The most dependable way to improve a Royal Enfield Classic 350’s fuel efficiency is to combine smooth riding with correct tyre pressure and routine maintenance. Accelerate progressively, select a suitable gear, anticipate traffic so you are not repeatedly braking and reopening the throttle, and keep the chain, tyres, oil, brakes and clutch within the specifications for your exact motorcycle. These practices can reduce wasted fuel, but no responsible guide can promise a fixed mileage increase: traffic, road gradient, load, weather, tyre condition, riding style and maintenance all change the result.
As a useful reference rather than a guarantee, Autocar India’s page updated on 27 August 2026 reports 32.7 km/l in city testing and 36.8 km/l on the highway for the Classic 350. Your measured figure can legitimately be higher or lower under different conditions.

Use these numbers as context when judging your own motorcycle, not as a pass-or-fail standard. A short urban trip with long idling can consume considerably more fuel per kilometre than a steady ride, while a heavily loaded bike, underinflated tyre or poorly adjusted chain can also change consumption.

Measure your real fuel economy before changing anything
Accurate measurement prevents you from chasing a normal variation or blaming a part that is not responsible. Use the same method for several tanks and record the conditions.
- Fill the tank to the same practical level each time. Do not overfill or rely on the fuel gauge alone.
- Reset the trip meter, or write down the odometer reading.
- Ride normally and record the distance, traffic pattern, passenger or luggage, tyre pressures and any unusual symptoms.
- Refuel to the same level and note the litres added.
- Calculate fuel economy = kilometres ridden ÷ litres added. For example, 280 km divided by 8 litres equals 35 km/l.
- Repeat for at least two or three refills before deciding that a change helped. Compare city trips with city trips and highway trips with highway trips.
Do not compare a single tank used in dense traffic with a highway test and conclude that the motorcycle has developed a fault. A large, persistent change under similar routes and loads is more useful evidence.
Ride in a way that wastes less fuel
Open the throttle progressively
Hard launches demand more fuel and often force an equally hard stop at the next junction. Roll on the throttle smoothly, build speed at a controlled rate and reserve stronger acceleration for situations that genuinely require it. Smoothness does not mean crawling or obstructing traffic; it means avoiding repeated, unnecessary surges.
Shift for the situation, not by a fixed speed number
Use a gear that lets the engine pull cleanly without labouring or revving needlessly. Shift up as speed and traffic permit, and shift down before the engine struggles on a hill or when you need controlled acceleration. There is no single “best” shift speed for every road, because slope, wind, load and traffic change the appropriate gear.
Look ahead and preserve momentum safely
Scan beyond the vehicle immediately in front of you. If a signal is red or traffic is visibly slowing, close the throttle early and let the motorcycle decelerate progressively instead of accelerating toward the queue and then braking hard. Maintain a safe following distance and obey speed limits; fuel saving never justifies unsafe coasting, tailgating or late braking.

Limit unnecessary idling
At a long, predictable stop, switching the engine off can avoid burning fuel while stationary, provided it is safe and practical. Do not switch off in a moving queue, where you need an immediate escape path, or where restarting would create a hazard. Short stops may not justify repeated restart cycles; use judgment rather than an automatic rule.
Keep speed steady on open roads
Frequent high-speed bursts and abrupt corrections generally use more fuel than a legal, steady pace. Choose a speed appropriate to the road, visibility and traffic, then make small throttle adjustments instead of alternating between acceleration and braking.

Tyre pressure affects rolling resistance, handling and tyre temperature, so it is one of the simplest checks to perform. The correct value depends on the exact market, model year, tyre specification and load. Read the pressure information in the owner’s manual or confirm it with an authorized Royal Enfield service centre; do not copy a number from a different edition or country.
For illustration, a Royal Enfield Classic 350 UK owner manual returned in the available documentation lists 32 psi front and 32 psi rear for solo riding, and 32 psi front and 36 psi rear with a pillion. Those figures are specific to that UK manual and load condition, not a universal Classic 350 setting.
Check pressure correctly
- Check when the tyres are cold, ideally before riding or after the motorcycle has been parked long enough to cool.
- Use a reliable, known-good gauge. Compare it occasionally with another gauge if readings seem implausible.
- Set front and rear pressures separately, using the solo or pillion/load specification that applies.
- Inspect the tread and sidewalls for cuts, abrasions, bulges or embedded objects. The Royal Enfield rider guide’s pre-ride wording is: “Tires for correct pressure, abrasions or cuts.”
- Replace or repair a damaged tyre through a qualified professional rather than trying to compensate with pressure.
A pressure gauge does not improve mileage by itself; it lets you verify that the motorcycle is operating at the specified pressure. Never reduce pressure below the manual value to seek more grip or increase it beyond the specification to seek economy.

Keep the chain and controls in specification
Chain tension and lubrication
A chain that is too tight, too loose, dry or contaminated can increase drag and accelerate wear. Check slack using the procedure and measurement in your motorcycle’s manual, with the motorcycle positioned as specified. Lubricate with a suitable motorcycle-chain product at the interval and conditions recommended for your chain, especially after riding in rain or washing the motorcycle. Clean heavy grime with a chain-safe brush and cleaner; avoid forcing debris past seals or spraying lubricant onto the tyre or brake disc.

If the adjusters are at the end of their range, the chain has tight spots, or sprocket teeth look hooked, have an authorized technician inspect the complete drive set.
Inspect brakes and clutch for drag
The rider guide includes brake and clutch function in the pre-ride checks. A brake that does not release fully, a wheel bearing problem or a clutch that slips can waste energy and create heat. Signs include a hot disc after a normal ride, a wheel that is difficult to turn when safely lifted by a qualified mechanic, a burning smell or engine speed rising without matching road speed. These are safety and mechanical issues, not opportunities for an economy adjustment; arrange an inspection.
Follow the maintenance schedule instead of adding unproven products
Use the maintenance plan for your exact Classic 350 and market. Royal Enfield’s guidance calls for checking or servicing items such as engine oil, brakes, clutch operation, tyre condition, chain tension and chain lubrication. Scheduled servicing helps keep the engine and controls within their intended operating condition.
- Use the oil grade, quantity and replacement interval specified for your motorcycle. Do not overfill.
- Ask the service technician to inspect the air-intake and fuel-injection systems when a service is due or symptoms appear.
- Keep fasteners, controls and cables correctly adjusted according to the manual.
- Replace worn or damaged consumables with parts that meet the motorcycle’s specification.
- Keep service records, including date, odometer reading and work performed, so a gradual change is easier to identify.
Normal fuel efficiency does not require an aftermarket exhaust, intake, tuning device or fuel additive. Such changes can affect noise, emissions, reliability, warranty expectations or fueling, and the available manufacturer guidance does not establish a mileage benefit for them. Correct maintenance and diagnosis come first.

Recognize when low mileage indicates a problem
A modest change between tanks is normal. Investigate when the drop is large, persistent and occurs under comparable conditions, especially if it arrives with another symptom.
Warning signs that merit prompt inspection
- The EFI malfunction indicator remains illuminated after the motorcycle has started.
- The engine is difficult to start, stalls, surges, misfires or idles abnormally.
- There is a strong or persistent fuel smell, a visible leak or dampness around fuel-system components.
- Performance has changed sharply, or the engine runs unusually hot.
- Tyres lose pressure repeatedly, the chain develops tight spots, or a brake drags.
Royal Enfield recommends taking the motorcycle to the nearest Royal Enfield Authorised Service Centre “for a detailed inspection and correction of EFI system” when an EFI fault requires attention. Do not attempt unsupported EFI adjustments, bypass the warning light or diagnose a sensor from a generic setting. Record when the light appeared, the fuel economy you measured and any related symptoms; that information helps the technician.

City mileage is usually where riders notice the largest variation because junctions, idling, short trips and traffic density dominate the result. Use this routine on each ride:
- Before leaving, check the cold tyre pressures against your own manual and look for visible tyre, chain or fluid problems.
- Start and ride away normally; avoid prolonged warm-up idling unless the manual or conditions require it.
- Accelerate progressively to the traffic flow, selecting a gear that does not make the engine labour.
- Watch two or three vehicles ahead and release the throttle early when a queue or red signal is developing.
- Keep a safe gap so you can slow smoothly rather than brake hard and reaccelerate.
- At a genuinely long stop, switch off only when doing so will not compromise safety or your ability to move.
- At the end of the ride, note unusual smells, noises, warning lights or handling changes for the next inspection.
This routine reduces avoidable throttle and brake work, but it cannot overcome severe congestion, steep terrain, a heavy load or a mechanical fault.
Highway habits that protect efficiency and the motorcycle
On an open road, maintain a legal, steady speed and avoid needless overtaking cycles. Plan overtakes with adequate visibility and acceleration, then return smoothly to the prevailing flow. Strong headwinds, hills, luggage and a passenger can all reduce the figure even when the motorcycle is operating correctly. Check tyre pressure for the actual load before departure and take breaks rather than riding while fatigued; safe, attentive riding is more important than a marginal fuel saving.

Common mistakes that do not solve low mileage
Copying a pressure number from another bike or country
Different tyre sizes, markets, model years and loads can have different specifications. The UK manual example above should not be transferred automatically to an India-market motorcycle or another edition.
Judging economy from the fuel gauge
The gauge is an approximate level indicator, not a calibrated consumption meter. Use distance and litres added at refueling.
Changing several variables at once
If you alter riding style, tyre pressure, chain service and fuel station at the same time, you cannot tell which change affected the result. Make one sensible change, keep routes comparable and measure over multiple refills.

Using additives or aggressive tuning as a first response
No verified figure establishes a mileage gain from an additive or aftermarket component for the Classic 350 in the available guidance. Diagnose basic condition and EFI warnings first.
Ignoring safety to avoid braking
Anticipation means leaving room and planning early, not rolling through junctions, following too closely or refusing necessary braking. Fuel economy is never a reason to violate traffic law or safe stopping distance.
When to use an authorized service centre
Book an inspection when the EFI indicator stays on, fuel economy remains substantially below your normal result after pressure and maintenance checks, or any leak, misfire, overheating, brake drag or clutch problem appears. Bring your service history and fuel-log entries. Ask the technician to verify the fault codes and inspect the relevant systems rather than requesting a speculative “mileage setting.”
If the motorcycle is within a warranty or service agreement, follow its procedures before fitting non-standard parts. Keep the original parts and invoices for your records.
