replaced parts.
- Both original keys and evidence of key programming or replacement.
- Tyre replacement records, including the mileage at replacement.
- Written declarations or insurer records for accidents, flood exposure and insurance claims.
- Records of major work, such as engine, turbocharger, gearbox, cooling-system or suspension repairs.
Ask the seller to identify any panel that has been repainted or replaced. A truthful declaration does not make repaired damage harmless, but it lets the technician assess whether the repair was cosmetic or structural.

Check safety campaigns by VIN
Run the VIN through Audi’s campaign checker and obtain written confirmation that any open campaigns have been closed. Save the result with the other purchase documents. Do not assume that a campaign is complete because the seller says the car was serviced; campaign status is a separate verification.
Gate 2: inspect the body, structure and running gear
Prepare the inspection surface and tools
Inspect outside in daylight on a clean, dry, level surface. Dirt and wet panels hide colour differences, scratches and ripples. After the visual inspection, put the car on a lift so you can examine the underside. Bring a torch, a phone camera, a tyre-tread gauge if available, paper towels and a written checklist. A paint-thickness meter can support the inspection, but readings are clues rather than proof; interpret them with panel gaps, fasteners and repair evidence.
Read the panels for previous repairs
Stand several metres away and look along each side of the car. Change your viewing angle to catch waviness in the reflections. Check:
- Uneven gaps between the bonnet, wings, doors, boot and bumpers.
- Colour or gloss differences between adjacent panels.
- Overspray on rubber seals, lamps, badges, wheel-arch liners or plastic trim.
- Sanding marks, ripples, filler edges and inconsistent fasteners.
- Lamps that look newer than their opposite pair or carry different markings.
Open every door, bonnet and the boot. Hinges, bolts and latch areas should not show fresh tool marks or disturbed paint without an explanation. Compare the left and right sides for symmetry. A repainted bumper may be normal cosmetic work; a distorted door aperture or a replaced quarter panel needs a structural assessment.
Inspect the chassis and underbody on a lift
Ask the technician to show you the chassis rails, subframes, floor seams and underbody while the car is raised. Look for bends, crushed members, non-factory welds, stretched seams, heavy underseal applied over repairs, corrosion and flood residue. Audi certification requires no structural misalignment or collision-related structural damage.

Check glass, lamps and warning chimes
Examine the windscreen and other glass for chips, cracks, delamination and signs of leakage. Test headlamps, indicators, brake lights, reverse lights, number-plate lights and hazard flashers. Listen for warning chimes and verify that the instrument display reports faults consistently. Audi’s condition checklist includes glass, lighting and warning functions because failures can be safety issues or evidence of accident repair.
Evaluate wheels and tyres as a set
Record each tyre’s brand, size, DOT date code, tread depth and sidewall condition. Compare wear across both axles and from the inner to outer shoulder. Uneven wear can point to alignment, suspension or accident damage; a single new tyre may indicate a puncture, but a mixed set can also hide a mismatch or unresolved handling problem.
Inspect wheels for bends, cracks, deep kerb damage and different finishes. Confirm that the tyre sizes match the vehicle’s specification and that no warning for tyre-pressure monitoring remains illuminated. Price tyres and wheel repairs separately from normal cosmetic wear.

Before starting, check the oil and coolant levels and look for leaks around the engine, turbocharger plumbing, cooling system, gearbox and steering components. Freshly washed or unusually wet surfaces deserve an explanation because cleaning can hide the source of a leak. Inspect hoses, belts, clamps and wiring for cracking, oil saturation or amateur repairs. Note coolant odour, burnt-oil smell or fluid residue.
Start the car from cold. It should start without prolonged cranking, settle into a stable idle and respond to the accelerator without misfire. Watch for smoke from the exhaust, listen for rattles or knocks and monitor the temperature as the engine warms. Any oil-pressure warning, overheating, persistent smoke, severe rattle or coolant loss ends the road test until a specialist diagnoses it.
Test the cabin, restraints and electronics one function at a time
Switch on the ignition without starting the engine and note the airbag, ABS, engine, brake, oil-pressure and other warning lamps during the self-test. Then start the engine and confirm that the lamps go out as expected. Test each item rather than accepting the seller’s assurance:

Check carpets, the boot floor and spare-wheel or repair-kit area for dampness, staining or corrosion. A musty smell or wet insulation warrants further flood investigation.
Gate 3: perform a diagnostic scan and a proper road test
Interpret the warning-light self-test correctly
With the ignition on, all relevant warning lamps should illuminate briefly for the self-test. After the engine starts, they should go out unless a fault remains. A lamp that never appears can be evidence of tampering; a lamp that stays on requires diagnosis, not a promise that it will clear after servicing.
Use an OBD2 scanner as a screening tool, not a verdict
- Connect an automotive OBD2 scanner before clearing any codes.
- Save the complete report, including stored, pending and readiness information.
- Do not erase codes before the technician has recorded them; clearing can remove useful history.
- Have an Audi-trained technician interpret the results with the car’s service history and physical symptoms.
An inexpensive scanner can identify that a fault exists, but it may not access every Audi control module or explain why a code appeared. Audi India says authorised service uses current diagnostic tools and qualified technicians, so ask for a scan through an authorised facility or a demonstrably competent Audi specialist. A clean generic scan does not cancel evidence of structural damage, overheating, poor maintenance or a manipulated warning lamp.
Drive from cold through different conditions
Plan a route that includes stop-and-go traffic, a clear open section and safe braking. Drive from cold and take notes rather than relying on memory. Check:
- Starting, idle quality and throttle response.
- Turbo response without hesitation, smoke or unusual whine.
- Gearbox engagement from Park or Neutral, smooth shifts and kick-down response.
- Braking effort, straight-line stability, pedal feel and any vibration or pull.
- Steering-centre position, return-to-centre and straight tracking.
- Suspension noise over representative bumps and tyre or wheel bearing noise.
- Air-conditioning performance while stationary and moving.
- Every electrical function that you tested while parked.
Keep the radio off for part of the drive so you can hear knocks, clicks, drivetrain vibration and wind noise. Do not let the seller rush the route or switch off warning lamps before you see the car. Stop immediately for overheating, smoke, an oil-pressure warning, unsafe braking, severe transmission shock or structural noise. Arrange a lift inspection and written repair estimate before any negotiation.

- A seller who will not provide records or allow an independent inspection.
Price documented wear separately from deal-breakers
Tyres, brake wear, cosmetic paint repairs and scheduled maintenance can be priced when the car is otherwise sound. Obtain written parts-and-labour estimates from an Audi-authorised workshop or a demonstrably competent specialist. Ask for the estimated timing as well as the cost: a repair due immediately affects your first-year budget more than one due later.

When comparing two A4s, score them on verified service history and campaign completion, structural and accident evidence, odometer consistency and owner count, engine and gearbox scan results, upcoming maintenance, tyre/brake/suspension condition, warranty or service-plan transferability and total first-year cost. The lower asking price is not the better deal if it transfers hidden structural or drivetrain work to you.
Consider certified stock, but read the terms
If you are buying certified stock instead of a private-sale car, Audi Approved:plus states that vehicles pass a “300+ point inspection” and have their service history verified. The programme page also states that warranty coverage may be up to two years with unlimited kilometres, subject to its terms. Confirm exactly what is covered, the start date, exclusions, transferability and whether the specific A4 qualifies. Certification is an additional layer of documentation; still match the VIN, ownership and loan records yourself.
Protect the payment and sale contract
Do not pay a non-refundable token until the inspection, documents, loan closure and seller identity agree. Put the following in the written sale contract:
- Exact VIN, registration number, displayed odometer and number of keys.
- Seller’s declaration of accident, flood, insurance-claim and ownership history.
- Repairs or accessories included, with who pays for any outstanding work.
- Warranty or service-plan terms and whether they transfer to you.
- Delivery date, payment stages and the condition that title transfers only after required loan release.
- Any agreement that a defect found before delivery permits cancellation or a documented price adjustment.
Keep copies of the signed contract, RC transfer paperwork, insurance documents, PUC, challan and loan-release evidence with the inspection report and scan file. These records give you a defensible trail if a discrepancy appears after purchase.
Final handover checklist
- Photograph and reconcile every VIN with the RC, insurance and invoices.
- Verify seller identity, registered owner, loan status, insurance, PUC and challans.
- Reconcile mileage with dated service, repair and tyre records.
- Obtain service history, both keys, accident/flood declarations and campaign confirmation.
- Complete daylight body and cabin inspection, then a lift inspection.
- Save the diagnostic scan and obtain a technician’s written interpretation.
- Complete a cold-start road test covering gearbox, braking, steering, suspension, climate and electronics.
- Separate acceptable wear from safety or structural defects and obtain written estimates.
