A car show is a useful place to screen a classic car, not to prove that it is sound. Begin with a no-touch walk-around and photographs, then verify the VIN or serial number, title and records before spending time on the shine. Inspect panel gaps, paint, underbody structure, drivetrain, safety equipment and interior details. If the seller allows only a static display, record what you could not test. Before paying a deposit or completing the purchase, make the deal conditional on an independent classic-car inspection with photographs and a written report.
What a show inspection can—and cannot—tell you
Show lighting, polished paint and trophies can make a car look finished while concealing corrosion, old collision repairs, worn mechanical parts or incorrect components. At the event you can gather evidence and decide whether the car deserves a deeper inspection. You usually cannot establish its complete condition without access to a lift, a cold start, a road test and service records.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
Keep three categories in your notes:
- Observed facts: for example, a VIN plate that matches the title, bubbling at the lower door or oil visible on the transmission case.
- Seller statements: such as “numbers matching,” “rust-free” or “recently restored.” Treat each as a claim requiring supporting evidence.
- Not inspected: areas blocked by display stands, components you could not access, and any start, lift or drive the seller did not permit.
Hagerty’s collector-vehicle guidance is blunt: “There’s no substitute for a proper inspection of a car to determine its real condition.” A show visit should therefore lead to a specialist pre-purchase inspection, not replace one.

Prepare before you arrive
Bring a recording kit
- Phone or camera with enough storage for full-car and detail photographs.
- Bright flashlight for the underside, wheel wells, cowl and trunk.
- Strong magnet, wrapped in a thin cloth, for checking suspect steel panels without scratching them.
- Notebook or inspection form for recording facts, seller answers and items not tested.
- Optional paint-thickness gauge, used as a screening aid rather than proof of originality.
Collect the basic facts first
Write down the advertised year, make, model, body style, engine claim, asking price, seller’s name and contact details. Photograph the car before touching it, including all four corners, each side, the roof, the underside where visible, the engine bay, trunk and interior. Ask permission before photographing tags, stampings or personal documents.

Ask what access is available
Before you travel, or as soon as you meet the seller, ask whether the car can be started from cold, driven, placed on a lift and examined later by your own mechanic. A show display may prohibit some of these steps. An honest answer is useful: it tells you how much of the decision must wait for a follow-up appointment.
Verify identity, specification and provenance
Match the VIN or serial number
Locate the vehicle identification number or serial number on the car and photograph it clearly. Compare it character by character with the title, current registration and any prior registrations. Check that the name and address on the title identify the actual seller, and note any alterations, damaged fasteners or signs that a plate has been replaced.
Older vehicles may use a chassis or serial number rather than a modern 17-character VIN. Use the model’s factory or marque-specific references to interpret the format; do not assume that a number that looks plausible proves the claimed year, body style or engine.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Examine trim and cowl tags
Photograph trim tags, cowl tags and other factory identification plates. Decode their date, body, paint, interior and option information with references for that exact model and production period. The tag should be consistent with the VIN, the body configuration and the records. A mismatch is not automatically fraud—parts and bodies can be replaced—but it changes the authenticity question and should be documented before you value the car.
Build a paper trail
Request the title, registrations, service invoices, restoration photographs, receipts, build sheets, ownership history and any factory or marque-registry documentation. Look for a coherent sequence of owners and work rather than a single certificate or trophy. A certificate can support a claim, but it does not establish the car’s current structure, safety or mechanical condition.
Test “numbers matching” as a specific claim
“Numbers matching” should mean that the major components retain the identification numbers expected for that car and specification. Photograph engine and transmission stampings, casting numbers and date codes where accessible. Compare them with model-specific references and the production date shown by the VIN or tags. Ask which components are original, which were replaced, and whether the seller has invoices or photographs documenting the changes.

Do not accept a general statement that the drivetrain is original when only the engine has been checked. A correct-looking casting can still be a replacement, and an original component may have been rebuilt or modified. Record exactly what was verified and what remains unverified.
Inspect the body, paint and concealed rust
Use light and angles to reveal repairs
View every panel in direct light and again from a low angle. Sight along the hood, fenders, doors, quarter panels and trunk lid. Waves, ripples, shrinking paint or a change in reflection can indicate body filler or an uneven repair beneath a glossy finish. Compare color and gloss from panel to panel, including jambs and areas behind weather seals.
Check hood-to-fender, door-to-quarter and trunk gaps along their full length. Consistent gaps are not proof of an untouched body, but a gap that narrows, widens or changes height may indicate collision damage, panel replacement, hinge movement or poor restoration alignment.
Look for paint and masking evidence
- Overspray on rubber seals, chrome, glass edges, wiring or suspension parts.
- Hard paint lines inside door jambs, the trunk or the engine bay that do not match the exterior finish.
- Color differences between adjacent panels or between the outer skin and hidden edges.
- Lifting, cracking, bubbling or blistering paint, especially along seams and lower edges.
These signs tell you that more investigation is needed; they do not by themselves establish whether a repaint was poor or whether the underlying metal is unsafe.
Use a magnet carefully
Run a strong magnet, protected by cloth, over lower quarters, lower doors, rocker areas and other steel panels. A weak or absent attraction can indicate filler, fiberglass or non-steel replacement material. Compare readings with a clearly original steel area on the same car. Aluminum and factory non-steel panels will also behave differently, so confirm the model’s original construction before drawing a conclusion. A magnet cannot find corrosion hidden behind a thin layer of steel or filler; it is a screening tool.
Inspect from below
Use a flashlight to examine frame rails or unibody rails, floor pans, trunk floors, cowl areas, torque boxes and suspension attachment points. Look for perforation, layered metal, fresh welds, distorted rails, mismatched underbody coatings and repairs that stop abruptly at a seam. Pay special attention where water collects: lower fenders, rocker panels, windshield and rear-window channels, wheel wells, cowl drains and trunk corners.

Heavy or freshly applied undercoating concentrated over suspicious areas deserves an explanation. It may be legitimate corrosion protection, but it can also conceal patched metal, incomplete welds or active rust. Ask for restoration photographs taken before the coating was applied and arrange a lift inspection rather than relying on a flashlight view.
Check the chassis, suspension and brakes
Frame and mounting points
On a body-on-frame car, inspect the rails, crossmembers, body mounts and areas around steering and suspension brackets. On a unibody car, inspect the structural rails, rocker sections, torque boxes and factory seams. Look for crushed sections, buckling, elongated mounting holes, non-factory fasteners and welds that differ from the surrounding construction.
Suspension and steering
Check that springs, control arms, shocks, bushings, steering linkage and mounting points appear complete and securely attached. Note leaking dampers, cracked rubber, bent parts, loose hardware or modifications that are not documented. A static show inspection cannot reveal every worn joint; a specialist should check for play with the car safely lifted.

Wheels, tires and brakes
Record tire size, brand, visible cracking, tread condition and the date code on each tire. Old tires can be unsafe even with good tread. Check whether the wheels match the claimed specification and whether the spare is present. Through the wheel openings, look for severely corroded rotors or drums, leaking wheel cylinders, damaged lines and non-standard brake conversions. A road test and lift inspection are required to evaluate braking performance and hydraulic condition.
Evaluate the engine, transmission and other mechanical systems
Engine bay and leaks
Look for oil, coolant, fuel, power-steering, brake-fluid and transmission leaks. Freshly cleaned surfaces may hide a leak, while heavy grime can show where fluid has travelled. Check fluid levels and condition only where access is safe and the seller permits it. Inspect belts for cracking or fraying, hoses for swelling or hardness, clamps for leakage and wiring for brittle insulation, amateur splices or unsupported runs.
Compare the engine’s appearance with the claimed restoration. New paint on the block does not prove a rebuild. Ask for machine-shop invoices, rebuild specifications and the date of the work if a rebuilt engine is part of the value proposition.

A show inspection cannot confirm clutch operation, shift quality or automatic-transmission behavior; list those as follow-up tests.

With the seller’s permission, operate the lights, indicators, horn, wipers, heater, gauges, switches, locks and interior illumination. Inspect the battery hold-down, cable routing, fuses and grounds. Watch for non-factory wiring, household connectors, overheated terminals and accessories that work only intermittently. Note whether the odometer reading is displayed and whether the seller can document it; do not treat a low reading as proof of low total mileage.
Inspect the glass, seals and interior
Check windscreen and other glass for cracks, delamination, scratches and correct markings. Examine rubber seals for shrinkage, hardening and water paths. Lift carpets and trunk mats where allowed, looking for dampness, staining, perforation and repairs in the floor. Inspect seat frames, upholstery, door panels, dashboard, headliner and trim for condition and correct pattern. Missing or incorrect interior parts can be expensive and may affect originality even when the exterior is excellent.
Operate doors, hood, trunk and latches. They should close without lifting, forcing or unusual movement. Misaligned openings can support the body-panel concerns found outside, but they can also result from worn hinges or seals; record the symptom for the specialist to diagnose.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Start and drive the car only under controlled conditions
Insist on a genuine cold start when possible
Ask the seller not to warm the engine before you arrive. Photograph the temperature gauge before starting and listen during cranking, startup and warm-up. Note excessive smoke, rattles, tapping, knocks, belt noise, unstable idle, fuel smell, overheating or warning lights. A warm engine can conceal difficult starting, smoke and oil-pressure problems.
Observe a road test
If the seller permits a drive, confirm insurance and permission first, and let the owner or an agreed specialist drive if required. Evaluate acceleration, gear engagement, clutch take-up, braking in a straight line, steering return, vibration, temperature stability and unusual noises over different surfaces. Do not exceed the conditions the owner authorizes. Record what was not tested, including highway speed, hard braking or full-temperature operation.

A short, supervised drive is evidence—not a substitute for a lift inspection, compression or leak-down testing where appropriate, brake-system examination and a written specialist report.
Compare several cars on risk, not presentation
| Comparison axis | Questions to answer |
|---|---|
| Structure and rust | Is corrosion superficial, repaired properly or structural? Can rails, floors, cowl areas and suspension mounts be inspected on a lift? |
| Identity and originality | Do the VIN, tags, stampings and records agree with the claimed model, body, engine and specification? |
| Mechanical and safety condition | Can the car start, drive, stop and steer safely? What work is documented, and what remains untested? |
| Documentation and provenance | Is there a coherent paper trail linking the car to its ownership and restoration history? |
| Total cost | What will inspection, transport, deferred maintenance, rust repair and correction of originality compromises add to the asking price? |
Use the same checklist and photographs for every candidate. A car with less dramatic paint but accessible records and sound structure may carry less risk than a trophy-winning car whose underside and identity cannot be verified.
Arrange the independent pre-purchase inspection
Choose the right inspector
Use an independent classic-car specialist who is not representing the seller and who understands the marque or construction type. Progressive’s consumer guidance similarly recommends an independent mechanic or certified professional and calls for examination of the undercarriage, suspension, wheels, tires, exhaust and rust or damage. Ask what the inspection includes, whether the car will be lifted, whether photographs are supplied and whether the report distinguishes observed defects from inaccessible areas.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsRequest a written, photo-backed report
The report should identify the car by VIN or chassis number and include:
- Photographs of the identification plates, tags, stampings and odometer.
- Structural and rust findings, including rails, floors, trunk, cowl, torque boxes and suspension mounts.
- Body, paint, filler, overspray and panel-alignment observations.
- Originality or matching-numbers checks with the references used.
- Engine, transmission, cooling, fuel, exhaust, electrical, brake, steering and suspension observations.
- A written list of defects, safety concerns, recommended repairs and items not tested.
Make the offer conditional
Tell the seller that any deposit or purchase is contingent on a satisfactory independent inspection and documentation that matches the vehicle. Agree in writing who pays for transport, lift time and the inspection, and what happens if structural rust, identity discrepancies or major mechanical defects are found. Do not let a show-only price deadline replace verification.
Complete the transaction carefully
Before paying in full, reconcile the inspection report with the title, registration and seller’s identity. The bill of sale should identify the vehicle by VIN or chassis number, state the sale date and odometer reading, and name the parties exactly as they appear on the title. List included parts, spare keys, records and known defects. Keep copies of the title, bill of sale, inspection report, photographs, receipts and written seller statements.
For imported classics, age documentation can affect eligibility under particular rules. NHTSA’s importation guidance gives one example: when no permanent manufacture-date label exists, an invoice or registration showing that the vehicle was registered at least 25 years ago may establish age for that purpose. Confirm the rule that applies to your vehicle and destination rather than assuming a model year alone is sufficient.
